The Lakers opened the 2008 playoffs with a bang and a Pau! But before I get into the stats of the game, let me get this out. The Nuggets are awful! I don’t know how they stayed within 20 of us seeing how all they do is shoot jump shots and make poor defensive matchups. I guess putting K-Mart on Kobe worked because they only gave up 128?

The Lakers tonight shot 50% including 9 threes. The Lakers had 45 boards today, 33 assists to only 12 turnovers. The key for the Lakers was the interior passing as everyone (except Kobe) got involved. It seemed to me that while everyone was making great passes to each other, Kobe felt it was necessary to shoot contested fadeaway jumpers on his way to 9-26 shooting. When you have a PF on you, DRIVE TO THE BASKET!

In the end though, the Lakers won the game by 14 and we all know that is what counts. My favorite part of the game was Staples Center fans chanting D.U.I. when Carmelo went to the stripe.

Now, the bests of the night…

Top 3 Laker Performers -

1) I don’t even think that I need to say his name. 36 points on 14-20 FGs, 8-8 from the line, 16 boards, 8 assists, 3 blocks.

2) Lamar played amazing for the Lakers again. 8-14 shooting for 17 points. He also had 14 boards and 7 assists.

3) When Vlad got 2 quick fouls, Luke came in and played superb. 16 points on 6-8 FGs, to go with 4 boards and 5 assists. Good going Luke!

Lakers Smush of the Day (Note: STD denotes the Laker that played the poorest): Kobe because of his decision to take horrible shots and well, you all saw the game.

Play of the Game: I don’t remember the exact sequence. I think it was Fisher to Pau to Lamar with the fake shot pass to Pau for the stuff… it was early on in the game, I’m sure you all remember it.

What to Look for Next Game: Look for the Lakers to blow out the Nuggets.

Game is Wednesday @ 7:30 PM. If you need tickets, I have season tickets in sec 316 for sale @ $125 each if you mention TLN, contact me at LakersDynasty999@GMail.com.

kobe gotta stop talkin trash on the court
everyone plays bad every now and then
    not a big deal
but dont act like “no one can guard me” especially when you missed almost every shot you have taken in the ball game
that just makes you very childish
you dont need to talk trash kobe, we all know they cant stop you
we all know you are the best
just play good ball next game, which i think you well!

    go Pau!!!!

Don’t be a Dingleberry!!! Fish was a +29 when he was on the court. He helped move the ball in the offense. He played good D had 4 assists and 3 rebs. Kobe played much more and was only 9-26 but also tended to ruin chemistry by holding the ball and going one on one. Kobe did not help the offense move the ball hence he was only a +3 when in the game. He also had only one assists and 3 rebounds. Good job Avery. It took guts to name Kobe. Be ready for some backlash for kobeonly fans like Dingleberry. Hopefully he is the only one who doesn’t understand basketball.

  • http://k1k0.com KiKosDad

I don’t really care for the way they chanted D.U.I. Its a tasteless/classless act. Why do some of us need to show this kind of immature behavior? Why step down to that level? Do we really need this kind of low class heckling?

    That’s a little disappointing…

If they had all these wide open shots and dunks thanks to kobe being double teamed then why did Kobe have only one assist??? You don’t always have to make kobe look good. There are times he doesn’t have a good game. Also give credit to Kmart. He played D on Kobe.

Kobe didn’t have more assists because his nice passes led to assists. This isn’t hockey, so those don’t count, but Kobe set up a lot of the passes that led to shots.

Thanks abs…i hate to name kobe as the std, but today i really felt he ruined what we had going on. in the fourth, we were up 20, and then he started playing completely one on one. when you start 2-12, you should get your teammates involved more…today would have been a perfect night for 15 points and 10 assists for kobe.

in the end pau carried us and a win is a win!

Ballerv8 Kobe’s +/- was +3. All other starters where in their 20′s. This shows kobe wasn’t helping the offense run smoothly. He wasn’t setting up teammates, he was stifling them. He is allowed to have a bad game.

Completely agree on Kobe and glad to see it’s finally being noticed by other Lakers fans. He’s done it plenty of times this season. It seems for every good thing there is a bad thing. He doesn’t seem to have learned to trust his teammates yet, despite how well they played.

