Despite last night’s listless overtime victory over the sub-.500 Houston Rockets, the anxiety surrounding the Lakers continues.

Following yesterday’s Farmers Field news conference in downtown L.A., Lakers legend Magic Johnson chimed in on the champs recent struggles, and on Kupchak’s comments regarding a trade possibility before the deadline:

“I think we have to. We have to do something. The Lakers are not responding and two things showed me that — the Miami Heat Christmas game and then the Boston Celtics game [on Sunday]. When you don’t get up for your two biggest games during the season and you have flat performances, then you have to start looking at trade possibilities to improve the team and bring some energy to the team and bring some new life to the team.”

Moments later, he solidified his stance by saying…

“We’re not responding to the more athletic teams and the quicker teams. So we must change something. I think we have to now look at this team and maybe say we’re not good enough. Things might have to change.”

ESPN L.A. columnist Arash Markazi has the full scoop here.

    magic needs to shutup..we’re fine

    • meez

      Man Magic is right! !!!

    • Celtics Suck Nuts

Hmmm….. you know more than Magic?

    • LakersThe2010Champs

We are fine? If we just want to make it to the playoffs and play a couple of rounds there, then yes. But the Lakers goal has never been just making to the conf finals. Anything short of a championship is a failure for LA. With that expectation, we are not fine. I agree with Magic, we need to make trade to get to that level. The group as is is too slow and no defense, and can’t beat any contenders (hope that I am wrong and they can beat the Spurs tonight).

All this talk is stupid . Everyone talks about the Heat Boston so what. Our roster is insane they just nee to get there stuff together .
Move La Mar to point . Thats are Pippen play Bynum Pau Kobe Barnes, bench Arttest. Build leads thensub Shannon Ron Blake . Having three bigs will confuse most teams.

    • 242LakerFan

All this talk is trying to light a fire under these guys’ asses. Yes, the roster is “insane”, but they’re playing more like they’re in concrete sneakers!
Maybe this will motivate them into some consistent effort. That’s the only thing missing on this team; effort.

      • http://TheLakerNation Pretnenders not Contenders

Thats not the only thing missing. You guys take a long hard look and try to be honest with yourselfs. Ron Ron is done. He got his nut off last year this year its over for him espacially against the top teams. Look at your bench laker fans and compare to the Celtics and honestly ask yourself (and be honest to yourselfs) do you feel like your bench can hold a lead in the play-offs? These coments by Magic, Jerry West, and others is true or they wouldn’t say it.

        • 242LakerFan

I’ll get back to you as soon as I figure out what the hell a pretnender is.

            Classic 242 comment… nice!

    blow this team up now

    • daboss1848

seriously? u could have me arrested for such terroristic threats! calm down hack.

      • Kurarj

Wtf is that? Are you Smeagol or what?

Whatever. We have a marvelous roster. We can win anything with our players. The problem is, except for Kobe, we’re not even trying. We’re like: “Oh! It would be better if we won this game” while we must be like: “Come on, man! We MUST win this shit!”.

  • xtro

we are not fine. a trade can jumpstart this team.

  • Ronnie

Guys a trade is not such a bad thing. This trade works on the real gm trade checker: andrew Bynum and Ron arrest for Carmelo Anthony. We could also throw in a first round pick. What do you think?

    • Josh

seriously I have been saying this since the whole Carmelo trade rumors started. I bet Melo would jump on the chance to join a team that actually has a chance at a championship unlike the Knicks.

    Melo is the answer

  • daboss1848

was the question: who the lakers will not get?

  • Gelo

Let’s try to get Melo, Chauncey and Nene and then we can call ourselves the LA Nuggets. LOL!

  • Nwiids

all this about getting Melo is a stupid trade and I will tell you Why. Trading Bynum for Melo is like Trading Caron Butler for Kwame Brown hell no we dont want that I would only trade Bynum if Dwight Howard is there because we still need a Center in the Lakers and Pau Gasol cant last at the Center spot.

  • Celtics Suck Nuts

Not a very accurate analogy. The example can never help compare its players to Melo and Bynum.

I don’t know who to trade between Gasol and Bynum. Pau is not young enough to build around anymore for Denver. Drew is an injury waiting to happen every few months. Mitch is a pro so I know he can get it done if both teams really wanted to move Melo out of Denver.

I would also only trade bynum and anyone else other than kobe, pau, lamar for dwight howard. It would be like Bynum = hamburger, Artest = fries, any rookie = drink, Luke = napkins or the bag that everything comes in.
