Luke Walton takes heat from Magic Johnson for Lakers' start

Adrian Wojnarowski and Dave McMenamin

In a meeting on Tuesday following a winless two-game trip, Los Angeles Lakers president Magic Johnson admonished coach Luke Walton for the team's sluggish start to the season, league sources told ESPN.

Johnson's cutting appraisal elevated an already acute awareness within the Lakers coaching staff that there are intense and immediate pressures on Walton to deliver the franchise a winner in short order.

Despite Johnson's prior proclamations of needing to allow time for Walton to develop a young roster surrounding four-time MVP LeBron James, evidence is mounting that Walton's job security ultimately depends upon his ability to significantly improve upon a 3-5 to start the season.

That rant about the refs probably didn't help. I mean I'm not disagreeing that refs have been hurting us but generally you don;t see NBA coaches blaming all their issues after an ugly loss on refs. But winning fixes everything and if luke can get us above .500 in a short time then im sure the heat will drop.

Walton is about to get fired after this weekend. They will drop 2 games Sat/Sun. Watch Lebron put little effort. Ad much as I am happy he is with the team, he might be the cancer in the room. Lebron is too old to be running up and down the court every game. Lebron is all about ISO And dishing out to 3 pt shooters. Watch Lue become the coach.

Wow, this is worse the the D’Angelo Russell situation. It’s so poorly handled.

I like to dip my feet in toilet water & smell them.

Remember that Walton wasnt a Pelinka/Magic hire. He’s one of the last Jim Buss transactions still remaining.

Get ready for more Lebron dribbling, bull rush and kick out.

Glad this is coming out now. If this doesn’t light a fire under Luke and the Kids its time to make a move. If he’s fired they better have someone better ready to take over.

Lebron can be the GOAT but man talk about some shady dealings. Same shiet he did in Cleveland he is doing to the Lakers. He’s the only reason this franchise has garbage arse KCP. Magic needs to wake up.

Personally i'm not a huge fan of luke. His player development is great a you can see with a lot of the young core but his decision on assistant coaches has always irked me. Also rotations have always been an issue with him. I really could take or leave him at this point but if we do move on I really worry who Magic would want. For all we know we end up with Byron, Rambis, or Lue. I mean if they end up with someone like Messina then pull the trigger now but for some reason the NBA always picks awful coaches with experience over great assistants who haven't gotten a chance yet and I think Magic will follow that logic here as well.

Don’t think he’s on the hot-seat yet, but good. Luke can’t do anything about LeBron missing free throws or our lack of defense, but he can stop with the funky lineups and the whacky assistants he put in charge of the D and O.

Schedule will get softer after the weekend, team is healthy, and starting 5 may finally be figured out. I expect some better ball to be played.

Also be prepared for this talk to heat up. Lakers have 2 really tough games ahead of them with Blazers and Raptors on a back to back. Lakers could easily be 3-7.

Have you not been watching Laker games?

A majority of the offense has been the complete opposite of that.
If anything, this is the least amount of ball handling I've ever witnessed Lebron do in several years...

How the [expletive] is anything Luke's fault? He has to tinker with lineups simply because the team has no chemistry, and it's composed with guys who are not compatible with each other. If he wasn't tinkering with lineups, then people will be complaining about the opposite, how Luke refuses to try new lineups, etc etc.

LeBron's success with the Heat and Cleveland was due to two factors. He either had an elite playmaker playing by his side, OR he was surrounded by lethal 3 point shooters that made collapsing defenses pay when he put his head down and drove in. Lakers have neither. So that has nothing to do with Luke.

I agree that if we lose back to back this weekend and drop to 3-7 Luke will be fired. Not sure what I'd do tbh but I think that's what Magic will do.

That's a shame and future free agents will continue to see the Lakers as a team that's rebuilding, with no plan, and no stability. The FO need's to look at themselves, they're the ones that gave Luke this group of players.
