What should the Lakers do? When should they do it? Should they even do anything? Sound-off in the comments and tell us what you think!

Something must happen. As Kobe Bryant has said, “Do something, and do it Now!”

However, now it’s a different sense of desperation. The facts are clear, what has to be done is obvious… Kobe needs to get traded, or needs to be a Laker for the rest of the season.

How should management go about this? I would have to agree with Magic Johnson that a decision has to be made within the next week, or as soon as possible. The Lakers need to make a decision, are we either going to keep Kobe, or decide to trade him as soon as possible.

Trying to get a precise comment out of the Buss family is nearly impossible, but somebody needs to step up and make a statement about the immediate future of this franchise.

Phil Jackson wants answers, the players want this resolved and the Lakers want to move ahead with the season without this dark cloud hanging over them.

There is no way this Laker team can be successful with this hanging over them the entire season. These trade talks aren’t like constant Shawn Marion talks, or how it used to be with Garnett in Minnesota. These trade talks are backed by sources, strong comments, and rumors coming out daily. This cannot go on. Kobe doesn’t want it to be a distraction. Of course he doesn’t, and either does Phil, Lamar, Magic or any other person that considers themselves a Laker.

But the bottom line is, this is a very strong distraction. The majority of the Opening Night TNT broadcast was all about the Kobe rumors. Pre-game, during the game, half-time, and post game.

It is no longer what this Laker team can do with Kobe firing on all cylinders. Now the question is basically the basic 5 W’s. Who? What? When? Where? and Why?

These change daily and it is a definite cause for concern. Management needs to publicly say what they are going to do and do it. There needs to be no grey area. Everything is up in the air and this Laker team needs to have stability and something they can know is true.

Almost every Laker has been rumored in trade rumors. Now, the man that is supposed to lead them to the promise land might not be there next month, next week, he might even get shipped out tomorrow.

Uncertainty is the one thing this young laker team cannot have. No superstar has had these strong of trade rumors and distraction during the course of a season in a long time. The fact of the matter is, the Lakers can’t focus on the season ahead until this current drama is resolved.

Buss has to make a decision. Kobe shut up no matter how much you want out we are not dealing with this, and you’re going to have to wait for the offseason. Or, Kobe you will be traded as soon as possible and are no longer in our plans for the future.

Either way as a fan you have to have an opinion. But at this point in the season stability is the main thing the Los Angeles Lakers need. After watching the first game of the season it is very evident that very few things are constant in La-La Land.

  • gstoneballer

you hit it right on the head… but thats the smart thing to do.. and being that the lakers fo dont do the smart things now days…… i doubt they say anything in the coming days

  • fatty

McGrady said as much in the post game courtside interview. This big of a trade happens in the offseason. Its too much distraction otherwise.

So I concur, “Say something and say it now”

Buss and Kobe MUST say nothing will happen until the offseason, then we re-evalueate it, and then drop it. No more phone calls accepted period about Kobe trades.

Or make the trade. Take .50 cents on the dollar and ruin the franchise.

  • gstoneballer

but again.. that requires are front office to be smart.. and they dont seem they are.. especially now it seems that the front office is agreeing that it is time for kobe to go

  • drake hunter

for every cause there is an effect…kobe asked to be traded and wouldn’t back down from his request even when the f/o said they wouldn’t trade him…now the lakers are trying to grant his wish whether they want to or not because he put them in this predicament…kobe needs to man up with his demands and tell the f/o to either trade me now or tell them he wants to be a laker so the current laker team won’t be in limbo and try to make something out of this season while it’s still early

  • gstoneballer

this matter was closed until jerry buss brought it up… if he never did.. the kobe trade talks were done months ago……. buss opened his mouth.. and boom.. the rumors fly every day.

