Well, we really don’t post too many rumors, but I thought this one was interesting because it brought up a rumor that has been floating around, silently, from other places. Take it for what it’s worth, with a grain of salt, but none-the-less, enjoy this rumor:

LakersTopBuzz: “I was having lunch with my lovely bride at the Phuc Phi when I overheard these two gentlemen talking about a trade involving the lakers, celtics, and Wolves….I didn’t want to seem overly interested, but they talked about Garnett going to the LA and the Celtics gettting Odom. I finally got the courage to turn and see who they were and I am pretty sure one of the gentlemen was owner of the Wolves. Even from out of the states I am rooting for Garnett to LA.”

UPDATE: Just got the reply from Momo… It’s a match, that was the Wolves owner.

  • SILO

Even if it is a rumor, it’s the deal that everybody has been wanting to happen. Let’s just hope the buzz becomes louder, and the rumor spreads through the mainstream. We’re all sick of the talk, we want things to happen. KG to LA! It’s time to negotiate, regulators mount up!

  • DIGI

If this deal ends up happening, I will be very happy.

But what kinda frustrates me is that… back when the 4-team deal fell through because the Celtics didn’t want to end up with JO… why was Indiana even being involved in the discussion???? We should have given Odom to Boston and made a 3team deal from day 1!!!! I have this horrible feeling that it was Kupchak’s idea to involve Indiana because he had already been talking to them about JO.

Yeah, I’ve heard of this guy before and his reputation – even though I’ve never been in contact with him myself, I know he has a solid reputation. Worth the post imo.

  • iblausy

lets just build the team around kwame.

  • Sepehr

According to Ld2k, the lakers would give up Kwame, Bynum, and Odom and only receive Garnett??? Trust me I love garnett but by giving up those 3 is alot for an individual player, the lakers have no cap room and have just given up 3 bigs for a single one. If that deal goes through our bigs will be Garnett, Turiaf, Maybe Mihm (resing). The lakers will be crippled especially since they play in the west with good bigs. The lakers would then have to sign cheap centers which would mean a very weak front court aside from garnett.

  • One35

Let’s just cross our fingers and hope KG ends up in LA.

  • http://ld2k.com LD2k

Correction – according to a thread at RealGM.

Remember, these are forums we’re talking about – we’d get something back alongside Garnett for salary issues, I believe.

Well, my guess is because indi already said they would do odom & bynum for o’neal, and pierce demanded another star next to him within a week (at the times the talks were happening), so we thought sending JO there could get them to give more to minny.

the thing that bugs me the most about you people is that you get on the guys that put together this wonderful little site. but youre the ones that are refreshing it every five seconds.

i mean. the other day when there werent really any posts you people were blasting ld2k up the wazoo about not having anything new to post. but now that he posts what seems to be a legitimate and possible scenario you bash him? come on. beggars cant be choosers folks

i for one think that this is a good trade all the way around. i mean look at it. the lakers will get kg and keep kobe happy. the celtics get a player that would thrive not being the secondary option making them a immediate contender in the east. and minnesota gets two big expiring contracts in theo and kwame, as well as two stars to be in gerald green and drew. of course youd have to make it all work financially and whatnot. but i think it works nonetheless. and i for one am happy to hear something new. so thanks for the post ld2k. and keep up the great work

  • punkjones

Yeah, this is the one I was talking about a few days ago on the Magloire thread here. I saw this rumor on Clublakers.com and provided a link for Ed24. It’s amazing because it is such a great trade proposal, if it isn’t true, someone did their homework and put together something that really SHOULD be true. The trade works exceedingly well for all parties. We lose the most in that we deplete our ranks of big guys except for Cook (a guard in a big man’s body) and Turiaf. But still, we get KG which is what it’s all about as the name of this site attests.

It’s remarkable how it gives all the teams what they want and need, Celtics get Odom, a hell of a passer and great teammate for guys like Ray Allen and Pierce. Can you imagine how Lamar would thrive without the pressure of having to be the second leading scorer? He could do what he does best – rebound, and play point forward getting those guys the ball. That would be some kind of team in the East, a real contender with Al Jefferson at center and Lamar as the PF.

