LeBron wants to be a Laker? Lazenby reports…

HoopsHype: The greatest NBA free agent of all time, LeBron James, is quietly making overtures to the Los Angeles Lakers.

He wants to play for them. And James is not all that concerned whether Kobe Bryant is part of the equation. Bryant, of course, has yet to sign a contract extension with L.A. and could wind up a free-agent himself, albeit one with high mileage.

But the overtures have been made. LeBron wants to wear the purple and gold. Mainly, he wants to wear a championship ring, which means he wants to play for Lakers coach Phil Jackson.

“LeBron wants to win. He’s a smart guy,” explainsone of my best inside sources, a close Jackson associate. “And Phil loves LeBron, absolutely LOVES him.”

There are many, many complicating factors to such a scenario, not the least of which is the fact that it’s way far from certain that Jackson will even be the coach of the Lakers next year.

“The Lakers have not made Phil an offer,” the Jackson source points out. However, rest assured of this, Jackson’s close associate maintained. “Phil will coach somewhere next year.”

Jackson wouldn’t dare take off next year if he’s not coaching the Lakers because he believes the following year will bring a lock-out, the source says. Jackson craves the chance to win another title before the NBA owners lock out the players in 2011-2012 to force a new contract.

“The whole league is under review,” the source points out. “Franchise values are falling, so the owners feel they must force a new labor agreement.”

Nothing but an interesting possibility to think about.

  • sasha-sucks>balls

clear the cap space… waive sasha, powell, luke, adam, and DJ.
    So LA can sign Lebron.

    Starting 5:

Bench: Farmar, Shannon, Odom, ???, Bynum

So then the payroll will be somewhere around 300 million including luxury taxes?!?!? Are you guys prepared for a pay-per-view Laker games???? Seriously, you should think before you speak…but I still respect your opinion. And just because you waive them doesn’t mean you’re NOT gonna pay them. Why would any businessman get rid of an employee under contract and still pay him to do NOTHING???? But like I said I still respect your opinion.

      • nope

It’s no use. Most of the posters here are idiots.

        • Laker101

Oh shoot, I forgot you have to meet your expectations to be able to post on this forum. I forgot its not free for people to speak their minds, we all have to be NBA experts just like you guys. I apologize….idiots

    • DR Len

      Waiving doesn’t clear cap. DJ=1 mil. Adam=5 Powell=1
Thats 7. You would have to add Bynum. 13.
Thats 20. There still over the cap.
Maybe Lebron will sign for the mid level. LLOL.

  • Trem

    This is ridiculous lmao

    • imfasterthanur

it’s as ridiculous as that photoshop job of Lebron in a Laker uniform. lol

I remember the first time I used to photoshop, too ;)

  • berkyberks

no way kobe and lebron on the same team…maybe after kobe is done with LA…maybe kobe in bulls if he don’t sign…for a chance of lebron in LA..buss still wins! but I don’t know the lakers?

  • Sean All Ivy

I don’t think that this would be logistically possible. And if it really came down to a “Kobe or Lebron” situation I feel I would pick Kobe hands down. He has a more complete O-game. We have too many skilled big men to get Lebron just dribble driving most of the time.

    • berkyberks

but if BUSS-iness talk they go for the young ones right? there is a possibility but not a kob-bron tandem…but I heard they will be teamates in 2012?….in the FIBA world .

  • Pho’k that.

I don’t want this mofo on the Lakers. I’d rather have DWade.

    • yash

Id rather have kwame back than have him

  • 09champs!

hahaha this is stupid.. if lakers waive sasha,ammo,powell,dj,farmar.. they would still be somewhere around 10 mill over the cap..

Its imposible this gets done, and i would rather have Kobe on this team. I mean, to think about he is leaving is silly, he is just waiting for the CBA thing to clear the difficulties.. Face it haters, Kobe, Fish , LO, Drew, Pau and Ron along with Phil will be lakers until their carrers are over.. Well im not sure about Drew, because he is young, but the other 5 players are locks to be with the lakers for years to come and i love it :)

  • pauer

So this really has nothing to do with Lebron at all. The article was more about the politics within the Laker’s organization.

What a stupid headline to lure the reader in

And yeah, way better to have Wade than Lebron

  • Xtro

    Lebron will come
to Los Angeles someday. He and
    Bynum will
    revive the 80s Showtime Lakers.

  • Mr Kb

The photoshop is fantastic! Lol I think thats lebronze’s head on cedric ceballos’ body haha

  • http://lakersnation showtime4eva

unless he starts or is able to play point.which’he’s not! we don’t need or want him.

