Kupchak expects 7 guys to play on what’ll be a fun Summer League team: Randle, Clarkson, Black, J. Brown, Russell, Nance Jr. and A. Brown.

Lakers reached summer league commitments with undrafted bigs, Washington's Robert Upshaw and Arizona's Brandon Ashley, source tells RealGM.

Probably going to the first game July 10.  I am on record as being a fan of Russell...so after he is great, all the haters can't be like, "he's my favorite."

If Upshaw shows any signs of mental discipline he'll be brought to camp.

The kid's got up side, he jsut has to get his head on straight and not throw away this opportunity.

Very short leash for him.

Yeah, Upshaw is a low risk, high reward pickup. He could be so important to this team, his defense, rim protection and rebounding could be huge for a team that is made to run the floor. We got plenty of defense in this draft, I'm excited to see what this group is capable of.

Now if only we could grab something in free agency and Kobe stayed healthy, this could very well be a PO team

I was surprised Upshaw went undrafted... thought we might take him with our last pick, so this is even better.  Heck, he was leading the nation in blocked shots when he was kicked off the team, for what the ESPN morons Kellerman & Wiley surmised was weed.

see 1:07  :whatthe: :

Outside of violent acts/crimes against others (i.e. not possession of pot), which would have put him in jail, what else could it be?  He seems like a bright guy, looks focused.

see 1:22  :yikes:

Funny guy -- wearing a Washington State t-shirt lol.  Overall, great interview - seems like he's found humility, takes ownership of his bad decisions, etc.  Seems like a solid character guy now that needed to eat some humble pie, a reality check.  He basically said he knows he should be a top-10 draft pick, but because of his mistakes, he's just happy to have the chance to have been in the draft and now, earn a spot.

I'm excited to watch him fight for a roster spot... I think he can do it given the hole we have at 5.

I think it's a risk but given it's an undrafted one, the Lakers are the chance giver here that don't risk being burned hopefully.

But if Upshaw CAN get it together he essentially becomes the pick and roll defensive athletic big with post potential that you can pair with Russell and other teams can't go small against.

They also got two solid 3-D potential players as well as perimeter defenders.

Essentially if you have one of them at the 2-3 playing defense, and Randle at the 4, Upshaw at the 5 then whether you are running Clarkson with Kobe in a lineup or with Russell, 3-5 should be able to cover mistakes.

That's of course if it all panned out.   But the Lakers have positioned themselves very well, at this point it's up to the players.
