Lakers are defenseless in ugly loss to Nuggets

Yahoo! Sports: The Lakers and Nuggets won’t know for another few months who’s got the other’s number. For now, though, give Denver the edge.

Chauncey Billups scored a career-high 39 points, including nine 3-pointers, and the Nuggets won 126-113 Friday night, ending the Lakers’ eight-game home winning streak and improving to 2-0 against them.

Billups was 12 of 20 from the floor, including 9 of 13 from 3-point range, and made 6 of 8 free throws to go with eight assists for the Nuggets, who played without Carmelo Anthony for the seventh straight game because of a sprained left ankle.

“You’ve always got to be confident. There’s a lot of people that can say it, but until you can do it, you’ve got to get that confidence from the right place,” Billups said. “They’re the world champs. But we feel that we can compete with them.”

Billups scored 21 points in the third quarter alone, the most against the Lakers in one period since Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia 76ers had 23 in a game in February 1966. Billups’ nine 3-pointers were the second-most ever against the Lakers.

“He was shooting considerably beyond the line,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. “I’m just glad that didn’t happen in a playoff game.”

Kobe Bryant scored 33 points on his sprained left ankle, but the first-place Lakers proved no match for the Western Conference’s No. 2 team, the one they beat in last year’s conference finals en route to their 15th NBA championship.

“I could still be effective and play,” Bryant said tersely. “Obviously, I’m not as explosive as I was but I can still command double teams, things like that.”

Now the other teams will think they can achieve what 12 other teams achieved.

    • Green Flannel

i think its like 9 or 8 who have done that

as a lakers fan i do have to AGREE with you. Ive said it multiple times now that THIS lakers group as is will NOT repeat. We desperately lack an outside shooter, which makes it easy to defend us (they double team kobe and protect the paint) and like everyone knows, need a pg upgrade. Not to mention our bench hasnt showed up wen it matters and we all know kobes injury woes. Were just not deep; now i know why kobe DOESNT sit out. Imagine if he hadnt played tonight, wed lose by 50. As soon as he got out towards the end of the third denver made their run. Is it safe to say we should hit the panick button? This was clearly our WORST loss of the season…

  • http://lakersnation showtime4eva

played denver twice blown out twice….played clevland twice lost twice…i know we need a trade..but would that be enough,i mean we’re not in the same league as these teams this far..we’re getting beat out right.these teams are much improved.so hinrich wouldn’t have helped that much.their point guard killed us in all theses losses.i know we need a point guard.but we need one with the whole package.score,pass,defence,drive.harris wouldn’t be that either.to repeat we’re gonna need a bigger caliber of trade.like hinrich and noah for some toughness,we could give morrison, sasha, josh.maybe not that bulls trade but maybe another team..but that type combo.cause we need that “very good”guard and some strenth in the middle.we are weak.and we cant answer that.so noah would provide strength rebound, energy is key!!!we dont have that either!so,energy!but any way that’s what i see.we need a point guard full of fire.and a big guy with energy an strength.cause kobe always provides our confidence.shannon an lamar are pulling their weight.pau and drew are finesse.they need back up!fish is good but can’t put in enough minutes farmar aint too bad.if we could just add that guard an get that big energy guy! i would beleave we would be prepared then.but if we cant get that.i dont beleave we can repeat.we’ll see…….. go lakers!!!

  • AMPATUAN :)

    omg..whats happening..

    • lakerfan90

the lakers are showing the wrinkles in their armor thats what.

  • sasha-sucks>balls

Lakers need to Trade for Kirk Hinrich. DO IT MITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fkin Billup popped up NINE 3s in LA. THEY NEED A PG WHO CAN PLAY DEFENSE ON BILLUP AND OTHER GOOD PG”S

    • expo

yep!!! when they’re gettin owned by ty lawson(rookie) its a problem! bring in a defender who can stay with the small speedy guards!

  • drive-for-16th

BRING SOME ONE FROM THE D-LEAGUE, DO SOMETHING MITCH.

  • drive-for-16th

ALOT OF THOSE D-LEAGUE GUYS ARE GOOD, JUST DONT BRING MORE WHITE BOYS, THEY CANNOT PLAY BALL.