  • mr.clutch101

I always knew LeBron liked the Lakers..he always says his favorite place to play is STAPLES, and not to mention the fact that he himself said he wants to be a billionaire..and i dont see him achieving that goal unless he goes to a bigger city( LA/NY).
I see the lakers getting either lebron on d.howard when kobe retires…but that will be in like 5/6yrs
Lakers will make magic happen…they always do.

  • Pastorius

I do believe Lebron will be a Laker some time in the next 1-3 years.

There is a reason the Kobe extension is taking so long to negotiate.

When all is said and done, Lebron doesn’t want to play for the Knicks. The Knicks, like the Clippers are a LOSING ORGANIZATION.

The Bulls are also a LOSING ORGANIZATION. Remember Reinsdorf saying, “Organizations win championships. Players don’t win championships.” Well, in the case of the Lakers that is obviously true.

But, the time since Jordan left has proven that that is obviously not true in the case of the Bulls.

Lebron is smart enough to see all of this.

So, he will be a Laker.

Could he play with Kobe? Yes.

Would Kobe fit his ego in with Lebron? That, I don’t know.

I think Lebron would more easily fit, ego-wise, with Kobe than the other way around.

It would be a brilliant matchup in the Triangle offense. So, if they kept Phil around, got Lebron, and kept Kobe, they’d be a team unlike any the gods have ever witnessed.

    • Lakersthe2010Champs

Love to see Lebron in Purple and Gold. But that’s not going to happen if Kobe remains a Laker. It’s simply because of lack of money. There is no possibility for the Lakers to keep the existing crew, while giving Kobe and Lebron both a max contract.

On the other hand, if Lakers win this year, it’s going to be hard to justify parting ways with Kobe. So, two things must happen – Lakers lose the title this year, and Kobe opts out in the summer to be a free agent.

  • Jake

    Check this scenario:

    Sign and Trade

Lebron for Bynum/Artest/Farmar or Brown. I could see Lebronze taking a pay cut to come play with Kobe/Gasol/Odom. Yeah, you lose Bynum — a young guy with good prospects — but you almost guarantee 3 or 4 more rings in the next five seasons. Lebron, Kobe and Gasol as a core? That doesn’t even seem fair.

Is that trade scenario even logistically possible? I know there are a lot of people on here far more knowledgeable about Cap space, ect.

  • drive-for-16th

would people accept lebron in LA though? Where would he rank in terms of competeing against kobe in LA, cause kobe brought us 4 rings and 6 finals appearences, what can lebron do for the lakers. I would only want him in LA if he can go second to kobe being first option till kobe is old and about to hang his jersey up.

  • drive-for-16th

if a miracle can pull this off then lets go for it, i would give up bynum for him in a heart beat and bunch of other scrubs. bynum and sasha adds up money wise, with a couple of piks and shit.

  • 242LakerFan

There’s a word for stories like this: BULLSHIT!
The league would put an expansion team in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in a stadium that seats 500 with one co-ed bathroom before it allows its two best players to both play in L.A.

  • Aqzi

Dear Chris Manning and the authors of the Lakers Nation,
Please, please stop posting ridiculous articles which clearly have not been thought about with any type of analysis. What is the evidence regarding Lebron wanting to be a Laker?

  • keepon_keepinon18

WOW. This article had absolutely nothing to do with LeBron coming to LA. Other than the beginning mention of Phil “loving” Bron, its all about how soap-opera drama-like the relationship between Jerry Buss, Jeanie Buss, Jim Buss, and Phil Jackson. Wow.

Also, why would LeBron come to play for the Lakers? I mean a disadvantage of him playing in Chicago is being in the shadow of MJ. This way, he’d have to play under Kobe’s legacy and, no matter how well he plays better than Kobe the following season in a Laker jersey (if it amazingly happens), Kobe’s slight decline will just be blamed on his age. In other words, there won’t be the competition (media hype) between the two stars.

    • keepon_keepinon18

AND, apparently the whole basis of LeBron WANTING to be a Laker is because he wants to win. I see six teams that have the ability to contend for the championship this year.

Once again, what a terrible article…
“[He] wants to wear the purple and gold. Mainly, he wants to wear a championship ring, which means he wants to play for Lakers coach Phil Jackson.”

  • SD Anthony

I doubt it… I would take Melo in a heartbeat though since this is highly unlikely!

  • David Stern

Foolish mortals! My powers will bring Lebron to New York just like I did Ewing. MWUHAHAHAHA

  • iiTzDanny

Very Unlikely but its nice 2 dream.

  • http://www.michaelserna23.com Michael_23

Is that why Lakers haven’t resigned Kobe yet? There waiting for Lebron James to come over?

    Hahaha. Not gonna happen.