  • iLakers

[Comment ID #33364 Will Be Quoted Here]

Yea Kobe played not as good as he usually does but he also had some big shots in there…and those 1-on-1 shots he took…well thats part of Kobe’s game. We all know that in order to score you have to take shots. And as a scorer, Kobe has to take shots. Im sure going into the half he knew he was off, but he’s a scorer, and the best F-en baller in the league, are YOU gonna tell him to stop shooting. And don’t say he could have passed the ball (which he did) instead of taking those shots, Kobe is Kobe because he takes and most of the time makes those shots. And yes he could have drove to the basket, but its obvious K-Mart is a better defender (as a PF) than WE all thought. In any case if you want to drive to the basket you have to make the defender respect your shot and play you close. K-Mart wasn’t respecting Kobe’s shot, so Kobe took em…and missed em. But i dont expect that to happen next game.

hahaha…ok, so Kobe only got a +3. Would you rather have him out of the game?

    This arguments over.

    Next game please.

Off the topic but this is a funny story!!!

    O’Neal calls cops, gets arrested

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Police responded to an anonymous report of “a big ol’ black dude wavin’ a gat around” in the parking lot of Indianapolis’ Club Rio strip club late Friday night to find Indiana Pacers star Jermaine O’Neal literally dancing in circles and gesticulating with a 9 mm handgun.

When officers told O’Neal he would be free to go if he would simply put his registered weapon away, the All-Star power forward fired three rounds into the tires of his own car and continued his frantic movements until he was arrested. Upon examining the Pacer’s vehicle, police discovered a Ziploc bag filled with oregano in the console and a pre-paid cell phone showing a 911 call, suggesting that it was O’Neal himself who alerted authorities to his erratic behavior.

“It’s pretty clear to me that just acting unhappy and saying I don’t like being here is not going to get me traded,” O’Neal told reporters on the courthouse steps after his release on bail.

“When Ste-Jack got popped for firing his gun outside a strip club, he was gone like a month later. I’m hoping that now Larry [Bird] and Donnie [Walsh] will work as hard to move me as they did with Steve. As far as the oregano, I thought some marijuana in the car would seal the deal. Unfortunately, my source doesn’t seem to have been very trustworthy.”

The Pacers’ front office refused to comment on O’Neal’s status with the team, but SSNN’s NBA sources report that the Portland TrailBlazers are suddenly interested in reacquiring the player they originally dealt to Indiana for Dale Davis.

Read my comments carefully. Did I say he should stop shooting??? Did I say he should not be in the game??? The arguments over??? You didn’t even have an argument. Better shot selection would have been what he should have done and if he only shot 10 shots that would have been better because Denver put Kmart their best defender on him and therefore they were weak in defending the laker frontcourt. Sometimes you have to sacrifice your offensive game for the teams sake.

yeah. look at kobe’s numbers in 4th quarter. it should say it all. isn’t then when we want kobe to really step up?

  • Brett

I don’t necessarilly believe kobe had a bad game. And why the hell do people so quickly attack him when he has a poor shooting night. Sure, i agree that he should have gotten inside the paint a bit more, but jump shots are a major part of his game. It always seems to amaze me of the embarrassing accusations made against kobe to try to say he doesn’t make his teammates involved in the game. This is ludacris. And to even compare kobe’s game to lebron’s is obsurd. all you lebron faggs, do us all a favor and go back to cavsnation and take a shaft up your backside, then maybe you’ll finally be pleased… On a better note, when kobe is knocking down those jumpers all game on wednesday, you’ll be praising him and lickin your chops for more. So, please, quit all the complaining, and remember that lakers have won today.

  • sepehr

Everybody needs to realx, we won the game remember?
Kobe wasnt horrible today, but he was a little out of sync with others which happens from time to time, but we tend to notice it more since he usually plays exceptional and its out of character for him.
Even kobe would admit he didnt play his full potential and not well enough:

“I think having Pau in the mix and Lamar playing the way that he’s playing makes it a lot easier where I can have a half where I don’t really score the ball.”

Usually when kobe has a bad game and Phil calls him out like he did tonight, kobe comes out and plays a great game and almost gets a triple double.

One positive from Kobe however was standing up for the team at times, and didnt let denver bully us.

