ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders have released former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell after three unproductive and highly paid seasons.

Senior executive John Herrera told The Associated Press the move was made Thursday and that "we wish him well."

The decision comes less than two weeks after Oakland acquired Jason Campbell from Washington to take over at quarterback.

Russell will now likely be considered the biggest draft bust in NFL history. He will have been paid more than $39 million by the Raiders, while producing only seven wins as a starter.

He lost his starting job midway through last season. His career has been hampered by a rookie holdout, poor work habits, being overweight and the lack of productive players around him.

Like I said before, it's all on him as far as work ethic and things like that but you can't help but believe that he was thrown into a bad situation.

Wouldn't mind the Cowboys picking him up...we need a younger backup to compete with McGee...Kitna is getting old too

I've been a Raider fan for a while, but I have not watched a game in two years. And I will continue to not watch until Al Davis is long gone from the organization.

I have a feeling the Bears might pick him up...they have a history of paying bad QB's...:\

THANK GOD! :omg:

Like I said before, it's all on him as far as work ethic and things like that but you can't help but believe that he was thrown into a bad situation.

he really wasn't in THAT bad of a situation. the guy just flat out sucked. you can't teach a quarterback accuracy. i mean he would miss WIDE OPEN guys. it was just SO bad to watch. his timing in the pocket was horrible. sometimes he would wait SO LONG to throw it. and there are a few quarterbacks that do it, BUT he would lose the ball and fumble like 90% of the time. and i dont just mean fumble, i mean he would fumble AND the other team would most definitely pick it up. and sometimes he would do his drop step and then cower into a ball cuz he thought he would get sacked even if there wasn't any opposing players around him. it was just so

Wouldn't mind the Cowboys picking him up...we need a younger backup to compete with McGee...Kitna is getting old too

the biggest franchise in the NFL should NOT and will not pick this guy up. if they do GREAT. cuz im a 49ers fan first.

It was funny as hell when a internet blogger said Russel had Energy Conservation Disease on April Fools Day and the Oakland Evening News ran it like it was a real story!

Yeh. Campbell isn't really that good lol

We faced him two times this year and he only put up 6 points against us in both games combined. But to be fair he didn't really have anything else on offense to help last year

As bad as he was, we also didn't have a O-Line nor a true 1 WR. But this is a good step, hopefully we return to glory.