    • http://www.facebook.com/thejahjah Green Flannel

We want the lakers to be successful and if we get Kobe and LeBron we can do wonders. That is what the REAL fans see.
On another note; who doesn’t want to play with the Lakers? Or a championship contender for that matter. i am sure dwade would want to be in purple and gold also. LeBron wants to win and he is smart if the cavs don’t work out (win a ring) then off he goes. To where? We don’t know…

  • LGM10

Wow, didn’t know there was so much DRAMA in the lakers organization. I guess it all makes sense why kobe hasn’t signed an extension. But if phil left for new york to coach lebron, that’d just be WEIRD. One sentence stood out to me though thats true:
“It’s incredible how miserable they seem winning.”
We just can’t seem to accommodate everybody (bynum, the next kareem, hah, yea right); I don’t know if our guys really want to win or if its just the dog days of the long season. Either way, this offseason will be VERY INTERESTING…Will kobe be a laker? Will phil be back? Who will be pg? Will the “jewel” bynum be traded? Will lebron be a laker (haha yea right, more like a pipe dream)? Will byron be the next coach? who knows…..

    • http://www.facebook.com/thejahjah Green Flannel

L.a was made for drama. lol all of it is building up mainly because LBJ hasn’t even made a clue towards where he will go. It is indeed a coincidence kobe hasn’t signed an extension. Like the name where it came from; hoopsHYPE. it is all hype but i just hope everything works out for l.a. i would love for lebron to be the franchise player for the next decade.

  • lakers2000

This is the funniest joke I’ve seen on this site! Let’s get all the good players and make the NBA a joke. LOL. This will not happen.

  • TheLakerGenera11

Oh how we no longer call LeBron foul names but salavate at the opperrunity…well like I said b4 LBJ is a man among boys but I hate how he can do no wrong in the eyes of the media…as if evrything he does has nvr been done, Lebron coming to the Lakers is not probable Kobe wouldn’t have it…when Kobe retires though 5-6 yrs from now LA will make it’s move I’m sure Mitch & Jerry Buss has to think about the product their selling to the ppl n make sure it continues to make revenue.. Who will be the next marque name in a Laker unform life after Kobe is a very serious question that LA and the Laker organization has to figure out…oh and let me be the first to post this so I can take credit: IF KOBE BRYANT WINS 1-2 MORE RINGS HE WILL BE THE FIRST PLAYER SINCE MJ (wait does mj have both #’s retired?) TO HAVE BOTH #8 & 24 RETIRED IN LA…that’s G!

The most mythical article I’ve ever read.

Thank you Cedric Ceballos for giving us Robert Horry and for letting us use your body to Photoshop Lebron’s face on it!

As fairytale as this article sounds, just dreaming about LeBron joining the current squad sounds crazy. Kobe should come first because he’s the boss in LA, that’s fact. LeBron would make one hell of a sidekick tho haha!

    • LC09

okay now that everybody has done da puff puff pass ish lets all wake to reality.. kobe n bron ud kill da league wit this team no one wud stand a chance lmao.. but like i said that was sum good ISH.. too bad it wont happen.. puff puff pass haha

    Jordan & Pippen

get rid of the whole team Kobe and James could beat most teams 2on5……………….lol

  • http://www.singoramalessonsrevealed.com Varick Hudson

Having read the writers entire article I must admit that seemingly there are behind the scenes actions taking place that the average fan just may not be privy to. If this writer is as accurate as his article portends to be, then things are happening with our team that may not be all that great for true Los Angeles Laker Fans.
I remember the days of wondering why Phil Jackson left the Lakers after winning Championships, now I read from this article a possible reason as to why. Although Lebron James is a unique and highly talented Basketball player, and I can appreciate his game as well as I did Michael Jordan, I am not a fan of either and never have been. However, I am a sold out devoted fan of 1 Kobe Bean Bryant, most of all, Phil is my coach and the next superstar to take Kobe’s place once he retires will be 1 Andrew Bynum, not Pau Gasol.
That is how I see it being played out. Quite naturally James may want to put out feelers thinking he could shake up things wherever he pleases because of free agency, it is my opinion however, that he still is not quiet the proven commodity that he thinks he is and therefore would not command the kind of attention Owners like the Buss family even with the Family infighting for position and power the writer writes about in his continued article, that he states is going on with Jeanie Buss, Jim and even Dr Jerry Buss are having. Jeanie Buss he claims is fighting to keep Coach Jackson from leaving and Dr Buss and his son Jim he claims is attempting to run Phil off for Byron Scott after having serenaded Coach Scott in the owners booth during a recent Lakers game disguising it as a meeting to assist the Clippers. The reasons the Buss men don’t want Coach Jackson he says is because they long for the run and gun show time Lakers and Coach Jackson as we all are well aware of is a proponent of the Triangle offense. A much slower gaudier type of offense.
I admit it is disconcerting to learn a lot of this but we must not get lost in the weeds. This Franchise is still one of the Greatest Franchises in sports history if not the greatest and as such demands all that comes with that. I do not see this team going in the way of a Lebron James. Kobe is not Trevor Ariza, and if Coach Jackson is so enthralled and is chomping at the bit to have a Lebron James led team then I would wish him all the best. I did not have a problem when Shaquille O’neal left and that was because we still have Kobe. If that ever changes, and I know that it will not, but if the hand of God makes it so, then it is time for Andrew to take over like Kobe did when he became the Lakers NBA Superstar. It will not however be Lebron James, no matter who is orchestrating the recommendation that he become a member of our Los Angeles Lakers basketball team.