  • berkyberks

ODOM ODOM ODOM! where is he tonight use him for a good trade! gasol n bynum had a total of 2 trips on the line hahaha kobe a shooting guard made it 8 shot at the ft. where are the bigs? ODOM,GASOL, bynum?

  • Marwan Marzina

People the reason Odom didnt show up is because he is inconsistent. Look up the word!
He is an amazing player that I would love to have on my team and his inconsistency is the only setback but other than that, why the hell would you want to trade him? Is there any other versatile player like LO that plays all 5 positions on the floor and handles the ball like a guard?

    • berkyberks

forget that versatile thing he is a crap 5 yrs. is enough for him to show his toughness he has no defence! who believes in odom is moron!

      • drive-for-16th

YES!!! SOMEONE THANKYOU, I KNOW ODODM PLAYS NO FUCKING DEFENCE AT ALL, HE DOESN’T CONTEST SHOTS OR EVEN PUT A HAND UP A LOT OF THE TIMES.

  • Robert

Run out of excuses. The Nuggets were simply better tonight. They were also better the first time. Maybe they got lucky with all those 3s, but Kobe said at halftime that their team had too much dribble penetration – so where are the ‘bigs’ stopping this? The twin-towers? Ron-Ron?
Where’s our D? I think our ‘D’ is now the head coach of Minnesota.
    .
I don’t want to give up on the Lakers, but they have been dominated ‘too well’ by Cavs, Nuggets, and I feel like the Lakers need something else. Mitch may not do anything, because getting a player ‘just to get one’ might make the current team feel panicked. On the other hand, having a good PG, a small one who can also dribble penetrate, and/or a 3 point shooter would certainly help.
    .
I don’t know – this is a ‘bad’ loss. We weren’t supposed to lose. The Lakers missed layups, and had many turnovers, and were beaten around by the Thuggets. Not good, Lakers Nation.

  • THE WARLOCK

Chill…not that big a deal! …Lakers be just fine! …Every Nugget shot lights out for the majority of the game-Only K-Mart had a bad stretch! …Will not happen four times when the “Chips” matter most!
…Love seeing the Artest of old… Only needs to keep that justified rage in check, for the sake of staying in the game!
…Only a couple of things to worry about against a repeat, besides the injuries, of course… The everlasting lady-like approach that Gasol brings, as if it were a non issue, every night to the contest, and the obvious fact of how Kobe doesn’t get a lot of obvious fouls called for him, on almost every given night…
The question is… Is it a personal thing-(hatred), coming from most of these rogue officials against the Black Mamba, or is it David Stern’s NBA league wide mandate? …Hmmmmmm

    • pauer

Yeah there was a stretch of four plays where he was obviously fouled and it wasn’t called including a scramble with 3 Nuggets players for the ball, and then he was called for a ticky-tack right after.
      But, a champion still wins.

      • http://www.facebook.com/thejahjah?ref=profile Green Flannel

a champion can’t always win, but they never quit, and never make excuses, just keep tryin their hardest.

  • LC09

lmao EVERYONE look at that pic of bynum vs nene right there n tell me how they aint call an offensive foul on nene??? he clearly moved bynum right arm to get his shot off n YET DA REF CALLED A FOUL ON BYNUM… GREAT FU KIN OFFICIATING TONITE LMAO.. but its reg season ppl..holla at us in da playoffs

  • berkyberks

better be ready for another failure at the curse land….kobe need to get some rest like duncan on every back to back games!

  • Kobe8/24

I’m not worried yet. Last year we had some horrible games but still ended up winning the Championship but I will say this though, Pau MAN THE FCUK UP. Don’t cry for the ball if you’re gonna play soft.

    • lakerfan90

GUys leave pay alone seriously. Do u remember the play where he tried to get a layup but then dunked it hard between kmart. The guy is skilled and brings things that a “physical” does not. Every player has a weakness. Ron may be tough but wen have we seen him dunk the ball? This is getting old. Pau is and will always be a finesse player so stfu.

