Lakers Examiner: Talk about a Lazy Sunday.

The Los Angeles Lakers don’t have a game Sunday for the first time I can remember, so I figured I’d pose a thought-provoking question to keep our minds bleeding Purple and Gold.

So, the Lakers have had plenty of great players over the years. But which five would you choose to be the Los Angeles Lakers’ All-Time starting five?

It seems like an easy question, and some positions (namely point guard) are not really debatable. Others are deceptively difficult.

For the purposes of making this a little more accurate, you have to have each Laker play their NATURAL position. No putting Kobe Bryant at small forward just to make room for Jerry West. No conveniently sliding James Worthy to the power forward. This is about making decisions.

Here is what mine would be, and it certainly wasn’t easy…

chris manning nailed it. those 5 in their prime = unbeatable

  • udechukwu

    PG- Magic Johnson
    SG- Kobe Bryant
    SF- Elgin Baylor
    PF- Kareem Abdu-Jabbar
    C- Shaq

    Horry? Really? Wow!

    PG – Magic
    Guard – Kobe
    PF – Karl
    SF- West

Sorry guys but Gasol shouldn’t be in there. And HORRY WHAAATTT? He’s great but not a superstar.

    Magic (no doubt)
Kobe (fan favorite, never seen west play)
Baylor (One of my favorite scorers, never seen him play live though)
    Kareem (no questioning his presence)
Shaq (Most dominant center in his 5 year prime)

  • lakerschamps09

yea i think i would have to go with the 5 that CHRIS said..
hard to believe that west, worthy and wilt aint on there hmmmm.. but yea those 5 would get u a ship 10 out of 10 times…

  • jason

you cant put shaq or kareem at pf because they’re clearly centers..why i didnt even think of gasol i have no idea but with his unselfish attitude he would be perfect..put him in place of mikan on my list.

  • David

[Comment ID #63830 Will Be Quoted Here]

Wasn’t that the starting lineup of the 95 Lakers?

    My list would be:

    PG= Magic
    SG= Kobe
    SF= Baylor
    PF= Malone
    C= Kareem

Some of you guys cheated by putting Kareem as PF

  • Bryan

    PG- Smuch Parker
    SG – Chucky Atkins
    SF – Valdimir Radmanovic
    PF – Kwame Brown
    C – Chris Mihm

  • Lakers4Life

    PG – Magic Johnson
    SG – Kobe Bryant
    SF – Elgin Baylor
    PF – Pau Gasol
    C – Shaquille O’Neal

  • Kristian

Kareem would have torn Shaq apart.

    A.C. Green

ALL TIME lakers team. A.C. Green wore the purple and gold for 15 years, Pau and Malone for a year each.

  • kobe-wan kenobi

    2 different situations

1- if you count only the stretch that players played with lakers

worthy (i never saw baylor – so i cant judge)
shaq (since he was much more dominat during his lakers years than kareem or wilt during their lakers years)

2- if you count the best players but does not matter if they had their most dominant years in other teams

worthy (i never saw baylor – so i cant judge)
rodman (defensively) malone offensively – i would get rodman though…

kareem PF is a non sense…he like wilt and shaq was a pure center

  • newtdog

If time with the lakers doesn’t matter, then Malone has to be on this list. Second leading scorer all time.

    PG- Magic
    SG- Jerry West
    SF- Kobe
    PF- Karl Malone
    C- Kareem

  • gus26

    Sedale Threatt
    Anthony Peeler
    Anthony “Pig” Miller
    Sam Perkins
    Sam Bowie

  • kobe-wan kenobi

kareem could not even move shaq
    be serious!

  • Fred A.

    SG: KOBE
    C: WILT

  • Sean All Ivy

Kareem wouldn’t have to move Shaq cause he would out play/ technique him all day long

  • the ape

i agree. i’d put kareem at center any day. i was actually surprised somebody would put shaq in over kareem or wilt.

    my team would be

    PG: Magic
    SG: Kobe
    SF: Worthy
    PF: Gasol
    C: Kareem

all things being equal, baylor is probably the better SF, but putting in a magic/kobe sort of system, worthy i think is the better fit

  • Kobe-wan kenobi

    yeah right
and he could really defend him…?!?!?!
    i wanna see that

i take the dominant shaq anyday than the kareem that was magic’s side kick

  • trdsol23

    pg – magic
    sg – kobe
    sf – baylor
    pf – malone
    c – shaq

    pg – smush parker
    sg – mike penberthy
    sf – adam morrison
    pf – slava medvedenko
    c – travis knight

    take your pick

  • the ape

but shaq in his prime versus kareem in his prime. i’d still go with kareem. and with a big passer like pau – that would be something to see

  • Nabil

Nice line-ups. I guess you can’t go wrong with Magic, Worthy, and Kareem together. I mean, they did drive for five. Which puts Worthy in ahead of Baylor, which just seems crazy. But again, let’s go with chemistry a bit here.

Add Kobe to that, and hot damn! By default, if there’s Kobe, I’d remove Shaq from the list, even though Shaq 2000 was something to behold. After all, this isn’t to get 1-3 chips, this is go for like 10+ straight, and that ain’t happening with Kobe+Shaq.

So Magic, Kobe, Worthy, and Kareem are all great, which just leaves the power forward question. I debate the notion some people have of putting in players who didn’t have their greatest years with the Lakers, such as Malone and Rodman…especially since those guys were “one and done.”

I guess the question is- who could run with this ultimate showtime team?

I say…GASOL!!! (He’s going to be a Laker for awhile).

    So its:

    PG- Magic
    SG- Kobe
    SF- Worthy
    PF- Gasol
    C- Kareem

    Bench would include:
Nick the Quick, Eddie Jones, Logo, Baylor, Big Shot Bob, Stilt, and Snack.

  • lakerfan81

    “pg-smush parker
    sg-sun yu
    sf-adam morrison
    pf-mark madsen
    c-kwame brown”

Lainok don’t forget Slava Medvedenko. He should be on their in place of Madsen.

  • jay

    PG – Tierre Brown
    SG – Cedric Ceballos
    SF – Kareem Rush
    PF – Shawn Rooks
    C – Samaki Walker

    6th Man – DJ Mbenga
