TLN’s Postgame Report: Lakers @ Rockets

lakerswThe Lakers won their second game of the short road trip, another game down to the wire that ended up with a win in overtime.

The Lakers played in my opinion a very poor first half. They took tons of jump shots and showed very little aggressiveness.

Usually we may have one or two players settling for jumpers, but tonight we saw Kobe taking fadeaways, Lamar and Powell shooting threes and fadeaways, Brown taking off balanced jumpers, and more. The only points in the paint were basically off offensive boards.

I’m not sure what Phil said during halftime but the Lakers play a lot smarter in the second half. It may not show as well in the box score, because Houston stepped up as well, but it was a much cleaner second half.

The Lakers backcourt combined for 41 points, all scored by Kobe. Three other Lakers hit double figures, despite shooting only 41% as a team.

After last nights turnover madness, it was great to see the team with only 9 turnovers.

It was also great to see Artest come through with another solid game including a HUGE three pointer to put the Lakers up three before Ariza answered back.

Now, the bests of the day…

Top 3 Laker Performers -

1) Kobe’s second 40 point game of the season was everything L.A. needed tonight. He also had 4 steals.

2) Bynum took care of business in the middle again with 17 points and 17 boards! 5 assists and 3 blocks too!

3) Artest had 15 points and hit 3 threes, including one huge three with 40 seconds remaining.

Lakers Smush of the Day (Note: STD denotes the Laker that played the poorest): Shannon Brown took some terrible shots and didn’t really help us much today.

Play of the Night: Artest’s final minute shooting and defense.

What to Look for Next Game: A high scoring game as Iverson comes to Los Angeles Friday night.

I’m glad to see Ron Ron hitting some big shots! Let’s all hope Drew is alright. Its funny how 41 points from Kobe just kinda seems like “cool, Kobe had a decent game tonight”. The guy is just that good!

  • shannon4mvp

back to back both overtimes and starters played over 40 mins a in both, daamn.

  • PurpsNGold

We really need Gasol back.. I think what we’re missing his intelligence in the middle.. He makes the offense a little bit smoother with his passing and anticipation..

Btw.. Do U always assume that Ron Artest plays good Defense all the time? I think he might have lost a step or two on his defense. Lakers gave up a lot of lay-up this game, good defense? Ummm, naw..

A weak game against the clips, a pounding by the mavs, a so so game against the hawks and two straight overtimes. With Gasol in the line up, none of that happens. The bench isn’t playing well, but would definately improve if Odom was coming off the bench with them. Gasol would be a stronger presence under the basket with Bynum than Odom. The only thing I think Phil needs to let go of is playing sasha at all. When the starters need a break, put farmar at the point and Brown at the SG. If Phil knows that eventually the team is going to let Farmar go, and wants to give Brown time running the show, then put him out there when Kobe is on the floor. But please no more Vujacic. And is it me, or does every guy on that team seem to be playing like they are Kobe? Not just second unit guys, but 3rd guy down the bench dudes are launching it at the basket like they once scored 81 in a game.

Like the post but nothing wrong with Kobe taking fade-away’s. Hell, he shoots better fading away :)

  • Smush Walton

The best thing about Artest joining the team is that Luke’s minutes are WAY DOWN! Luke’s shot is a disaster so anything we can do to keep him on the bench is huge. I can’t wait till we can flush this turkey!

  • SD Anthony

I wanted Lamar back worse than anything. He definately does not have the make up of a starter anymore. He is lazy, plays like he has downs, and appears to throw anvils around the rim when he gets in close. We don’t even need to mention the rest of the bench because they are an embarresment to themselves and this organization.
Still I fully expect this team to repeat as long as we are full strength and anything short of that will be Kobe’s fault regardless of anyone else. That is the role that he has now created for himself. NO EXCUSES!
I’m not usually so down on this squad but the mental lapses and playing down to their competition is driving me batty.

The problems for us are: Gasol, we need him bad but HEALTHY do not rush anything and hopefully he will be at 100% once he gets back.
Then the bench, many people say the bench will be better when LO gets back to the bench but I would like for Mitch to find a player somewhere that can play good D and can handle the ball well. One guy that I had in mind before the season started was Ronald Murray but he is with Bobcats.
I can only hope Mitch work his magic again and get something for Farmar or something at this point Sasha is utter crap no one will trade for him or Adam Morrison unless some team will like that 5M $ off their payroll, no one will trade for Fluke either; at least Farmar is still young and he might do better playing in a different system. I can only hope. Lol
In the mean time Go Lakers…

  • The Mamba24

The team is 4-1. What the hell are y’all b!tching about? I thought it was about winning. The team is not at full strength and its a 82 game season. CALM THE FCUK DOWN. Damn.

    • gugy

      Mamba 24,

      you are right.

People need to stop bitching about this. We are winning and soon Gasol will be back and things will be better.

    • WifelovesLuke

Thank God someone finally said it. All you other whiners saying “trade Luke, Sasha, Farmar, Morrison” just sound like ingnorant “fans” rather than educated basketball viewers. THEY ARE ROLE PLAYERS!!!

Luke- good passer in the triangle/ bad jump shot/ wife loves him but not his facial hair…lol
Farmar- changes the pace of the game/ has elf ears
      Morrison- ……wait, I’m still thinking….lol
      Sasha- ….ah, screw it…..lol

      • NBAmazingKB24

Morrison- He needs to stop running with his head down
Sasha- Too busy with his new gf. Maria Sharapova (Super tennis player)

        • WifelovesLuke

          Priceless!

      • Popcorn

Lol, that made laugh. Hopefully will be OK. I still say we need much more from the bench though.

  • mon

Celtics is a short term team.
You guy got way to many oldies in your team.
      Ray Allen: 34
      Kevin Garnet: 33
      Paul PIerce: 32
      R. Wallace: 35
      SHORT TERM TEAM! For sure!
      Celtics will vanish very soon…

While the lakers are sill Young!!!…
Its not about how you start the season
Its about how you end the season (play-offs)
