There has been much debate over who is the team of the decade. Recently Mark Stein of ESPN ranked the Spurs as the team of the decade. His reasoning?

ESPN: It’s not an easy trick to pick the Spurs here after they lost four of their five playoff showdowns with the Lakers in the 2000’s … but we’re doing it anyway.

Now, despite being a Lakers website, I want to hear your thoughts Lakers Nation!

Here are some things to think about…

  • Lakers won 4 titles
  • Spurs won 3
  • We beat them 4 out of 5 times in the playoffs
  • We defended a title, successfully, twice (including a 3-peat)
  • Spurs never won back-2-back
  • SamV

YA RIGHT! It’s a no brainer, the lakers are the team of the decade hands down. I’m happy there is no official award because espn has it wrong for sure. The most prolific one-two punch, 4 titles, a 3 peat, and more finals appearances as well. How can you call the spurs the team of the decade when the team you are pitting them against beat them 4/5 times? It makes no sense. Lake Show, hands down

  • gugy

While the Spurs had a great team, but the Lakers is definitely the team of the decade.

Well, is well know ESPN doesn’t like the Lakers. So many of their writers are haters.
    F•ck them.

  • Pourky

That’s ESPN for ya…of course they will always do their best to take credit away from L.A. Lakers.

That’s why I don’t really care what ESPN’s opinion is because of the cold hars facts available to the world, plain and simple.

  • daboss1848

you guys would be best served to read the whole article b4 resorting to the easy to write “espn hates us” line

  • The Mamba24

I think its coz the Lakers missed the playoffs once and the Spurs were always a 50+ win team. I think that’s what it boiled down to.

    • SamV

It shouldn’t boil down to the number of 50+ win seasons. Greatness is defined by titles not consistency. Look at the Boston Celtics. They disappeared YEARS and are still considered one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) NBA franchises of all time. The spurs were the most consistent team of the decade and that’s it.

      • mr.laker19

How is this for consistency, the Lakers are the only team to reach the NBA finals in every decade since the NBA existed. THATS relevant.

      • http://LakersNation Marwan..

Hey I read an article on that ranks the best franchises in NBA history, all 30 of them.
        #1 Lakers
        #2 Celtics
        #3 Spurs
        #4 Bulls
        #5 Suns
        #6 76ers
        #7 Jazz
        #8 Blazers
        #9 Pacers
        #10 Rockets
        #11 Bucks
        #12 Thunder
        #13 Pistons
        #14 Heat
        #15 Magic
        #16 Knicks
        #17 Mavericks
        #18 Nuggets
        #19 Cavaliers
        #20 Warriors
        #21 Nets
        #22 Hawks
        #23 Wizards
        #24 Hornets
        #25 Kings
        #26 Timberwolves
        #27 Raptors
        #28 Bobcats
        #29 Clippers
        #30 Grizzlies

Spurs can take “franchise of the decade” and Lakers can take best franchise in NBA history, I can live with that.

  • lakers0828

The Lakers to me are hands down team of the Decade I mean how can u not Say they are yeah the spurs won titles but think of this the Lakers were the only team of this decade to repeat and the spurs were never able to repeat to Me its Hands down to Lakers and I also think Espn are a bunch of Laker haters there writers are all celtic fans except for J A Adande other then that Marc Stein is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WRong

  • Kid Kaos 310

    Great article non the less

  • pauer

didnt the spurs win the title in the half season? does that even fully count as a title?

    • 007

exactly. the coach of the decade (heck, the best coach of all time) even jabbed at the spurs and said that title should have an *(asterisk) next to it. lol

  • Lakers 24 7

Probably because the Spurs were able to keep their core players throughout most of the decade.

  • Trem

Bullshit. I read the article and I completely disagree

  • 007

Last night TNT said we are the only team who has played a game every christmas for this entire decade. hmmm…. now why would they schedule it like that?… maybe because we’re the most exciting!!

