Spike Lee Discusses Kobe Bryant’s Documentary “Kobe Doing Work”

Spike Lee recently sat down and discussed his upcoming documentary on Kobe Bryant:

SportsRadioInterviews: On how much coverage he got from the Lakers organization, Kobe and Phil Jackson:

“Oh we had complete access. We had thirty cameras. Kobe wore a mic. And Phil Jackson allowed us to bring a camera into the locker room before the game, halftime, and after the game. Phil Jackson never does that.”

On how much editing the Lakers or the NBA did demanded?

“There was not any change suggested. And also, the method of broadcast, when it comes out on the DVD that’s out on Tuesday – it will be uncensored so there’s a lot of language. You really get a feel for what these guys are saying out there. And they’re not mincing words either.”

Excellent, I’ve always wanted to listen in on some of the NBA’s great trash talkers and I’d imagine Kobe’s right up there with the best of them.

Again, before the Memphis game I wrote that I think Kobe at times takes way too many shots and hogs the ball. I got some people cussing me out and stuff but they are just one minded idiots.
I will say that these stats can be deceiving because many times Kobe takes the bulk of his shots when the Lakers are already trailing so they were going to lose anyway even if he shot 18 times instead of 28. But at the same time there are games like Utah where Kobe took 8+ shots in the last 5 minutes of a very close game. He hit like one or two of them and then kept missing. He did not even look to pass the ball. Against Denver he took almost 10 shots in the first quarter (fade aways, double teams…) for no reason and quickly took the other players out of the game. Let me address two more things
    1) Some idiot said in my other post about Kobe being a hog that I am only hating because the Lakers lost. Not true; against Phoenix, I think Kobe played great and needed to do what he did.
    2) People say “what do you expect Kobe to do when all the players aren’t scoring or playing well…” my answer is what do you expect all the other players to do when Kobe is taking dumb shots and not looking to pass…..

p.s. before all you biased Kobe lovers write some dumb response on how he is the best player in the NBA think about it for a minute. Look on the east coast and see what Lebron and Wade are doing!

  • rawnnn

Yoni, what do you expect laker fans/kobe fans to respond to you? Here’s my answer to your of what I expect the other players to do when kobe is taking dumb shots and not looking to pass? I expect them to fuccin rebound!

if they KNOW..Kobe’s about to take over the game…they need to stop watching him and start team rebounding…only player that knows that is LO………everybody else is lollie-gagging spectating like lil bastards…i have no idea but yeah………wutevers…y’all are lame.

  • lakers4lyfe

^ hahahahahahahahaa…that cracked me up. “yall are lame” lol…that was random.

If you want an unbiased opinion, take this into account. When Kobe scored 81 points, and even 61 points against New York this season, how did you feel? I’m sure you, like all of us, you were ecstatic – but with every good, comes the bad.

For every astonishing thing an athlete does, there’s always going to be a game where things sag off. Not even your vaunted “East Coast players” in Lebron James and Dwayne Wade come close to what Kobe is capable of as a basketball player. Who gives a flying f*ck about them when we (Lakers) have THE BEST team in the league right now. It’s amazing that a fan like yourself is even comparing Kobes flaws to the brilliance of the East-coast players like Dwayne Wade (who leads a team barely over .500), Dwight Howard (who leads a team that consistently chokes during the post-season), and Lebron james, a brilliant player, but hasn’t had a good game against the Lakers on the big stage, can’t hit a free throw nor does he have a consistent jump-shot.

When Kobe is on, he is on and there is no one stopping us. Don’t believe me, then ask Dwight Howard when he got posterized by Kobe during his rookie year. Ask Lebron when Kobe’s rainbow shots embarassed James’ defense this year. Remember Game 7 against the suns a few years back? If so,then stop complaining.

Kobe is the most complete 2-gaurd the league has ever seen. His shot selection is justified.

