L.A. Times is reporting the Lakers are pursuing Steve Blake (who will most likely NOT resign with Denver sources say).

L.A. Times: …The Lakers have also reached out to free-agent guard Steve Blake, who was with Denver last season and could turn out to be the efficient veteran ballhandling guard they’re seeking.

“They’re really interested,” a league source said.

Blake, 27, was traded early last season from Milwaukee to Denver and averaged 6.4 points and five assists in the Nuggets’ high-scoring offense. Steady but not flashy, he is a pass-first player who can hit open shots. At 6 feet 3, he also has decent height.

thats cool the lakers do need a guard

  • RC

Steve Blake SUCKS and was a liability as Tony Parker chewed him up, he was nervous, passive and weak. He is a smaller version of Luke Walton. If the lakers get blake, why don’t they just hire a private investigator, because they will need one to locate the whereabouts of mr. Kobe Bean Bryant, he will be MIA.

Steve Blake SUCKS, another sign that Laker front office does not know TALENT!!!!!

He is the only guy that we can get. Everybody else is signing back with their teams.

  • fred0s

The only way I would sign him would be if he only asked for about $2 million or less (maybe a little more). Not really worth much more than that. And if you do sign him to the whole MLE, then make it at most 2 years to see how muchh he grows. If he does suck, we can just let him loose.

  • http://Lakers.com Ed24

We can’t get Mo Williams, he is going to sign with his team and he is going to get more money than Lakers can offer.

We Might Trade Farmar And Also Mitch Been Saying We Been Trying To Get A Veteran Point Guard.

  • gcdeen

Steve Blake is SORRY! Please Mitch, don’t do it. Luke was questionable, this guy just plain sucks. Let’s try and get Papaloukas! That guy can seriously ball. Just ask the US team who lost to him when he dished out 13 assists. I was reading this blog from this guy in Greece, said he’s the real deal, even said he’s no sorry azz sasha or Jaric, he can seriously play, but lacks a good jumper. Probably like Jason Kidd but for $3-5m, sounds much better. Who in the NBA will want to sign w/ the Lakers and play alongside Kobe anyways?

  • gcdeen

btw, give up on mo williams. bucks already offered him $8m, he’s looking to get $9 to $10m. Remember we only have $6m.

I’ve watched Blake play in at least 100 games, and I’m telling you he is a nice BACKUP point guard, but not starting caliber.

Today is shocking, we have signed one bench player to starter money and we are pursuing another bench player with full MLE money.

It is ok, when the Lakers get off to a SLOW start, everyone will say the team is adjusting to the new players. That won’t be the case, it will be because we have starters that are no better than BENCH Players. The only reason that Blake started at Denver is because JR SMITH got suspended and was partying too much as a youngster in Denver. Iverson carried Blake while that short tandem struggled.

Lakers will struggle with using Bench players as starters. It is ok, I have come to reality tonight, you sick laker fans that don’t get it will come to reality slowly each game in 2007-08 season. I’m over it, the lakers front office is the worst in NBA history!!!!!!

  • Lakers305

I agree, I would go after papa and overpay him before I would EVER consider using the MLE with Steve Blake. The Lakers will suck, I see the writing on the wall. I hope Kobe opts out with this shitty lineup the front office is assembling.

Go and opt out Kobe, I will follow you Bro!!!!!

  • WhitePower

The Lakers are finally doing it right. we will have a white point guard, white small forward and a white center. Finally a team that will be able to shoot not just dunk all the time.

  • punkjones

Oh man. I would much rather do the Luther Head for Cook (filler around both) and sign a shooter, Mo Pete, or a big guy with the MLE. I’m not sold on Steve Blake one bit. I thought he was a great PG in college, but I doubted he could excel in the NBA. He’s pretty average at best at this level. I think I’d rather go after Brevin Knight – he’d probably be cheaper. Steve Blake is not a very exciting choice and I can only hope they don’t waste the entire MLE on this guy. That would be terrible. Why not Luther Head? I don’t get it? Luther Head = better defender, better shooter, more intensity than Blake. I don’t like this news much at all.

