SportingNews.com on KG’s situation

Found this from a new SportingNews.com article. The writer talks about how “optimism is killing big trades.” None the less, he writes on Garnett first:

SportingNews.com: Here’s the latest from front-office sources on the max-contract guys who have been rumored to be on the block.

Kevin Garnett, Timberwolves. There’s no question that, last month, the Timberwolves were as open as they’ve ever been to trading Garnett. But here’s the problem in Minnesota — owner Glen Taylor is a nice guy and an incurable optimist. (That’s why Kevin McHale still has a job.) Garnett is loyal and has not pushed for a trade. He’s one of the rare players who feels a responsibility for cleaning up the team’s current mess, not looking for the “trade-me” cop-out. Adding a wrinkle is Garnett’s enormous, $20 million contract. “They should make a deal,” says one league source. “It would be good for everyone. But Glen is always going to look at the roster and think he has a chance, even if he doesn’t, even if it is obvious they need to rebuild. So there’s never going to be a mindset of, ‘We have to trade Kevin.’ “

FUCK GLEN TAYLOR, I HATE DAT JACKASS
HE JUST NEEDS TO SEND K.G. TO THE LAKERS ALREADY

  • laker2421

All this time I thought Kevin McHale was the biggest JACKASS in Minny now I realize he’s third behind Glen Taylor and KG. Stop being a bitch and demand a trade! Do not worry KG people won’t talk bad about you if you ask to be dealt because everyone in the world thinks you should have asked a long time ago to be let out of morbid Minny, come to Hollywood where all your dreams can come true.

I think we are misreading Glen Taylor’s remarks:

“I talked to K.G. about it; I said, ‘You’re going to hear a lot of (rumors) stuff, but I’ll call you if something really happens.’ I just asked him (about a trade), and he’d say, ‘No, I haven’t changed my mind.’

‘No, I haven’t changed my mind.’ This sentence is the heart of the conversation between Taylor and KG, “changed mind on what???” KG has not changed his mind on getting traded to Celtics or Warriors. Because those were the only 2 destination offered to KG. We all know he doesn’t want to go to Boston or Oakland. He has 2 cities on his mind: Phoenix and LA.

Phoenix didn’t want to swap Amare for KG and they had their financial reservations, so that deal was off the table. McHale being the Laker’s nemesis, never really considered a trade to the Lakers. So, they really didn’t give KG the LA option.

McHale had Boston as the primary destination for KG for 2 reasons:
1-He bleeds Celtics “green” as long as he lives. Why? Just go to Wikipedia and read his Basketball biography and you understand why he loves Celtics and hates lakers.
2-McHale would rather send KG to Eastern Conference.

This is only my personal take and I think the answer “No, I haven’t changed my mind.” by KG was answering the question: Have you changed your mind on Celtics or Warriors?

Also, This sentence makes me think too: “I talked to K.G. about it; I said, ‘You’re going to hear a lot of (rumors) stuff, but I’ll call you if something really happens.”

“‘You’re going to hear…..” there is another mystery because “going to” is announcing something happening in future!!! Why would Taylor use the word “going to..”? because he is still planning a trade and there will be rumors. “I’ll call you…..” another act to happen in future.

Finally, we know there are only 3 options for Wolves:
1-Keep him this season and let him just opt out and get nothing in return except a $22.-Mil cap relieve. That would be stupid by any measure.
2-Keep him this season and give him an extension for another 3-4 years. Do wolves want to have a $20.-Mil plus aging player in the roster for a few more years? I think this one is the least probable option. I shouldn’t even mention this one.
3-Trade KG. This is the only option that makes sense and most GMs, experts and sportswriters have been predicting and it will happen and the only logical destination for KG is LA. And if it wasn’t for McHale resisting KG to LA, we would have already had him.

DON’T GIVE UP JUST YET. This article is concluding what they want to hear and what fans want to read. Do yourself a favor and read just the Taylor’s statement without reading the writers input and you will see what I mean.

all i can say is if KG wants to come to LA then let him get off of his ass and tell the front office to trade me to the LOS ANGELES LAKERS, loyalty smoyalty his been there all his life and its a dead end street, so like i said every one wants KG to come to LA, but does KG himself want LA?
    GO LAKERS!!!