You have to live and die with he best of what you have.

when is the DVD suppose to come out? this says Tuesday but i looked it up and it says May 19th so idk

YONI is a 12 yr old lil faggot does not know anything about…the only thing that this guy takes into account is what he sees on ESPN….the LeBron’s the D-Wades the Dwights

KOBE will be KOBE there’s no stopping him….he’ll take 45-50 shots if he has too, he’ll score 35 pts a game if he has too…if that’s what it takes too win that what he’ll do. Doesnt mean that they’ll win the game. That’s his approach to the game. That’s why he’s the cold-blooded assasin he just doesnt care.

    jay, yr an idiot.

kobe is undoubtedly great, the best in the game right now.
but to battle jordan for best all time, he does need to learn when his heat check has told that he is no longer on fire. especially with 5 or 6 minutes left in a 5 point or less game, it’s not smart to miss two shots in a row that turns into points for the other team and then continue shooting, without looking to draw a double team(which will always come) and then pass out, or get his other teammates involved once the lead is cut down with his heroics.

lebron and wade have nothing on kobe.

but saying this does not mean you think kobe isn’t great.

    but kobe ain’t perfect.
this cost us the game in utah and phoenix.

but on the other side, if you are going to live with how many times kobe wins us the game, maybe we do have to live with kobe 2 or 3 games out of a season costing us a game. i think i’d live with that.

and that word faggot should be screened out just like sh!t or fcuk is.

You have to live and die with he best of what you have.

    - first off Kobe is great and there is no doubting that. i loved the games where he scored 61 and 81, but there are games when he is just not on but he continues to shoot (i.e. utah right b4 the all star break). he has to learn to PASS when he is OFF. secondly, you said that wade has barely lead his team to .500, they have more than 15 wins from last year with a team that sucks (no gasol, odom, and half a season of bynum). you said that dwight chokes in the playoffs every year (he’s been in the league how long?) and actually last year they over achieved. please compare lebrons cast to kobes (50 year old ilgauskas? washed out b. wallace? delonte west?) besides for mo williams lebron has no one.
In responsed to the other 2 homos (lakers4lyfe and faggot jay) who wrote back like idiots, there isn’t much to say. they are just dumb ppl who only watch the lakers (which is fine) but keep ur stupid one sided, biased opinions to yourselves.
btw jay u r truly dumb. u tell me that i only listen to espn when espn suks kobes dik all day, i actually have watched all 3 of those players u mentioned play 25+ times this year. when has kobe ever lead a team? ever? come on jay i am listening?
shaq = 3 championships. not kobe
last year was with gasol and odom, 2 great players.
d wade = lead his team to one ring
lebron = beat a detroit team that kobe singlehandedly attempted to also do but obviously failed bc he couldnt pass. lebron did it by himself. So jay unless u have something intelligent to say plz shut ur mouth!

  • alex

Yoni your the dumb one. Kobe made shots for the lakers to win the game when it counted. Shaq didn’t do all the work, he had help from Kobe too. Dwayne didn’t lead his team to win that one ring, Shaq did. Look at Dwayne now, hes like under .500 without Shaq? Lebron beat Detroit, but did he beat Kobe this season? Didn’t think so.

  • imfasterthanur

    Yoni,

That is the most biased comment I’ve ever heard.

    1. Dwayne Wade = championship by himself?

Did you forget that Shaquille O’neal was on that team? The same Shaq that “won 3 championships, and not Kobe”. Now that Shaq is gone, what the heck is Wade doing? Not only does the Eastern Conference have perennially weaker team-records every year (justifying why Lebron even made it to the finals a few years back), but it’s not hard to have “15 more wins” when The Miami Heat were one of the WORST teams last year.

    2. You wanna talk about supporting cast? Even when Kobe had a terrible supporting cast, he still carried the lakers to the first round and even almost upset the #1 Seed (The Suns) single-handedly that year. You say that Gasol and Odom are great players. They are very good, but they were the focal point of our disastrous finals performance last year For that context, I would have loved to have “50 year Ilgauskas”, a washed up Ben Wallace, or even a Delonte West over Vujacic would got bi*tched by Ray Allen, A Lamar Odom who was scared of Kevin garnett, or a Pau Gasol who got dominated in the paint by Kendrick Perkins AND Leon Powe during the finals. Lamar odom was a mental case and Pau Gasol played ridiculously soft – so a supporting case argument is obsolete.

    3. Lebron James beat the Detroit Pistons team that Kobe lost to?

First of all, the Pistons were no longer under the radar that year, so they no longer could sneak up and steal a 7 game series, making them easier to strategize and be focused against. But, if you wanna make that argument, then that same year the Spurs DOMINATED Lebron James in the Finals, exploiting his terrible perimeter game — the same team that Kobe SINGLE-HANDEDLY defeated LAST year — A team that was supposed to be the Western Conferences’ toughest defense.