Minny gets what they want in expiring contracts ($20 million worth!) and nice young talent with Bynum and Green. They don’t have to take Odom’s contract which was their big concern with us.

We should probably get Mark Blount back since we’re giving Minny two centers. Should not be a problem.

Crazy thing is it works out salary-wise as well.

Too good to be true? Maybe, but man, if these GM’s are reading or listening to these rumors even a little, and this isn’t yet true, they should think about making this happen. It’s by far the only really good sounding trade option for KG that I’ve heard. Win/win/win situation.

    Make it happen Mitch/Kevin/Danny!

LOL has anyone noticed that the celtics are gonna become a dangerous team? ray allen, paul pierce, and lamar odom. lol. shit is getting dangerous.

  • lakerfan81

There are few ways that make this trade better all the way areound. Obviously givting up Odom/Bynum/ and Brown for just KG makes no sense. That would leave us with either starting Turiaf or an out of shape Mihm at Center, assuming we resign him for a reasonable price. IF all three of those players were traded we will be getting another contract along side of KG. The 3 bad contracts Minnesota would like to get rid of are Jaric, Hudson and Blunt. The lakers do not need another Guard so they would likely as for Blunt. At least that adds some depth to the front line. Kg would have to OK the deal because he would have to waive some of his trade kicker.

Another way would be to not include Brown in the deal. Odom, Bynum nd Vujacic match salaries. The problem with this trade is that Minnesota gets less back both for next season and in expiring contracts. Vujacic is a restricted FA next year so his contract is expiring. Also with the other trade Minnesota get rid of another big contract.

There would also be draft picks involved. Boston has the rights to Minny’s 2008 1st rnd pick (I don’t think it sent to Seattle in the Ray Allen trade) acquired in the Ricky Davis, Szerbiack trade. They would probably have to give this back to Minnesota. The :Lakers would also send then their 2008 first round pick. That would give Minny 2 1st rnd picks, thats 2 more than they now have.

Why would Minnesota do this trade? Well they would be getting 1st round picks back. Their pick will likely be a lottery pick and their are some very good prospects likely to be in next years lottery; Mayo, Gordan, Rose, Beastly to name a few. It is guard heavy but Beastly is a promising PF, and Rose and Mayo are very promising PGs (if they got Rose and Mayo they could move Foye to the 2 guard where I believe he is better suited for). They get some young talent in Green and Bynum. They also get expiring contracts in Brown and Ratliff. If they did the trade that included Brown and sent us Blount along with KG, that would give them a payroll of just over 40M next off season (thats after they sign rookies). That is likely to be about 17M under salary cap. That gives them a lot of money to resign Davis (if they wanted to they could also use him in a sign and trade) and sign FA’s.

If they did a trade where the Lakers kept Brown and took only Garnett, that would give them a little less money to work with. They would have a salary of roughly 45M (after signing rookies) thus leaving the around 12M to sign FA’s.

Basically what it comes down to is, Minnesota would be trading KG, or KG Blount for Green, Bynum, and 2 2008 1st round pick. So the question is would that be enough for Minnesota?

I personally do not think they could do any better. Also Boston could include another player as well in the trade. The first trade (KG and Blount to LA) is better for Minnesota, while the 2nd trade (just KG to LA) is better for the Lakers. In either trade Boston is getting a bargain by acquiring Odom for Green, Ratliff and Minny’s 2008 pick. I think this is just a trade Idea right now, but it is hard to believe that the FOs of Boston, Minnesota and LA have not thought of it as well.

  • Lakerboy248

I hope this trade goes down. However, it would be better if Marco Jaric was in the deal so we get something extra. But if it doesn’t work, I am fine with just getting KG.

