This is good news. We’ll need a big body to throw at centers like Shaq… The Los Angeles Lakers have signed free agent center Didier “DJ” Ilunga-Mbenga for the remainder of the season, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak.

Mbenga, a 7-foot, 220 pound native of the Congo, signed a second 10-day contract with the Lakers on February 1st after signing his first 10-day contract with the Lakers on January 21st. In 8 games with the Lakers, Mbenga has averaged 2.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.75 blocks in 7.1 minutes. Earlier in the season, Mbenga signed with the Golden State Warriors November 17 after spending three seasons with the Dallas Mavericks prior to their request for waivers on him October 30. In 16 games with the Warriors prior to his release January 6, Mbenga averaged 1.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.63 blocked shots in 8.1 minutes.

After signing with Dallas as a rookie free agent in 2004, Mbenga, 27, played 79 games over three seasons with the Mavericks, totaling 106 points, 75 rebounds and 35 blocked shots in 374 minutes. In his rookie year of 2004-05, he averaged 4.10 blocks per 48 minutes played while improving to 5.00 blocks per 48 minutes in 2005-06. In 2006-07 he was limited to just 21 games after missing the first 16 games of the year with a left foot tendon strain and suffering a torn right ACL 2/7/07 vs. Memphis.

In 103 career games including two starts, Mbenga is averaging 1.4 points, 1.2 rebounds and 0.50 blocked shots in 5.4 minutes.

i really hope we keep him for atleast the rest of the year.

DJ has proven to me to be a good solid defender in the 20 days he’s been a Laker. I don’t expect him to score but his offensive awareness impresses me. He knows to score when he’s open and makes cuts to the basket for open looks. He’s almost as good as bynum on the defense. I’d take DJ over an unhealthy Chris Mihm anytime.

  • alkebulanian

we have to give DJ the same love as gasol when they play their 1st game back at home.

Sick and tired of Chris “toilet seat” Mihm. Lets trade his azz! Haha.

Hopefully they can talk Mihm into retirement! This guys has been getting FREE money!

WE WANT TACOS,WE WANT TACOS(IN WASH.,DC THAT IS).Good pick up,I wasn’t always a fan but the first game he played for us dude went really hard.I agree and think we should try to trade Mihm.Dude hasn’t played a full season with the Lakers since he played in Boston(bad move getting him from there).

This is not a bad move this is a very good move. Mihm is not going to fill the void even if he does come back we need big bodies on the bench. And hey atleast he can grab a rebound or 2 and gives us 6 extra fouls. I have no problem with it. He’s much better than Kwame too, especially offensively.

  • Billy Kupchak

DJ is my new PS3 buddy!

  • Kobe08-09

    cool agin

  • mplakers

daaacccooo should thank shaq, the donut boy. if king kong butt shaq had not signed with the filthy suns mbenga would have been let go.

  • LakerNation1

    yeeaaahhhh DACOS!!!

Mbenga isn’t a star but he has shown more desire and fire in a few games than Mihm has in 3 years. Fix up Mihm and then ship him off. He has never impressed me even when he was healthy. The last couple of seasons this team has really been hurt by injuries (no pun intended). Lakers need people who are not so injury prone. This is a young team and injuries do seem to derail it easily. We saw that last year when once Walton went down the team was finished for the year. And Walton has never been the same either. Hitchening our wagon to people like Mihm was one reason for the painful mediocrity of the team the last few years.

Interestingly Mihm’s most productive years were with the Lakers, which means, what I wasn’t impressed with WAS his best.

This was done in the event that Mihm does not come back this year at all. Personally, I think the Lakers should buy out Mihm’s contract in the offseason (he has one year left – next year at $2.5M. I don’t think they could package him in a trade as no one would want him). T

his was also done in the event that Bynum isn’t at full strength for the rest of the year.

    He’s damn ugly!

I know he helped The Lakers win 3 rings so excuse my manners,F!@# SHAQ! I have more respect for Wade,at least he trying to work with new team,Shaq didn’t throw under the bus,HE’S THE DIESEL SO IT’S SELF EXPLANATORY but Kobe’s the bad guy.First his hip is so unbearable he can’t play and NOW HE’S MOTIVATED, repeat after me,BULLSH&%! I understand about being motivated but a hip is a MAJOR DEAL,my mom had hip surgery before,I’m feeling sharp pains,at times,in my hip as I get older so I know a dude weighting close to 400lbs is going to feel a lot of pain. So the question is “was Shaq really hurt or just wanting out of a bad situation and not being a MAN ABOUT IT”? Some of you will be mad about what I’m saying but remember this Shaq called Kobe selfish on countless occassions, the difference between the two is Kobe can Bitch about his situation with the front office and tough it out, that’s called LOYALTY,what does Shaq have?