  • steve

Both parties are at fault…magic spoke…buss spoke..phill spoke…KOBE COMPLAINED OUT LOUD AND PEOPLE STILL DEFEND THIS CHILD …..FOR MAGIC TO SAY WHAT HE DID KOBE CANT BE THIS ANGLE PEOPLE MAKE HIM OUT TO BE ….GIVE ME A BREAK….GET RID OF HIM…AND DO IT NOW……PLEASE

  • drake hunter

the Kobe trade talks were never done because Kobe never put closure to what he started…he said he wanted to be traded first not the other way around and then he left everything up in the air even until now and never addressed the matter…regardless he annoys me now no matter how good he is because he’s being a cancer to the team

  • yomi

Does anyone here speak English!?? Kobe said he wants to win- NOW! Not after Andrew becomes and all-star. NOW! So why should he withdraw his trade demands if nothing has changed?? You guyz are only thinking about yourselfs and not Kobe’s career. Can you imagine if kobe stays with the lakers and he retires without winning anything anymore? Would you rather listen to the haters talk about what a fraud and a fluke he was because he never won without shaq? Well as a Kobe fan, I don’t want that. So, if it means he’s only opportunity is for him to play in toronto, I don’t care as long as he wins another ring! The laker owner is tired of winning. So the lakers owner and management can go to hell for all i care. GO KOBE!

  • drake hunter

**WOW**I thought Sasha was the only @$$ kisser Kobe had!!!

  • KLMonster

i thought kobe already said he wants to be a Laker for the rest of his career in one of his interviews before training camp?

i’m not sure, there so much news going around on this and I can no longer keep up with it…

but i agree with you drake, in order for this team to move on, kobe needs to clarify his stance once and for al…

  • Michael

The Lakers front office obviously does not know what its doing. It was evident again tonight that Kobe is the number one player in the league. And to trade him is just ludacris from a fan’s and business standpoint. To watch Cook and Brown play just sickens me. Instead of trading Kobe, give him what he wants. Give him the players that will help him win. After seeing tonight’s game it was really crystal clear to me why he is frustrated. His teammates were pathetic. He scored half the teams points with a sprained wrist.
It really saddens me that the crowd was booing him. They are only encouraging him to leave. All he really wants is to win and isn’t that what we all want? Its the Buss’s that you need to be booing. It shouldn’t be “In Buss we trust.” They are the ones that are screwing the Lakers.

  • drake hunter

I concur monster….the only person that can put all this drama to rest is Kobe himself…not phil, jim, jerry, mitch, or david blaine can make this go away…i’m tired of hearing about it and as a laker fan i’m tired of reading about it even though i can’t help myself!

  • JoJoEnglish94Bulls4ever

Hey I am from Chicago and all I can say is the Lakers looked bad tonight. Ben Gordon is close to being an ALL-Star seeing as he and Nocioni are the only consistant players scoring wise. I think your best offer is Chicago. If you get Tyrus and Gordon plus Noah thats a team you can Build on. Tyrus is a freak you guys have no idea. Personally I don’t wana see them trade BG or Tyrus. I find it odd that you still think the Lakers can Keep Kobe? It’s been a slow process for LA fans.First they won’t win with him and they won’t get shit with what they have. They will be drafting in the middle every season. It’s becoming a joke. Give up he wants out.

Well said. We all want the Lakers to be on top, Kobe and the whole lakers nation. Kobe wants to be a Laker for life, hes said it many times, even during his rants, what he, I, and every die-hard Lakers fan wants is for this team to be on top where it belongs. But we’re not and thats where all the frustration is coming from.

  • JoJoEnglish94Bulls4ever

You don’t really have any assests either for a trade. You guys are fucked.

  • laker4life23

Trade Bynum Crittenton Brown + any filler necessary excluding Kobe and Odom and acquire Jermaine O’Neal and all our problems are solved

  • n8

    Hey JoJoEnglish94Bulls4ever,

Nobody here wants your crappy 2-4 players.

WELL IF YOUR THINKIN LAMAR, UMMM NO! THANKS LAKER FANS FOR SHOWING YOUR LOVE LAST NIGHT TO KOBE, THE GUY THAT IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD! GOOD WAY TO SHOW HIM THAT WE WANT HIM HERE! GOOD JOB!

  • Tim-4-Show

Staples Center won’t do it, they’re probably under strict orders… but don’t you think if they showed Jim Buss on the Jumbo-Tron, he’d get booed like crazy?!

Come on, we all knew Kobe would get booed. He deserved the boos as it’s strictly because of how he handled this. HOWEVER, the fan still loves Kobe, which is why they weren’t booing him all night. They were chanting his name while he was at the line. Although, Kobe did get out of hand last night in parts, his constant drives into a collasped lane to draw a foul (that was not called for the most part), I did hear some slight boos for a moment, but I don’t know if it was for Kobe or the refs.