  • davidle7777

Accpet it guys…KG will NOT become a laker this season…Glen Taylor said “There are trades being considered but KG’s name will not be out there” Might as well..shut this site down…because it will not happen. If Jerry West said to the media…”We will not trade Kobe Bryant…kobe’s not gettin traded…if the Wolves OWNER say’s we’re not trading Garnett…than they are NOT trading garnett…come on guys…this is coming straight out of the owners mouth…the dude pays major money for these players. We all have to think this is a business…They dont make trades to lose money…In order to stay in business you have to make money and that means keeping Garnett. Im sure the Minnesota franchise is doing what is best in the eyes of the organization and in the eyes of the minnesota fans. Not to make us Laker Fans happy. Thats the last thing they worry about…Its a waiste of time thinking we should come up with different trade scenarios…for example….Gasol…There are no news that he is getting traded anytime soon…but yet people here come up with the funniest pipe dreams…I dont get it…when it comes down to it…we can talk all we want about who we want…but in reality the choice is not ours to make…we dont have any insight on where anyone should go or not go…its really up to the man that pay’s these ball players the money…in each organization. Day and night i’ve hoped for a change in the Lakers Organization but havent yet seen a dramatic change..I mean its great getting back deep fish…but I dont think that makes Kobe as happy…and if Kobe’s not happy WE laker fan’s aren’t happy as well….

  • Another_LAL_Fan

Great point up there Cyrus. That sentence ‘No, I haven’t changed my mind.’ may not be about KG saying ‘I want to stay here with the Wolves’ as the writer presume!
And, even if KG force a trade, we all know that he’ll not do this on public. He’s not that type of guy. That sayd, maybe he’d already sayd McHale that he want out, and McHale is just crazy about trying to find some other deal. The guy hate LA and he would never come and say ‘well… KG want out and, so far, LA may be the only way’…

Realy good post CYRUS… I back you up on this 100%!

Like Cyrus, I relooked at the article. Its just jibberish and makes no sense. Even with the writer trying to connect the phrases, it still doesn’t make any sense.

Although he states the interview happened on monday, some of it seems old. It also wasn’t really an interview, more of a discombobulated statement.

A clear and convincing statement would have been in order for something as important as that.

It looks more like a Ric Bucher made up patchwork story than anything else. Poorly written at least. The headline looks fabricated to look more substantial than the story would even indicate.

Thanks Cyrus for bringing this to our attention.

Anyone can make up trades that work financially. But that does not mean the could ever actually happen. Both teams have to agree to it. That means that both teams must at least think they are getting something out of the trade.

    davidle7777,

“Accpet it guys…KG will NOT become a laker this season”

Absolutely, you could be right and it might not happen.
But still the twenty million dollar question is not answered.
What are they gonna do with KG? They will wait for him to opt out? Give him an extension?
Wouldn’t a trade (this summer) be the smart thing to do?

Where does KG wants to go to? Phoenix? LA? Boston? Oakland? Which one is the most logical destination?
Or KG wants to retire in Minn.?
Maybe I am the optimist between the two of us and maybe you’re the more logical thinker.

Welcome Fatty, I always trust your judgment and I am glad you have the same take.

Also, this sentence makes me think: “I said, ‘We’re probably going to bring in (top draft pick Corey) Brewer with one more young guy, so you’ve got young guys, and you’re going to have a younger team.’ And he said, ‘I don’t think I mind playing with those guys.”

“I don’t think I mind playing with those guys.” This is a very reluctant guy speaking. “I don’t think I mind…”. There is absolutely no sign of enthusiasm in that line. It sounded like they asked him: If you don’t want to get traded to Boston or Oakland you have to play with these young players. Doesn’t it????

  • Fatty

    Cyrus

The phrases just don’t connect. Its like a statement was purposely taken out of context to prove some kind of point.

Its like the source of the statement Taylor, can say later, I really didn’t mean that, that was his opinion. He purposely was vague. I’ve seen Taylor interviewed before, where he was very direct and forthcoming. I actually admire him for being that way, unlike other owners that are evasive and purposely mislead.

This time, I don’t know how to read this. Its like a jigsaw puzzle that not only is missing some pieces, but some other box of pieces got mixed in as well.

Either way, I don’t like any of this stuff being released today. We seem to be the only one still offering good stuff in a trade left. But our friends in Minnie can’t agree on how to deal with us.

  • LAalltheway

That’s true, Cyrus. Garnett doesn’t seem the type to be like, “Yeah, I wouldn’t mind playing with those guys. They look like they’ll be pretty good. This season might not be so bad after all.” I thought this whole time everyone was saying that Garnett wants to win, and wants to win now. Now they’re just trying to cover their tracks, or increase KG’s value. How the hell is Taylor trying to say now that they never sought out a Garnett trade? Sorry Glen, we’re all on to you. For whatever your motives are, you’re full of shit.

  • tryangles

When you look at Glenn Taylor and Jerry Buss you see the biggest difference between a sentimental basketball team owner and a realist business man.

I’m telling you man…I don’t like any of this either. LA has been the most solid trade scenario for KG for quite some time now, but hardly anybody has been willing to even give us a chance. I don’t know what’s going on, or how deep their hatred for the Lakers really is, but there are some forces here working against us. I guess the only thing for us to do is grind it out, and let all the bullshit slip by. I still believe that they have to trade KG, and that we have the upper hand.

