L.A.Times bloggers respond to “Odom to Miami” reports

Andrew Kamenetzky over at the L.A.Times blog weighed in on the latest report.

L.A. Times: Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Lamar Odom could be close to signing the Miami Heat’s long-standing full mid-level exception offer. While it’s important to note that no decision has been made, those in AW’s ear hint that a return to South Beach could very well be in the cards.

Odom has not reached a final decision, the sources said, but there is growing belief he will ultimately return to the Heat unless the Lakers improve their current offer. “It’s close, but it’s not done,” said one source.

Without question, that language feels like it was floated by members of “Team LO” as a means of applying some (pun intended) heat on Lamar’s most recent employers. Not that Lamar can’t possibly be mulling a return to South Beach, but the mere hint of an ultimatum does feel like a shot lobbed across the Lakers’ bough. But it doesn’t feel like a direct hit sinking the ship, so for the time being, I’m not abandoning ship when it comes to hopes of Lamar remaining a Laker.

I was, however, a little concerned over the detail there Dr. Buss is lowering his offer (which gibes with LAT predictions upon the resumed talks). As BK noted in the now iconic “Kitten” post, Doc B.’s pride needs to remain in check as well. Getting upset that Team LO fielded offers from other teams while failing to return calls over his own is understandable, but there’s a bigger picture involved. Just as it would be silly for Lamar to sacrifice a better winning potential over money that- in the grand scheme of things- shouldn’t make a dent in his long-time security, it would be equally silly for Dr. Buss to sacrifice championship potential to remind folks that nobody crosses him. If it made sense and was fair to (reportedly) offer LO 3/30 or a partially guaranteed 4/36 a couple weeks ago, it makes sense and is fair now.

Going through all this with this dude and we could have had Trevor! I don’t know what makes LO think Pat Riley is his daddy with all this talk of loyalty, seeing as though he only played there 1 year and they up and traded him for Shaq’s corny self. Just think this dude has the potential to destroy the entire team and leave us with Sheldon Williams. They might as well not even sign anybody else if they don’t get LO, ’cause there are already 2 wasted roster spots. Just give the minutes to Powell.

  • Victor

Fück Odom. Bird brain. If they took the initial offer by Buss which is way good enough on a $$$ standpoint then this would be over. I think for Odom this is not about the championship anymore – its all about the money. Maybe he’s okay with 1ring. There are so many players wanting to be part of real championship caliber team but Odom doesnt realize that. Whether he comes back or not, I wont see him the same way as before. As of now, fück you Lamar! Sück on Wade’s c0ck.

This scenario would not have worked. If LA would have signed both Ariza and Ron Artest and let Odom go, they would be left with 2 SFs fighting for minutes with no solid power forward. Yes, Artest can play the 4 (during emergencies & small lineups) but he is not a prototypical 4. He belongs at the 3 spot.

  • http://AOL.COM LAKERS#1FAN

NOTE TO L.O. YOU KNOW WE NEED YOU AND YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO BE HERE SO WHY PLAY GAMES . U SAID YOU WOULD TAKE LESS MONEY TO STAY WITH LAKERS NOW THEY ARE OFFERING YOU THE BEST DEAL . NOW ITS UP TO YOU TO STOP TALKING AND START WALKING

  • dvdman

Shows you how retarded LO is. I hope he accepts a 5.8mil dollar a year gig, serves him right when he never responded to a 10mil a year deal. You made your bed, now you have to lay in it. Have fun not winning and making 4.2 mil less than you would of on a championship team. What a looser. I guess all of those times he looked like he was sleep walking on the court is exactly who he is all the time. LO, were you dropped on your head as a child? Actually, it’s probably all the lettuce he smokes.

  • http://www.billieraven.com billie

I don’t think the reason the new offer to Odom is lower than the original is because of Dr. Buss’s hurt ego. Management did not want him to make the original extremely generous offer, not because they don’t want Lamar to stay but because he didn’t have to offer that much. No other team could offer Lamar the deal Buss offered (quoting John Ireland).

