90040750LM007_LAKERS_THUNDERThe Lakers improved to 3-1 on the new season despite some poor play against the young and energetic Thunder Tuesday night. It took 53 minutes and a great second half from Kobe for the Lakers to put this one in the books.

Turnovers were the biggest problem for the Lakers tonight. 25 turnovers off plenty of poor decisions from just about everyone on the team! Get this statistic — no Laker starter had less than 4 turnovers! I don’t think you will ever see that from any NBA team ever! Kobe led the way with seven turnovers. I guess the good sign was that our bench only had 2.

The Thunder themselves weren’t much cleaner with 21 turnovers themselves.

The Lakers however, made it up with good shooting by hitting 52% of their shots and 5 of 11 from behind the arc. They also held the Thunder to only 43% shooting and 6 of 23 from three point land.

The Lakers played pretty good defense tonight on Durant… while he did have 28 points, he took 24 shots and had his share of turnovers with seven.

Now, the bests of the day…

Top 3 Laker Performers

1) Artest had his 2nd consecutive great game. 20 points on 8 shots, 6 assists and 5 steals with very good defense throughout the game.

2) Bynum took care of business in the middle with another double double. He finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

3) Kobe’s seven turnovers keeps him from #3 today. Instead Lamar played pretty solid all night doing a bit of everything.

Lakers Smush of the Day (Note: STD denotes the Laker that played the poorest): Luke didn’t really do anything to help the team today.

Play of the Night: Kobe’s jumper to put the Lakers up for the lead.

What to Look for Next Game: Ariza’s return against the Lakers… should be fun!

  • lakers#1

Andrew Bynum will make the all star team this season. No doubt

  • Batz

One of the worst officiating I’ve personally ever seen. I never shouted at the T.V. in my entire life…

    • Megan Fox JJC

Amen to that! That late game drive by Kobe was ridiculous. Kobe got hacked on the arm, and took down. He fell on the floor … no foul called. On the other end, Fisher lightly bumps into Thunder point guard, foul called.

    • touching_myself

Get used to it! It seems like that the officiating has been consistently bad for our Lakers so far. I’m just glad to see that our boys were able to play through that especially with Kobe having the flu and all.

Too bad that with the combination of the absence of Pau and the poor showing of our bench and the sub par shooting of our starters we couldn’t overcome the Mavericks. I wouldn’t have taken that loss as badly as I did if it weren’t for Cuban and his smug look-that motha fcuka! Hate that douche bag!

The positives throughout the 1st 4 games are: Bynum dominating all the centers so far, LO shooting has vastly improved (except for his air ball free throw…ha!), Artest locking everyone down, and Kobe being Kobe!

      Go Lakers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i cant believe these calls against artest and kobe when their are fighting for position on the block. its a joke, they aren’t getting anything

artest is getting no love, probably from reputation alone! but if he continues to play through despite the bad calls, hopefully the refs will come back around.

as far as kobe, i don’t really remember kobe getting the calls that a “superstar” would be getting. lebrick gets them, wade gets them, but kobe always seem like that he needs to work a little harder at getting those calls.

i just think that it’s shameful that kobe’s been treated like that when he’s the face of the league still. the NBA is in such a hurry to prop lebum up as the next poster boy that they’re quickly pushing kobe out the door. i’m glad that kobe’s shown them that he’s still the man on the throne by defeating lecrap both times last season even with a badly dislocated digit on his SHOOTING hand, and by getting to the FINALS and winning!

it’s not even the no calls against our guys, it’s the fact that when the refs let all this crap go… more and more stupid physical plays will come in. like when someone when over the back on bynum last night after he got the rebound and there was a no call. that’s extremely dangerous, especially, considering bynum’s had injuries to both knees.

a no call is one thing, but they’ve really gotten reel in the dangerous and reckless fouls!

  • Biznit

Yes. Bad officiating. We got the benefit of most calls though. They got 0 freethrows in the fourth. We got 11.

    • Sean All Ivy

      We deserved 20

      • Megan Fox JJC

They got 0 because we didn’t foul them in act of shooting =P. Yes. We should have gotten like 15-20 FTs.

    • nickp

Bad officiating = the 2 minute stint where we didn’t even get to attempt a shot because of poor calls/no-calls.

  • Day

Maybe its just my Laker bias but I never seem to see such bad officiating outside of Laker games ( and I watch plenty of NBA games ). It is pretty ridiculous.

