Sources: Shaq traded to the Cavaliers

Mind you, this trade shouldn’t put the Lakers in panic mode since the Cavs are the in the Eastern Conference but it sure does make things interesting in the whole “Kobe vs. Shaq” scenario. How long will it take Shaq to proclaim LeBron the best player in the NBA? Put your bets in!

shacavESPN: The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Phoenix Suns have come to an agreement on a blockbuster trade that sends Shaquille O’Neal to Cleveland to team with LeBron James, according to sources.

The deal has been agreed to in principle and is expected to be finalized Thursday, according to sources.

Cleveland will send Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic to Phoenix for the future Hall of Famer. Sources said the Suns will also receive the 46th pick in Thursday’s NBA draft and $500,000.

…lebron cant win without shaq… hahaha… i hope he clogs up that lane for lbj and slows down their game, and changes it all up like he did in phoenix.

    • “WE DA BEST”LAKESHOW

Go ahead Shaq and run to another Superstar. Who else is gonna get the job done in the fourth quarter. As hard is this year was winning the championship wait till next year Laker fans…..Were going to destroy cleveland and Kobe and Bynum are going to murder Lebron and Shaq….

    • David

      2 birds with one stone

    • Einstein

This means nothing. SHaq is another year older and he aint getting any better. This just ensures Lebron is out of cleveland next year.

[Comment ID #77081 Will Be Quoted Here]

      Exactly.

Shaq will clog the lane, exposing Lebron’s lack of a mid-range game even more so. Until the Cavs add more perimeter shooters (which hurts that they released Pavlovic), this will only give them short-term success. Despite Ilguaskus’ age, his ability to shoot at the Center position is what allowed defenders to spread out, making Lebron more dangerous in the lane. That dynamic is gone with Shaq in the line-up.

      LAKERS RE-PEAT!!!!!

    • matthew

hahah, shaq being in the cavs pretty much ruin’s lebron’s career.

      HAHAHAHAHAH!!!

That’s the Cavalier front office comforting Lebron so he’ll stay.

    • PurpsNGold

The Cavs got worse.. Shaq is a 17 and 8 guy now.. Who knows if he’ll last the whole season.. Also Big Z CANNOT be moved to the power-foward postion cuz he’s too slow.. Anderson V still sucks.. They’re front court is too slow and old.. Magics & Celts front line will still torch them.. Cavs need a better power-forward to be really be good or even give our Lakers a run for their money.. Till then, this trade made them older and slower..

    • YellowPurpleFever

This is another desperate attempt by Danny Ferry ops, is it Ainge, I mean Ferry. Trying to keep Bronze a few more years with Shaq IF they win, BIG IF…Not gonna happen. Shaq is too old and too fat to run. They wont pass the Magic next year! mark my words!
This makes the NBA’s drama really fun this summer.
Spur got alittle better, still old (JR)
Phoenix is done, thanks to Steve Kerr
Even Clips got alittle stronger (Griff), same owner
      Dallas got “little” Dirk (love-craze)
      Houston injuries prone (Yaochy)
      Thuggets no news, no problem!
Portland, watch out for these youngsters!
The West is our once again

    • magicfan4lifesuckers!!!lulz

how to crappy get crappier hahhahahahahahahaha what a dumb trade what the cavs needed was a player who can play d and help with the scoring load and not a player who sit and clogg up the lane go magics

I’d still rather want a Celtics vs Lakers matchup finals.

so who are we playing christmas day?.. boston or cleavland?.. i’m betting its cleavland.. and boston will play magic.. the day game will be spurs and nuggets.. honestly just because its the east.. i think the cavs start off with a real strong record.. (cuz its the east!).. and then they start to get tested and by christmas when the lakers blow them out.. everyone realizes that shaq is too old to get it done.. lebron is not happy.. the team chemistry is down the toilet… ferry starts to panic and by mid jan. early feb just before the deadline.. we start hearing lebron trade rumors.. in come the knicks.. remember who said this!!..

    • OneTrophyOneChamp

hmmm, last time I checked the Lakers are still the NBA Champions. Shaq who?

    • ricky

Like everyone says, Shaq will only clog up the lane and expose LeBron’s lack of a perimeter game. LeBron is only good when he has the ball going to the bucket. Shaq will demand the ball and if he doesn’t get it, he will whine. If he does, LeBron’s effectiveness will drop. Shaq will ruin Cleveland like he did Phoenix. What LeBron needs is a versatile power forward who is mobile from both inside and mid-range. With Shaq, he will just demand the ball and jam up the paint so LeBron won’t even get inside for a layup.

    • Fred A.

How about this trade: Luke Walton/Adam Morrision for Stephen Jackson(of Golden State) I feel this would be a great trade, because this will give use extra help on the defensive side of the ball and also will save more money. This is how it shapes up:

      Fisher/Farmer/Brown
      MVP/Vujacic/Yue
      Ariza/Jackson
      Gasol/Odom/Damarre Carrol or Tyler Hansbourgh
      Bynum/Powell/Mebenga

      WHAT YOU THINK? :)

    • Hugo Boss

      S. Jackson sounds great.

    • WifelovesLuke

No on Stephen Jackson. Walton is too valuable of a “role” player to the triangle offense.