I’m sorry, my laker brother, I understand that Kobe still has a few mental aspects to work on (E.G. giving the ball up a bit more, and trusting his teammates) but who doesn’t?

Dwayne Wade is injury prone, gambles a lot on defense and is undersized when playing against someone in the post. Lebron James does not have a consistent jump-shot, is a 70% free throw shooter, and is light-years away from Kobe’s “Black Mamba” mentality. He can not handle the amount of pressure that Kobe deals with on a daily basis.

To be fair, I admit that Lebron is more powerful and unstoppable in the paint, and Dwayne Wade is a bit faster and more agile than the two, but Kobe has THE complete package, going from physical tools to and ice-cold killer mentality when it matters.

There is no argument you can make to make me think otherwise. I am not being stubborn, these are legitimate facts and the best we can do is agree to disagree. Lebron and Wade are great, but Kobe is still in a tier of his own.

    Oh and lastly,

    4. How many championships did Shaq win before he came to L.A and was paired off with kobe Bryant? — I’ll help you, ZERO.

Without Kobe Shaq would have been double and triple teamed and dished it out to who? Mark Madsen? a 30 year old Robert Horry? Ron Harper? They were a DUO for a reason, they fed off of each other so for you to claim that Kobe was not an equal leader to Shaq’s behalf would make you a naive person.

You can have your opinion, that’s fine, but you have to agree to disagree with us on this on.

  • Yoni

i agree to disagree. i have no problem with that. i dont like ppl like jay and the other dude calling me a faggot and retard. wade was injured last year that is why he is under .500. kobe had odom that year and suns were not the # 1 seed.
all i was saying was that he needs to pass more no doubt that he is great.
i love the lakers with all my heard, i bleed purple and gold. but we have to be objective sometimes and evaluate players for who they are not the team we play for. we cant be close minded like laker4lyfe and jay…

imfasterthanur said “and Lebron james, a brilliant player, but hasn’t had a good game against the Lakers on the big stage, can’t hit a free throw nor does he have a consistent jump-shot.”

You do realize Lebron has a better field goal percentage than Kobe right?? Pretty amazing for someone with an inconsistent jump shot. I guess that makes Kobe jump shot even less consistent….

  • LakerBalla

i love the lakers and thnik that they are going to win the NBA championship agianst LeBron and the Cavs.. They will win because Kobe is an underated defender and he knows how to play Bron. Both teams will breeze through everyone else and have a 6 game series and the lakers win. With bynum and gasol and lamar all on the inside and dominating the paint against (dirty verajo) and big z. the lakers bench is much better and deeper especially since the pleasnt suprise of SHANNON BROWN. he was quite the stud and i loved the great steal on d-will. (i live in utah and get lots of sh!t from all my buddies and they think d-will is the best in the NBA, what a joke) but with Shannon and Fish and Farmar they have to many point guards then they know what to do with.

he apple is the pomaceous fruit of the apple tree, species Malus domestica in the rose family Rosaceae. It is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits. The tree is small and deciduous, reaching 3 to 12 metres (9.8 to 39 ft) tall, with a broad, often densely twiggy crown.[1] The leaves are alternately arranged simple ovals 5 to 12 cm long and 3–6 centimetres (1.2–2.4 in) broad on a 2 to 5 centimetres (0.79 to 2.0 in) petiole with an acute tip, serrated margin and a slightly downy underside. Blossoms are produced in spring simultaneously with the budding of the leaves. The flowers are white with a pink tinge that gradually fades, five petaled, and 2.5 to 3.5 centimetres (0.98 to 1.4 in) in diameter. The fruit matures in autumn, and is typically 5 to 9 centimetres (2.0 to 3.5 in) diameter. The center of the fruit contains five carpels arranged in a five-point star, each carpel containing one to three seeds.[1]
The tree originated from Central Asia, where its wild ancestor is still found today. There are more than 7,500 known cultivars of apples resulting in range of desired characteristics. Cultivars vary in their yield and the ultimate size of the tree, even when grown on the same rootstock.[2]
At least 55 million tonnes of apples were grown worldwide in 2005, with a value of about $10 billion. China produced about 35% of this total.[3] The United States is the second leading producer, with more than 7.5% of the world production. Turkey, France, Italy, and Iran are also among the leading apple exporters.