So when he turned his head away, management said ok fine, you offered the 10mil/year and he turned it down. With the going rates all you had to offer him was 6mil/yr. If talks resume, why on earth would you offer the 10mil again? Remember the luxury tax doubles that bill for Buss.

It’s not about hurt pride at this point, it’s about the reality of what the market value of Odom is, not what he is “worth”. If Lamar is comparing his salary to say Pau and saying, well why would I consider taking less than Pau (or whomever), he has to remember that those silly numbers change per season, per economy, per the various moves that get made for long-term planning. I mean if a player got what he is “worth” how could Sasha be making more than $1.50?

At this point Lamar is pissing Laker fans off. I still think he will stay and I still think we are better for having him but IF he goes, and we face a season without Trevor & Lamar, we’ll basically be starting over with a new team and a new chance like anyone else’s to win the ring.

  • What wil be

My thoughts now are yes it was great having Odom, but if the Lakers loose him, are they going to add a player since this is luxary tax money, and not cap money? Artest is great to have, but I would think a trade or pick up would go with Odom signing with the Heat would go down?

  • http://lakerskingdom.com Wallace

Everyone lets get over with this freaking drama and focus on the replacement. We all love Lakers and we need to trust our upper management. This would all be resolved if Kobe were to give a small chunk of his (approx.) 24 million a year. Lamar was making (approx.) 14 and year and now he cant even get 10 million a year. Kobe not too long ago Kobe was crying because he didn’t have enough talent around him to contend while in his prime and now straight off of a championship he is standing back and about to see management let a talented player that knows the offense walk. Who the hell is going to replace LO? It sure as hell better not be Shelden Williams (Mr. Candace Parker)

  • DwiZ

Its funny though… how bad people want odom when just last year he was invisible at times and people were griping to trade him.

  • Victor

I think as of now we gotta face the reality that there is a 50-50 chance that Odom will leave or stay. Im pretty sure the Lakers Management knows this and we just need to wrap up all the sh!t that has been brought about by this drama and wait till the free agent signing deadline. Lets take a look at David Lee and other possible additions if LO leaves.

  • LakerDownUnder

We can not sign anyone else for more than the vet min so you can forget Lee etc unless we do a sign and trade. It’s either Lamar or a min vet.

  • LakerDownUnder

The thing that sucks is that no one actually thinks Lamar is worth the money he’s asking. It wasn’t that long ago that most people wanted to ship him out. The reason he’s being chased by us is becasue he’s the only player of note we can get (becasue we’re looking to resign him). If we could spend 7 to 10M in the open market it wouldn’t be on him.

And Buss knows this and that’s why he’s only looking for 3 years…

  • LakerDownUnder

I’d like to see a David Lee and Nate R trade for Odom but NY won’t want Odom’s 4 year desired contract either.

  • mlkg721

[Comment ID #81193 Will Be Quoted Here]
I’m sorry, but I hate hearing peope say kobe should;ve took a pay cut. Forget that, he deserves his money and Odom deserves his. If he thinks he is worth more, then go ahead and leave and play for a team with no shot of winning We’ll get over it, but by no means does kobe need to give up money.

  • KD

[Comment ID #81193 Will Be Quoted Here]

Why should Kobe take less to give it to someone who only wants to participate in about 30 games a season! No one was telling Jordan to give some of his 30 mil. a season to Scottie. The fact of the matter is that no one else is offering Lamar more money, so that isn’t the issue. The problem is that Lamar is stupid and spends too much time blazin’.

  • LakerDownUnder

[Comment ID #81203 Will Be Quoted Here]
Agreed! No team with any real money to spend (eg Portland) even offered it to Lamar. In fact Portland seemed to be chasing half of the NBA and still didn’t go after LO.

You are only worth what the market is prepared to pay. When you sell your house it doesn’t matter if you paid $1M 3 years ago, you get what it’s worth today. LO need to remeber that.

