HOOPSWORLD.COM: The first few days of the free agency period have passed and Los Angeles Laker fans are wondering where is Kevin Garnett?
LA has been Garnett’s “fantasy” destination for years. Ask the diehard fan and they say it’s inevitable, Garnett WILL be a Laker.
The reality is Garnett is on the Minnesota Timberwolves and may never play in LA except as a visitor, but that’s such a killjoy . . . forget about that for the moment.
Recently it looked like LA actually had a shot after team owner Dr. Jerry Buss spoke with Wolves owner Glen Taylor. While a dialogue was established, the draft passed without a deal.
A wild four-way trade was broached with Jermaine O’Neal, Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum, Al Jefferson, Garnett and various picks swapped between the Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers, Wolves and Lakers.
Apparently the Celtics were reticent to trade away their promising young forward in Jefferson for the expensive and oft-injured O’Neal.
It’s no surprise the talks collapsed under their own weight. To expect three executives (who happen to be ex-Celtics) to gift-wrap the former league MVP in Garnett to the Lakers is probably too much to ask.
Still, summer fantasies are a lot more fun than harsh realities . . . here’s one to chew on for a few days.