Well versed Lakers305, you get a RC star for this post. I definitely see what Kobe has been expressing, Kobe should opt out, I will follow and support Kobe. Mitch kupchak goes after players like him but shorter, they are slow, white and average!!!

No offense, there are great white players like Bird, Rick Barry, Bill Walton, etc., but mitch kupchak was a slow average white bench player, and he likes the same breed, Walton, slow, white and average bench player, Blake, slow, white and average bench player.

Steve Blake is a nice backup point guard and you DON’T pay a backup point guard $5 million MLE money. Steve Blake was a liability in the playoffs against the Spurs and it caused Iverson to have his worst playoff series in Iverson’s career because Blake was so passive and could not guard Tony Parker. Blake sucks WORST than Walton.

  • http://www.youtube.com/darkice18 darkice18

i agree the only way i would accept Blake as a laker is if we sign him for like 2 million…

…i like steve blake hes like a poor man version of steve nash and hes also still young and can improve…he plays well defense. Also u guys gotta stop looking at stats and focus on his mentality hes a “PASS FIRST” PG which is wat we need not sorry smush “turnover” parker!!!…also he played only 30 mins a game and averaged 5 assist…think b4 all u steve blake haters write bs hate as usual….and last i heard mo williams wants more than 8 million…

  • RC

$2 million at the VERY VERY VERY most and he still would be used as my BACKUP point guard, and NOT the starter.

Farmar is probably going to be traded or maybe even Blake might agree to a sign and trade for garnett. Mitch is probably working on a deal to get garnett and he knows that he is going to have to trade one of his point gaurds inorder to get garnett. That is probably why he is trying to sign Blake. He needs a point gaurd because he is going to trade one of them for Garnett.

  • punkjones

    RC –
You are talking real sense right now. This doesn’t bode well for the Lake show right now. If they dare to give Blake the full MLE they are out of their minds. Or Mitch is. Whatever. It’s ok to think about possibly signing this guy as a last resort, but as a first option, before you’ve even done one trade? What happened to the Luther Head for Cook deal? This is crazy. And yeah, throw my vote in for going after Theo the Greek over Blake any day of the week. I don’t understand the timing of this at all.

  • RC

This may sound shocking to most of you, but I saw both Smush and Steve Blake at least 60 games each last year. I would sign Parker over Blake without any hesitation, Parker is a better scorer, and a better defender. A) One player scores 11 points and hands out 3 assist, and playes better defense, and B) the other player scores only 6 points and hands out 5 assist.

Which player would you take A) or B)? I would take player A, and that player is Parker. Now I’m saying I would take Parker if our ONLY choice was Parker or Blake.

Personally, I would NOT take Parker or Blake, I would take Papa or Head over Parker or Blake.

The Lakers remain interested in a blockbuster deal that would bring them a marquee player to pacify disgruntled superstar guard Kobe Bryant. Kupchak said Thursday that the Lakers were not interested in granting Bryant’s wish to be traded. Kupchak also said anyone else on the roster might be available if the deal was right.

The Lakers are pursuing Minnesota’s Kevin Garnett and Indiana’s Jermaine O’Neal. The Lakers are said to be interested in trading a package of players, including Lamar Odom, to acquire Garnett or O’Neal.

As long as McHale is running the player personnel show in Minny, he will NEVER trade KG to the Lakers, he will always say what we have is not good enough, it won’t matter. The only you will see KG come to the lakers is if KG opts out a year from now and leaves $23 million on contract to come over to the lakers. Pass-first PG who takes pride in his defense? I like that part of his game, but he’s spotty as a perimeter player. Those of you who are complaining about his PPG: 8.3 pts on 7.8 FG, with IVERSON (18.9 FG/G) and MELO (22.4 FG/G) on the team. It’s not as if there are two players on the Lakers who are going to shoot a lot more than that…

    wow look what mihm wwants…

They hope they can re-sign center Chris Mihm and a veteran guard.

