Magic is entitled to his opinion whether we agree or not.

L.A. Times: Magic Johnson knows why the Lakers are off to an 8-0 start.

“Thanks to Miami,” the Lakers legend said, smiling in a corridor underneath Staples Center on Tuesday.

Johnson said owner Jerry Buss decided to spend money this off-season when it became apparent the Miami Heat would try to become a power team by adding LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

“I don’t think the mind-set would have been the same if Miami hadn’t done what it did, because what Miami did sparked everybody,” said Johnson, a Lakers vice president who just sold his share of the team ownership. “It sparked Dr. Buss, because, remember, he was going to cut back but he decided to spend the money, so give him a lot of credit, and then it just trickled all the way down. I think it sparked Phil [Jackson] too, and especially the best player in the world. Kobe [Bryant] has now got everybody else on the same page.”

    Actually, what has sparked the Lakers to this great start can be summed up in 2 words: Lamar Odom. Yes, yes I know, he has been Mr. Inconsistent in the past.
    .
    But recall – it was said, EVEN last year, that the key to the Lakers being ‘complete’ is for LO to play at a consistently high level, and he is doing that now. He is a ‘different’ player now – you can easily see that now. Recall last year he would ‘often’ get “charging” called? He didn’t run into the lane confidently, and so players would jump in front of him, and they would draw the charge. NOW – he is getting into the lane, and making some great ‘takes’.
    .
    Why is he doing that? Because of FIBA World Championship Summer Camp. OK, the Lakers are operating as a team now, but LO has ‘really’ stepped up. Now the Lakers have ’3′ stellar starters – the Big 3, and I would also include Ron-Ron there – so we have the “Big 4″.
    .
    But also, no doubt that the Lakers made those offseason moves to close up the ‘holes’ in last years’ team. And also, Miami’s moves probably had an effect on that.

      good point,,but i would give the credit more to our bench,,you guys see how hard the B3 (barnes,blake,brown) plays,,they’ve playing with good D and good offense,,give mitch credit for getting those three in offseason,,when bynum comes back put him in bench so LO can stay consistent,,

      and try trading vujacic and draft pick for turiaf
      since knicks had interest on vujacic on the past

    • Robert.

      Yes! Ur right, Genius. The bench rules! (killer Bs). And your idea for Sasha 4 Turiaf is brilliant! I hope Kup/Buss make that move. Turiaf on our team will create HUGE excitement, and exonerate the Lakers for keeping Sasha instead of Ronny years ago. (ok, Sasha’s free throw in Game 7 was ‘game changing’, but that’s it for 5 years of patience).
      .
      Bring Ronny home!

      • Genius

        lets go get turiaf !!!! sasha and caracter for turiaf sounds good to me,,

  • ceballos-neverforget

    Three-peats are never easy, and every time you need to dig a little deeper for that motivation. Sure, what’s wrong with saying Miami inspired us to step our game up? I’m sure after we get our 3rd, everyone in the media will demand that Lebron “Quitness” James deserves a championship ring for “inspiring” the Lakers to victory

  • http://therealkobebryant24.com kb24

    Not sure I agree or disagree. We are definitely paying attention. But still jerry buss and kobe and phil don’t need alot of motivation

  • LAland

    Omg just say Lakers all they way !!!!!!!!!!! fck we dont need nooooooo motivation from Miami lakers gonna Fck them up wade,bosh and james gonna be crying come to finals and i dont think they gonna make it to finals anyway …………hahahahahahaha Yay lakers 3peat all the way.

    • smorgishborg

      Motivation is important, especially after winning a back to back. Certain players can get complacent even though they say winning another ship is all they need. That includes Kobe. I’m pretty sure when everybody wrote off Kobe during the mid point of last season and how lebron was that much better than him, he got pissed off and became more driven to shut the haters up.

      Now this year, with the media saying Miami is going to take it when they didn’t do shit yet, that pissed off every other team in the NBA and now everyone is hungrier than ever!

  • kobeFINALMVP2011

    y people keep saiding the big 3 at miami when bosh is not good as LO bosh suck, all heat have is two superstar the rest is scrub

  • Robert.

    Yes! Bosh is out of place on this team. He was great as the go-to guy in Toronto, but he has to defer to 2 superstars.
    .
    Let’s break it down:
    .
    LBJ=small forward, DW=guard, Bosh=power forward
    .
    Duncan=power forward, Parker=guard, Ginobili=guard
    .
    KG=power forward, PP=small forward, Allen=guard
    .
    Pau=power forward, Kobe=guard, LO=small forward
    .
    One could say that LBJ doubles as a guard (hence, swing), but then again so does LO.
    .
    In any case, notice that one of the ‘key’ spots is Power Forward. Bosh is not quite in the same class as Pau, Duncan, and even KG (in his prime). Actually, these last 3 PFs tend to be ‘center style’ PFs, which is the key.
    .
    The key spots on the heat NOW are the 2 superstars, who are at guard and small forward. The ‘guard’ spot is not the ‘main superstar’ of miami now (i.e., LBJ is the main superstar, and ‘mostly’ does not play guard).
    .
    So, in summary, the heat are not really built for a championship, and they can’t be as long as the PF spot isn’t a ‘superstar’. At times, it seems like the heat have ’2′ superstar guards, and one ‘not-superstar’ PF. That won’t work. Look at the Spurs: the game “goes” as Duncan goes. He’s on the downside now (although he is still a great player). Look at the Celtics: when KG started reaching his limits, the Celtics had trouble (and still might, if they’re not careful). He’s playing better now, but still not as good as in 2008.
    .
    We have Pau. We also have the best player on the planet. That is the ‘stuff’ championships are made of.
    .
    Don’t matter what anyone else (including heat) do.
