The Oklahoma City Thunder have agreed to trade Russell Westbrook to the Houston Rockets for Chris Paul, first-round picks in 2024 and 2026, pick swaps in 2021 and 2025, league sources tell ESPN.

Thunder are playing a long-game unseen in recent NBA history: Seven additional first-round picks lined up through 2026 -- plus four pick swaps -- via deals for Paul George and Chris Paul.

Oklahoma City GM Sam Presti worked with Westbrook and his agent, Thad Foucher, to deliver the former MVP to his preferred destination: A reunion with James Harden, per sources.

Houston is dumb for this. Westbrook and Harden in the same backcourt is ridiculously stupid. There is only so many possessions and if Westbrook doesn’t have the ball he isn’t effective. He can’t shoot.

This does so little for houston. Westbrook and Harden are not a good match. Both need the ball a lot.

This trade is a sad act of desperation.  I have no idea why it was done (aside from the issues between Paul and Harden now obviously being a real thing despite what the Rockets tried to float out there), but I do know that it gets Houston no closer to a ring.  Two guys that can't play without the ball in a an offensive system that scores points, but has proven time and time again they can't defend.  No defense, no rings.  I'll hoist a trophy as an NBA coach before D'Anotoni ever will.  Houston will have a decent regular season (maybe, I seriously don't see how this works), and fizzle out in the post-season per usual.

And if I'm a Thunder season ticket holder, I cancel immediately.  What a terrible job of team management.  The Thunder have replaced the Clippers now as the most futile team in the NBA (save for the Knicks).

Funny how OKC has now lost Durant, Westbrook, and Harden. Three of the best players of this generation.

Ok maybe I’m trippin but I need to know the deal on the picks. What good are they if Houston is in the semi finals every year? Why not to a bum team for their picks?

Because Westbrook would make the situation untenable if he were traded to a bum team. This way he gets to go to one of his preferred destinations, Houston was at the top of his list along with Miami, and the Thunder get back picks that they hope will be far enough down the line that they'll be solid and maybe not in the 20s range. Maybe Westbrook breaks down and the Rockets have trouble building a contender with his bloated salary on the books.

its because OKC is not a long term option for a player. very small market value, no loyalty.. etc..

if you want to have a better future there's no other place to be but in LA.

If the Thunder were the Knicks or some other big market team I think trading Westbrook would be indefensible. But having lost or traded Harden, Durant, and George I don't really see the point in OKC holding onto a 30 year old Westbrook with his bloated salary. Also doing right by Westbrook who was loyal to the franchise. Sam Presti has proven he can successfully build through the draft. If Clay Bennett thought he could make more money by keeping Westbrook don't you think he would?
