PapaloukasShall we take a short break from all this Garnett madness, just for a second? Please? Okay good! Reports say that the Lakers have offered a deal to Euroleague MVP, Theodoros Papaloukas. They’re throwing most of the MLE at this guy. If he does dawn purple and gold next season, lets hope he isn’t another Sasha bust. I like knowing that the Rapters are intrested; atleast we know it has Bryan Colangelo’s support. Personally, I’ve been hoping to land Mo. Williams with the MLE, this guy might not be a bad pick-up either. Just another MLE gamble. Let’s see where this goes.

LA Times: The Lakers reportedly are going beyond U.S. borders in their search for a new backcourt starter.

With Smush Parker out the door and Farmar having played only one NBA season, the Lakers have offered a multi-year contract to 30-year-old guard Theodoros Papaloukas, according to Eleftheros Tipos, a newspaper in Greece. The report said Papaloukas had confirmed the offer and was pondering it among a handful from NBA teams. Lakers officials declined to comment.

Papaloukas, a Greek native who is listed at 6 feet 7, was the Euroleague player of the year last season with CSKA Moscow, and is widely thought to be the best point guard in Europe.

IF WE GET THIS GUY AND KG lakers would get better

  • http://Lakers.com Ed24

If this guy is a point guard and he is 6 foot 7 he may be more valuable than Garnett. This guy is a must have for the Lakers. Greeks are great basketball players, just look at their national team. The Lakers need to sign this guy and do it now. A 6’7″ point guard does not come by too often. Mitch please sign this guy and sign Garnett or JO. Than we can be serious title contenders.

Man at this point, I’m just glad to see ANYthing getting done. I like this deal.

  • KB24withKG21

this guy could be better than garnett

looks good big point guards are hard to find to could be a key player down the road

any change will do for me. garnett drama is killing me

  • KB24withKG21

im glad this guy might be the new point guard of the lakers and not smush

  • kgmvp

guys just one question? Is this guy good? if he is good offer the contract now!!!!!!!!!1

  • Ryanfuu09

Alright… I like this guy… bring him in…. he could be a REAL! International Players have been REAL as of late… I been waiting for the lakers to look for someone outside of the U.S. Bring him in!!!

  • KG21

i like this …..i mean he won mvp in europe cant be that bad!

  • kobE.24

Hey hZm i have a question. do u have any laker wallpapers at 1680 X 1050 resolution.. thanks

  • http://Lakers.com Ed24

This guy is great. I seen some of his highlights on Youtube and he is the real deal. We MUST get this guy on the Lakers NOW!!!!! He is the perfect point guard for Phil’s triangle offense.

KOBE IS THE GREATEST PLAYER IN NBA HISTORY

  • steve

kgmvp…….is this guy good…..he is ,if you get a chance get a copy of the greece usa game this guy had 12 assists…and he has very good range

  • http://hzmdesigns.com hZm

I’m still a little worried about this guy because he is a Euro player. Youtube videos are great, but I can’t really judge this guy based on the talent level over there. Don’t forget, Sasha is like a T-Mac over there and I read somewhere that Slava was a Euroleague Championship MVP? (Gotta look it up)

WELL WE KNOW ONE THING KWAME CANT BE WITH THE LAKERS WITH THIS GUY.
KWAME CANT CATCH A PASS HE KNOWS COMING HIS WAY.IMAGINE A PASS FROM THIS GUY.BUT THEN MAYBE THAT MIGHT BE GOOD FOR KWAME.JUST A THOUGHT.VERY SILLY BUT A THOUGHT.

  • LAalltheway

True that, hZm. I don’t think he’ll be crossing up nba pgs like that. He sure as hell can’t dance. But he does seem to have good court vision, and he’s definitely more athletic than Sasha. He has some experience, so hopefully he can make an impact sooner than later.

  • lakers4life

i read a while ago that like 12 NBA teams wanted him

  • lakers4life

is he a good defensive player?

