Currently at 13-15, can the Lakers still make the playoffs?
Garrett Garcia // @GarrettGarcia: Eh. No, I’m going to lean towards no. Currently under .500, missing four of their best five players, the Lakers can MAYBE crawl into the eighth seed but even then, a first round sweep is likely imminent.
Oren Levy // @LakersOren: No. Barring a franchise altering trade, this season is over. The Lakers executed their plan to hang around .500 until Kobe returned (10-9) and kick it up a notch upon his arrival, but Kobe’s latest injury (out at least six weeks) effectively ends their season.
Johnny Navarrette // @JohnnyNav: Yes but it’s going to be tough. The Lakers are just 2.5 games out of the 8th seed but also just three games from having the 8th worst record in the NBA. January is going to be the deciding factor on the Lakers playoff hopes. 15 games with 10 of those coming on the road, this includes the Grammy road trip of 7 straight road games and 3 back to backs.
Jory Dreher // @Jay_Laker: I think there is too much time like in the season to write them off so quickly, however it’s going to be a lot tougher for them this season than last. It’s going to take the perfect storm and Kobe is going to have to be Kobe.
Belal Abdelfattah // @ItsBelal_A: Let’s be real here, this Laker squad has greatly overachieved so far this season. With Kobe out another six weeks and the rest of the West finding their grooves, this team is going to take some hits. They can compete with almost anyone at home, but consistently struggling on the road is going to eventually catch up with this team. Let’s all just pray this season ends in a top ten draft pick.
Anna Gonda // @AnnaLBG: In the beginning of the season, I said they would, no problem. Unfortunately, it’s starting to look a little bleak now. They’ve still got 50+ games to go, so if they can wiln at least 2/3 of those games, they’d be in good shape to make the post-season.
Ashkan Kargaran // @aakargaran: No, no, no, no and no. Why would anyone want this team to make the postseason anyway? To get swept by San Antonio or OKC? No thanks. The Lakers need to rest Kobe for the season and hope they finish with a bottom-5 record in the NBA and get a nice young player in the draft to go forward with. This is a new NBA with new rules in place to prevent the Lakers from acquiring big name players out of nowhere.
Robert Benitez // @beeb0: The Lakers are only 2.5 games behind the 8th seed, but in the very crowded Western Conference, that’s going to be very difficult to reach. The Laker fan in me says yes, but the realist in me says we go fishing early this year.
Melvin Taylor // @MelvinTaylorII: In the East? Definitely. In the West, only if a blockbuster trade is made so no. This Lakers team has played well so far but in order to make it to the playoffs they would have to play defense, consistently. That is something that has not, and won’t, happen this year. If they can make it to .500 I believe they could make a nice run at it and could even have a long shot if Dallas or Phoenix cool off but more than likely no.