Mihm’s agent, Jeff Austin, told the Lakers his client is looking for the mid-level exception of $5.5 million.

The Lakers think that is too much to pay for Mihm, who missed all of last season recovering from right ankle surgery and still was paid his $4.2 million salary.

Mihm has been working out with Andrew Bynum at the team’s practice facility in El Segundo, but the Lakers want to make sure he is healthy.

Mihm played in just 59 games during the 2005-06 season and averaged a career-high 10.2 points. He was injured March 12, 2006, against Seattle and played in just one game after that, playing 14 minutes in the season finale.

And what the hell are you thinking w/ your name? Bynum is sorry. What the hell has he done? He showed up 1 game last year against Minnesota, other than that, he sucks. 19 or not, he sucks. You’re probably a kobe hater too if you want to keep bynum. “I say ship his ass out”. we could have gotten kidd for his sorry azz and not been in this situation. and when is 30 old for a point guard? papa just turned 30 and probably has a good 5 years left in him. steve blake sucks. he’s no more than a backup at best. mark my words, if we get his sorry azz, you’ll see how sucky he is by the 10th game. again, i’d rather start crittenton or farmar over him. why sign him and waste our mle? as for mihm, f him! he should be willing to take $2.5m from us. we paid his sorry ass over $4m for him to rehab? shiiii… that’s b.s! as for you rc, you’re a frickin racist. take off your black panther hat and talk real basketball. i saw you on another site too preaching your racist crap. there’s no place for that here!

  • lakerfan81

OK once again people are just saying he sucks without backing up their claim with stats or anything. I know this is kind of useless for this site since most of the people on here are immature and really know very little about basketball, but I have a few minutes to spare at work right now. For the price we can offer, Blake is probably the best PG we can acquire. Here goes something no one else does, at least on this site, I will back my statement up with facts. First of all, the top two PG FAs, Billups and Mo Williams, will get much bigger contracts than the MLE. Billups will likely just resign with Detroit, and Mo Williams already reportedly being offered 8-9M contracts. Now to why Blake is not a bad pick up. Blake is a good shooter. He shot 41.3% from the 3-point line in 05-06 season. In the playoffs this year he was +24.3 and shot 50% from 3-point line. That is the most important thing for a PG in the triangle offense. He is not a great defensive player, but also not a horrible one. The lakers are obviously in need of another ball handling guard and Blake is the best guard available in the MLE range.

    mo willams not steve blake

  • gcdeen

stats are great but seriously, steve blake is not a premier point guard in the league. i would like someone who can play d at the point. that’s been our weakness these last years since we got rid of dfish. he’ll be eaten up by the likes of nash, terry, parker, b.davis. i agree, mo williams and billups are absolutely out, we just flat out can’t afford them. i’m not a big steve blake fan. if we can get a defensive minded 3 then we stand a chance w/ our perimeter defense, otherwise, we’ll lose in the first round again to one of the big 3. (that is if we even make the playoffs this year)

  • lakerfan81

I agree that Blake is not a premier PG in the league, but right now we can not get anything better in the MLE range. Also agree that the defense in the back court needs to be addressed. Blake did an OK job defending Parker in the playoffs this year. SA’s PG only shot 42% from the field. A big part of that is Camby, but no matter how good your interior defense is you have to have smart players that can make the offense player drive into your shot blockers. Besides that there really is no one in the league who can defend parker. By far the best finisher at the basket in league for players under 6’5”. Maybe just the best finisher at the basket in the league period.

  • gcdeen

blakes stats for last year. 41.1% from the field and 32.2% from 3 point land. not exactly what we’re looking for. by the way, compare that to smush’s last year at 43.6% from the field and 36.5% from 3. hmmmm… i’m personally a smush hater so that says how i feel about potentially getting steve blake. might as well start farmar w/ crittenton coming off the bench.