      • lakerfan90

        pau*

  • vlade4kobe8

So we got beat by a team that needed a win again at the champs. So even if we win it would prob get bashed because let’s say that the Lakers barely win. People would say that they won when the nuggs didn’t have Melo Lakers just need to match the other theams energy the whole game people panic way to much when they lose I trust Phil in the playoffs over any other coach. They will lose more before the season is over so should we wanna trade everyone when that happens again

    • http://www.facebook.com/thejahjah?ref=profile Green Flannel

Yea, i have confindence in Phil, he understands that these players watch TV and listen to the media. “LeBron is MVP, Lakers cannot do it again, Kobe needs to rest” they hear that and not believe it but take it into consideration and think about it to much. they get anxious and want to show up a team. they play awkward and just not as fluently. phil loves watching players progress and change in the course of the season. phil will be more strict in the play-offs. just stop blaming and LET THEM PLAY i want to see what this team has when it matters. (ex: Boston)

      • lakerfan90

so according to your logic then the only games that matter are those against boston. thats 2 games bud and remember the fist one could have gone either way; we won y a damn point to a hobbled squad. DOes that satisfy you?

        • Green Flannel

What the hell is our team? A goddamn healthy horse, NO! if you follow the lakers i will not have to give you the injuries these men have. We are weak but that is no excuse and when we beat injured teams it’s “oh well you know they weren’t healthy” but when we lose “this team is a forced to be reckoned with. all games matter to me but as defending champions, derek and kobe really only have hunger for more. this team is satisfied and confident that any game will be a walk in the park. We have only played boston ONCE (so your wrong). they know who will be a championship contender, and they will show up those games (they should every game) but once again i go back to the confidence that these guys have because of one ring. Last night was okay, but one thing i am concerned about is closing games against players who can shoot. LA in my opinion is the best in the west (tough comp in Denver). Did i explain myself well enough or do you have a better rebuttal?

  • drive-for-16th

dude sasha needs to go right now. like NOW! he cannot stay here.

  • Marwan Marzina

What really pissed me off in the game was that Melo was laughing at Ron after Ron was innocently explaining what happened.
Poor little Melo, you shouldnt be laughing after Ron has been playing with Plantar Fasciitis and you can’t play through a mild ankle sprain. What did Kobe do today? Same thing as Melo yet he played.
Melo thinks hes tough cause he was laughing at Ron. HA! Play through the ankle injury and we’ll see how tough you are. Dude missed 8 straight games cause of the injury.

  • http://57.amklac a Million Misses!

wheres our hero?wheres his defense?billups is what this team…every team needs…the mamba killer…………………………go lakers….is kobe hurt?

  • LakersMike31

Wow, guys. I am speechless. I think that at this point, the Lakers should be hoping somebody else beats Denver before the Western Conference Finals. Little brother is finally big enough to beat up big brother. And it’s not even just a guard problem. I mean, the Lakers are no doubt getting killed by the PG position. But Drew plays with NO passion. That’s not something you can teach, or learn, in my opinion. I’m gonna say that this is the game where I realized the Lakers are not repeating. They have no heart, guys. When they get punched in the mouth, they fall down and cover up. This is very disappointing. Is there a heart on the trading block? Can we trade Sasha or Ammo for some heart?

    • lakerfan90

read the 2nd comment on this pg

  • LakeShowAllDay

    get devin harris

    • LakersBabe

      yup

  • daboss1848

same panic monkeys as last yr just different screen names . . . “we need trades” after every loss!!

Only thing missing form this team is KB’s health, Bill’s acclimation in the system, and INTENSITY. Come Playoff time Bill and intensity will be there – KB’s health is only concern.

Relax kids – we lost games last year too. No champ has ever gone 82-0 – harder to defend a ship b/c every1 gunning for you, and you are gunning for no1.

Our 200 ship record was 67-15; 2001 defending champs record was 56-26; 2002 defending champs record was 58-24

  • gofeedtina

calm down, we’ll take care of the Denver Thuggets in the Playoffs.

  • Laker4 Life

Lakers need to make a trade or else they won’t repeat. I would definitely trade bynum for amare stoudemire. and trade sasha and morrison for devin harris. If Mitch does not do something the lakers will get blown out against the elite teams in the nba.

    • LakersBabe

thats too much. the sasha and morrison for harris i like. get amare but not by giving up bynum. we need his size come he playoffs

  • docholidae

You guys are tooo funny! The Lakers will be fine and you same guys will be SCreaming about how you knew it all the time! If the management can get a trade that HELPS the team then they will do it. That has been proven, if they can’t then with health we are the best team in hoops. POINT BLANK PERIOD SISSYS!!!!!!!!!

