Among hoops-loving Chinese, it's a slam dunk: Kobe is king

By Kelly Whiteside, USA TODAY

BEIJING — To understand Kobe Bryant's surreal popularity here, pick up a copy of one of the city's most widely read and respected newspapers, the Beijing Youth Daily. A glossy poster of Bryant in his U.S. jersey was wrapped around the outside of the newspaper on Wednesday. The headline, translated, reads: "Kobe: Nobody can compare."
. . .

Earlier this year, Nike China launched a Bryant reality TV show called Kobe Mentu or "Kobe's Disciples." Finalists chosen from hundreds of applicants in China were selected and traveled to the USA to become "Kobe Disciples." Their experience learning about basketball from Bryant became a six-episode documentary.

The globalization of one Kobe Bean Bryant has begun in earnest. Next stop... Italy? Seriously, it's good PR for 24. Bryant is somewhat of a major sports deity in the country surpassing their own Yao Ming who isn't too shabby to begin with.
Five guys on the court working together can achieve more than five talented individuals who come and go as individuals.