  • davidle7777

Bottom line is this….KG will only become a Laker…if he told Glen Taylor…I want out of Minnesota…simple as that..Obviously, KG is as big of name as KB for whatever organization. But this is really up to him…If you want KG….sign up for http://www.kevingarnett.com…and write him…its free to sign up…and trust me, we will be heard by KG himself…there are a bunch of post’s there from LA fans….telling KG we need you….and some questions he himself has answered back to the fans…this is the first start…if we all came together maybe it will get inside KG’s head….and he will become a Laker…if not this year then definitely next year….

  • Cyrus

    Fatty,

I agree, I surely have my reservations about this article. As you might have noticed, I haven’t been posting for few days; simply because I really didn’t have anything to say. I read this Taylor so called interview and I couldn’t remain silent anymore. I saw it just to be another marketing tool for Taylor and McHale. It’s nothing but bunch of quotes patched together and spiced to revive KG trade discussions.

  • LAalltheway

    From one of yesterday’s posts:

Rome: Is Minnesota going to move Garnett?

Stein: That’s still the word I get. One exec, whom I trust implicitly, said “I know for a fact that MIN still wants to move KG before the season starts.” They really wanted to do it before the draft. Wanted Noah badly. Likelihood is that they do something…because how do you bring Garnett at this point? …KG finally does want to leave now, even though he won’t ever come out and say it … his trust in management has eroded …Taylor/McHale will be back and KG won’t want to work with them anymore

So Stein says that a reliable source tells him that the T-Wolves still need to move KG, and that he does want to leave, especially now that Taylor and McHale have been shopping him around. Doesn’t it seem more plausible, with all that’s been going on lately, that this is the correct info, and Taylor is trying his best to still get the most out of KG in a trade, or cover his ass should a favorable deal not come through, and hopefully appease a disgruntled Garnett?

  • Cyrus

If we just forget about this Taylor interview for the sake of optimism and assume that a KG trade will take place, there are couple of dates to be aware of:

    1-August 3,
I assume, McHale may ask for Javaris Crittenton to be included in the trade package. We know there is a 30-days mandatory period before Lakers could trade him, he was signed on July 3.

    2-August 6,
We know for sure that McHale will ask for Brandan Wright in a GSW trade and he was signed on July 6.

Still feel we are in it, but I have to admit I’m less optimistic than I was yesterday. My take is if KG IS traded he goes to the Lakers. We are in a better position with pieces and a willingness to take on KG’s huge contract. Add to that KG wants to come to the Lakers, puts us in the top of the running.

    Fatty,

The hatred will not go away as long as LA-Times has something against Kobe and Lakers. I looked there too, It’s all about the 2 haters and what the have to say and they’re ruling the blog. A few times I was tempted to post, but than I thought why would I want to be among haters.

There was a time, maybe better part of last 2 weeks, AK/BK erased some of the haters posts, it didn’t last long and because they didn’t have the usual 200-300 comments, now they have nothing against Kobe bashing but they would mind personal attacks.

I still think that the K-Bros like to keep the controversy going, it keeps their blog looking full of responses and better for their business.

The other thing that bothers me is they way all of them suck up to K-Bors. I like them and I think they are intelligent people but I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to tell’em what I think.

Also, some of the usual bloggers think very highly of themselves and they think they know it all. I feel it the way they response to each other. Alway form the above.

yea the lakers were great before kobe, with kobe but they won’t be great after if we trade him look into history at every superstar traded look at the teams records and you will find it very unpleasant. we are still recovering from shaq then we trade kobe it will take us 1 maybe two decades to recover.

Man, these are tough times for us lakr fans. I battle kobe haters everyday at work and on the streets. Even cats that love the lakers bash young Kobe. It kills because people forget so easily how good this guy is. I went back and watched some of the glory days of him and shaq in the playoffs. Kobe was killin the western conference teams, he was relentelss. I defintley think that he could’ve handled the situation differently, but on the other hand the Lakers orginizaton is a multi million corporation makeing money of his talent for the last three years without surrounding him with talent. I also think we put too mych stock in Lamar Odom, even though he’s one of my favorite players. I hope if and when he is traded he flourishes whereever he goes. Bottom line is we need some consistent talent around Kobe to compete and obviously KG would be the best compliment

    Taylor

“I told Kevin, alot of young guys are coming in (which means, were rebuilding and will lose almost every night)and Kevin says he his fine with that(He say’s KG loves to lose) he loves to teach young guys” (Makes sense, a 22 million coach on the floor)

Because Taylor is lying, we are forced to read between the lines. The team is totally rebuilding. Young guys are coming in, no vets to help make Minnie a winner, just rookies which will help make T Wolves a winner in several years.

