Phil: Kobe screwed up the game

Definitely uninspiring play from the Lakers but you can’t blame Kobe for putting in work when no one else was doing anything.

ESPN: “We get behind early on in the third quarter on some stupid plays — poor passing, poor transition defense — and then Kobe has to screw up the game and start energizing the team by going one-on-one and that takes the rest of the guys out as a consequence,” Jackson said. “That didn’t bring us back in, but it did give us a little run, we got the game back a little bit but we couldn’t sustain it and we just went right back and made the same mistakes again.”

  • RoyTheGreatestAsshole

My asshole screwed the game.. no really i am telling the truth.

Come on Phil,we know u are leaving next year, but did u think this year u can take time off..

Get on with ur job and u will see how and why the triangle is not working and how bad we are playing on D
Yes kobe has a hand in the way we are playing badly , but in this game it was his and the rest of the teams D ..

    • BEN

I THINK KOBE HAS TO REALIZE THAT NOT ONLY IS ONE ON ONE NOT THE WAY TO KEEP YOUR TEAM INVOLVED, HUNGRY, AND TUNED UP. HE HAS TO EVOLVE HIS STYLE TO HIS AGE. HE CAN BE BETTER THAN HE AS EVER BEEN AS A TEAM PLAYER. HIS ONE ON ONE DAYS ARE OVER. YES HE CAN BEAT GUYS SOMETIMES BUT EVEN LONELY MEMPHIS CAN BEAT GREAT TEAMS SOMETIMES. GREAT MOVES ARE ONLY VALUED IF CONSISTENTLY SUCCESSFUL.
IF YOU LOOK AT MICHAEL JORDAN’S LATER YEARS AND ALL PLAYERS THAT REMAINED GREAT! THEY DEFERRED TO THEIR TEAM, MAKING THEM DEADLIER THAN EVER!
KOBE NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO CONSISTENTLY GET OPEN WITH OUT THE BALL. I STILL WANT HIM SHOOTING LAST SHOT BUT NOT CREATING LAST SHOT!!!

  • keeponkeepinon18

At that specific moment, it looked like only Drew and Kobe were the only ones looking to score.

  • 151RUMMER

I have a feeling this is going to b a long season……and not in a good way!!!!!!

  • 242LakerFan

I’m sorry, Phil, but you said it yourself. Kobe made those runs that got us back within range, then when the rest of the team was called on to get over the hump, it was back to the same silly mistakes and sloppy play. Kobe and Drew have been the only ones putting in a serious effort, plus Pau when he gets the ball, yet the ball doesn’t get into the post for long stretches at a time. The triangle is supposed to feed the post regularly. This this team hasn’t run the offense consistently for the past month or more. That’s not Kobe’s fault.

    • roscoe

He didn’t mean Kobe screwed up the game in a negative connotation, this quote is taken completely out of context. He meant Kobe hijacked the game plan because no one was performing right and he had to create a spark but it didn’t catch. he wasn’t blaming Kobe.

  • 8plus24=magic

I agree 151rummer , I believe the locker room is in a shambles . its like ever time kobe takes over 20 shots certain players on the team take it as an opportunity to use that as an excuse ie paul gasol, what happened in the games aginst milwaukee kobe took 16 shots and they still lost by 20? the christmas game same thing kobe shot 16 times they lose by 15? I whatched the game last nite and kobe only took 6 shots by the half and we were down by 9 kobe shots us back in the contest and we where down 1 lamar goes to the freethrow line and misses both. wtf?

  • Lakers 24 7

Kobe didn’t screw the game up, THE LAKERS screwed the game up. The only reason Kobe took over the game was because the Lakers were playing like trash. Even if Kobe was the only one scoring, where was the TEAM effort on defense? Kobe got us back within 2 points, but the Lakers let the Grizzlies get easy baskets. I guess it’s all Kobe’s fault for all the recent losing streaks, right?

If Phil would get up and actually COACH once in a while, maybe we’d win. He’s even said himself that his coaching staff does all the work, yet we pay this dude millions to sit his ass on the sideline and call out a few plays.

..then again, Phil could just be playing “mind games”.

  • 8plus24=magic

    Great post 242lakerfan. I agree

  • Laker Warrior

Phil the Coaching is a pIle of shit. No ball movement,
the biggs post up and Arrtest Kobe shot outside shots.
The d fense or lack of. Arrtest is a expermint gone wrong. Play Barnes already. And Fisher move s so slow its like a slo mo film. This teams sucks no effort.
Thats Phils fault . Go retire already ,

  • daboss1848

Am I the only that reads this as sarcasm . . . KB screwed up by ENERGIZING the team – in other words, everyone is screwing up and Kobe has to ruin that streak (of everyone messing up) by making a mini run

    • Deemac1

Thanku Boss, I was wondering if any1 else read that was sacrcism by PJ!

