The CONS: his age (past his prime) & the duration of the contract.

The PROS: solid team mate, solid veteran leader, versatile, good defender and consistent.

The question: Does this mean Deng is our starting SF or PF? I cant see a veteran like Deng signing on for 4 years at 18M per and not starting...Starting PF

Dude played amazing in the playoffs.

Playoffs. Won't be competing in those. How about the lottery?

Beggars can't be choosers---to an extent. The price of being so bad the last few years. Lakers are in a position where they have money to spend and have to take what they can get. No FA looking to win now is coming. Contracts are going to look ridiculous with the higher cap, and agents are in a position, with Lakers especially, to demand more years.

It's going to take some years of baby-steps to develop the team. They're near the bottom, but in a market where progress needs to translate into some decent amount of wins. Lakers just want to compete as best they can as the kids mature, and Deng can help in that regard. They must feel lucky he accepted the offer.

The duration of the contract really isn't a big deal. He's 31. Won't be 32 until the end of the season. He's essentially going to be 34 or 35 by the end of the deal. Perfect time to cut ties. In the meantime he's an unselfish, smart, veteran leader who plays good defense

Just get rid of nick young and you've drastically improved the lockerroom already

Honestly I'm big on signing one more defensive minded guy. Did Austin rivers ever signed? He plays good defense

Courtney lee? He'd be nice.

I mean out of nowhere you have. Mosgov, deng and Lou Williams on this roster

All solid veteran guys. That's good. Add one more

As much as I'm on the fence about the cash being thrown around, we still need to blow some money away. This is the new NBA landscape. We'll get used to it.

Yea but like others have said Mozgov and Deng make sense in that they are positions we need, solid vets why no bad history whatsoever. Seems like the FO is intent in only bringing in players while actually seeing what they young core can do and not take way from them.

Still hard to believe Deng at that tag would be a bench player, not sure what they are planning. Depends if he is a 3 or 4, Ingram has to start but makes me wonder if they're planing on bringing in Randle from the bench.

Oh I agree. My expectations are so low right now that I'm hoping I will be pleasantly surprised after all is said and done.

Either make a big run at Allen crabbe or Arron afflalo

I think afflalo for our bench would really round things out

Maybe

Mosgov/ nance/ zubac
Deng/ Randle
Ingram/ deng
Clarkson/ afflalo
Russell/ Williams

I don't get the consternation over the Deng signing. He'll be a nice piece for us over at least the next 2 years.

Unless Ingram blows away summer league, he's coming off bench it would seem.

Think Randle starts at 4.

OTOH I could see the lakers making a statement w Randle not playing summer league and giving his starting position to  Deng...but i think it's way more "likely" w all the youth Deng starts at 3

Praying for  1. Some Cohesion (Ill fitting parts with young bucks, new guys, and those playing for next contracts may muck things up all season) 2. Better Coaching, No More Tanking (Last season was more of the latter but not sure how much of the former we can count on. Walton with something to prove this season as much as any Laker player) 3. Rookie Watch (Hoping Lonzo outshines his daddy (ROTY??), and Kuzma finds minutes and makes a push for all rook 2nd team)

READY FOR SEASON!!!

This amuses me.  Sure Deng was good...ten years ago when Kobe wanted to play with him.  The Lakers who have attempted to placate the fanbase for three years with the mantra of "cap space" have alluded to having a great plan that will form.  Guess what, these signings are pure garbage.  They are non-sensical (based upon the years of service).  Furthermore, couple this with the misses of all big FAs and the lifetime contract for Nick Young, and I have serious doubts about the whole organization.  Deng on four years, and Mozgov on four year...what's next?  We brought back Derrick McKie and Mitch Richmond.

Deng was sill good 6 weeks ago.

Kupchak told us we would go after vet leadership. He will provide that and he can still play.

I was actually thinking Randle comes off the bench unless he has improved massively. Even a slow Deng is still a plus defensively and more versatility as it stands now. I'd think Ingram would start for us no matter what.

Deng is slow at the 3 not the 4

He's above average at the 4

I think it's possible Randle goes to the bench. In reality I don't think the lakers even know who starts outside of clarkson, Russell, and mosgov

If Ingram blows everyone away in camp why would he go to the bench. If Randle does as well why would he. Deng got paid. I don't think he'll complain regardless

I actually like the signing. He may be old but he still has been doing a good job on the heat. Great leader too. If there is a 4th year team option then I think it's a great sign.
