The NBA GMs were once again surveyed, this time the NBA GMs give their take on the NBA’s Top Defenders. The results were outstanding, to see Kobe and Ron get this much praise from the GMs of the NBA should bring a smile to your face knowing the Lakers have the top defenders on the team. Without further ado, here are the results:

Who is the best defensive player in the NBA?
1. Dwight Howard, Orlando 77.8%
2. Ron Artest, L.A. Lakers 7.4%
2. Kobe Bryant, L.A. Lakers 7.4%

Who is the best perimeter defender in the NBA?
1. Kobe Bryant, L.A. Lakers 35.7%
2. Ron Artest, L.A. Lakers 21.4%
3. Rajon Rondo, Boston 17.9%

Who is the best on-the-ball defender in the NBA?

2. Kobe Bryant, L.A. Lakers 17.9%
3. Ron Artest, L.A. Lakers 14.3%

Which is the best defensive team in the NBA?
1. Boston 75.0%
2. L.A. Lakers 10.7%
3. Orlando 7.1%

Who is the toughest player in the NBA?
1. Ron Artest, L.A. Lakers 37.0%
2. Kobe Bryant, L.A. Lakers 18.5%
3. Dwight Howard, Orlando 7.4%

If you’re not still not convinced, here is a testimony from Carmelo Anthony himself about Ron Ron’s D.

Bare in mind, GMs were not permitted to vote for their own teams/players, so the other 29 GMs picking Kobe and Ron says a lot about who these 2 players are as defenders.

    cant teach toughness…..

  • Robert.

Where is the 3 headed monster in this survey?
right — not the top 3
    Ron-Ron – DPOY 2004 (and All D for a decade), Kobe – All D for a DECADE (first team)
BTW, this is where Kobe shines over MJ. His D is quite stellar. As for LePowderPuff? His D is behind the back blocks of layups (not face up). … chick–en … can’t face up to his opponent.

    • Jack Y.

Well. One thing a lot of people thinks Lebron and Dwade defend well. In reality, they appear to “defend well” on the passing lanes. What that means is they gamble a lot on defense. When they succeed in gambling, they look good in highlight plays. This also gets them better stats in steals and blocks. This doesn’t mean they can defend well consistently! =P

    • Robert.

Agree. DWade is a ‘stealer’, LBJ is an occasional ‘run from behind’ shot blocker. Both are elements of defense (and, there were many instances during the past few years in which DWade was the ‘leading’ stealer in the league), but looking at statistics, let’s say he has 1, 2 or 3 steals per game (3 is pretty high, as an average). That is ‘just’ 3 turnovers ‘at most’. Generally it’s a little over ‘1’ steal on average. Not really a ‘big contribution’ defensively, but can be useful.
Same with LBJ’s blocks. Probably ‘less than’ 1 block per game on average. Just a few cool looking blocks for the highlight reel, that’s all. He’s not a defensive juggernaut.
Whereas Ron-Ron ‘shut down’ Carmelo. I believe he kept him from scoring ‘at least’ 10 points, and that’s just Carmelo. He shuts down defenders with face up defense. Same with Kobe. It can be responsible for ’10s’ of points, not 2-4 points in the differential.

    • Cncaliguy09

MJ was one of the best perimeter defenders. 9 time first defense team straight. He would’ve gotten the most if he didn’t retire so many times. MJ is only bested by Pippen, Micheel Copper, Mo Cheeks and Derrick Johnson. Watch some basketball games over then the Lakers games.

THATS funny, the mamamaba hasn`t played defense in years.if they are talking dirty,he`s there.everyoe lights up the bad…when the cameras on him he tries.

    • 242LakerFan

You’re still having that stuttering problem, huh? Don’t worry, it’ll probably get better once your testicles drop.

    • 242LakerFan

BTW I like your little theory about the cameras. The thing is, every single NBA game has been televised (using cameras) since he’s been in the league, which is probably where he gets the reputation as one of the top defenders in the NBA.
Don’t you ever get tired of being wrong?