The most important part of an optical disc drive is an optical path, placed in a pickup head (PUH),[1] usually consisting of semiconductor laser, a lense for guiding the laser beam, and photodiodes detecting the light reflection from disc’s surface.[2]
Initially, CD lasers with a wavelength of 780 nm were used, being within infrared range. For DVDs, the wavelength was reduced to 650 nm (red color), and the wavelength for Blu-Ray Disc was reduced to 405 nm (violet color).
Two main servomechanisms are used, the first one to maintain a correct distance between lens and disc, and ensure the laser beam is focused on a small laser spot on the disc. The second servo moves a head along the disc’s radius, keeping the beam on a groove, a continuous spiral data path.
On read only media (ROM), during the manufacturing process the groove, made of pits, is pressed on a flat surface, called land. Because the depth of the pits is approximately one-quarter to one-sixth of the laser’s wavelength, the reflected beam’s phase is shifted in relation to the incoming reading beam, causing mutual destructive interference and reducing the reflected beam’s intensity. This is detected by photodiodes that output electrical signals.
A recorder encodes (or burns) data onto a recordable CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, or BD-R disc (called a blank) by selectively heating parts of an organic dye layer with a laser[citation needed]. This changes the reflectivity of the dye, thereby creating marks that can be read like the pits and lands on pressed discs. For recordable discs, the process is permanent and the media can be written to only once. While the reading laser is usually not stronger than 5 mW, the writing laser is considerably more powerful. The higher writing speed, the less time a laser has to heat a point on the media, thus its power has to increase proportionally. DVD burner’s laser often peaks at about 100 mW in continuous wave, and 225 mW pulsed.
For rewritable CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, or BD-RE media, the laser is used to melt a crystalline metal alloy in the recording layer of the disc. Depending on the amount of power applied, the substance may be allowed to melt back (change the phase back) into crystalline form or left in an amorphous form, enabling marks of varying reflectivity to be created.
Double-sided media may be used, but they are not easily accessed with a standard drive, as they must be physically turned over to access the data on the other side.
Double layer (DL) media have two independent data layers separated by a semi-reflective layer. Both layers are accessible from the same side, but require the optics to change the laser’s focus. Traditional single layer (SL) writable media are produced with a spiral groove molded in the protective polycarbonate layer (not in the data recording layer), to lead and synchronize the speed of recording head. Double-layered writable media have: a first polycarbonate layer with a (shallow) groove, a first data layer, a semi-reflective layer, a second (spacer) polycarbonate layer with another (deep) groove, and a second data layer. The first groove spiral usually starts on the inner edge and extends outwards, while the second groove starts on the outer edge and extends inwards.

    [edit]Rotational mechanism

Optical drives’ rotational mechanism differs considerably from hard disk drives’, in that the latter keep a constant angular velocity (CAV), in other words a constant number of revolutions per minute (RPM). With CAV, a higher throughput is generally achievable at an outer disc area, as compared to inner area.
On the other hand, optical drives were developed with an assumption of achieving a constant throughput, in CD drives initially equal to 150 KiB/s. It was a feature important for streaming audio data, that always tend to require a constant bit rate. But to ensure no disc capacity is wasted, a head had to transfer data at a maximum linear rate at all times too, without slowing on the outer rim of disc. This had led to optical drives—until recently—operating with a constant linear velocity (CLV). The spiral groove of the disc passed under its head at a constant speed. Of course the implication of CLV, as opposed to CAV, is that disc angular velocity is no longer constant, and spindle motor need to be designed to vary speed between 200 RPM on the outer rim and 500 RPM on the inner rim.
Later CD drives kept the CLV paradigm, but evolved to achieve higher rotational speeds, popularly described in multiples of a base speed. As a result, a 4X drive, for instance, would rotate at 800-2000 RPM, while transferring data steadily at 600 KiB/s, which is equal to 4 x 150 KiB/s.
For DVD base speed, or “1x speed”, is 1.385 MB/s, equal to 1.32 MiB/s, approximately 9 times faster than CD’s base speed. For Blu-ray drive base speed is 6.74 MB/s, equal to 6.43 MiB/s.
There are mechanical limits to how quickly a disc can be spun. Beyond a certain rate of rotation, around 10000 RPM, centrifugal stress can cause the disc plastic to creep and possibly shatter. On the outer edge of the CD disc, 10000 RPM limitation roughly equals to 52x speed, but on the inner edge only to 20x. Some drives further lower their maximum read speed to around 40x on the reasoning that blank discs will be clear of structural damage, but that discs inserted for reading may not be. Without higher rotational speeds, increased read performance may be attainable by simultaneously reading more than one point of a data groove [3], but drives with such mechanisms are more expensive, less compatible, and very uncommon.

