Lockout Could Keep Lakers From Giving Jackson Multi-Year Deal?

This is an interesting tidbit.

RealGM: Sam Amico of NBA.com writes that the Lakers are worried about giving coach Phil Jackson a long-term contract because they believe a lockout is looming.

It was reported last week that Jackson would likely have to take a pay cut to remain with Los Angeles.

Amico also writes that the Lakers want to eventually replace Jackson with Brian Shaw.

Lakers want to replace PJ w/Brian Shaw at some point. They’re convinced lockout looms, so don’t want to give PJ a multi-year deal,” Amico wrote on his Twitter page.

Jackson is the one of the greatest coaches in all of sports, but at the same time the Lakers are on of the greatest teams in all of sports and if Phil doesn’t want to be a part of another 3 peat for less than 12 mil, im sure there is another quality coach with no serious health problems out there that would be a decent replacement. Byron Scott would be great, but the cavs most likely gonna snatch him up, especially if lbj stays.

cleveland will be a nice fit…….

i honestly think if PJ doesnt get to coach LA for another year or so, hes likely gonna retire. so anyone who honestly think PJ wil coach the bulls or cavs should wake up from their pipe dreams. and last i checked, isnt PJ looking to take this “one year” at a time? i dont think itll be THAT hard to get a deal with pj.

and about that byro scott thing, i wouldnt want him because we would need an awesome PG and an athletic big man for him to be effective (got to finals with kidd/martin andhornets with cp3 and chandler)

So he could make cp3 and chandler work, but not Kobe and Pau?

      • Tim

you got a point there, but i still wouldnt prefer scott as our top choice, the Lakers look like theyd want shaw to succeed PJ anyway so…

The lockout has nothing to do with Phil’s extension, he will take it one yr at a time like he has been. I think he will retire after next year anyways cause you can tell he’s getting close to that point from all of his interviews and if you caught that 1 hr documentary “The Association” about this lakers season you can just see how it is just looking like he’s ready to go soon.

don’t get me wrong. brian shaw was a great supporting cast for the lakers and a great assistant coach. but i don’t think he has the mentality that phil has…that patient, “do not panic, we been in this situation before, you figure it out” kind of mind.