    • LGM10

I agree with u sir but if i had the choice to watch a lebron james play, a guy who guts it out every game and plays with such determination (ala kobe bryant though hes not as deadly) or a (lazy, unmotivated player that cant do whats asked of him) Andrew bynum, I would without hesitation choose for a lebron james to take over and be the next “superstar.” The guy is proving he will be one of the greatest ever; bynum on the other hand is just a guy with so much potential. Will he become that guy? I highly doubt so, could he of course, but so far hes been somewhat overhyped. Of course he’s still really young but we’re talking about lebron james here.

      • http://www.singoramalessonsrevealed.com Varick Hudson

No problem my man, we can agree to disagree, I just want to remind you though, of all of the things that everyone said about Kobe when he came to the Lakers. If you will recall Kobe went through exactly the same things that young Andrew is experiencing now. I’m not trying to convince you or get you to change your mind here. I will only say wait and see, soon Laker fans will see this Guy more than live up to his potential. I see a young Kobe in him. I am that confident in what I see.

  • http://www.singoramalessonsrevealed.com Varick Hudson

I am reminded however of an old saying never to say never. I am reminded of the Lakers trading for and getting Shaquille O’neal, And while he was a Lakers team member he was Okay. After he left no longer was he Okay as a L. A Lakers fan that is how I see this type of rumor. I reserve my above comments with the caveat for the same type of a scenario for Lebron James, if by some act of God he should wear the Lakers Jersey and become a member of our team he would be accepted. I have to remember to never say never, because of how unbelievable I thought it was when the team acquired Shaquille O’neal from the Orlando Magic after the many Great seasons he had with that team. Other wise no thanks to having him join the Lakers out of hand just because he along with a lot of sports writers think that he is the Greatest, and because he wants to be on the Greatest basketball team there is in the game of basketbll where in this Universe Kobe Bean Bryant is King Baller.

    • http://www.myspace.com/guszo gus26

Let me remind YOU.. the lakers signed Shaq they didn’t trade for him.. after reading your first sentence i didn’t even bother with the rest of your comment..

      • http://www.singoramalessonsrevealed.com Varick Hudson

You are absolutely correct there was no trade for Shaquille he was signed by the Lakers in ’96. The word I meant to use was signed so thanks for the correction.

  • http://www.myspace.com/guszo gus26

its not that crazy of an idea… all lebron has to do is tell the cavs he is leaving.. either he goes to NY and they get nothing or they do a sign and trade with the lakers… his first year of his contract will only be worth at the most 17 million.. thats bynum (13), and sasha (18 and expiring contract)… it can happen folks.. we have all seen way more complicated and lopsided trades go down.. in this case its not about a trade.. its the cavs getting something rather than nothing.. getting bynum is a pretty good consilation prize..

  • http://TNL DanG13

Like Biggy said “It was all dream”. lol

Wow! What a waste of my time! Read the whole damned article and there was NOTHING to substantiate LeBrick’s coming to Los Angeles! NOTHING! “Overtures”… wow, that word’s definition was used extremely loosely in this case!

The whole article was more about the power struggle between Jerry Buss/ Jim Buss and Phil Jackson/ Jeanie Buss than about LeBronze coming over. Mother Fcuker… we all should sue for FALSE ADVERTISEMENT!

Get your sh!t together next time before writing this garbage for us man! FCUKIN BULLSH!T!

  • Armen

It’s very possibly, but I do doubt it. A sign and trade would work well. Bynum + filler? maybe some cash too? And at this point Ammo would be out of a contract so tha’ts 5 mill less on the lakers payroll. We’ll just have to wait and see in the offseason. But i do think Kobe and lebron would play good together.

  • King

why would you even post this completely hypothetical scenario… im about to write an article about bosh, wade, and rudy gay coming to the lakes… with not viable sources. and see if i can get it posted on here haha… come on TLN