  • lakerfan81

Fatty that is pretty funny. They tried to woo Mo Williams with the chance to play with Wade and Shaq, even though he would be taking less money. Here is how I think it actually worked. He was offered 42 5 yr deal by the bucks. But his agent knew that teams like Miami were interested, so he had Williams pretend to be seriously considering Miami. The Bucks saw this and said ” we really want to keep Williams, so we will make him an offer he can’t refuse.” They then offered a much larger contract 50 M and Williams gets a bigger paycheck thus conning the Bucks out of more money because he was never seriously considering playing for less. Now all the FA PGs have already signed and Miami is left having to call up Smush’s agent.

kwame, despite his freakishly small hands and lack of coordination, is a great trade asset right now for two reasons 1)he is an athletic big that can, at a minimum, play decent defense, and 2) most importantly, he has a large expiring contract. kwame will be a key peice in any trade, whether its for KG, JO, or any other star player. obviously all us laker fans are relying on hope to get us through this off season, but put some thought into your post before you dismiss a trade package as “trash.” 10 million in instant cap relief and one of the best prospects in the nba (a 19 year old seven footer with soft hands and a budding jump hook?!?) is attractive to every team in the league.

But I think Kwame is a little bit much. I would put Cook or Smush in his spot. Cook playes to soft and Smush slakes
on his ‘D’. You see Kwame sucks, but he is strong, tall, and
sort of big. When he bumps into someone he makes them pay
    cause he is strong.

  • http://www.getgarnett.com Fred A.

Add to that Kwame is big man and we need one!!!!

  • Clutch 44

Fred A. You have accept the fact that Smush is no longer a Laker and we can’t use him in a trade.

If these are true, why are no major media outlets catching these things?

What’s most hilarious is that Bynum17 didn’t even realize that the significance of ratliff and kwame was their expiring contracts.. LMAO. moron.

this trade is definitely beneficial to each party involved, which is a rarity in the nba these days.

saw this on another site, here’s a more detailed trade proposal…
I personally think Lakers are giving up a lot, but I would like to see some change

    Here’s the trade rumor:

Minnesota get: Bynum, Ratliff, Telfair, Green, Boston #1 2008
    Boston get: Odom, Hudson
Lakers get: Garnett, Boston #2 2008

Icing on the cake: Kobe stay with Lakers for Life!

the trade rumor is not true. It doesn’t satisfy CBA trade requirements of salary match.

Hey, great points about the draft picks that will probably need to happen and about Blount. I think it’s an amazing trade idea. It’s so good that it just won’t die. I don’t care about whether it’s just speculation or not, it’s the best trade situation I’ve heard yet for Minny, not to mention us, and the Celtics as well. I do not like the other trade you posted here – Lakers do not need Jaric and his contract coming our way with the D. Fish signing. That makes no sense. Also I don’t like throwing Farmar into the mix as I see him playing significant minutes as he’s already been through the rookie season under Phil and is ready to go. Critt is a nice player but he will get the Phil treatment this year and I don’t wan’t to see uber minutes for Fish. He should shore up minutes when needed for vet leadership but not counted on for major time.

Blount coming back to the Lakers is good. He’s serviceable, leaves us with someone at Center, and we can augment with resigned Mihm (his value has dropped since Chicago and Memphis have signed big guys), and Turiaf backing up at 4 and 5.

Our team would be pretty damn amazing, and we could augment w/one or two more signings at vets minimum coupled with left over MLE money.

PS Who is this Bynum17 guy and what in the world is he doing insulting the creators and runners of this site? Ridiculous. These guys do some pretty thankless work to keep this thing going for us fanatics to dream and rant and rave and this guy is bashing them? Not cool in any way shape or form. Really.

  • Real World GM

To those of you suggesting that the Lakers should part with Odom, Bynum AND Kwame to get KG, what planet are you on? You think that is a championship team in 2007? Why give up your future (Bynum) in order to get a guy who will be available next summer? You want to make this a championship team within 2 years, here’s what Kupchak should have done:

    1. Sign & trade Walton and Sasha for Ron Artest;
    2. Use the money you paid DFish to sign Steve Francis; and
    3. In 2008 sign KG as a free agent after losing Kwame’s salary.

    Results?