So let’s give Kobe a couple more games before we fully judge him, bottom line is kobe wants to win like all of us.

  • mrbean

just be happy the lakers won… ask yourselves this question, if kobe hadn’t played, would the lakers have won???!!

  • mihaithemiraculous

Kobe didn’t play well in the first half, but that stopped once the second half went under way, yes he played Kmart one on one but thats because he believes he’s not on kobe’s level, and you know what hes right, Kmart lucked out he didn’t have more facial jumpers then what went down, we need to tighten up the D if we want to beat teams past the next round of the playoffs, but bynam might be coming back by then so that would be a quick answer to that problem, sometimes kobe disrupted the offense tonight, but there were countless times when he was being pressed and kicked the ball and the very next pass led to an under the basket dunk or lay up, we can’t be hating on kobe because without him we would not be the 1st seed in the west where we get to play a lack luster defense, hell we wouldnt even have made the playoffs, pau or no pau, every basketball makes bad decisions from time to time, a current example would be a double technical by a lightning quick braided haired midget, so I would give Kobe a little leeway for when he doesn’t play well for a complete game (as i said it was only the first half) his second half was stellar, as he recorded about half the teams freethrows, now do not take it as me being a kobe lover, i’m just stating what i saw.

  • http://www.jamieinsider.com 007

Kobe was a decoy. Thus, he made a bigger impact than people realized. As crappy as Denver’s defense is, they had to pay attention to Kobe – ultimately freed up everyone else (primarily lamar and pau). Having pretty good perimeter shooters doesn’t hurt our game plan either =).

All in all, great game and great win! Go LAKERS!!

  • xtro

They still need to play tough defense, especially transition defense. No D. No Ring.

  • http://myspace.com/brittnay678 Brittnay

Kobe as STD? The only reason guys got their shots was because of Kobe. None of those guys would of had the game they had if Kobe wasn’t playing. He has to take those shots to keep the D honest. So I don’t know were your logic comes from.

  • http://k1k0.com KiKosDad

It’s a dumb mistake by Melo and hopefully he recognize his faults…but what goes outside the court is a personal matter. Heck, so we expect the rapist chants back for our Mamba in Denver now that we have gain the leagues reputation? We built up respect from every road games (with the MVP chants) remember…?

Personally I don’t care (but I do cringe at the idea that some would rather act like a punk). I too will fight anyone who
disrespects my Lakers franchise, it’s just hard to swallow that we’re associated with this kind of attitude. If I let myself be, what’s the difference between me and the raja bell/Suns fans (http://youtube.com/watch?v=7V8ZukXsWmk) or Utah “can’t face the truth” fans?

Kobe for sure wasn’t the STD that game. The game came to Pau so easily because Kobe was there. I saw Kobe set pau up plenty of times as well. And Kobe’s percentage was low because his shots just weren’t falling (at least in my opinion). He was missing shots that he makes all the time. And did you watch the second half?! I would prolly give the STD to fish or vlad for getting into early foul trouble or someone who didn’t play. Not Kobe

  • RoWyN

[Comment ID #33360 Will Be Quoted Here]

I kinda agree with Dingleberry here. I’m not saying Kobe was the only one responsible for the win but a li’l too harsh to give him STD. He may only have 1 assist but don’t forget the pass that led to that assist. Also why the rest of the laker boys were able to pass easily with each other. In the beginning of the game they were double teaming Kobe. The later part, when KMart was guading Kobe, the Nuggets got smaller inside so Lamar and Pau was able to abuse them.

BTW, if you ask me, Pau got that Monster stat night because of Lamar.

  • bryanmn1

So… is Kobe going to be pissed when Pau Gasol receives MVP honors for his play in the Finals?

hey hey, why kobe as the STD? Sure he wasnt hitting his shots, but he got 28 points in the 2nd half and converted most if not all his FT shots.

  • Anonymous.

Also on the people saying kobe shouldnt trash talk, what the fuck are you talking about. Trash talking is a part of the game. It can intimidate or anger players (thus being less productive). Kobe can do w/e the fuck he wants as long as they get the W at the end of the day. It was kobe’s off day that game, so what. People need to stop bandwagoning on who played the best on one given night and then bash them the next night for a bad game. Some fans are f*cking ridiculous.

