ESPN SportsNation is holding a poll that currently has over 39,000 votes. The Question: Who is the best basketball player in the world right now?

The players to choose from are Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dirk Nowitzki, Derrick Rose, or other.

Kobe Bryant leads the vote around the nation, and around the globe.

Here are the results as of Tuesday evening:

Kobe Bryant 32%
Dirk Nowitzki 28%
LeBron James 17%

Scott Howard Cooper from NBA.Com reported that Dwight Howard has said he will definitely become a free agent rather than sign an extension.

Howard was asked what he has spoke to upper management about:

“I just told them, ‘We’ve got to have guys who are going to play hard 48 minutes and who are going to battle the other team, who are going to fight night in and night out for a championship,’ ” he said.

So what will happen if the Magic don’t win the championship in 2012, and the roster stays the same?

“At the end of the day, as far as what I want to accomplish as a basketball player, to be one of the greats, you have to win championships,” he said. “That’s how I see it. I want to do that in Orlando, and hopefully we can get it done…. Everybody’s asking me from the beginning of the season until today where am I playing in a year? Am I getting traded? I have no clue. As of right now, I want to be in Orlando.” Howard said.

Regardless if Howard wants to stay in Orlando it will ultimately be up to management.

If the Magic’s front office cannot improve the roster to Howard’s liking, they may look to trade the All-Star center before they possibly see him leave in the Summer of 2012 for nothing.

Ron Artest has had some memorable moments on the Jimmy Kimmel Show including appearing on the show wearing nothing but boxers, and showing up to one of the interviews wearing a cowboy hat and a fake beard.

This time however, Kimmel decided to pull a prank on Ron-Ron.

Artest filmed what he thought was a PSA for an animal’s rights charity called, “Critters United”.

Have a few laughs by checking out the video below:

While many in the Los Angeles sports world have been miffed at Laker star Kobe Bryant’s unwillingness to address the Mike Brown hiring publicly, the other captain of the Purple and Gold will reportedly get some face time with the teams’ new head coach. Accroding to ESPN Los Angeles,  Lakers co-captain Derek Fisher, took a break from the negotiating table with NBA executives in trying to hammer out a new collective bargaining agreement, and flew back to Los Angeles to have dinner with new Lakers coach, Mike Brown.

Fisher, Matt Barnes and Pau Gasol are the only members of the Lakers to date who have commented on the hire, with Fisher tweeting: “…Will miss Phil but excited to start a new chapter under Mike Brown. Looking forward to a different style and energy!!”

Glen Rice knows Kobe Bryant. In fact, he won a title with Kobe and the Lakers in 2000. Rice had high praise for his former teammate when asked about his thoughts about MJ/LeBron comparisons.

“There’s no way. Michael Jordan’s the best player ever, come on. LeBron’s a great player, I’m not trying to take anything from him. But you talk about someone who had the will to not only take over a game, but to bring his teammates up to another level? Michael Jordan, hand’s down. It’s not even close. And if there is someone close, it’s not LeBron, it would be Kobe Bryant.”

What are your thoughts on this highly debated subject?

Matt Barnes posted on his twitter that he is getting an MRI done on his knee. We’ll keep you updated with his results!

Courtesy Trey Kerby from Basketball Jones, a billboard was spotted in J.J. Barea’s hometown of Puerto Rico, and according to “Bethlehem Says” translates to the following:

Only my ribs hurt, but for Kobe, it’s his ego”.

Although it looks as if they quoted Barea, it is not known if he has any knowledge of the billboard. One would think any quote from Barea would be directed towards Andrew Bynum, who actually delivered the blow to Barea’s ribs in Game 4 of the Western Conference semi-finals.

However in Puerto Rico, Kobe Bryant is most likely a more common name than Andrew Bynum.

Mike Brown continues his media tour around Los Angeles, after being named the new Lakers head coach.

Brown joined “Lopez Tonight”, on TBS, Tuesday night (Watch the entire interview below):

Brown talked about many things including getting it done on the defense end of the floor, his hunger to win a ring, and why he likes the fact that he is inheriting a team that underachieved this season:

I’m excited about taking this team over, because these guys are used to playing [in the NBA Finals]! They’re not.” Brown said. They are angry men right now, and I rather have a group of angry men that have a point to prove not only to themselves but to all these lovely fans in LA, that ‘Hey, we ended our season too early!”

There have been many reports stating that the Warriors have discussed potential trades involving guard Monta Ellis.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Warriors have discussed a deal with the Lakers as well:

League sources said the Warriors also have discussed Ellis, among a variety of other players, in trade talks with Atlanta, Chicago, Memphis, Orlando and the Lakers. Executive board member Jerry West said at his opening news conference last month that the Warriors needed to be willing to take risks, and the most obvious gamble would be breaking up the back court of Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry.

Ellis led Golden State in scoring this season with 24.1 points per game. The strongest rumor thus far has been Monta Ellis to the Philadelphia 76ers for Andre Iguodola, as it looks like the Warriors want to break up the Ellis-Curry combo.

“I love to watch them play,” West said of the Ellis-Curry combo. “They’re so much fun to watch play. But at the end of the day, you want to win.”

Ellis was named the NBA’s most improved player in 2006-07, and signed a 6 year, 66 million dollar deal back in 2008.

Jose Calderon mentioned in a Spanish interview that he’d like to play for the Lakers when asked what team he’d like to play for:

“Obviously everybody would like to play for Boston or the Lakers, because apart from being two of the best teams, everything around them is amazing. When you watch that, you’re like, “How cool!” But you’ve got to realize that it’s difficult to get a spot there.”

Jose Calderon has played all six of his seasons with the Toronto Raptors. Calderon, has career averages of 9.8 points, 7.0 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game. Calderon in his career shoots 49% from the field and makes 38% of his three pointers.

Calderon has worn out his time in Toronto, but is not so cheap when you look at his annual salary. ($9.7 million next season and $10.5 million in 2012-13)

He also has ties with Pau Gasol as they played on the Spanish national team together, and has said in the past he would like to play with Gasol in the NBA.

With the Lakers off to a poor start, trade rumors have begun to swirl around Kobe Bryant, leading many to speculate if he'll leave for greener pastures. Kobe puts those rumors to rest in his interview with Yahoo Sports.
