MAN. That's pretty sick.

I have mine. Paid $535 a long time ago.

My first one was a 20GB that overheated because of Madden and GTA4. RIP 20GB.

Seriously... I'm going to have to pick up a new one. @ $300 this is a freaking steal!

I bought my launch 60GB PS3 for $600. Yes, $600. And it's been worth every penny. To pick up a spare for my room upstairs or my 2nd living room would be freaking awesome. Sony finally stepping up.

Not sure how MS is going to respond [other than another price drop on the elite] because as it stands now, a $300 120GB PS3 >>> a $300 120GB 360. EASILY.

That is correct. All current PS3's are also now $299 or below. I wouldn't be too surprised if you can find a "phat" PS3 somewhere for ~$250 soon because people/retailers will be all over the slim.

Looks like a cheap piece of plastic to me.......

But I paid like $600 for mine, cuz I got it the first day it came out.

Might look into this one though, I want my own PS3 for my room.

any word on backward compatibility? it's not a big deal for me personally, but some people do love some of the ps2 games out there. i still don't have a ps3. but i'm getting this one for sure.

I would agree with that, but I don't think the average consumer would. For some reason the 360 is regarded as better than the PS3 even other than in price advantage, which I don't get because I think the better games are on the PS3, but to each his own.

According to this, the slim is not backwards compatible.

G4 Article

Given that Sony didn't make a note of it at its GamesCom press conference, most assumed the impending slimmer version of the PlayStation 3 would not have backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 games. In the official press release announcing the new hardware, this suspicion has been confirmed: there is no compatibility.

"Note: This product is not compatible with PlayStation 2 games," reads the release.

Does this influence your thinking about the new model at all?

If you were concerned about backwards compatibility you've been out of luck for a while though, no systems have it except like the original 60GB system like I have. And with the $300 price difference you could just get a PS2 I suppose. There still is a rumor that Sony might add BC later via a firmware update though.

Those are some awesome pics. I'm thinking of buying one, or getting a Macbook. Which would you guys prefer?

Lol, where in the world did you get that from? Sony has been stupid, but why would they offer it for that price for a week? It COMES OUT the first week of September, $299 is it's price.

BC costs too much for them to produce so theres not much point in waiting for a BC system that likely isnt happening
and for the record MS is making a killing in sales in the US havent heard about Europe in awhile but last i heard its not doing too bad and of course its flopping in Japan like usual so im not exactly sure what they would be worried about it

I love when the fanboys take the bait. It's so satisfying.

Oh, and a little comparison from someone at NeoGAF for you all:
