90040890NG016_DET_LALTonight’s game was infinitely better than the past few for L.A.. The Lakers played with a lot more energy and hit the open looks. It all started with defense and that led to many easy transition baskets.

It looked pretty bad early in the first as Kobe airballed a jumper and the Lakers gave up many easy buckets in the paint.

Many things just went right for the Lakers as the bench came through and provided consistency all game long.

The only player that really shot poorly was Fisher

The Lakers really controlled this game all night long. They struggled a bit in the fourth, but closed it out strong in the final few minutes. It was great to see the bench play consistent tonight.

The Lakers also had 27 assists to only 12 turnovers for the game and held the Pistons to only 93 points locking up free tacos for the Staples Center fans.

Now, the bests of the day…

Top 3 Laker Performers -

1) Kobe broke out of his shooting slump with his 100th 40 point game on 17-29 shooting.

2) Bynum had yet another double double with 17 and 12.

3) Lamar continues to do a bit of everything with 8 points, 8 boards, and 8 assists.

Lakers Smush of the Day (Note: STD denotes the Laker that played the poorest): Fisher didn’t hit a field goal.

Play of the Night: Kobe’s Jordan-esque reverse layup over the shoulder?

What to Look for Next Game: Pau’s return vs. Chicago Thursday night at Staples. Can I hear a BOOM-BOOM-PAU?

This game was a blow out and should have never been as close as it was near the end of the 4th. The bench needs help. I know Kobe said it’s missing their best player in Lamar but I don’t see any consistancy at all in any of the other players other than Shannon Brown. Farmar is up and down and Vujacic doesn’t even get any meaningful minutes anymore. Shannon has definately earned one of the backup guard spots meaning one of the other guys have to go. With the Lakers not offering Farmar a contract extension, that means their not really keen on keeping him which makes him the odd man out. I think Vujacic deserves at least one more shot at consistant minutes as Kobe’s backup this year to see if he can be the players the Lakers want him to be. If he can’t, next year he can be used as trade bait for an expiring contract. With Fluke Walton out for six weeks (thank goodness), what the Lakers need to do is not resign Gaffney but make a trade. A trade of all trades that will solidify the 2nd unit and bring some stability to the rotation.

The New Orleans Hornets as we all have heard are pretty much done for the year. They are trying to get under the salary cap and are even trying to shop their starting center Emeka Okofor. The owner is trying to dump salary where ever he can. The Lakers, with Walton’s injury, need a backup SF. They need to step up and grab Posey. You guys will say the Hornets will never want to help the Lakers. Well, that may be true, but if your an owner who’s depserate to get under the luxury tax or rid yourself of bad contracts, you’ll definately make a trade that will benefit you. Being as though the Hornets won’t make the playoffs this year anyways, I’m sure they’ll do what’s best for them.

The Lakers offer Adam Morrison and his $5.25 expiring contract along with Farmar and his $1.9 expiring contract for Posey who has 3 years at $6 million left on his and Devin Brown and his $1.1 million contract, who is a throw in just to match salary purposes. The Lakers then turn around and buyout Brown. The Hornets will be clearing over $7 million in salary cap space next season as opposed to paying Posey $6 million for the next 3 seasons.

This will make the Lakers 2nd unit consist of Brown, Vujacic, Posey, Odom, and either Gasol or Bynum at center. With a more clear cut rotation of guards, it might put a little more confidence in Vujacic in knowing he will play every night and not have to press so hard to impress the coaches for more playing time by playing well. The Lakers 2nd unit will definately be able to maintain leads and hold down the fort for the starters and Posey will definately help on the defensive end as well as being capable of knocking down the open three.

It’s a good thing you’re not our GM and Mitch is. For the life of me, I get so amused by all of the so called internet experts that think they know how to put a team together better than Mitch.

And saying a comment like “thank goodness” about one of our BEST ROLE players being out is just sad. What kind of Laker fan are you that you would be happy that one of our guys is hurt? I’ll tell you…..PATHETIC!!!!

  • drive-for-16th

NO MATTER WHAT , VUJACIC HAS TO BE THE ONE TO LEAVE NO MORE CHANCES NO MORE OF HIS CRAP, EVERYBODY IS DONE WITH HIM THATS WHY PHIL DOESN’T EVEN PLAY HIM ANY MORE, HES GARBABE, WE SHULD TRY TO GET STACKHOUSE, I LIKE POSEY TOO WE SHULD TRADE FOR HIM. ADAM MORRISON AND VUJACIC EQUAL TO 10 MILLION FUCKIN DOLLARS, AND WHAT DO THEY DO JUST SIT ON THE FUCKING BENCH AND JACK OFF CAUSE THEY BOTH SUCK. THIS IS REALITY AND THIS IS A BUSSINESS, THIS HAS TO HAPPEN THIS YEAR AND WE NEED TO TRADE ADAM FOR TEAMS WANTING EXPIRING CONTRACTS CAUSE HIS ENDS AFTER THIS SEASON. AND VUJACIC WONT GET ANOTHER CONTRACT I DONT KNOW WHAT LAKERS WERE THINKING GIVING HIM 5 MILLION A YEAR, FOR 2 POINTS A NIGHT. LETS MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN AND GET BETTER. GO LAKERS. GOOD WIN TONIGHT.

  • willmo

Good win tonight but whoever said that the bench was consistant needs to start watching the last 2 minutes of the 3rd qtr and follow on through until about 3 minutes left when the starters had to close it out. The bench let the lead slip from 26 to 7. Josh Powell and Shannon have been the only bright spots off the bench. At least Farmar had a decent game for once, I guess we’ll have to wait till 2010 for his next one. I love DFish but he looks dreadful out there and can’t hit a shot or guard anyone.
Can’t wait to see #16 suit up on thursday and dominate inside with Drew.

  • etreyy08

PLEase no POSEY hated that guy in the 08 finals and he hasn’t produced at all for new orleans. Take Gaffney and trade morrison/sasha/and farmar to address our biggest weakness at the point

    • WifelovesLuke

Trade this guy….trade that guy….it doesn’t matter. You’ll just be unhappy with the next guy and you’ll want him to be trades as well. Sad little fan!!!

  • Jim

I posted this on the Stackhouse thread, is this a possibility? I would hate to see another contender get this guy.

I heard Monta Ellis is on the block,I don’t know how the salaries match up, but I wonder if Golden State would take Farmar, Sasha and Luke for him? He’s a quick small point guard with some serious offensive skills. He’s torched the Lakers on more than one occasion.

  • http://LakersNation Marwan

Monta Ellis is a big ‘YES!’. Sign that guy for whatever he wants, he can do it all. During the preseason he lit the Lakers up with his shots, and he is the fastest guy in the league so this guy can score and can keep up with younger guards. I say trade Morrison and Vujacic for him, Please Mitch!

Also, sign Stackhouse. This man will be a great backup to Kobe and he is a vet so he knows how to handle adversity and how not to let leads go.

Gaffney didnt show much in his time of play, so I say dont sign him.

Posey will be a big help too, he is a great shooter and in the 2008 Finals, he was on fire. He helped New Orleans out too, last season when he hit a clutch 3 pointer to put Hornets up by 3 against us, until DFish hit the game tying 3.

I want the bench to be Odom, Brown, Stackhouse, Ellis, Powell, Posey, Mbenga, Farmar

    • KB24

NO WAY! Why do that when we can get Lebron, Wade, and Chris Paul! Lebron would be our sf, Wade can back up Kobe and Cp3 would solve our point guard problem! COME ON MITCH!!!! YOU CAN DO IT! WORK YOUR MAGIC!

      • http://LakersNation Marwan

While Mitch at it, why doesnt he make it rain championship rings in LA (Clippers), make Sasha win MVP and solve the reason for why AI is so bad.

Get real, as much as Id love to have them on the team, its just not possible. The economy now just makes chances worse. Ellis, Posey and Stackhouse are real picks.

  • drive-for-16th

NO ELLIS WOULD START, FISHER HAS TO HIT THE FUCKING BENCH. HES 35 HES OLD ASS FUCK, HES OUR BIGGEST WEAKNESS ON THE POINT, PEOPLE PICK ON HIM WHEN THEY WANT TO ATTACK US.

    • WifelovesLuke

Disrespecting D-Fish like you are is pathetic! I agree with 242LakerFan below. Fish deserves better than what you are doing. Clean it up, dude. Be a better man than the crap you typed!

  • 242LakerFan

This constant ripping on D-Fish is making me puke. You guys need to tone it down and have some respect for a guy that contributed in no small measure to the last 4 Laker Chips.
Yeah, he’s older, he’s faltering a bit, he’s always been slow, but our biggest weakness? Hardly.
And why the language? I mean, here’s one of the class acts in NBA history, and you guys are talking about him like he woke up this morning and turned into a combination of Smush Parker and Allen Iverson or something.
    Give me a break!
He of all people knows he can’t go like he used to, but he’s going to give us everything he has left and Phil will not let him hurt the team.
He deserves way better than the treatment he’s getting here. We all should bow down, kiss his laces and Shut the Hell Up!

    • WifelovesLuke

      Amen!!

      • brilliantn

finally someone stands up for D-Fish. He’s my fav. Laker and he’s been taking a verbal beating this year on thelakersnation.

        nice Deron Williams beard+mustache

  • Benchslobs

The Lakers will never win another title with this bench. They can never protect a lead. Mitch needs to revamp the whole bench!!!

    • WifelovesLuke

Sad “fan” hitting the panic button 12 games into a 82 game season. SAD. You do realize that they are 9-3 right?

      • WifelovesLuke

        My bad…..8-3

    • Short Dog

What’s crackin Carnal. It was a walk on the park.
      Lakers #1

  • mr.laker19

We do need to start addressing our PG issue. We cant beat good teams with fisher getting the bulk of the minutes, we just cant. I think shanon should get some of those minutes. And im def down for trading sasha and farmar for someone more consistent, ellis wouldnt be bad. Also picking up stack or iverson isnt bad either. But we cant really judge us until thursday, when pau is back

On another note…. Glad to see Kobe is back, hope he keeps this up. But it has been an honor and a privilege to watch this man play basketball. He is the most skilled player ive ever seen, and to me, the best ever. I kno I will shed tears when he retires, but until then, let the Mamba live on!

    • http://LakersNation Marwan

Wouldnt all of LA be crying when he retires. But hopefully thats not for a long time, he said he wants to play into his 40s.

  • WifelovesLuke

We’ve played 11 games so far without Pau. Our rotations are screwed up because of various injuries. We’ve won 8 games and still have a favorable home schedule for the next 10 games and all of you “fair weather fans” are calling for trades? Some of you are even resorting to bashing D-Fish?

    ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC AND EMBARASSING!!!!

    • http://LakersNation Marwan

DFish is an amazing player, whether he is producing for Lakers or not, I am still honored that he is playing for us. This man is an absolutely… well you cant find another DFish anywhere. This man has class, doesnt showboat when he hits a clutch shot, he is involved in charity funds and more. Seriously what more can you ask from him? I just ask that he continues to do what he does now whether its produce or not.

  • The Mamba24

To the people bad mouthing Fish, can I ask one question? Were you talking all that nonsense at the end of Game 4 of the 2009 Finals? If not the SHUT THE HELL UP. The team is 8-3 (second in the league) and we still have Pau to come back from injury. Don’t say s**t if you f*****g don’t know s**t.

    • http://LakersNation Marwan

      Amen to that brother.

  • drive-for-16th

to the people who think the point isnt our weakness haven’t bin watching games. I luv derek fisher too but we need a better point guard, we can put him on the bench if get a good point guard, he can be the veteran that can help the younger guys out off the bench. Dont get crazy thinkin people bashing on fisher cause we dont like that, it cause its hard too seee every fucking game him get owned by EVERY point guard in the league. Thats why the lakers need to start making some trade for tools like vujacic and morrison who are producing nothing. Maybe we should go for monta ellis. MITCH DO SOMETHING!