As far as Shaq goes: as a fan of the NBA, I think this is great. It’s one of the reasons the NBA is thriving right now. It does an amazing job of marketing it’s players. What Shaq brings to their team is (obvious) size, power, D, rebounding. What it also does is put another person on the floor that demands a double team. Even at 37, he is still an excellent passer off the block. Every team loves to be able to play inside out basketball but not every team has the personnel to do it. Does this move help them beat the Celtics and the Magic next year? Nope. Where Cleveland fails against those teams is at the Forward position.

But hey, I’ll definately watch some Cleveland games next year just to watch the stories behind the game.

Shaq’s new nickname : The Big Witness!!!

    • http://lakers.com Shaq_who?

SHAQ CAN’T WIN WITHOUT KOBE BRYANT!

SHAQ CAN’T WIN WITHOUT DYWANE WADE

SHAQ CAN’T WIN WITHOUT LEBRON JAMES

THE “BIG WITNESS” GOOD NICKNAME LOL

    • Thomas

Wow….looks like cleveland will do anything to keep Lebron. Guess what: they still arent comin out of the East, still have to get past Boston who will be looking to recaputure its place in the east and Orlando will be looking to keep its eastern title alive….good luck but i dont see it happenin….2011 Knicks season tickets go on sale soon. Get them before they run out!!

    • LakersFirst

I’m not sure why people think this isn’t a good trade for Cleveland. They need a center. Ilgauskaus is terrible and Shaq is a major upgrade. I’m not saying Shaq is the dominant Shaq that once played for the Lakers but the fact is Shaq will do what people are saying, clog the lane, which will benefit Lebron, much like it benefitted Kobe and DWade. Also Shaq will help Cleveland defensively. The big question is … can old Shaq last the entire season?

Also, Cleveland gave up nothing to acquire Shaq. They gave up Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic – an overpaid mini-center and a bench player. That’s nothing.

Lastly, this trade simply reinforces that Andrew Bynum needs to remain healthy all year and get back into form.

i think you’re smoking crack if you think someone would take our crap and give us one of their starters.. word is pacers want to trade jack.. sasha/farmar for jack.. saves us money.. or how bout this trade…

sasha/farmar/morrison and a 1st round pick to chicago for kirk hinrich.. chicago gets a back up pg cheap.. a shooter and an expiring contract.. and the pick.. lakers get their pg of the future..

      kirk/fisher/brown
      kobe/sun
      ariza/walton
      gasol/odom/powell
      bynum/dj

Tyler Hansbourgh? seriously.. at the 29.. his stock is rising why how could we pick him at 29?

    • gus26

well the lakers just sold the pick so never mind on the pick.. make it a second rounder..

    • Robert

Hmm … if Cleveland loses next year (either doesn’t make it to the Finals, or loses in the Finals), then … LeBron can’t win with or without Shaq. Kobe won with AND without Shaq. This means that …

      Kobe > LeBron

      end of story.

(Wilbon said that LeBron would have to win 5 rings, or more, to pass Kobe on the ‘greatest player’ list. Good luck!)

    • Robert

On another note, the COY (Coach of the Year) would have to pull a “Phil” and manage two monstrous egos. Or even .. just ….. umm …. coach!

He’ll have to figure out something else besides, “let LeBron have the ball, and let him figure out what to do”. LeBron is a great player, but the team would need a great coach …. like Phil …. to run the team properly. I don’t think they’re prepared to do that – Shaq or no Shaq.

    • mr.clutch101

I hope Shaq eats all he wants this summer, and is slow as hell when the season begins. CLOG THAT LANE SHAQTUS!!!

Lakers & Cavs wont play on xmas because they always let kobe and lebron play @ home.

    • Robert

On a related note, ESPN writers tanked big time this year with their COY, MVP combo choice – all ready to hand LeBron the crown, etc. etc. They need to re-think their voting process. Should have been Phil-Kobe.

And, while on the subject of Shaq – I wonder how he’ll do in the post season? esp. after 82 games. He better bring Phoenix’ athletic trainer with him to Cleveland – it’s a bit colder up there.

    • nabil

I think it’s great news. Certainly will be an even more entertaining east playoffs, and whoever gets to the finals will be beaten up pretty bad. Plus, wouldn’t it just be so awesome to beat down Lebronze and Snack at the same time?

Anyways, I’m not worried. As a few of you guys said, Shaq destroyed the suns. They were the number one team in the west (literally) when he went there, and look what happened.

    • OnenOnly24

I going to laugh my head off if Shaq suffers a major injury during the season.

    • nick

Shaq how does KOBES BUT TASTE?

    • HolyGuacamole

Not jinxing anything, but I have no doubt that we’ll have at least a repeat.

Really. Shaq’s basically just a sort of illusion: something to scare and intimidate. And beyond that, I really don’t see the big, big threat of a Cavs team with Shaq. Sure, they’ll be good like last season, but at the end of the day, what the Cavs really need is to learn from their mistakes; establish a better and more organized system rather than just using the tiresome strategy of giving LeBron the ball and hoping he makes a great play. I mean, as they were before, they were a great team, all they needed was more experience, and, quite frankly, better coaching. Mike Brown could not be close to being COY without LeBron making him look great.

With Magic being a more intimidating force with Vince Carter, and Celtics looking to bounce back with KG back in the line-up, it’s going to be way tougher than last year for the Cavs to even clinch the Eastern Conference. Yes, as some here, I want Lakers vs. Celtics!

But no one can take this away from us: Lakers Champs ’09!