  • kb24lightsout

2morrows draft will be veeery INTERESTING to say the least.

  • LakersFirst

I think no one really knows what to think of this guy because no one has really seen him play. From looking at the youtube link, this guy is pretty good passer (but he did play in Europe and that’s certainly NOT the NBA) and at 6’7, he could probably rebound pretty well for a guard, similar to Kidd. The biggest question is his speed on defense. If the Lakers sign this guy, this guy has to guard Nash, Tony Parker, Mike Bibby, Devin Harris, to name a few, and I don’t know how quick he is.

I think the Lakers are hoping this guy turns out to a be mini Jason Kidd. I do like to see the Lakers think out of the box for once and anybody will be a step up from Smush Parker.

  • lakers4life

thats what im worried about, if he is a good defender

  • http://WWW.AOL.COM FOXXY

THIS WONT CHANGE A THING. OUR SUPERSTAR WANTS OUT!!!!!even though i know the lakers must go on!!!!!

  • LAalltheway

Man, I wish we got Kidd. I’ll get over it though if Bynum helps us land KG, of course. You guys think it’s foolish at this point to hope for a trade before the draft? The wolves could very well be waiting until the last second to make sure they’ve heard everything.

  • LAL4LIFE

THIS GUY IS GOOOOOOD!!!!! watch videos of him on youtube. he isn’t afraid to dunk, passes, penetrates the paints, and plays solid defense. oh yeah, and he is 6’7. im surprised he isn’t in an NBA team by now.

I hope they pick him up!

  • Dan

    …he’s 30 years old

  • Lakers305

    can he even play defense??

  • cyrus

I don’t know Theodoros Papaloukas but I know that European ball players play with fundamental skills. Look at Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol, and Tony Parker.

Could be good for the Lakers and Phil Jackson likes tall guards becuase they are better defenders.

He is not the youngest at 30 but again coach likes experienced players.

  • kisofdeath

ok all i know is that Greece was the team that knocked USA outta the world championships last year…i just looked it up in that game he had 8 pts on 4/6 shootin and 12 asts

i just watched the vid he’s like a giant jason kidd or a greek penny…

but when i read his name first thing that came to mind was philappousus hahahhahhahahha

  • http://www.getgarnett.com Rok

I think it’s better that they go after J.R. Holden, younger and his play amazes me :).. i really love to watch him play

  • http://www.getgarnett.com Rok

Though Papaloukas isn’t bad, he’s really good 2, but older:)

  • http://www.getgarnett.com Rok

Langdon wouldn’t be so bad either…

  • http://www.getgarnett.com Rok

But Navarro would be just freaking perfect, or his teammate Jaka Lakovic

  • Papihitman

    WHAT A NOTICE!!!

  • i_am_what_i_am

Guys i live in Europe and i watched this guy play and he’s realy good..i mean he’s a top europian player so he can’t be bad and i know alot of u think that Europian basketball sucks but that’s far from truth..Euroleague is realy competitive and it’s not that far away from NBA..Lakers plz sign him!

  • kgmvp

sign this guy for one full season then if he´s good sign him for 2 yrs.

  • billyboy

yes, this dude can play GREAT defense.

but he’s too slow for the nba.

  • lakerfan81

Anything is an upgrade at PG right now. No one is expecting him to be a all star he just has to be ready to contribute which I think he is. If he can bring the ball up the court, hit open jumpers and play ok defense why not sign him.

  • gcdeen

i have no idea who this guy is. sounds good by his numbers and height. other teams like him so i’m glad that it’s not just sorry azz mitch looking at another bad european player. the lakers and euro players are like oil and water, look at the past, vlade, medvedenko, sasha, radman. he’s got to be an upgrade at point so why not try to get the guy. Elton Brand said he was having flashbacks of this guy so he must be pretty good. bring this together w/ the kg trade w/ odom for 8th pick/ brown, bynum and 19th pick, awlll man, i can’t wait for tonight!

