We already know the Lakers are going after Posey but it seems like their also making a run for Barry. What are your thoughts on this? Sound-off…

L.A. Times: The Lakers have talked with representatives of Boston small forward James Posey and veteran San Antonio sharpshooter Brent Barry to gauge the free agents’ interest.

Barry, 36, spent the last four seasons with the Spurs. He averaged 7.1 points last season, making a commendable 42.9% of his three-point attempts. He is a career 40.7% shooter from three-point range.

    wouldn’t be a bad choice

It wouldn’t please the people who are hoping for big signings but this would be a decent pick-up

    Decent at best. :|

Wrong. You guys are all wrong. Apparently you people don’t know the difference between jump-shooters and set-shooters. Barry is a set shooter, and this type of a shooter has many disadvantages compared to jump shooters. The only downside of jump shooting is it takes a lot of energy on the jump and the shot release. Set-shooting’s disadvantages are: easy to block, can be rushed, shot from lower elevation, requires space, and slow.

Now you all see why Barry would be a bad choice? He’s old, slow, weak, and a set shooter. Why the hell would you want a set shooter? How is that decent? NO it’s not. You see what losers set shooters are? They need to get open to get a shot off, and they get blocked much more often than jump shooters. If they don’t have space, then the can’t get a good shot off. That’s why set shooters like all awkward when the need to force a last second shot with a defender right in the face.

No way. Too old. Waste of money.

  • http://letsgolakers.com Mr.81

If Sasha leaves for more money; get him.

  • Lakerboi

If Sasha leaves, we need an outside shooter; set shooter or not, 40 plus 3 points don’t lie. He did kill us in one playoff game. But ONLY if Sasha leaves…GO Lakers!

    barry=no defense

  • Daryl Imhoff

The Lakers need to let Sasha know that they have alternatives. Barry is an alternative. Posey obviously brings more than Barry, but no way does Boston let him go unless they are happy with one and done.

    is say lets get him

I just read on ESPN that the Lakers are front runners in getting Artest. Kenny Thomas and Artest for Odom.

how is that possible when Artest already said he wasn’t going to opt out?

  • ricky

hmmm thats an interesting player to try and pursue. barry is coming towards the end of his career, with his age and athleticism (as in ability to compete at a high level) ever declining. however, he is still one of the better and more consistent veterans and shooters in the league. i think he would help the lakers out a lot with his excellent 3 point shooting and savvy defense since he did play for one of the best defenses in the nba the spurs (whom i have come to respect with their strong organization, professionalism, coach, and players EXCEPT FOR THAT DIRTY PUNK BRUCE BOWEN).

i think that if we don’t get either posey/pietrus, then he would be a good addition for us.

lets think about this, the team may not have cap space now, but we still have the MLE ($5-6 million), veterans minimum (~$1-2 million), and the bi-annual (~$2 million).

    offseason roster changes:

    1. re-sign sasha and ronny
    2. sign james posey/mickael pietrus w/ MLE
    3. if posey/pietrus not available, sign barry for veterans minimum or i think the lakers can defenitley try to re-sign mo evans who i really liked when he was with the team, they just had to trade him so orlando would take cook’s contract, but i would be super open into bringing back mo evans, good defensive player, much improved shooting, energy, athletic, etc..
    4. sign a veteran big man, preferably PF, with either veterans minimum or bi-annual salary

here is a list of current FA forwards/centers:

    – dj mbenga: bring back “tacos”. he played well with limited minutes this season, has some range, blocking and rebounding skills, has some hops on his dunks, i like him to stay if thats possible because he’s not bad and i like when the annoucers say his name “MBENGA!!”

    – pj brown: proved himself worthy this post season, defense, range, rebounding, experience

    – kwame brown??: not a fan fav of course, but still young and a big body that can bang, defend and rebound for us behind bynum (you all may think im nuts and hate me for saying this, but hear me out, he is my top choice since he is somewhat familiar with the team/system already and phil still likes him for some reason)

    – jamaal magloire: has been terrible since he made all-star 4 years ago w/ hornets, but can provide big body, defense and rebounding

    – juwan howard: same as magloire, used to be better, but still another big who has some shooting range and experience

    – eduardo najera: still a good role player, has range, hustles defensively, not a bad fit but too undersized if we use him as a PF

    – alonzo mourning: hard to see him leave the heat organization who has treated him so well and has had injury problems this past season, but still an intimidating shot blocker and defensive player

    – desagana diop: this guy is dope, has good defensive skills, shot blocking his best strength, rebound, quick on defense, another top choice for me mainly for his defensive skills in the paint

    – brian skinner: still can play, tough defender, hustles, a but undersized i think

    – kurt thomas: good defensive player, has some range, but most likely re-signs w/ spurs

We’re going to trade for him, because he didn’t opt out. If he would of opted out we could of just signed him.

  • Short Diezel

    NO NO NO.. NO!!!!!

  • http://myspace.com/sonicussj Whatsa

If we get rid of the dead weight.. then just MAYBE. And if we can’t get Artest or James Posey or any other good people.. then just MAYBE sign him.. because we have many shooters already.

  • LakersFirst

The Lakers acquiring B. Barry would be in the event that Sasha leaves. Not to mention, Barry would be a cheaper alternative. Barry wouldn’t demand a $5+M dollar contract. Sasha is.

Kobe is probably peein’ on his phone right now.

Please Mitch…..Pietrus,Prince,I would Gerald Green but Mavs picked him up(DAMN!),Gerald Wallace,ANYBODY BUT HIM!!!

  • http://ld2k.com LD2k

WOW! Check out this quote from Posey’s agent:

“I would say so,” Bartelstein said. “When you get a taste of a championship, you want to keep winning them. The Lakers are a great team.”

No direspect LD2K(Much respect),Posey is GOOD and he’d definitely be an asset but….he helped Boston win and I don’t want people sayin’ we had to get one of theirs to win,BUMP DAT!I do feel we’ll get’em ’cause Lakers are desperate, especially if Sasha walks….me on the other hand,PIETRUS is the BEST option ’cause NOBODY knows about his talents and he IS THEE(2 E’S,DAMN RIGHT)BEST FIT FOR THIS TEAM if the lakers aren’t signing BIG NAME FREE AGENTS!

Do your research on MP and tell me what you think and…………….I WANT AN ARTICLE ON THIS GUY(sorry for the caps)!

  • daboss1848

    pietrus pietrus pietrus

we already have pietrus – – – ariza

    AY MAN,It’s toooooooomany Daboss’s around here,really SCARY!
And didn’t we have this discussion already,so I guess you like Luke The Lame(good facilitator),huh?Pietrus is NOT Ariza, similar styles but different in approach.

Daboss,go check out Pietrus’s highlight reel on YOUTUBE or find any highlight on’em……AND I’LL BET ANYBODY ON THIS SITE THAT ‘IF’ MP COMES TO LA WE’LL THE CHAMPIONSHIP 3 STRAIGHT!

  • 123KID

PPPPPPSSSSHHH!!! he’ll be the lakers back up, back up, back up plan! but def go for posey! he must be the new championship luck charm for teams!

  • yellowpurplefever

This tactic is too tell Sash and his agent to back down a bit on the asking price. If Sash walks we’ll pick up Barry for cheap $2 mill who plays same position and have similar numbers. Way to go Mitch. I def. do it!

  • Edward

    No thanks.

  • Nabil

Yup. I think you’re right. It’s a tactic as well as a legit back-up plan.
