Someone (Tom Ziller) finally analized that problem a bit and came with the result we all already knew. Still, it's nice that someone finally talked a bit about tougher opponents and trips to the Finals.

For instance, last year the Heat and Spurs won their conferences. The Heat's number is an average of scoring margins of the teams they beat to get to the Finals (the Bobcats, Nets and Pacers) and the Spurs' number is an average of scoring margins of the teamsthey beat to get to the Finals (the Thunder, Blazers and Mavericks). The Heat's average East playoff opponent strength was +1.06. The Spurs' average West playoff opponent strength was +4.24.

Just confirming what we all know, the east has been weak as hell for most of the 21st century.

I think the simple stat that you have to look at is that Lebron has a losing record in the finals. Getting there is still an accomplishment even in the weak east, but going through the west where your 1st round opponent is probably better than one of the teams that will make the ECF is a lot harder.

The worst thing that could happen to Lebron this year is getting to the finals and losing again. A record of 2-4 in the finals kinda nullifies ever putting him at the table of Mike, Magic, and Bird unless he wins 3 straight after that.

Lebron will never be considered greater than MJ. He's at the table of an all time great but hes no michael.

UPDATE: Examining the teammates.

As noted, the data is from the valuable Basketball-Reference.com. If you go back through Duncan's Finals teams and subtract Duncan's Win Shares from the team total, you're left with -- on average -- a 49-win team. That's really quite good!

The same applies to Michael Jordan. (The numbers say that if you remove Jordan from the famous 72-win Bulls squad you'd still have a 55-27 squad. He had a really amazing supporting cast.) Kobe's average supporting cast during his seven Finals runs was equivalent to a 45-37 team, which is rather solid. He has a great deal of variance, though; his 2000 team would have won 54 games without him, while his 2004 team was roughly a 40-win team.

But LeBron's supporting casts have consistently been weaker than those of his Finals-heavy contemporaries. Two squads -- the 2014 Heat and 2007 Cavaliers -- would have had losing records without LeBron according to this method. Overall, LeBron's teams during his five Finals runs are barely above-average squads without him. To put it another way: None of them would be 50-win squads without him. Each of the other stars considered here have at least one 50-win supporting cast on the list, and Duncan has four.

LeBron isn't dumb. I don't think he ever gave a thought in either of his two free agencies to signing in the West. He knows it's a much easier road to the Finals in the East.

This is all interesting stuff. Good stuff man!

Man Majesty that is amazing, I didn't think the gap was that big. To think Kobe has made it to the big dance 7 times with LeBron doing it 5 times (prolly 6 this year) makes it more impressive

Also ADD since 1998 Jordans Retirement from the bulls only 5 teams from the east have won a championship since then… so in the past 16years

04- pistons
06-heat
08-celtics
12-heat
13-heat

the remaining 11 went to the west

only highlights how bad the east has been

LeBron has been more impressive this season to me in some ways, than every season except 2012,
In some ways though, he's been far less impressive.

I feel he's more of a killer now. But it's kinda easy pickings.
This Bulls teAm had Rose off a meniscus and Noah wasn't right. Pau obviously out.
His right hand men were out again but the role players REALLY EXCELLED.
OVERALL- Bron was vulnerable but still managed to get to ECF, now I think the Hawks are false.
But Teague won't hesitate to go at Kyrie.
And Hawks matchup well against the frontline of the Cavs. dC vs Bron Bron