Do it Mitch! Phil, help the guy out! Jeanie, get our backs! Let’s go Lakers!

  • gcdeen

check him out on his website.
    http://www.papaloukas.net
there’s also a contact section where you can contact him or his web people. we should all email him and tell him to become a laker!

not sure about the numbers. are their games less minutes? he doesn’t look like much of a scorer. potentially a good passer. unfortunately, at work i can’t see youtube highlights.

  • lakerfan81

I think the games are set up like NCAA games with two 20 minute halves, but i’m not 100% certain. We don’t need a scorer we need a player that can bring the ball up the court and can be smart and make the correct pass and play. We also need someone that will at least consistently try on the defensive end. I don’t know how good he is or will be in the NBA but anything is an upgrade. (I’ll take a contract, OK I’m probably worst than Smush)

  • kb24

this is the guy we have been looking for. a ball handling pg that can pass like steve nash. i havent seen shooting much so i don know if he can shoot and the video i saw of him he got a lot of steals. WE NEED HIM. HE WILL BE LOW PAID SO WE CAN USE THE HALF OF THE MLE ON A VET

  • gcdeen

word is we’re using most of our mle on our offer to him. i found this excerpt on him:

“Teo admitted the rumours that he is searching for a team in NBA, adding that this team should give him the playing time, the money and the victories that he [is] used to enjoy[ing] in Europe.

“I want to go to the NBA but only for playing in the highest level. I am not a teenager anymore; I am almost 30 years old, thus I have to be very careful. I will go to a team that is a winner. I don’t want to play for a club that counts 50 losses every season…. I am speaking with 12 teams but I cannot reveal them right now.”

Papaloukas said that he would like to go to “a team where the coach would respect me and believe in what I can offer. I don’t want to be like Vasilis Spanoulis that has the quality and the potential to play in the league but he belongs to a team that hasn’t given him the opportunity to play.”

“Personally, I am interested mostly for teams such as San Antonio, Dallas, Detroit, Cleveland and Miami. I am waiting for some changes on those teams. If an important player leaves, maybe there would be an empty place for me. However, it still is a very difficult and an important decision, as well.”
Painted Area readers should know Theo Papaloukas well, as we have extolled his virtues extensively over the past year. He has been the greatest winner in European basketball over the last couple years – here is his recent resume:

2005 European Championships: Led Greece to Gold Medal
2006 Euroleague: Led CSKA Moscow to title while winning Euro Final 4 MVP
2006 World Championships: Led Greece to Silver Medal, including upset of USA
2007 Euroleague: Led CSKA Moscow to championship game while winning MVP for Euroleague season

The 29-year-old is quite simply the finest international player in the world outside of the NBA. You can go to Draft Express for a thorough scouting report on his game.

As far as a quick scouting report, Papaloukas is essentially a point guard, with great size (6-7) and an exceptional basketball IQ. He is a playmaker extraordinaire, who runs the pick-and-roll very well (see: Greece v USA, 2006). He’s a subpar shooter overall, though he steps up in the clutch consistently (see: resume above). He’s also a subpar athlete by NBA standards, but he can still make things happen on the defensive end with his smarts and anticipation. Even though he has been a star for both club and country, he always comes off the bench. His influence is somewhat like Ginobili’s on the Spurs – he’s a starter in reserve’s clothing and he always seems to find a way to stir things up when he enters a ballgame.”

  • lakerfan81

Sounds like Miami might have a chance they need a PG. But we’ll see in the next couple of weeks. We could definitely use this type of player, and like I said before anything is an upgrade right now. I don’t know when players that are not in the NBA can be signed.

  • joshua

this guy could be the next steve nash.watch him on youtube he’s a good passer and he could dunk.

This guy seems like a good pick up. Good short term signing to PG until Farmar becomes a ready NBA PG. The lakers CANNOT use all of their midlevel exception on him though, we still have to resign walton, mihm and turiaf!