    2007 Starters:

    Steve Francis
    Kobe Bryant
    Ron Artest
    Lamar Odom
    Andew Bynum/Kwame Brown

    2008 Starters:

    Steve Francis
    Kobe Bryant
    Ron Artest
    Kevin Garnett
    Andrew Bynum

Odom off the bench, or use him in a trade.

  • Lakerfan2007

Finally, someone speakes the truth! Real World GM has it exactly right. You don’t give up Bynum, Odom and Kwame for one guy. Great as Kobe & KG would be, that team doesn’t get out of the second round in the west. You need a third guy, and Lamar is a very good third guy (he just sucks as a #2 guy…).

If Bynum came out this year he would have been a legitimate #2 overall player. You don’t give that up, especially when your GM is a moron and can’t assemble talent to save his life.

Why is Artest off the table to the Buss family? Don’t you pay Phil 10 million to handle these types of players? Why pay Phil if you’re just going to sign the Waltons & Fishers of the NBA?

  • Killo

if the golden state warriors can beat the mavs just by having fans that believe…then im gonna believe that the lakers are gonna get kg. i dont care how as long as we have a kb24 and kg tandem in la

  • Fatty

    1. What if Walton or Sactown didn’t agree with your idea? I mean Walton stated he didn’t want Sac and Sac wasn’t interested in him. A sign and trade sounds nice but Walton was a free agent and got to choose his team. Surely being the grounded GM you claim to be you would know that, right?

    2. Francis agent said publicly, Francis doesn’t care about the money, he’s getting paid by Portland, 30 mil over two years. Francis wants to play for a team that will use him and can go deep in the playoffs. So my question is, why would a GM pay more for a player than what a player wants? Why wouldn’t the GM save the money and use it to add another quality player?

    3. A good GM understands the CBA rules and how they apply. Kwame’s salary off the books won’t help the Lakers get under the cap. It will only reduce our lux cap penalty tax. We will still be over the cap and will only have the ability to work with the exception rules. The MLE exception is the most we will have (5.4 mil) KG will look for other teams as well as us. Certainly no gaurantee we get him. By trading for him now, we could gaurantee him a Laker, especially if KG signs an extention.

Not argueing Francis’s value as a Laker or not. Just none of your scenerios are on solid ground and don’t work well under the CBA rules.

My suggestion to you is to go to realgm.com and read Coon’s CBA rules explained. I’ve read it three times and still have only gotten to understand the basics of the CBA. Its very complicated as Mitch said and Larry Coon does a nice job of explaining.

  • Real World GM

Fatty, all good points. My concern is that there is no coherent strategy coming out of the Lakers front office. Walton is a nice fit on a championship caliber team (e.g., the Lakers of a few years ago). That’s not this team.

Last year we rushed into the F.A. market to give Vlad a long term contract that nobody else would have dreamed. For what? At best, a three point shooter who will play 20 minutes per game.

This year we clearly needed to upgrade the point guard position. So, we drafted another 19 year old (who will flounder in Phil Jackson’s offense, like most young players), and added an older guy who we will not be able to rely on for major minutes. I love Fish as a person and as a locker room guy, but this team does not have the luxury of bringing in a locker room guy.

It is true that Francis will not be all about the money this year, but a starting job in a backcourt with Kobe (and playing in LA) might have been attractive to him. Clearly, you pay him the least you need to, but the Lakers no longer even have that option.

I’m very troubled by Kobe’s behavior this off season, but looking at where we were when the season ended and where we are now, it is hard to argue with his assessment of Laker management. I would love to see KG in purple and gold, but not at the expense of losing Bynum. It is true that he might not come here as a free agent, but the Lakers will be a MUCH more appealing team to him if they still have Odom & Bynum next year. Moreover, had they gotten Artest this summer, KG would be looking at a virtual all star team.

I hear you about the CBA. I don’t know if Walton would have been interested in going to Sacto, or if the Kings would want him. If not, I’d have offered them Kwame and his expiring contract. Salary-wise, Kwame for Artest is a wash; talent wise, it is a huge improvement. I see no obstacle to using all or part of the MLE to sign Francis (rather than Fish), not re-signing Walton and swapping Kwame for Artest.