The Z-CLV recording strategy is easily visible after burning a DVD-R.
Because keeping a constant transfer rate for the whole disc is not so important in most contemporary CD uses, to keep the rotational speed of the disc safely low while maximizing data rate, a pure CLV approach needed to be abandoned. Some drives work in partial CLV (PCLV) scheme, by switching from CLV to CAV only when a rotational limit is reached. But switching to CAV requires considerable changes in hardware design, so instead most drives use the zoned constant linear velocity (Z-CLV) scheme. This divides the disc into several zones, each having its own different constant linear velocity. A Z-CLV recorder rated at “52X”, for example, would write at 20X on the innermost zone and then progressively increase the speed in several discrete steps up to 52X at the outer rim.
    [edit]Loading mechanisms

Current optical drives use either a tray-loading mechanism, where the disc is loaded onto a motorised or manually operated tray, or a slot-loading mechanism, where the disc is slid into a slot and drawn in by motorised rollers. Slot-loading drives have the disadvantage that they cannot usually accept the smaller 80 mm discs or any non-standard sizes; however, the Wii video game console seems to have defeated this problem, for it is able to load standard size DVDs and 80 mm GameCube discs in the same slot-loading drive.
A small number of drive models, mostly compact portable units, have a top-loading mechanism where the drive lid is opened upwards and the disc is placed directly onto the spindle.[4]
Some early CD-ROM drives used a mechanism where CDs had to be inserted into special cartridges or caddies, somewhat similar in appearance to a 3.5″ floppy diskette. This was intended to protect the disc from accidental damage by enclosing it in a tougher plastic casing, but did not gain wide acceptance due to the additional cost and compatibility concerns—such drives would also inconveniently require “bare” discs to be manually inserted into an openable caddy before use.
    [edit]Computer interfaces

Most internal drives for personal computers, servers and workstations are designed to fit in a standard 5.25″ drive bay and connect to their host via an ATA or SATA interface. External drives usually have USB or FireWire interfaces. Some portable versions for laptop use power themselves off batteries or off their interface bus.
Drives with SCSI interface exist, but are less common and tend to be more expensive, because of the cost of their interface chipsets and more complex SCSI connectors.
When the optical disc drive was first developed, it was not easy to add to computer systems. Some computers such as the IBM PS/2 were standardizing on the 3.5″ floppy and 3.5″ hard disk, and did not include a place for a large internal device. Also IBM PCs and clones at first only included a single ATA drive interface, which by the time the CDROM was introduced, was already being used to support two hard drives. Early laptops simply had no built-in high-speed interface for supporting an external storage device.
This was solved through several techniques:
Early sound cards could include a second ATA interface, though it was often limited to supporting a single optical drive and no hard drives. This evolved into the modern second ATA interface included as standard equipment
A parallel port external drive was developed that connected between a printer and the computer. This was slow but an option for laptops
A PCMCIA optical drive interface was also developed for laptops
A SCSI card could be installed in desktop PCs for an external SCSI drive enclosure, though SCSI was typically much more expensive than other options

Kobe is the most overhyped player ever in any sport…he is a dirty player with an out of control ego that detracts from his team’s overall performance…there are many many other players that would have served the the lakers better…and LA has probably lost championships because of Kobe’s presence –he is a TO of BB.

..And what kind of tool gives themselves a nickname like black mamba–what a joke…This guy is a princess and that should be his nickname: Princess KB

I hope Artest knocks his head off in the next game… he more than deserves it.