Maurice Williams: Could be Dealt – 6/01/2007 7:38:17 PM

    Update:

The Bucks are willing to re-sign Williams at $7 to $8 million per year, but the point guard’s looking for a starting number around $9 to $10 million, the New York Daily News reports.

    Recommendation:

If they can’t reach a deal, the team is open to moving Williams in a sign-and-trade. Memphis is rumored to be interested in Williams, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

  • “Billy” Kupchak

  • LAKobe4Life

Can we even try with Mo Williams here? Let’s see if we can get lucky with Mo Williams by getting him with MLE. Let’s just see what happens, it wouldn’t hurt to try.

  • gcdeen

Thinking about this team gets me down. Seriously. We need a PG, but can’t afford one. We need a premier player but don’t have the assets to trade for one. The talent we’re bringing in is mediocre at best. Last years signings were among the worst in nba history. Management is jacked up. Kobe doesn’t even want to play for us. In turn, nobody else wants to play w/ us or w/ kobe. I honestly think we’re done. I hate to say it but we might just have to trade Kobe. Problem is, we’re all hoping that Mitch does something great. I just don’t think he has it in him. It’s a serious longshot. This is my last post ever on this site until we get something done that is substantial to help our team. hey lakerfan81, keep these fools in check. peace!

  • lakerfan81

I’m sure mitch or someone contacted his Mo williams’ agent and he laughed at us. He reportedly got offered a 40M 5 year contract. Maybe the lakers should think about a sign and trade to acquire Gerald Wallace. The problem with that is the lakers would be overstocked at the SF position with Walton, Radmonovich and then Wallace. But he is an ok defensive player and talented offensively.

  • DEMARCOS HARDWELL

look everybody steve blake is not dat good all he can do is shoot.
mo williams is asking for too much money he wants 10 million

Steve Francis is about to be cut by his team there about to buy out his contract that will make him an free agent….towards the end of the season he was avg 25 points when he was in the starting line up…now i dont see any other point guard in free agentcy with that type of talent so i dont see why we cant use the mle on steve francis.

trade andrew bynum, lamar odom, sha vujacic, vladimir radmanovic 1st round draft pick for jemaine oneal, troy murphy, and danny granger

    the line up would be

    c-troy murphy
    pf-jermiane oneal
    sf-luke walton
    sg-kobe bryant
    pg-steve francis

    bench

    6th-danny granger
    7th-jordan farmar
    8th-ronny turiaf
    9th-maurice evans
    10th-Javaris Crittenton
11th-chris mihm if we sign him
    12th-brian cook
    13th-yue sun
    14th-marc gasol
    15th-vet pf or center

tell me i havent been doing my homework!!! yeah boi

Danny Granger is better than Luke Walton, so Luke would go to the pine. But forget all that, let’s concentrate on Artest, Papa and KG or JO or Pau Gasol. Then the lineup would be:

    C–TBD
PF–KG or JO or Pau Gasol
    SF–Artest
    SG–MVP
    PG–Papa

trade andrew bynum, lamar odom, sha vujacic, vladimir radmanovic 1st round draft pick for jemaine oneal, troy murphy, and danny granger

Laker fans, KG will not come to the Lakers. Listen to this, the lakers just signed Coby Karl (son of George Karl, Nuggets coach) to a free agent contract.

Now that is a mistake waiting to happen. As soon as cancer Coby Karl gets lonely, he will call his father and give away all of the Lakers secrets, and the Nuggets will end up beating the Lakers in the regular season or the playoffs. The Lakers front office are the most stupid idiots (I agree Kobe) in the NBA. Hire George Karl’s little spy, his son, STUPID, STUPID, STUPID.

And you KG fans think KG is coming to the lakers, not with this lakers front office, wishful thinking, PAY ATTENTION, they are idiots (and Kobe said it)!!!!!