The biggest piece to rebuild logically would be trading KG. So let’s get this straight. T Wolves is blowing up the team and replacing all with younger guys. But KG is staying to teach these young guys the NBA game and waste his prime to be a coach? Doesn’t make sense does it, because its not true.

Taylor wants young guys and expiring contracts. He’s just postering to get more in an offer. He’s acting like he’s prepared to keep KG for another year and have KG opt out. KG opting out would be Minnie suicide. All they get is 22 mil off the books. Sounds like a lot, right? No. There current team salary is 72 mil, 4 mil in lux tax penalties. Subtract 22 mil, you get 50 mil. With the current cap that would get them one quality player. Just one, not even the quality of a Rashard Lewis. Not too good for a star player in the end, is it?

All the teams trying to trade with Minnie know this well. Taylor thinks he’s cute and clever, but everyone involved knows what he’s doing.

KG’s greatest value in trade was just before draft night. This is no exageration. Each day he his not traded his value is going down. Why? Simply, the teams that wanted him initially have become few. Each team has been making other deals and the pool of teams has fallen to maybe a couple, and those teams won’t wait much longer. They have to strengthen themselves while other deals are able to be made.

Although the trade deadline is in Feb. most teams will not do a major trade late in the season.

Is it GS or is the Lakers? Both teams will have to involve a third team.

Golden State has a major problem. Harrington = 4 years and 45 mil. Minnie absolutely, positively will not take on that bad of a contract for such a one demensional player. GS also has no expiring contracts to offer.

Lakers has less than a major problem. Odom = 2 years and 13.5 mil per year
Kwame 9 mil and expiring contract

GS would need a third team to take on Harrington and send young talent, expirng contracts, to Minnie. Very unlikely.

Lakers would need a third team to take Odom and send players to Minnie. Much more likely. Larry Brown said “Odom is one of the most desired players in the NBA by coaches”

GS promises Wright, an NBA hopeful. Not the player Minnie wanted.

Lakers promising Bynum. A top center hopeful, GM’s coveting. Who would you rather have?

Lakers are still the front runner. But can’t wait forever. Aug 3rd is a very interesting date to put on your calendars, when Critt can be traded.

    and yet there’s more….

    Current salary cap 55 mil

Freeing KG’s salary would give Minni 5 mil to sign a FA, that’s all 5 mil.

Do you see why they must trade him, sooner rather than later.

Fatty You Believe A Trade Will Happen By Aug 3?

    J-Cool

If Critt is important to trade for KG, then Aug 3 is key. The Lakers signed Critt on July 3rd and the rules say you can’t trade a signed drafted player for 30 days. That’s about two weeks away. Of course the Lakers and Minnie would have a verbal agreement by then if they were to trade.

KG likes the idea of a teaching role. That is why he wants to stay in Minnesota, to help develop their young talent.

    Heres the Link:

I don’t know maybe Minnesota will get lucky next year and get a top three draft pick. They could then get Mayo or Rose to play PG. Then by the time Garnett is 35 they will have a good young team with a really old Garnett.

I sense a lot of confusion on the blog regarding the Salary cap and the “so called” lux cap. They are two different things and not the same.I got this info from Larry Coon’s CBA explanation at realgm.com and thought I would share.

First the Salary Cap. The NBA set the Salary Cap at 55 million.

Teams under the salary cap can do whatever they want to do. They have no restrictions in making trades, signing Free Agents, etc… as long as they don’t exceed the established Salary Cap.

Teams over the Salary Cap are severely limited. The NBA will let teams sign Free Agents but only using exceptions.

The MLE = 5.3 mil (Signed Dfish for 4.3, so we have 1 mil left)
The BLE = 1.8 mil (every other year)
    The vet minimum = 1.1

Teams can resign there own players without these exceptions.
Bird rule. If a player has been with his team for 3 consecutive years they can sign him for whatever they want. (Ex. Luke was resigned using this rule) Mihm qualifies for bird rule.

Teams can trade if over the Salary Cap but the salaries must match (a match is within 25% of actual salaries)

“Lux Cap” (the salary and lux cap are not the same)Once a combined teams salary exceeds the Lux Threshold they pay a penalty to the NBA. The threshold this year was set at 68 mil. A dollar for dollar tax. (Ex. if teams salary is 78 mil, they pay 10 mil) The lux cap holds no restrictions to a team, except for the ability to pay the tax.

    So a quick review.

Under Salary Cap: No rules for trades or signings
    Over Salary Cap: Strict rules
Lux cap: Is when you pay tax penalties

Understanding these basic rules will help each of us in our trade scenarios. This is just an overview.