Lebron is so vastly better the KB it is almost a joke to make comparisons. I mean that guy is true leader–taking a small market team to the finals with starters that would be on the bench for the lakers…gimme a break–while Kobe has to be babied in the leagues premier organization …and has absolutely not bettered it…this guy is tool and I really do not understand how lakers fans can be stoked on princess kobe

You base your fact that Lebron is a better shooter by percentages???!?!!?!??! are you kidding me? His percentage is boosted high because most of his points are dunks (lots of them by alley-oop.). Have you ever seen Kobe and Lebron play? its clear kobe is a better shooter. Look my favorite player is neither of them (i love wade hehe, but he is not as good as kobe or lebron i admit, but closer than most think). so let me do an objective analysis because its clear you guys are all biased (yes you all are).

Kobe is a better shooter. Hands down no doubt. Although Lebron has improved, and maybe someday will become consistent as well. But for now, edge Kobe no doubt. dont be fooled by some crazy long or miracle shots lebron makes. that does not make him a good shooter. lebron is so strong maybe one day he will be amazing because with his strength he could pull up from half court no problem haha. game on the line who do you want to shoot the jumper? Kobe, i thought so. lebrons free throw percentage shows this. he is not a great shooter like kobe is. lebron can get really hot though sometimes (i mean so can kobe), and when both are hot they are fun to watch. but fans of lebron often say well look at milwaukee game or w/e to show lebron a great shooter. Fans, you cannot just point out one game. we all know lebron is a good shooter. but he is not consistent enough. game on the line i dont want him shooting a jumper.

Kobe is a better scorer. Kobe can score in any way imaginable. he can go left, right and shoot either way, he can pull up, blow past, shoot a floater, dunk, lay it up, left hand, right hand, bank it, fade. it doesnt matter, the ball is going in. Lebron is adding more facets of his game, but kobe is the better scorer…cough 81. people may say lebron averaged more. that does not mean at all that he is a better scorer. Kobe averages less minutes than him and now is learning that he can trust his teammates more and conserve his energy for the post season. lebron is more drive and power. he occasionally pulls up and hits from there. kobe can post, can pull up, can do anything. kobe is a better scorer no doubt.

Lebron is a better driver due to the obvious fact that he is huge (steroids anyone? i wonder if the nba will ever check him and dwight howard, but that is besides the point). Lebron with a full head of steam is scary for the average man.

Kobe is a better defender. Kobe has Lebrons number too. it seems that kobe is the only one in the league that knows how to play lebron. its fun to watch them go at eachother. When kobe concentrates and locks down and grits his teeth, there is no better defender. (lebron and wade are just as good as kobe on weakside help defense coming in for the block, but on ball they are not as good). lebron can block better from behind since he jumps crazy. but weakside block they are equal.

lebron is more versatile becuase he can play 1-4, kobe can only play 1-3.

kobe has better ball skills and dribbling. lebron may have just as good, but he just blows by people so we never see any of the moves haha.

Lebron is a better rebounder and passer. Again lebron is huge so is is supposed to be better at rebounding. so i dont want to hear people say he gets more rebounds than kobe…he is supposed to! However, lebron i think is a better passer also due to the fact he is stronger. He often zips passes to where others cant because they are not strong enough to get it to the destination that quickly. also lebron gets more assist due to the fact he has more shooters and he handles the ball almost every possesion. he has the ball in his hands so much (as it should be though since he is cavs best player). but he is a better passer than kobe.

Kobe has better killer instinct and is better clutch player. Whenever there is a big game/big moment, notice who always steps up? Kobe. I want to believe that lebron is getting better in his mentality, but i havent seen it yet. He fades in most the big games (except boston game 7 he was superb). against the lakers and against an even flu ridden kobe, he let kobe control the game and lebron faded. Kobe has the killer instainct that lebron does not seem to have. lebron seems to eager to get everybody to like him. last shot, kobe needs the ball. In the olympics, again, kobe was the guy who stepped up in gold medal game when the usa needed it most (as well as wade).

Better teammate is a wash. I would have said lebron before when kobe was demanding a trade, but kobe has matured and now they are both phenominal teammates. both great leaders. so its a wash. they both lead in their own way.

and dont say lakers have so much talent. Lets get this straight now, Odom is a good role player, but he is not a superstar because he is very inconsistent. He never shows up consistently, and is often quiet on the floor. lets analyze both teams. First of all, dont hate on big Z, he is very good.