THIS IS THE PLAYOFF NOT REGULAR SEASON.

  • heffajoint

As Rodney King said, “Can’t we all just get along…”

Guys, we won the game! Stop arguing amongst each other! We should be supporting our team, not bashing them or each other. Yes, Kobe had a bad game, but he’ll bounce back and be fine. I’m sure no one here is suggesting Kobe sit out the rest of the playoffs. And, I do agree that he did things that got other players open and his “D” kept AI from going bonkers too, so let it go. I’m just happy other players stepped up where in the past if Kobe had a bad offensive night we’d be done. So be happy and let’s do it again in game 2! I’m sure Kobe will have a better shooting night.

As for the trash talk… It happens. Plus, it’s the playoffs. I kind of expect that to happen. And besides, it looked to me like Kenyon Martin started the trash talk first. If anything, that’ll probably motivate Kobe to play better.

And about the crowd chanting “D.U.I.” Hey, as long as the crowd gets the Nuggets or Carmelo to not focus on basketball it’s cool with me. That’s what a home crowd is supposed to do. You think when we get to Denver the crowd won’t be screaming things out about Kobe’s rape case? That’s just how it is. If players don’t want to have things like that chanted out in games then obey the law and don’t do stupid things.

+/- is what the team does when your out on the court. Kobe had a +3 so the team scored 3 more points than they allowed. Fish was a +29 so when he was out on the court the lakers scored 29 more points than allowed.

because he does so much for the lakers even when his fg % is down. you can not honestly say that kb’s 9-26 32 pts and providing open shots because of the double teams he gets is worse than Fish’s 1-5 3 pts and never gets gets a double team?

  • ab4sure

[Comment ID #33549 Will Be Quoted Here]

Sometimes less is more. Twenty-six shots was too much because he was being contested by Kmart and he was getting tough looks at the basket. Also kobe only had one assist and 3 reb. The lakers did best when they pounded it inside. Fish only shot 5 times, maybe if he was 2-10 or 3-15. He pounded inside which was to the laker advantage and is why he had a plus +29. Fish also had four assist and 3 rebounds while playing less than kobe. Kobe is allowed to have an std. He is not immune.

[Comment ID #33557 Will Be Quoted Here]

what do you mean i dont prove it? I showed you how valuable kb was during the game. that fg% dont mean sht as long as your pts exceed shot attempts. with your logic of the +/- ratio, lets say when kb sits and the rest of the lakers are on a hot streak and the nuggets go cold for no reason. how does that make anysense that kb is the std. with your logic kwame brown which has a higher fg% should shoot more than kb… which proves my point that you cannot go off fg% you have to look at the production of the player. 32 pts on 26 shots is a decent night. 3 pts on 5 shots is not and is more deserving of the std than kb. kb must take jumpers to keep the defense honest and to keep double team coming. even if his shot doesnt fall like what happened in the first half he must keep taking them for the sucess of the lakers…

  • ab4sure

[Comment ID #33577 Will Be Quoted Here]

How valuable was kobe last game??? He got 32 points… subtract 4 pts for technical foul shots and you got only 28. That is not an efficient game. Look at gasol. 36 points on 20 shots… Walton … 16pts. on 8 shots… that is efficient which kobe wasn’t… kobe missed 17 shots and the shots weren’t from being double team… Kmart played good D.. if he was double teamed he would have many more assists than just one… and why didn’t he have more rebs than 3. Fish was smart enough not to shoot too many shots and he ended up with 4 assists and three rebs. playing less… he helped the offense run and therefore he had a +29… and all other starters had +20 or more. Production doesn’t mean you performed good… You can make alot of cars but end up going out of business because it cost you too much to make… Kobe ate up alot of possesions and produced at a low rate.. not as well as every other laker.. therefore he got the std… Allow the fact that kobe can get the std and have a bad game… it will make you seem more objective. The laker success isn’t determined on how many jumpers kobe takes… remember last year.. it is determined on getting the best percentage shot for the team.

  • DingleBerry

what Steve no post this after game 2? you want to make kb std again. The funny thing is his shooting % was much higher but as far as effectiveness he was as equal in game 1. lakers dominated both games with kb as the leader….