  • berkyberks

everyone says odom is a versatile player he plays 5 position…who else on the league has a player like him?…and why we lose to a team like memphis, poortland, clippers and almost to the kings and bobcats? where is the so called versatile? trade him use him as a bait get a good point guard or get back ariza….I hate that overated alien.

    • http://www.facebook.com/thejahjah?ref=profile Green Flannel

because right now, kobe is inconsistent because of his injury (no excuse, just the truth) he is not overrated, underrated and inconsistent, when has he gotten any recognition? and those teams have everything to prove “hey look at us we beat the defending champs! better beware of us!!” we come into those games and we (most of us) think the pussies can’t do shit to us and play like we are in a pick-up game. we are very confidence if not cocky. our mentality will hopefully change into more intense play.

    • LakersBabe

ppl calm down. i had my hissy fit last nite but im ova it. first odom is not the main problem. true i sometimes wanna slap the guy for his play but we need him.

second if u watched the game you saw how the nugget guards ran circles around fisher and farmar. the lakers need a pg. hopefully d harris but i will settle for hinrich.

third we need to get rid of sasha, morrison and walton. sasha plain stinks, morrison looks lost and walton plays no D and has no offensive game. he makes pretty passes sometimes but thats about it.

last but probably most important kobe needs to rest. he is playing like at 80% and that wont cut it. phil needs to shut him down and take a few losses.

      • http://www.facebook.com/thejahjah?ref=profile Green Flannel

we don’t NEED to change anything, change isn’t always good . They just need to change their playing style

  • Jim

Let me put it this way, we can lose to Memphis every once in awhile, we can lose to Houston from time to time, hell we can even lose to the Clippers now and again. But there are two teams that we absolutely CANNOT lose to. They are Boston and Denver.

What’s the difference? Memphis, Houston and the Clippers win with humility for the most part, The Celtics and Nuggets are filled with a bunch of trash talking jerks.

When another team tells you that you’re a joke or that they’re are better than you. That’s when you step up and beat their ass down. This was a redemption game for us, and they come in here without their all star and embarrass us like that, I agree we need a heart check. If we can’t find enough intestinal fortitude to come out and take care of business with these clowns, there is something seriously wrong.

Complacency? Cockiness? IMO you have to play consistently in a dominating fashion to have that kind of swagger. Kind of like Cleveland has been playing of late.

Whenever we lose to Denver it’s like adding insult to injury, because you have people like Gay Mart, Smith and Bird Brain talking crap about you. It’s embarrasing and humiliating.

This was a game I marked on my calendar thinking that the Lakers would come out and not only win, but absolutely pummel these guys to avenge that 26 point loss in Denver. Instead, Denver comes in and disrespects us on our home court.

Whenever we play these guys, we need to play the game like it could be our last, whether it’s in the playoffs or the regular season. These are games that you reach down inside of yourself to see what you’re really made of. This was a VERY DISSAPOINTING LOSS.

  • Karl

    Jim – nicely said!!!!

  • berkyberks

honestly i’m doubtful for tonight just like yesterday…but I still had the feeling that we will make it to the finals and that is for sure! lets see what it’s gonna be on the 2nd half of the season.

  • drive-for-16th

trailblazers tonight, i see a loss. we haven’t won in like 5 years there.

  • thanhttrinh

Lakers couldnt beat portland in the last meeting even they lost 6 players, Blake, Outlaw, Oden, Fenandez, Batum, Przybilla
wat the fcuk do we gonna do to against them tonite when they only play without Brandon Roy ? huh ? wat do we gonna do huh ?

    • THE WARLOCK

Bad boy- bad boy… Wat da fcuk u gonna do wen dey cum fo U! …huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh

  • drive-for-16th

u know i got more respect for portland now, even though i hate them, they have proven that their bench guys can step up even their 12th man is better than our 6th man. u know why, because they play hard and with heart, why cant we have some players like that, instead of stupid ass scrubs we have called a bench mob. like they should go shoot them selves, vujacic cant make a shot if his life was on the line. liek yesterday, he kinda was responsible for us losing when he couldn’t make a shot 5 threes all misses. if he makes 2 or 3 of those 3s the game would be different.