Put Jim or even Jerry on the big screen and watch the crowd go nuts with their boos. I guarantee it. We’re not all happy with Kobe, but we’re REALLY not happy about management. I like Bynum, I like Farmar, I like Ronny… but seriously, management doesn’t do it’s job, which is to MANAGE.

  • mplakers

YES WE WANT HIM HERE BUT, DOES HE WANT TO BE HERE??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? THAT’S WHY A TRADE HAS A GOOD CHANCE OF HAPPENING AND I HOPE IT IS ARENAS OR SOMEONE OF THAT CALIBER AND NOT THOSE BULLS(HIT) PLAYERS

  • gugy

    I agree KOBESno1FAN.

lakers fans should and must booing Mitch, Jim and Jerry Buss.

Kobe is the reason Lakers has even being on the spotlight. Without Kobe superstar charisma, Lakers will become the Clippers. A team nobody even notice.

Bring major star quality to play with Kobe NOW!

Very interesting read on Kobe and passing from Truehoops

    http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-28-246/Thinking-Like-Kobe-Bryant-in-Crunch-Time.html

“o try to get an idea of how Kobe’s seeing his teammates, let’s examine how these passes turned out.

    * Five passes to Luke Walton. Four times it comes back to Bryant, one time Walton gets fouled.
    * Two passes to Jordan Farmar, leading to two missed jumpers by other players.
    * Twice to Ronny Turiaf. One time it comes back, the other time it’s a missed jumper.
    * Once to Maurice Evans, who passes it right back.
    * Once time to Andrew Bynum, who passes it back.
    * Once to Derek Fisher for the game-tying basket.

After considering how productive Bryant was on his own, and how little came out of his passes, one could make the argument that in his head, most of his teammates were not worth passing to with the game on the line.”

ummm ok its bs that fans were booing kobe but they kinda have a point but then they were chanting kobe later in the 4rth quarter sooooo wat the f**k… ohhh yea joj94bullsfan im from chicago too and a laker and a bulls fan soooo if bulls gets kobe that be great but bulls r giving everbody except for deng, hinrich, and wallace so if it gets bad just choose like 4 players and a draft pick and live with it tyrum is a freak gordon can light it up,noah is up and coming soooo if lakers have gordon, odom, tyrum and bynum that sick…..

you know why the lakers look flat on offense when kobe is not in the game? it’s because they set up the post, bynum actually gets good position(yao on the bench), evans gets the ball and refuses to pass it inside to bynum who has shown he has really improved his moves to the basket. check it out on youtube, count how many times bynum gets good position and they are afraid to pass it to him. it must be a trust issue but, so far he has looked impressive in short bursts. the short bursts are because guys on the team don’t give him the ball when they should and they opt instead to shoot jumpers.

honestly, he impressed me more than kwame. bynum was on yao during the fourth and yao was a nonfactor. then pj subbed kwame back in…jeez i don’t know why?, when the kid was holding his own, and right away yao hit two hookshots over kwame’s small hands. I THOUGHT IF IT AIN’T BROKE WHY FIX IT???? why did he sub him out? it’s time to start trusting the kid if he is the franchise’s future.

GIVE HIM THE DAMN BALL AND RUN THE TRIANGLE THROUGH HIM WHEN KOBE IS ON THE BENCH!!!!!

  • http://theworldvoice.com LUUUUKE

this is a terrible situation. it has never been as dire as it is right now. I agree something has to happen now. The tension is palpable. Kobe really seems like he doesn’t want to be here. Honestly in my opinion Kobe is the reason we lost last night. He took far too many shots and didn’t run the offense. Countless times he dribbled into 4 people and threw up a bad shot while Luke, Fish, etc were just standing at the three point line. As a huge Kobe fan and an eternal Laker fan, I must say Kobe did deserve those boos. However, if this organization trades him it will be the worst mistake in franchise history. He is the best player on the planet. Without Kobe in Los Angeles the Lakers lose all of the prestige and star appeal. They will cease being Hollywood’s golden child. Sports in Los Angeles will lose prominence faster than Kwame Brown missing a lay up. If KObe stays and the Lakers roster remains the same, they’ll be 7th seed at best. THERE IS A SOLUTION. THIS SITUATION CAN BE SALVAGED WITH KOBE ON THE LAKERS. The Lakers need to trade pretty much EVERYONE on the roster except for Kobe, Fisher, and Walton. MAKE DEALS!!! SIGN CHRIS WEBBER or someone like that. TRADE ODOM FOR SOMEONE MORE CONSISTENT. THE FO NEEDS TO STOP TRYING TO DEAL KOBE AND START TRYING TO SEE WHAT OTHER DEALS CAN BE MADE. We can’t wait for Bynum to develop b/c by the time he does if ever Kobe’s Jersey will be hanging next to MJ’s in Chicago. GET KOBE SOME HELP NOW!!!!! THATS THE ONLY WAY TO SALVAGE THE TEAM!!!!!!!