PLUS basketball is not about talent always, all nba players have talent. Cleveland has the best TEAM in the nba. i dont mean most skilled, i mean they are like the spurs of old. the best team. great team defense and great feel for eachother. lakers get by with talent but they dont concentrate on defense always and try to get by on talent alone sometimes. Cleveland has best team, and great defense. when u have great defense, you dont need all the talent in the wolrd. plus lets not sleep on clevelands talent though. they have bigZ who is very good, varejao who is one of best team players. varejao does everything a team needs. great teammate. delonte west, szerbiak, gibson, and williams are all snipers, great great shooters. and williams is a star. williams is what the cavs needed. because without him, they are the same team from years before, the 4-5 seed that are similar to my heat (heat need another superstar like williams on the cavs). pavlovic is a good shooter too, and ben wallace coming off the bench. what a defensive stud to have come off the bench. joe smith has lost a step, but anice vet to have come off becnh. the cavs are tough players and really d up. while lakers have more talent, cavs have more team play and team qualities. (and dont say this is because lebron is a better leader, this is because to be good, they need to play as they do-it has to do with mike brown here).
Lets look at the lakers now, fisher is old and slowing down, but is a great shoooter and good leader and more importantly great person. odom like i said earlier could be great, but is not because he is so inconsistent and is an average player most nights, and great a few nights. he had a streak where he was amazing this season (had like 19,20, then 21 rebounds), but then now he is back to mediocrity. bynum is good, but people hype him too much, he is about the same level as big Z, but bigZ is a better shooter to stretch the defense., while bynum is a better defensive player. gasol is good, but struggles against strength. gasol is great though. good big man to have. the laker bench has really underachieved this year. last year they were sooo good, this year, they are actually hurting the team. vujacic lost his machine touch, and they lost turiaf who energized the bench. walton is ok shooter, farmar is playing pretty decent and powell is an ok shooter. shanon brown has been a nice surprise and he is the only one exceeding expectations. farmar maybe should be starting.Ariza is a good hustle player and do it all good but not great player. he is starting to shoot better, which is what he needs to do.

    ok noe lets compare.
at PG, cavs have advantage with williams
at SG, lakers have advantage with Kobe
at SF, cavs have advantage with Lebron
at PF, lakers have advantage with Gasol/odom
at C, its a wash, bynum is better at defense, while BigZ has offense.
at bench, its close if lakers bench does not play well, but lakers bench can dowell, so Ill say lakers bench is better.

So, its clear to see, lakers are not to dominant team. they have more overall talent than the cavs, but the nba is about matchups, and the cavs have a great team that people disrespect. so depending who you prefer, bynum or bigZ, it is either lakers 3-2or cavs 3-2 as far as starters.

and dont say lebron dominates teams that kobe did not because that is not true. and it is a dumb comparison. when kobe had no help whatsoever he lead them to the playoffs which is phenominal. (whenever you have kwame brown and smush parker, its a miracle to win a game). and dont say kobe is overrated, because every1 knows that is not true. you cannot compare different series to say who is better. by that logic, you would say when jordan lost to celts, then lakers beat celts, then magic is better than jordan? that is just illogical. and also shaq and kobe won those championship together. without either one, lakers would not have one. shaq could not win with afernee because afernee is no kobe, it took kobe and shaq for them to win. and dont say wade led miami all by himself, as my favorite player is wade and favorite team is the heat (good season heat!), wade needed shaq as well. Every team that wins needs a solid combo. jordan could not win without pippin. i could go on and on. and kobe fans, lebron deserved mvp this year, they had best record. is lakers had best record then you would have an argument. i knew wade wouldnt get it since when kobe was in same position (subpar team barely above .500), kobe never got it (and kobe even had better seasons than wade had his year). but good try Wade, next year for sure!

My overall conclusion. kobe is better today. but i would invest in a rearview mirror if i were him, because like they say, images may be closer than they appear. and lebron is close behind.

also as far as saying he takes too many shots. are you kidding me? kobe is the best player so he should take the shots. at end of game best players always take the shots. i rather have kobe shoot then ariza. kobe takes over when he feels it necessary. he feels the team. dont knock kobe with innacurrate statements. yes in utah he missed those shots, but most were good shots, and just like others said, he can make all those shots. sometimes he does not make them , but everyteam does the same thing. nowitski takes all shots down stretch, that is what a coach wants. best player shooting the ball. and as far as kobe trustin teammates, i feel he has gotten a lot better. and he trust them, remember his kick out to horry against portland for game winning 3?) he just never trusted smush parker and kwame and them which is rightfully so. those terrible players or those years would never make good things happen. so kobe got this rep during the years when his teammates were terrible and prove that they could not be trusted. now kobe trusts them and its obvious watching them, and while he does take shots late in game, that is what phil jackson wants. as a former basketball player, you always want the ball in your best players hands late so if you lose you can say well we lost with our best player. u dont want to look back and say well we lost but we didnt get it to our best player.