    • James

      u right boss

  • lakers_The_Truth

Kobe is just frustrated. When your coworkers do nothing you always feel you need to take over their duties.
    Normal human reaction.
PJ needs to fire the rest of the team to play ball and make effort to win these games. While it’s nice to know we have the talent to turn around, we need to build momentum and move into the playoffs looking good. HCA doesn’t hurt.
Come on it;s time to wake up and build a 10 win streak or something.

  • 8plus24=magic

About a week ago john hollinger a known kobe& laker hater himself said that kobe is not the problem, now you know when he (john h.) says that kobe is not the problem thats saying alot.

  • atlfan

Win as a team, lose as a team. Stu Lantz even said Kobe was doing too much last night. At the point when Kobe “took over” they weren’t being blown out. Their offense wasn’t the problem. Gasol taking 4 shots in the second half is unacceptable. He does have to demand the ball and be aggressive when he gets it but I noticed that his teammates stopped looking for him. I don’t want Kobe to try to bail them out anymore. They need to pinpoint the problem(s) and make trades if necessary. Neither Kobe or coaching is the issue. I don’t think they take these regular season games seriously anymore. Listen to their reactions to losses.

  • docholidae

Phil was being very sarcastic, if i read this correctly. basically the team was doing terrible and Kobe ruined them being able to see it by well being Kobe and hiding the flaws. i didnt see the game so i could be wrong but that is how i took it

  • lakers0828

Hearing Bynum Last Night I have to Agree man and I honestly think this Cocky arrogance that the Lakers carry with them will finally catch up to them and the wont make the finals this yr or 3peat

  • bitterfan

Yeah you tell him Phil and while you’re at it, summon him to play defense!!!

Kobe is a bum and selfish!!!

  • xtro

i think they need to trade to energize the team.

  • Likwidsage

I love phil and his sarcasm.
In essence he said “We played poor but then kobe had to ruin the game by bringing us back in it.” What does it sound like? Get a clue people.

  • http://www.jackyang.info Jack

I didn’t watch the questions asked on video but from reading it, it does sound like sarcasm (like Likwidsage said) XD. It did seem at that point that Bynum and Kobe were the only bright spots. I guess we’ll have to be “patient”.

  • DCLakeshow

I watched the clip over and over again, and I honestly can’t tell whether or not Phil’s being sarcastic. Don’t know if he’s trying to say Kobe energized our players or theirs. WITH THAT SAID…I’m not understanding something. Kobe’s a scorer. Point blank. In the past, he’s been very good at playing defense, passing to “trusted” teammates, and being an all around great player. BUT he’s a scorer. So…why is everyone shocked now, when Pau isn’t demanding the ball or taking shots when he gets it, Artest is using the, “I’m busy playing defense” excuse, and Lamar is being…well..he’s being Lamar? Seriously. Kobe has never hidden the fact that he’s a scorer and a competitor, so why try to make him something he’s not at this point in his career. PHIL…if you want him to not take so many shots, tell the rest of the players to take shots…and make them. It’s that simple. If Pau ever wants to be in the same conversation as Duncan, or (forgive me) KG, he’ll have to demand the damn ball and impose his will.

  • Drive-for-17th

Phil needs to start doing some damn coaching now. This team is slowly falling apart, he needs to stop giving them days off. Is it just me or does Shannon Brown take to many long jumpers, the hogs the ball too long, and can’t dribble worth shit, Phil needs to let his guards know, you can’t fuck around and take contested, horrible shots when we’re down, and WHERE THE FUKK IS ARTEST, the guy hasen’t showed up all season, OUR STARTING SF ON BACK TO BACK CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM GIVES US 0 POINTS, WTF. They have get their shit togther but i guess it easy said then done.