  • Yoni

Response to Fatty: I think it’s better to trade Kobe now and get .50 cents on the dollar, than to wait for him to opt out and get nothing.

Mplakers, couldn’t have said it better, up until last year I was a huge Kobe fun, but lately I am opening my eyes and realizing he is overated.
I agree that he is the most talented player in the NBA, but he is not a team player and most importantly a Leader.

He had the worst body language I have ever seen an athlete have in the begining of the season last night. The rest of the players, except for Fish, are affraid of Kobe limiting their potential. True that the Laker players have not been so good, but can you blame them? Look at Lamar before he came to the Lakers, he was always injury proned but when the in games he played with the Clippers and the Heat, he was awesome. Kobe has enough role players to get out of the first round. Kobe Sucks! (this coming from one of the biggest Kobe fans ever!, but not no more)

Let him go, get a few young players, give it a year or two for Crittenton to develop, and Bynum continuing to get better and better, and everything will be good.

-till the day i die, GO LAKERS!!!

  • xxv112002

    I agree Yoni,

We should trade Kobe Bryant ASAP. Him and Smush are the Cancer to the team. I really don’t know why others want to ignore the fact that if we wait until next year to see if he changes his mind or to trade him. Think about it. Next year will be too late to get anything in return. Look at what happened to Minnesota. They waited too long. What do they have? Garbage. Now they are so desperate they trade for Antoine Walker. If we wait till next year, GM’s will take advantage and will give us garbage because they know it is inevitable. Kobe WILL LEAVE. Nobody’s gonna trade for him. They know that Kobe wants to go to Chicago. Kobe doesn’t want to go to a mediocre team. Especially if Chicago gives up its championship caliber players for him. So what do you think he’ll do? Sit out the remainder of the season. What can we do? NOTHING. Unless you want to beg him to waive his No Trade Clause which he is currently using to perfection.

Im a Laker fan since birth. Im also sad that Kobe decides to do the unthinkable and leave the city that loves him to pursue his dream to play in Michael Jordan’s old stomping grounds. But I do realize that at this point, its too late. Start to think about the future of the franchise. When is the right time to trade him. And for whom. This is the year to do it. While we can still get quality pieces in return.

I also do not like the idea of trading Bynum and Odom for Jermaine O’neal. JO is injured since last year with a bad knee. Bynum has improved his offense. Defense is missing. And will improve in a couple of years he has a very good chance of becoming an all star. He might play soft now. Its because he is still 20 years old. Kids play different than men do. Kids play with finesse. Men play power games. Wait a couple of years. Give him a chance to develop into a man. Then you’ll see the difference. Mitch, Magic, and the Buss family see it. That’s why he’s the future.

Odom is a leader. Like Nash, Kidd, Pippen, Magic, LeBron have in common. He makes his teammates play better. How he does it? He gives them freedom to play. The freedom to make mistakes and he shows them that he will ride or die with the team. What I love about Odom is he is humble on the court. He shows he is enjoying his teammates. That is why teammates enjoy playing with him. He gives you passes and even if you dont make the easiest shot. Rest assured, he’ll pass it to you again. Patience is what he has that Kobe does not. Kobe might play for a couple of minutes and let the others play. But when things arent going so well, he takes over. Dominates so much of the ball leaving his teammates to just watch. You say Odom is inconsistent? I say Odom is a leader.

What also is funny is, the remark by someone saying Kobe wants to win while the Buss family just want to sell tickets. You think they dont want to win? Getting further to the playoffs is selling more tickets. Winning championships is selling more merchandise and tickets. Now you still thinking the Buss family does not want to win? He just wants one thing from Kobe and the fans. And its to be patient.