with a great scorer you have to take the misses with tha mkes. its part of the game. i mean should we tell kobe “only shoot when you will make it?” haha. then again just like all great players, they think every shot they shoot is going in.

do you want lamar taking shots down stretch? i know i dont. gasol? nope. very weak in clutch. fisher? only if hes open for three (which would be from a kobe drive or getting double teammed). ariza. no. bynum, no. so kobe should be taking shots.

  • Travis Johnson

by the way cavs are great team defensively and a great rebounding team. cavs have such a great team. they remind me of the spurs as far as great team

when lebron learns to shoot better consistenly, he may become the best player ever. he needs to win championships of course in the end. but wit his body (possibly steroids), he SHOULD become the best ever, and if he doesnt, he underachieved. (steroid, because have you ever seen a body like that in basketball? i didnt think so. also dwight howard might as wel). lebron uses steroids i think though becuase he looks like those football players who have been caught and some baseball players (arod, or should i say a-roid). but nba doesnt care. ever if the nba started to check for real, would they turn lebron in? the commish would porbably keep it secret because it would kill lots of bball fans to see lebron using roids. kobe is better than him now and jordan was better, but if lebron does not become better, that is ridiculous. he has more talent than anyone ever with his body. if he does not become the best especially after steroids, he underachieved

The Lakers need to draft a speedy PG to keep up with the Paul’s, Williams’, and now Brook’s of the West. Fisher is over the hill and can not hit the big 3 point shot when the lakers need him most. They should start Farmer the rest of the Playoffs and Draft JOHNNY FLYNN, PG Syracuse

I did not like the documentary. I was expecting to see Kobe and his lifestyle. Not him on the court the whole time. Make one with him and his wife, the house…what he does day in and day out.

  • Scott Arden

    Good piece. I enjoyed it.

Perhaps, however, Spike should know that Kobe is an athlete, not an aflete, as he says in the opening minutes. As a movie director, I would think he would know the proper pronunciation of the word.

  • kris wilson

lebron is a beast, a physical phenomenon who gets into the paint and scores at will. He is bigger and stronger than kobe, but he is not better. Kobe is the most skilled player, his mid range and 3 point game is far superior is better than lebrons. His jumper stretches out the defense and doesnt allow you to double pau, odom or bynum in the paint. The fact that he can shoot anywhere on the floor allows gasol and others to get one on one match ups and makes the whole team better. Lebron uses power kobe uses fineness. Surprisingly no one here has mentioned that the lakers went through the much tougher western conference and played a much tougher schedule. Who would you rather play your series against? Detroit and Atlanta or Utah then Houston. Lebron has the luxury of playing in the east, kobe has stronger opponents with more fight in them. Bryants overall game is the best in the league his free throw percentage is way above lebrons, his jumper is better, he is a better on ball defender, and he has 3 rings on his hand. The fact that shaq was apart of them doesnt discredit bryant.

Mark makes a valid point. Not sure why anyone would respect such a man. How soon we all forget…

This was such a great documentary not better than Through The Fire though, look out for one of the best documentary’s to ever hit the air about a kid from Dallas Texas who has a amazing story. The Kids name is Cameron Sadler. Remember that name, he’s just a blue collar kid that’s making his way to the top.

[Comment ID #63612 Will Be Quoted Here] Hey Yoni, your Dumbass says checkk and see what Lebron and Wade are doing, I just did and Kobe is doing better like always…..

  • pala1

yoni is a hard-headed wannabe sports analyst..I would just stop wastin my time trying to talk some sense into him.Laker fans should be happy that the lakers are headed to the finals again…and kobe is LEADING the team better than he ever has…while lebron is blaming his team for their losses and dwyane is already out.I agree with the guy that said that dwight and the magic over-achieved last season..and their doing it again this season(that must account for something). I respect lebron and dwiane wade, but i just hate when people go as far as putting kobe below them just to show that they’re haterz.
