Lakers sign the 7 footer for another big body…

Lakers.com: The Los Angeles Lakers have signed free agent center Didier “DJ” Ilunga-Mbenga to a 10-day contract, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak.

Mbenga, a 7-foot, 220 pound native of the Congo, signed with the Golden State Warriors November 17 after spending three seasons with the Dallas Mavericks prior to their request for waivers on him October 30. In 16 games with the Warriors prior to his release January 6, Mbenga averaged 1.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.63 blocked shots in 8.1 minutes.

After signing with Dallas as a rookie free agent in 2004, Mbenga, 27, played 79 games over three seasons with the Mavericks, totaling 106 points, 75 rebounds and 35 blocked shots in 374 minutes. In his rookie year of 2004-05, he averaged 4.10 blocks per 48 minutes played while improving to 5.00 blocks per 48 minutes in 2005-06. In 2006-07 he was limited to just 21 games after missing the first 16 games of the year with a left foot tendon strain and suffering a torn right ACL 2/7/07 vs. Memphis.

    Nice.

  • Rpoc

    Yessir, unleash the BEAST!

  • SILO

Hey we got someone. Thats better than nothing, especially in the situation that we are in now. Hopefully he brings that d we are missing with Bynum out.

Hopefully 10days is good enough to get Mihm back at least if not, then keep on signing him back. Unless the unthinkable happens and Webber comes here.

    WELCOME DJ MBENGA!

  • Edward

Its good that we signed him to a 10 day contract. I can’t complain about this, but if he doesn’t perform, and we sign him for a yearly contract, then I’ll be mad.

  • LAKing

10 days is reasonable, if he doesn’t perform then kick his behind to the curb. I was kinda hoping for them to sign Chris Webber but he’s taking so damn long to make up his mind.

  • Thuggishdeer

5 blocks? OK. WITH HIS SIZE HE WOULD BE THE BEST BACK UP. IF HE WORKS WITH KAREEM AND LEARNS THE TRIANGLE WHO KNOWS. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

  • MILO

they better do a lot more now we need another foward

The Queen doesn’t to come here especially now that Ariza is down. He wants an easy road to the Finals in the East and that’s why he insists on Detroit.

  • mauriceaj

don’t like the 10 day idea….because he will not play with the same heart if he was signed for 1 year

how do you figure? don’t you think it’ll make him play harder with the hope of receiving a year contract? i think the 10 day is great because it puts us in the driver seat with the best of possibilities. hopefully, dj plays hard in hopes of getting another 10 day or a longer contract. if not, atleast he can hold us over until mihm is back. all these injuries need to stop!

inside information. He was a politik fugitive from congo and came to belguim. he never played b-ball before coming to belguim. Some coach (willy steveniers) started to train him and got him the belgian indentity. In no time he played 1st division in belguim for charleroi. (first division in belguim sucks)
he did alright but wasnt overwelming here. i saw him play live a few times. he played about 20 minutes/game here. he was a big force, but never played good b-ball in my opinion. but trough some connection he got into the nba. the rest y`all know. he never played alot, doesnt score much, takes some rebounds a block once in a while and alot of fouls. I`m a big big big LAKERFAN i should be proud that someone from over here has the chance to play with the best squad in the world… but i dont think he deserves purple and gold. I hope he proves me wrong but i`ll tell u 1 thing… kwame is 10 times better. and we dont need a defensive big man. we ned a scoring one. LA FOR LIVE lets just hope kobe picks up the trash

  • KOBENATOR

We needed someone, not to many to choose from, only time will tell if he’s a fit. 10 days to see if the project will work, if not we still have some time to do some more shopping. Like Tyler said in the beginng of this thread he can’t be anyworse than kwame brown.

  • sammie

I really hope DJ can give us the help we need right now, maybe he can make Kwame a little better if it happens.

  • foxxy

DJ IF YOU CAN GIVE US PLENTY OF REBOUNDS AND BLOCKED SHOTS,WE’LL BE HAPPY….WE CAN DO THE REST!!!! SHOW US WHAT YOU GOT DJ!!!!

  • Rpoc

First of all Phil better fraking play him. That’s in doubt because he was signed today and has no practice sessions under him.

  • Lakers 24 7

Kwame IS better, but Kwame just doesnt put his mind to working hard to improve, he still thinks he’s playing in highschool, hopefully Mbenga will be a good addition and Kwame can come through

  • http://twoo2.skyblog.com 2spotz

mr b-day DJ never played ball in congo, he cam to belguim as a politic fugitive, he never played ball before, then willy steveniers (a famous coach in europe) trained dj. In no time he played 1st division in belguim for cherleroi. He sure was a big force, but doesnt have alot of game. Dj plays ball for about six year now. was born in congo but has the belgian nationality now. I saw him play live in our league, he was ok but not outstanding. he`ll bring good D, but makes alot of fouls and isnt a smart player (as u can see in the DaCOOO commercial :P ) wish him luck anyway, and i hope our lakers win tonight. But if someone is going to save us it wont be dj, it`ll be KOBE

  • kobe_or_not_kobe

YES! thats great we signed someone no one else wants!!

  • Rpoc

If you want to feel better, crappy pickups that turned out not so crappy: Matt Carroll (everyone should remember how he lights us up), Barnes, Azubuike, Devin Brown, Moore (why Queens gave him such a contract–no idea).

Hope Kwame/Mbenga isn’t a train wreck but turns out to be the unleashing of the BEAST!

  • Sako

  • AndrewsKnee

    stfu.

  • T-Dub

yeah…Kobe took out Melo!…That should even things up a bit because he starting to kill Luke!

  • mfoznot

All we need is for him to rebound and block a couple shots a game; just someone who is able to make the other team think twice about going down the lane. I think he can do that. And yes, better than Kwame.

  • Phant0M

    tacos and fouls….

    LAWL.

  • double

anyone else think that picture above is crazy?

  • dforce412

I was at Staples tonight and watched him.

We can’t really judge his performance in a ten day period (since he doesn’t know the system) but the Coaches can in practice.

  • 187 ON BOSTON

Lame-ar showed Kobe how to use the “foot of death” on