It took Jerry West a decade to build a championship team. Give Kupchack the some time to rebuild. It’s much sweeter to watch our Lakers grow and become champions.

  • BEC

    Yoni,
Do you know much about basketball or even the lakers?
Enough talent to pass the first round?? We have enough talent to beat the Suns?? Is that what youre saying?
Our starting pg is Smush our back-up was rookie jordan farmar. He started in the postseason, thats how bad we are. Our centers were a 19year old Bynum and Kwame brown. At pf our backups our brian cook and ronny(rookie). Vlad was injured and sasha is sasha. I dont see any talent or even much skill or basketball iq aside from Kobe and Lamar. Walton is good but not starter quality. So where exactly is this talent you see, that I dont?

As for Lamar, if im not mistaken, hes playing much better ball here with the Lakers, hes rebounding is more here and his shooting percentage is 43% with the Clips and Heat and 48 here with the Lakers. Stats dont lie.

  • ryan

jerry buss n mitch need to find a way to keep lamar and still get jermaine oniel even if that means giving up bynum

  • Michael

These are sad times, my fellow laker fans. I never knew how much of a laker fan I was, till now. I can’t concentrate on anything else but whats goin on with the lakers and all these trade rumors. Days are gloomy in Lakerland. Its hard to grasp but its even more evident now than in the summer, that we are about to lose the greatest player to follow the Jordan Era.

All these issues are the fault of one man and that man’s name is Kobe Bryant. Kobe had Phil Jackson and Shaq, only to run them out of town. After having a crappy first year being at the helm of the Lakers (34-48), Kobe, the man who Coach Jackson said was “uncoachable” had no choice but to take back Phil Jackson.

No matter how anyone looks at it, Kobe created his own mess. He knows his Lakers suck (and suck bad), and now he wants to abandon them and the city that stuck by him throughout the years (i.e. his issues in Colorado). No matter how often Phil Jackson, Jerry West or even Magic talked to him about making peace with Shaq, about the need to suit up at least two superstars in order to win a title, Bryant wouldn’t listen. Even Phil Jackson wrote in his book that Kobe said, “I’m tired of being a sidekick,”. Kobe wanted to win a title without Shaq and now that he can’t do it, he wants to abandon L.A.

The Lakers decided to keep Kobe and dump Shaq, because they wanted to keep the “kid” happy, and in dumping Shaq, the Lakers got a TERRIBLE DEAL – we didn’t even get the Miami Heat’s best player at the time. I know people think that Kobe had nothing to do with Shaq’s trade, but wake up and smell the coffee people, Kobe was the main reason Shaq was traded. Kobe even recently said he wished now that the issue between him and Shaq was kept private. At least Jordan had the intelligence to realize that he needed another superstar (i.e. Pippen) and they went on to win 6 championships together.

The Buss’ trusted Kobe and basically handed him the franchise but Kobe has proven to be unreliable. Sure he’s a great basketball player but he can’t lead a team to save his life. To quote a recent article, Kobe “is the man who once said he trusted his teammates, but trusted himself more. This is the guy who wouldn’t shoot the ball in a sudden-death playoff game against the Suns. This is the employee who did a series of interviews demanding a trade, and who mocked his GM and a teammate, Andrew Bynum, for a couple of strangers packing a cell-phone camera.”, not to mention in the same interview he said “Get a Bulls uniform, fellas,”.

No matter how you look at it Laker fans, Kobe created his own mess and wants the city of Los Angeles to sit in it, while he goes to Chicago.

    LAKERSFIRST!!!

Obviously, you’re only a Kobe fan and NOT A LAKER FAN. If that is true, then allow me to point you to KB24.com and you can sing his praises there. This is a site for TRUE LAKER FANS ONLY (not Kobe only fans).

“Even if Kobe gets traded, I WILL STILL BE A LAKER FAN” – These are the type of fans that should be at this site.