      • DCLakeshow

CORRECTION: Not all prison games are televised.

i agree with 242LakerFan aren’t you tired of being wrong.
I havent seen a single post where u made any sense. Give it up we are all tired of your stupid posts. Get your facts right. So all the NBA gm’s dont know sh8 and u do?
Isnt it Lebrick that poses for cameras and plays stupid games with his teammates in front of the cameras.
We get it u dont like Kobe but the FACT is that he has been the best player in this league for the past decade.
    What have u done idiot?

  • Laffs at laffs atu

Oh by the way the torch will be passed on to a kid name Kevin Durant and not Lehipe. Now thats a FACT!

  • El Caliente

Kobe is the most overrated defender to ever play the game!!!

    • Kobe4life

El Caliente is the biggest retard to ever touch a key board!

  • keeponkeepinon18

The Lakers might not be known as a defensive team as much as the Celtics but it should be known that their defense exceeded the Celtics’ defense at times in the Finals. Its interesting that for the last question, Boston was voted 75% as the best defensive team and the Lakers only 10.7%. I think Boston definitely wins this question (due to their name as a defensive team at all times) but numbers should have been closer to 55% Celtics and 25% Lakers.

  • Lakers 24 7

Perfect for the Kobe haters and LeBron riders who say LeBron is a better defender. Just because LeBron chases down a couple point guards and gets a block or two doesn’t mean he has the ability to play one-on-one perimeter defense. FUCK AROUND AND GET LOCK’D DOWN FUCKIN’ WITH THE MAMBA, SON!

  • Robert.

Recall that the Celtics no longer have Thibodeau as the defensive coordinator. He was probably the central reason that the Celtics did so well ‘defensively’ in the last few years (esp. 2008). I think he even taught them how to ‘cheat’ (attempt moving screens, illegal blocks, foul without letting the ref’s detect it). It worked in 2008, when the refs looked the other way while KG was ‘constantly’ moving on screens.
They probably learned a lot from Thib., but now don’t have the same defensive coach.

    • daboss1848

does that mean they forgot everything they learned?

what happened when lakers lost their “defensive coordinator”? (clue: circular object goes on a digit)

    • Robert.

yeah, I didn’t say they would ‘forget’ everything they learned. But, if they only needed to be taught something once, and everything was ok after that, why would they need to keep employing a defensive coach? In fact, if players were that good that they could employ what is taught to them instantly, and instantly master it without further supervision, then who would need coaches? Just have them watch a video, get a book, or something.
I’m sure any coach has to keep pointing out how a player can improve, or employ his teachings ‘constantly’. I’m sure they watch hours of video, etc. So now that Thibodeau is gone, the new defensive coach will probably have a different method for defense. That alone can change how they play defense. Any one of the players could say, “well, that’s not what Thibodeau taught us”, and there you have it.
But I’m sure it won’t be the same. Also, pay close attention to Chicago – let’s see how that team plays defense from now on.

      • daboss1848

savvy vet squad – loss of thibs should have little effect . . . they were off all yr, and turned it on in POs

    UM, ER! WHERE’S THE KING?!? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

  • JOSH IN DA 310

It’s funny that these moronic Laker/Kobe haters see the facts in front of their fat fukin faces and still dont comprehend. These guys are idiots and I get a kick reading their posts. Kobe is #1 and if coaches and Gm’s all say the same who are we to argue against?? They’re the Pros and we’re just fans, but Laffs Atu is simply a piece of shit! LMFAO @ Laffs ATu, thanks for being a cunt

  • Cncaliguy09

Tru laker fan and I’m saying Kobe is a horrible defender these days so I wonder who they talked too. Gerald Wallace is the best wing defender. Wade is better and so is Igoudala. Kobe repeated gets blown up by all opposing players who can get in the lane only to run into Laker bigs that bail out Kobe or open shots.

The rookie in Utah Hayworth got off on Kobe. Sac evans got 19 and thorton 33. SA bench gaurds all got double digits. HArden sef on thunder combined for 25.Opposing players score 4-6 more poitns than their scoring average when Kobe guards them. Average players look like allstars scoring 20+ points on Kobe like wesley johnson of the Timberwovles.
