What would be breaking news is if Magic kept his mouth shut for once.

I missed it...what did he say?

Nothing that should be fined. This interview btw was on the front of NBA.com

"With his ball-handling skills and his passing ability. He plays above the rim I never could do that. But in his understanding of the game, his basketball IQ, his creativity of shots for his teammates. That's where we [have the] same thing. Can bring it down, make a pass, make a play. I'm just happy he's starting in the All-Star game because he deserves that. And he's going to be like an MVP, a champion, this dude he's going to put Milwaukee on the map. And I think he's going to bring them a championship one day."

This is the NBA telling Magic to stay quiet. I think they got a lot of teams calling them to complain about his behavior when he got the job and told him he cannot say anything about other players or else its a fine. This is a very petty thing for the NBA to do though. Nothing Magic said was tampering. He even said he will win it for the bucks which insinuates he isn't trying to get him.

This is silly.

Phil Jackson used to get away with stuff like this all of the time.  Popovich still does.

Magic has a big mouth but this wasn't worthy of a fine.

Some insight on the Magic fine. This is a very strict interpretation of the rule that front office officials can’t talk about players under contract with other teams. IMO, too strict. But it seems context matters after the Lakers previous fine re: PG.

It's tampering to talk about another team's player. Doesn't have to be recruiting. It's happened to Phil and Kerr before.

Phil also got away with it often.  The only time he got fined is when he referenced a player and our team, not the players own team.  This is beyond petty by the NBA.

Look, the rule itself may be a bit outdated or what Magic said really wasn't so bad, but the rule is the rule.

Magic is President of Basketball Ops. He needs to shut his mouth up about other teams' players.

Yea I don't like him being singled out but at the same time I get it.

This is the NBA firing a warning shot leading up to 2018 free agency.  If you say something stupid we'll have no choice but to come down hard because we're getting a lot of pressure from other teams.  Same with the Chris Paul veto.  I'm sure in a bubble Stern would have loved CP3 on the Lakers but when the owners are threatening an insurrection your hands are tied.

This is Adam Silver telling Magic Johnson to be quiet for the next 5 months.

Let's look on the bright side....this should totally make it clear to Magic that he needs to absolutely positively say nothing from now on.

How hard can it be?