We understand Kobe wants to win NOW, so do us Laker fans, however, the way Kobe has gone around and publicly bashed his teammates, his GM and the owner of the Lakers is a disgrace and only makes it harder for the FO to get any real deals done. You can thank Kobe for us not having KG here for his public rant about how our FO is in disarray and you can thank Kobe for stating his infamous “do something and do it now” cry and making the Lakers look desperate in front of the entire league (why do you think Indiana asked for BOTH Bynum and Odom for Jermaine O’Neal – because he made the Lakers looked desperate). You can also thank Kobe for taking ALL negotiating power away from the Lakers when he publicly asked to be traded. The keyword here if you are so ignorant to take note is “PUBLICLY”. You do not bash your teammates the way he did, bash the GM the way he did nor do you bash the owner of the team (his employer), in public, the way he did and expect to get any positive accomplished. Why would NBA players want to come here when you have an egotistical a** like Kobe who will publicly throw you under the bus.

You think us Laker fans are only thinking of ourselves, but we are thinking about winning a championship as a team. Kobe is the one who thinks of himself (“I’m tired of being a sidekick” from Phil Jackson’s book).

I believe you are very wrong when you say Dr. Buss does not want to win anymore. Under Jerry Buss the Lakers have won 8, count them, 8 championships. When you win that many titles you want to continue to keep winning, but looking back at it, Kobe has been a real pain and has contributed to the Lakers being unable to acquire top talent. He didn’t want Shaq so the Lakers got rid of Shaq, in a terrible deal. He doesn’t want to share the spotlight with another superstar and now look where he is, ready to abandon L.A. Kobe helped create this mess and now he wants us to sit in it.

You’re a Kobe fan, that’s fine, but REMEMBER, this is a Laker site for true Laker fans, you know real fans who support their team through thick and thin. As a Kobe only fan, leave this site now and do not return for you are not wanted here by true Laker fans. Go to the Kobe site and praise him there. When Kobe gets traded, drop your bandwagon Laker jersey on the floor (never wear your Laker jersey again) and don’t the let the door hit you on the way out – bandwagon fan. LAKERSFIRST!!!

  • yomi

Lakersfirst, Points well made. But why do you guyz keep living in the past? The lakers USED to win championships. Dr. Buss WON 50,000 titles. Both verbs are past tense! The truth is the franchise have taken a break from winning and they are kind of shocked by Kobe’s reaction. It’s like they’ve being on vacation and suddenly they realize their house is on fire. I am a laker fan, but I am more of a Kobe fan. And the reason is simple, HE IS ONE OF THE REALEST PEOPLE ON TV, perharps more than the POPE! The reason I say that is because of all his imperfections. Every other personality out there that you guyz consider classy/perfect, are simply ACTORS. They have perfected the skills of manipulating you. I’d rather be around Kobe than some Tim Duncan who has a “perfect” image. The reason why there are so much hate in the media and now in Lakerdom towards Kobe is simply because he lets you know what’s on his mind. And when you compare him to anybody else in the league, you go “damn kobe is just plain evil”.

And as far as him wanting to leave the Lakers, I’d hate to see it happen, but I’d also hate to see his prime wasted! So ask yourself this question:

Would you rather see Kobe finish his career as a laker and not win another championship or Would you rather see him play on pluto with an opportunity to win one or two?

Well, I’d rather see him play on Pluto.

Saying that Kobe would win a championship with this line-up is like saying Ben Wallace in going to shoot 95% from the free throw line the rest of his career. IT IS DEFINITELY GOING TO HAPPEN….NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yomi

You guyz also need to remember that Kobe himself is a Laker fan! He has being a Laker fan even when he was in italia. So when does being a Kobe fan becomes being against the Lakers? You guyz are just pathetic. You guyz sound like a girl trying to keep her boyfriend from breaking up with her after he found out that she’d lied to him. Well, if you want him to stay sooo bad, give him a blow-job or something. Make a move that would blow his mind. If you can’t do that, then shut the hell up and watch him walk away.

I like to think I am a Laker fan and I know that I know about basketball. Obviously When Kobe Doesn’t lead his team, and takes 25 shots during the regular season, they are not going to have a great record. Not having a great record = getting a bad seed in the playoffs = getting a bad seat in the playoffs = playing a good team = playing a good team = possibility of losing. If we play Phoenix we are going to lose but if Kobe was a team player and we finished with a better record than we would not have played Phoenix, Lakers have enough talent to get out of the first round. Look at the situation from the outside, not as a stubborn fan.
