Longtime Lakers Trainer Gary Vitti To Leave Bench After Next Season

85738297.jpg

Change sucks. But it’s inevitable.

Gary Vitti, the man who has seen everything from Magic Johnson being diagnosed with HIV to Kobe Bryant tearing his Achilles’ tendon, will be moving into a different role in a year’s time.

According to a couple of tweets by Bill Oram from the O.C. Register, the Lakers’ longtime head trainer will be leaving the team’s bench after the 2015-16 season.

It seems that Vitti will still be a part of the Lakers organization, though his role going forward has yet to be determined, per Oram:

As Oram notes, Vitti joined the Lakers in 1984 and has amassed 8 championship rings along the way. He’s seen coaches and superstars come and go over the years, and has become a fixture on the sideline for the purple and gold.

However, Vitti turned 60-years-old last year and it seems he’s now thinking about slowing down a little. Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Vitti land a role with the team that is a little less time consuming.

Obviously, the Lakers’ longtime trainer has to travel with the team to every game, and that can take it’s toll after 30 plus years in the league, so it seems like we could see a younger trainer take his place on the bench after next season.

NBA is losing a pro in Jazz trainer Gary Briggs, who is retiring. Next up: Lakers Gary Vitti, who said he will move off bench after 2015-16.

Yeah he's a lot younger than I thought, he really put in his work these last 3 seasons with the amount of injuries we've had. Maybe he's going out with his bout Kobe?

I remember when he had a full head of curly hair. The man is more than just a trainer. He's also the team's travel logistics coordinator when they go on the road.

Who do you think we'll get someone to replace him? Isn't Vitti our head trainer?

I feel like Majesty will know who some good trainers are!

I had the privilege of checking out the Lakers locker room and got to meet him in February.

Really nice guy and spoke to all the fans who approached him (actually took photos with everyone too).

I am still shellshocked by Vitti not being here in the future.   That's all I've really known, since the bushy haired marvel cleaned Magic's wound.

I still wish Magic had played through that season and not let all the [expletive] holes like Karl Malone get to him.

Even still.. I'm still shocked by this.

Eventually, all the old and familiar faces will be gone. Chick, Dr Buss, West, PJ, Rambis, Rudy Garciduenas, Bertka, Dancing Barry, and now Vitti. Well Bertka is still with the team but is now behind the scenes. Rudy is out driving a taco truck. Who's next? Stu? Jack? Tanter?

Can't say I blame him for maybe not wanting to travel as much, he's been doing this for so long with the Lakers, it takes a toll.

Whatever happens, I hope he stays in the organization. I know nothing about medicine, but a lot of Lakers have sung his praises, so that counts for something in my book.

I met him at a restaurant in Cleveland in December 2007.  Very kind.   Acted very interested.   McKechnie and Hamblem kept trying to get him to leave, but he wanted to talk.  He seemed pleased that he was recognized.

Sucks to see him leave from a selfish point of view, but wish him the best moving forward after next year and hope he takes some time to enjoy all he's accomplished.   Sounds like the players will be losing a genuinely good person from how you all describe Gary in person.

This will teach the league to basketball reason Lakers

Sharman too.

Not sure Dancing Barry deserves mention with this list but i remember his forum days well.

What a loon.

And i can't be sure if Vitti isn't being eased out by the organization with the last 3 injury laden seasons.

Lakers need some new blood in the training area for sure.

Praying for  1. Some Cohesion (Ill fitting parts with young bucks, new guys, and those playing for next contracts may muck things up all season) 2. Better Coaching, No More Tanking (Last season was more of the latter but not sure how much of the former we can count on. Walton with something to prove this season as much as any Laker player) 3. Rookie Watch (Hoping Lonzo outshines his daddy (ROTY??), and Kuzma finds minutes and makes a push for all rook 2nd team)

READY FOR SEASON!!!

Are the sun's training staff up for contract renewal any time soon?