I can’t see this guy becoming a sasha vujacic. Was sasha ever mvp of the euroleague? no. Has sasha ever won a championship? not that I know of. How old was sasha when he came here, like 19? This guy is 30. I think this it’s a good pick up and these are the moves we should try to be making, this guy shows no signs of being a sasha vujacic. There’s only a few guys we could possibly pick up with mle anyways. we need veterans and this is the kind of guys we should bring in, granted he’s a euroleague vet, but any professional experience is good experience, after all his team beat the clippers :)

  • lakerfan81

he does seem to be a very good player but how well does he fit with the triangle offense. He seems more of a john stockton type PG.

  • kisofdeath

^^^yea and similar to jkidd and they were tryin to get jkidd so i guess theyll make him fit some how

  • katsam

This player is exactly what the Lakers need. A pure pg who can organise the offensive plays and pass the ball. At this time there is no better pg than papaloukas probably in the whole basketball world (maybe except nash and kidd). Incredible court vision.

  • TrustMe

I’m a Greek guy and huge basketball fan. Papaloukas is the No1 point guard in Europe. The only one that may compete with him is his teammate in our national team, Dimitrios Diamantidis. This guys won the the gold medal in the 2005 Eurobasket with Greece and got a place in the top 5 players of the tournament. He also won the silver medal in Japan (had 12 assists against USA in a 40m game) and got a place in the top 5 players of the world tournament. In both tournaments Greece faced France and I can assure you Papaloukas miss-matched Parker. He won the Euroleague with CSKA last year and was the Final-4 MVP and this year he was Euroleague’s MVP failing however to win the first place with his team. Anyway, this guys is a great defender, he is the best passer in Europe, he has the best drive and his body type (2m tall) grants him many advantages. He can score but he is not a good shooter. He’s thought to be the best player, at least PG in the continent. If you see the examples of Dirk Nowitski and Tony Parker, NBA MVPs, you will see that NBA teams can trust the European market and its best player.

  • Bill

Teo is a really graet player, that could make a very good season leading the lakers as the starter PG. My friends, I have seen smush Parker playing in greek leage. Teo is about 10 times better. He is very good defender, and an excellent passer, but the best thing to admire on him is his passion on great games. Just have look at his glance, he has the “eye of the tiger” and you will understand.

  • Sakis

    Hello!
    Sakis from Greece
I am a basketball player in Greece and i know many things about Basketball.Basketball is my life.Papaloukas is one of the best 5 players in the world today. For me, he is the second best player maker all over ages..Only one was better than Papaloukas.Magic Johnson. He has many similarities with Magic.Let’s explain:
Very strong and effective passing game.Only Magic could do that.
Very intelligent way of playing. He is really good organizing the game.He is always perfect.Never playing for himself, always for the team.Just Like Magic Johnson.
Excellent defending player:he uses his mind to steal the ball,he is always spectacular in his defensive duties.Same like Magic.
Very good scorer. When he decides to take the game into his arms, you can not stop him.He is really good from the 3 points shot
Papaloukas will make a huge impact in the NBA.I am sure about that.

  • 3-D

Seriously now. Parker used to play for Aris Salonica (Greek Leaguue) 3 years ago…
Papaloukas is about 200 times better…Period

  • EDP27

This guy looks like the real deal to me. The Lakers definitely need him. Solid defender, great passer. Take a look at his youtube clips. Our round 2 pick Sun Yue looks impressive as well. He reminds me of a more aggressive, not as talented Lamar Odom. In all of his youtube clips he is clearly the best player on the floor. Whether he will translate well in the NBA is my only concern. He looks like what the clippers want Livingston to be. Also our #19 1st round pick, Crittenton looks OK. His highlights aren’t that impressive. The thing I like about him, is he ran the triangle offense all 4 years in high school. If the Lakers do sign Papaloukas, then consider the backcourt woes solved with these three promising prospects! Now we just need a big man. How much will Gerald Wallace ask for???