  • thanhttrinh

man thats an old story we’ve been saying for a hundred times, this Laker bench cannot play ball except LO, Shannon.
If portland says they dont care about against LA at all, u can take a look at their webiste, they posted the REAL BIG WORDS “BEAT LA” on their site, last time Roy said he didnt care about our losing streak in portland, and said he’s gonna try to beat the NBA CHAMPS
my point is, Portland needs to beat us badly, i dont get it man, why would they bring their A game when they against LA, there is no rivalry between these teams

    • drive-for-16th

they think their is a rivalry. dude so many teams think their our rivalry, its cause it the past we’ve beaten soo many teams to win the finals before. like portland and sacremento, couple of other teams , like spurs and shit. we’ve won soo much that its not a rivalry to us, to them yes it is.

      • Green Flannel

WELL, PORTLAND IS STILL A RIVALRY BUT SACRAMENTO WAS A SHORT RIVALRY IN 2000′S BUT THESE TEAMS HAVE SOOO MUCH TO PROVE AGAINST US BECAUSE WE WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP. SO TO ME IT IS JUST UP TO THE LAKERS TO MATCH PORTLAND’S INTENSITY. WE DIDN’T LOSE BY THAT MUCH, DID WE?

  • drive-for-16th

why the hell do we always have to play at thier home 2 times. we only play them 3 times this year and they only come to LA once

  • drive-for-16th

THSI TEAM NEEDS TO STEP UP. LIKE I SHOULDN’T BE SAYING THIS CAUSE APPARENTLY WE HAVE SO MUCH “TALENT” ON THIS TEAM.

    • Green Flannel

YOU SHOULD BE SAYIN THIS. THE LAKERS COULD GO FOR A THREE-PEAT IF THEY STEP UP BECAUSE THEY HAVE SO MUCH TALENT

  • drive-for-16th

WHAT TH EHELL IS PAU FOR HES SOO SOFT, YESTERDAY HE WAS PUTTING THE BALL IN LIGHTLY AND ONE TIME WHEN HE MISSED HE DUNKED IT IN, THATS WAT HE SHOULD ALWAYS DO.

  • thanhttrinh

YEA MAN, EVERY YR WE PLAY PORTLAND JUST 3 TIMES AND THOSE 2 OF 3 GAMES WILL BE IN PORTLAND I MEAN WAT THE FCUK IS THAT ? SAME SHYT LIKE LAST YR WE LOSS TWICE IN PORTLAND AND WON ONCE AT HOME, FCUK NBA SCHEDULE
DAVID STERN IS OBVIOUSLY HATING ON THE LAKERS, I DONT GET IT MAN, WHY DID THE SCHEDULE SET THE LAKERS 2 GAMES AWAY TO 1 AT HOME AGAINST PORTLAND ? WTF ?

    • Green Flannel

YEA THAT IS MESSED UP. LET’S MIX IT UP A LIL HUH?

  • http://www.myspace.com/626bones Lakers 24 7

I’m not worried. First things first, it’s only the regular season, second, the Lakers (especially Kobe) haven’t been the healthiest team in the league this season. Chauncey Billups just had a good game. He hit 9 threes, and scored 21 in the third. It’s unfortunate that it was against us, but he’s not going to put up those numbers every game. Denver just happened to be hot from behind the arc.

  • Kobe “Kaos” Jordan

Chauncey Billups had a career night against D-Fish. Enough said, we need Kirk.

  • thanhttrinh

dont prove me wrong, its about Phil Jackson
last nite’s game was a gameble, i mean how the hell didnt you call a timeout when BILLUPS was hot on 3s ?
secondly, our rosters gave him a real big space and let him got the good looks, i dont think when lakers up by 11 then down by 13 in 2nd half just because their 3s
i mean phil was given up this game since the 3rd quarter, sit kobe, and artest on the bench then its over !

  • http://57.amklac a Million Misses!

wheres bryants legendary defense when d-flopp is getting torched?i thought our leader would of helped out? team ball? leadership?: michael and LEBRONZE would of accepted the challenge.
