G-Small made a good point about Artest being a Kobe fan despite the only 1 year age difference:

When Artest was a senior in high school Kobe was a rookie in the NBA. Chances are he owned his jersey. What high school senior basketball player wasn’t a Kobe Bryant fan his rookie year?

Who can forget the way Magic hugged Kareem his rookie season after the first game winner? Earvin obviously had stars in his eyes over a player he too grew up watching.