    • rome

yr right rons playing like hes satisfied with one ring
always a great player but no fire this year that also goes for everyone else.I was sorry to see Sasha go he was slumping but when he was out there he gave it his all and he always got under the skin of his opponite the lakers need someone to open it up (NASH) and a blue collar big that can use and bruise with all 6 fouls and block shots the lakers have lots of talent but the offense is clogged the lakers need to start running and open it up lakers need apenatrating point and put fish in blakes role. dont take this wrong fish the lakers would not have ever came back to elite status if you didnt come back but everyone in the west has figured the lakers out. they need to make a big move like trade for CP3 or borrow nash and three pete but it aint going to happen the way its going! PS nobody is better than Kobe ! to all the media can you wait untill lebron wins at least one before you crown him again and again

  • 123kid

kobe did screw up the game. stu was right when he said that if kobe kept doing his thing and not involving the rest of the guys, that they would cool down more and more. when kobe sat down, then they wouldnt have any one else scoring. i knew when kobe kept jacking up shot after shot in the 3rd, then the rest of the guys would just shut down. same thing happened in the san antonio game. kobe jacked up all these shots in the 1st and the same results happened. when kobe takes shot after shot, his shot gets flatter and then additionally he has to play defense, thus leading to bad passes and bad decision making. when kobe does that, then everyone just stands and watches and gets colder. its not rocket science, we have the players to win, we have the skill to win, and we have a great coach to win. the only issue is, no team ball. anyone can have motivation to say they wanna win, but if they dont actually go out there to win, then its the end of the story. for example, in my mind i can say i am motivated to go exercise, but if i dont actually get off my butt to do it, then it means nothing.

  • 151RUMMER

Everyone knows why weve struggled lately right??????? We never should have traded Sasha………
    Now thats sarcasm!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lakersallthewayy

its not kobes fault, no one else made a shot so thats what he was there for. I understand that changed up te way the rest of play but hey when ur down by that much someone NEEDs to do what kobe did in order to win but no one else contributed afterr

  • SHOWTIME4EVA

leave it Kobe to mess up perfectly bad playing.

  • Likwidsage

If one man is doing all the offensive work then the other 4 should be doing atleast some defensive work. Otherwise why are they there? That’s the problem with critics. They don’t look at the big issue. Defense is what failed us. If you have to let people shoot over and over again to get into rhythm, then the team is gonna fail for sure. What are bench players supposed to do then? They should be excused too then. It’s ok if they blow 20 point leads because they couldn’t get warmed up…right? I’m afraid that’s not how it works. If you’re numbers is called, nut up or shut up.

  • ONLY KINGS

IT WASN’T KOBE THAT PREVENTED RON ARTEST FROM SCORING THE ENTIRE GAME! IT WASN’T KOBE THAT DIDN’T BOX OUT AND GRAB REBOUNDS! KOBE WAS PART OF NOT GETTING BACK ON DEFENSE, AS WAS THE ENTIRE TEAM! THAT OPENING RUN BY MEMPHIS IN THE 3RD QUARTER WAS SIMPLY PATHETIC! KOBE PLAYS THE “WE GOT ‘EM ALOT OF TACOS” CARD, YEAH WE APPRECIATE THE TACOS, BUT WE APRECIATE EFFORT MORE! LOSSES ARE LOSSES! LOSSES WITHOUT EFFORT ARE BULLSHIT! ————– http://bit.ly/a6iLTr

  • YOUR WARLOCK

Gasol has to shut up while he “Mans Up” and not vice versa… He is invisible as he is disrespected by the opposition while they attack the rim–under his watch–with absolutely no fear! …Cowardly he then whines to Phil, the refs, the media, etc, etc, etc, when he’s a no show on offense… I just hate to witness such a marshmallow of a player! …Kobe simply attacks relentlessly, but sadly does this all by himself, Andrew being one of the few exceptions these days… It is not Kobe’s fault if others simply choose to be soft and irrelevant instead of attacking along side him… These days Gasol is softer than ever before, and that is hard to do even in the WNBA of his world.

  • Ralph Hidalgo

Here we go again. Kobe being selfish and Phill blaming everybody but him. If Kobe is not doing what he’s being told call a freaking time out and bench him. C’mon.
All true Lakers fan are embarrasing how they way they
‘re playing. We have support it you and we will continue but if you don’t play with heart you will get the BOOOOOOO’s you guys deserve.
Can anyone tell Artest the season has already started please.

  • Poemnine

I’ll tell you what! As you know this is a team game, everyone must trust on each other instead of blaming. No time left now and make all yourself communicate each other. Discuss each other every second in the game like real brothers. Utilize your time. If you don’t like each other or mad each other, your result will be failed for sure. Lakers team is not a bad team. Lakers are world champion. You all must have selfesteem, confident, make every effort, and trust each other. If you guys want to win, you’ll win, if you are depressing what you’ve lost, you’ll not win the game. Lakers coach has experienced in many finals as well as players have. So, make sure be organized the team, everyone must participate and then you will achieve definitely for sure. Trust me!

  • a non

I need to watch Phil’s last game today.
