Fox Sports: Phil Jackson has just announced that he’ll make public within the next four weeks his decision whether or not to re-sign with the Lakers (his current contract expires after this season).

Let me preface the following by saying that, although Phil is a good friend of long-standing, I’ve had no advance word from him as to what his intentions are, and that my opinions are just that — my opinions.

That said, here are what I believe to be the pros and cons that might influence his decision.

Why he will return…

*During his last year of unemployment, Phil was at first convinced that he’d never coach in the NBA again. In lieu of that, he busied himself with writing a book (The Last Season: A Team in Search of Its Soul), giving motivational speeches to various groupings of CEOs, and traveling (specifically to Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti). None of these activities was as satisfying as coaching.

*His girlfriend, Jeannie Buss, lives down the street.

*He understands his mere presence on the bench is a considerable factor in maintaining the overall value of the franchise. He sees this as a continuing obligation to Jeannie.

Ya know, if I were PJ, I’d just leave, because he has a bad hip, theonly person I could trust would be Kobe, and the rest would just be players on the team! I’d be furious, I’d be stressed out, I’d pull my hair out, I just wouldn’t take it sitting down, I’d just QUIT!!!!!!!!!!

PJ is looking at this from a bigger standpoint than what’s being discussed. Jeanie brings a very, no, extremely important role to the picture. She’s the daughter of the owner. Yes, we already know that… however, its a fairly EASY argument to make that PJ is the most knowledgable basketball mind in the organization. (I’m not going to say that’s true, but the argument could certainly be made).

    What’s this mean?

This means that if Phil is willing to stick it out, the day *might* come where PJ winds up like Magic as partial owner or some type of ownership stake. It could be through marriage or just through Jeanie, I don’t know – he would certainly have to become legitimate family. That could be very appealing and could outweigh the pros and cons discussed in this article. I know its a bit of a stretch that this could enter into the picture, but I don’t feel it’s that much of a stretch by anyone’s imagination.

My money is that unless this team absolutely falls flat on its ass in these next four weeks, PJ will be signing an extension. Anything else DOES make him a lame-duck and I don’t think anyone wants that.

    As usual very good comment.

I agree, there is a very big picture to look at. Success, or a very clear chance of success could help PJ want to stay or say, “what the heck” its time to move on.

Like you I’m optimistic on Jackson staying. With the additions of Fisher and Mihm, the improvements of several key players like Ronny, Bynum, Farmar, and the hope of a healthy team, the Lakers could become a very good team. 4-8 weeks of winning and the prospect of getting better, could go a long ways to improving the outlook of not only PJ, but Kobe and a few of us bloggers as well.
