ESPN: Mark Cuban has been known as a risk-taker during his tenure as the owner of the Dallas Mavericks. But Cuban won’t risk trading reigning MVP Dirk Nowitzki in an effort to acquire disgruntled Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant.

According to The Dallas Morning News, Cuban said he will not trade Nowitzki, even if it meant he could get Bryant in return. Cuban spoke about the Bryant situation at a North Dallas dance studio, where he was taking a break from rehersals with Kym Johnson, his Dancing With the Stars partner.

“I still haven’t talked to [Lakers owner] Jerry Buss,” Cuban told the newspaper. “So until that happens, nothing can happen.”

The Mavericks were an NBA-best 67-15 last season, but were shocked in the first round of the playoffs by the Golden State Warriors and lost the series 4-2. Dallas made minor adjustments to its roster since that loss, including signing veteran guard Eddie Jones and trading for the defensive-minded Trenton Hassell, but Cuban has otherwise kept his team in tact.

“If and when I talk to Jerry, I’ll make it clear that we’re not going to trade Dirk,” Cuban told the newspaper. “And we’re not going to dismantle our team. Kobe’s one of the top players in the league. But without the right team around him, he’s in the same position he was in Los Angeles.

Hm . . . well even if there was a trade for kobe without including Dirk, it would be not hard to pull off actually with amount of talent dallas has.

Josh Howard, Devin Haris, and even savy vet Jerry Stackhouse would be a something to look at but not a must have trade but it does have some value to it.

I have said it once and i will say it again. The only way to get value for kobe, will be through a three way deal.

… And in other news – the Dallas Mavericks have dropped out of the Kobe Bryant sweepstakes.

Actually, trading Kobe for Dirk straight up would be the best thing Cuban could ever do for his team, in terms of winning (I think it would be a PR problem for a while though).

Trading his young talent, IMO, would be worse. The thing is Dallas is already on the brink. Swapping Kobe for Dirk would keep the gist of the team and throw them over the top. Trading away young talent would be creating a new core of Kobe & Dirk, which would certainly be a great one-two punch but might not be as potent of a team.

Having said this, I would NOT want Dirk. If we’re trading Kobe then I don’t want anyone like Dirk who’s in their prime… perhaps a secondary guy like Lamar but why trade the best for a second best? It’s a step backwards.

For Cuban to say he wouldn’t trade Kobe, and assuming he’s telling the truth, is both a great thing for the lakers and a slap in the face at the same time.

    I posted a related link.

Basically, Mavs have “contacted Buss” about Bryant. But no Dirk, no Kobe.

    No Dirk, no deal.