  • mr.laker19

Not to mention 6 total nba finals appearances and we started and ended the decade with champisonships whcih shows relevance throughout. Also two different MVP;s, A player who broke numerous scoring records and a coach who reached 10 total titles. Like WTF??? How is this even a question? Spurs didnt even repeat! Get the hell outta here wit dat bull, unbiasly its the Lakers. We were in the Finals over half the damm decade! ESPN does hate the lakers.

  • thanhttrinh

ya know ESPN is the most haters, too many wrong articles, thats why i dont care what they said, it looks like the Celdicks fans talking crap, hahaha haters

  • Jimmy

I think Stein just wanted a lot of hits on his article, smart move.

    • desecrator93

  • KING

    Fukk that

  • http://57.amklac laffs atu

    the truth hurts.

    • SamV

having to read your comments hurt more

    • http://LakersNation Marwan..

I laffs atu when I read you comments, insist on being a Kobe hater.

  • thanhttrinh

the haters are worrying about LA would be pass Celdicks’ franchise for the next multiple years
why ? because we are the greatest team at this period right now, the greatest coach, greatest player in the world, the most franchise in the NBA history, srr u should accept the fact !

  • BE_A_LakerFan

That is just pure hate.. that’s all it is. Then to say “we’re doing it anyway”. Almost as if to say, we know the Lakers are better but we’ll just pick the Spurs just because… gtfoh with that. Smh.

  • DickChoke

Bottom line is the Spurs never won a championship when the Lakers were at their peak. Only when the Lakers were out of the way could the Spurs win. You also have to take into account that the Lakers have been to the Finals two more times than San Antonio.

  • thanhttrinh

the Spurs cannot get back to the finals till Kobe would getting retire, however Houston, Denver are the hot teams in the West now…they gotta through those teams first
with the fact that Tim Duncan is getting older, Tony Parker, Manu, they cannot compete agaisnt the West not even against us, this is the 09-10 season, not the past few years
i mean, guys…no team can stop us at this period !

  • http://LakersNation Marwan..

Guys do you know how lucky we are to have Shannon. I mean Lakers originally traded for Morrison but Brown was a throw in, since the Bobcats wanted to get rid of their salary cap. Wow, lucky we got Brown though, he is the one that is contributing. I feel sorry for Morrison though, he had a great career til that ACL killed his knee, and he never recovered from it (mentally though, his knee is fine). He was a hot shooter before the injury, hes lost it now. I hope he picks it up before the trade deadline, I would love to have a pure shooter on the team. He did show a glimpse of what he can do in the season opener against Clippers going 4-4 from 3 pointers. We need that Adam Morrison, consistently.

  • http://LakersNation Marwan..

Kobe shows why hes a great leader.

After the Lakers’ 110-99 win over the New Orleans Hornets, Kobe Bryant talks about the way he encourages reserve small forward Adam Morrison.

Reporter: “I saw you jump up off the bench pretty animated when Morrison made that left handed layup. Is that just a reaction to seeing a guy that doesnt get his minutes produce or just being excited?”

Kobe: “No. Its me encouraging him and reminding him that I want him to do what he does best, which is score. You know, defensively we’ll provide help for him and certain areas he’ll put forth the effort defensively that we need from him, but on the offensive end we try to put guys in situations to maximize their potential. You know, we’re not gonna ask them to go out there and be you know, Lamar Odom, facilitate and everything. Thats not what he does best”

  • willmo

It’s no surprise to anyone that ESPN would pull this kind of crap. Kudos to the Spurs for being consistent, but the Lakers are the draw of the NBA. Shaq and Kobe 3 peat and now with this new Dynasty no one can stop us and it’s killing the main media like ESPN and the likes. ESPN’s dream is to have Lebron be the center of attention 24/7 and it’s so obvious this year that Kobe will win the MVP barring any major injury. The Spurs aren’t even relevant in the West anymore. They can’t beat the best teams in the league which used to be their trade mark. Had the Lakers had a competitive team 05-07 Kobe would have won 2 more MVP’s.