  • shannon4mvp

These are the minutes our guys played vs. the “thunder? ”
    D. Fisher – 34:48
    K. Bryant – 45:41 – WITH THE FLU,FEVER,ETC…
    A. Bynum – 48:42
    L. Odom – 42:57
    R. Artest – 46:54

Bench needs to be smacked up a lil bit, fuk. these guys are playing toooo many minutes.

  • nickp

This has to be the worst review I’ve ever read.
    Kobe’s play was awful.
Sure he had the flu..but that doesn’t mean he has to ballhog and take ridiculously awful shots.
He turned over the ball in cruicial moments of the last few minutes.
He took several retarded fad-eaways. I was keeping track. He was 1-5 in the last 2 minutes of the game before the overtime.
He fumbled the ball and turned it over twice.
The officiating was terrible. It almost looked like they officials were trying to hand the game to Thunder.
The last 4-5 minutes of the game went something like:
Thunder makes basket to pull within 2.
    Lakers called for offensive foul.
    Thunder makes airballs.
    Lakers turnover.
    Thunder misses badly.
    Lakers 3 second count.
    Thunder airballs.
Kobe drives in and gets a no-call. Instead gets slapped with a turnover.
Thunder makes a basket to tie the game.
Lakers called for another offensive foul.

    It was just ridiculous.

    • Day

Kobe should have had -3 or 4 TO’s and they should have been fouls. He didn’t play as bad as it looked with all of the no-calls.

      • skim

        true dat

    • atomicpunk

nickp you are so right on with Kobe.I thought for sure he was going to shoot us right outta the game. I n the last 2 minutes of the game everyone just stands around and watches Kobe.I wish they would just run their offense like they do at the beginning tof the game.

  • lakers2000

Bring back the sub referees! They called the game better than these clowns. They can’t even get out of the damn way. Did anyone else see Kobe’s turnover caused by the official! Un-freaking-believable!

  • Myself

The bench needs to get the Smush of the season so far. The starters are playing too many minutes!

  • lainok

The smush of the day should go to Odom. He played okay for the game, but any nba player that airballs a freethrow in the final seconds of a game get’s automatic smush honors.

  • T-Dub

Nobody’s saying anything about how bad this bench is. The starters will be worn out at the end of the year playing these type of minutes!

  • Celts4ever

Is this the same team who wants to face the Celts in the finals? I dont think so!! My Celts are going 82-0.

    • ilikebasketball

your celtics started out strong last year, as well. we beat them and then they were just slightly above 500 for the next 3 or 4 months.

  • The Mamba24

When Pau returns, Odom goes to the bench and everything will be fine. Right now there is no one on the bench who can make plays and create their own shot. I’m not worried.

    • ilikebasketball

      exactly what will happen. exactly.

though it is still scary that our bench can’t handle things like this.

maybe artest should not start. and brown can start.

and artest can come in play defense strong and be the offense threat that he is used to.

  • LakeShow15chips

  • WatWudChickSay? (WWCS)

Three things I notice which account for the “spotty” play so far:

First, no Pau: his high post play and ability to play in that 10′-15′ range helps open up the lane.

Second, the team has definitely not come out with the same urgency as they did at the start of last season.

Third, the Bench has absolutely sucked thus far. Perhaps Pau coming back and Lamar/Bynum playing minutes with them will help steady their play. Right now our 6-10 look like a YMCA Old Guy League.

The Lakers cannot let the Celtics get home court.

  • PurpsNGold

Do people just assume that Ron Artest is going to have a good Defensive game? How can u say that RonRon had a good defensive game? Durant Scored 28 and he made a shitload of shots in Rons Face in the first half..

I think RonRon is losing his touch for defense, though I can tell he enjoys playing it.

Also he could have more points if he made his Freethrows..

  • WifelovesLuke

    LOVE IT!!!

Laker fans are crying over everything already and Celtic fans are calling for an 82-0 season.

Guys, we are 3-1 and the Celtics are 5-0 and all of a sudden everybody thinks they have a clear picture of the Finals?

    Breathe in…..breathe out…….feel better?

    1-2-3 Ring!

    • ilikebasketball

always the voice of reason. Much appreciated.

  • Shannon4mvp

Screw the celdicks this is how they started last year too and look what happened to them by playing to hard in the beggining. The only thing we should maybe is the bench like why is it when farmar comes in he tries to hard to be like Steve Nash tries to make stupid passes and which lead to turnovers. I swear to god we need a better backup for Kobe he plays too many minutes along side fish. The bench needs to get their act together and help out a lil or else if guys r gonna play heavy minutes like last night then wats the point of the bench we should dealt try to get sum people who will do sumthing. I know we are only 4 games in but that bench has let everyone down so far. I think this season look for sum of these guys to get traded…