  • S-Quire

No need for the harsh words for LO, although it just shows that people really care about him being a Laker. He’ll be back. The thing is that 1) Everyone knows he’s not about the money; 2) Everyone knows he wants to be back to play with Artest, not to mention the rest of the team, another chance at a Championship, and the city he’s lived in most of his career; 3) Everyone knows he’s worth more than what he’d probably get from the Lakers but he doesn’t care SO . . . He has a weak bargaining position and doesn’t want to play for below his value more than he’s already willing to. It’s gotten a little nasty but both side will ultimately meet half way. Buss will reward Lamar and get over the pride, and LO will do what he wants in his heart, come back to the team, but feel appreciated through a reasonable contract. As long as LO’s agent doesn’t call the shots, we’ll have a better team next year including Candyman.

  • http://lakersnation.com frynite

Odom is pissing me off and he doesn’t deserve our support regardless of what the outcome is. I think we should just end it right here and aim for Warrick or call Chris Webber out of retirement.

  • FarmarAllStar

This is stupid. I’m tired of LO news.

  • ceballos_neverforget

    …yawn.

We’ve got a full season for bynum to find his stride again, so LO’s absence will be hardly noticed, especially considering the money he left on the table.

Artest is a solid swap, considering it was an LO/artest swap the TLN nation was begging for last season from Sactown…remember?

We’re good, let him walk, we offered him almost double what Miami or anyone else was going to pay, and the best roster to compete on, so screw him. LA still has it in the bag!

Do you have a brain? I don’t think you do! Don’t you dare make this a Kobe issue. Kobe deserve anything he gets from the lakers and shouldn’t even think about giving up his money to this guy who only tries in about 30 percent of his games, so why don’t you shut up! And since you want someone to give up their own money, you should give up your salary. Every little bit helps you know, so you should call up Dr Buss and tell him you’re willing to give him all of your small salary to keep this part time player.

Mmh. if Odom did go to Miami, it’s a bit bad. Hope everything will be better.

  • ShowtimeEra

Ok, here’s the problem! From what I’ve read from NBA journalists articles is Lamar was ok with the 9 million a year, but where the problem comes in is Lamar wants 4 guranteed years with the Lakers, the Lakers and Buss is only considering 4 years with the 4th year being the teams option. Lamar doesn’t like it! Thats the problem! If I was the Lakers I would give Lamar his four guranteed years at 36 mil, and there’s always a possibility if they are’nt satisfied with him after the third year, package him up in a deal and trade him.

  • fu$k LO

Fuk LO already just sign with whoever you want to sign with and shut the fuk up. If he leaves fuk him. Try to sign Hakim Warrick.

  • showtimelakes

I would a little upset I mean, the lakers pay luke walton around 5 mil. Talk about someone who doesn’t need to be paid that high.

  • Gino

what’s wrong w/ Buss not guaranteeing Lamar’s 4th year? it’s like dangling a carrot in front of a mule for some motivation. at least these players don’t get into that sasha vujacic mode to sit back sippin mai-tai’s and work on their facebook profiles once they get their big pay day. if dr. buss feels that this guy will work harder if he needs that onus on him, then he knows his personnel much more than us. perhaps lamar is the type of person who needs that external motivation to perform, not like kb24, d-fish, pau, and artest who just need themselves to be motivated.

all things will work out for the long term, whether the plan is with or without LO. the Lakers are bigger than what any one player can ever be, and never revolves around just one person; no matter what any other trolls and haters from other teams may say.

  • ShowtimeEra

Alright, I’ve got it. If LO leaves, we pick up Bruce Bowen. Then, 2 of Kobe’s defensive enemies are on the same team. The Lakers become a defensive juggernaut, and shut down everyone. Then matchup problems (that LO created) won’t even be an issue. Just let Kobe & Pau (and others, if interested) score at will. Whaddya think? We can sign Bowen to the vet min, and he might want a few more rings.

  • LakeShow

The most discouraging aspect of this is that the Lakers should have given Odom an offer on Day 1 of free agency and given him no more than 2 days to sign or come back with a counter offer. I am saying this because had the Lakers known he was going to be just an idiot, we would have probably changed our philosphy on free agency. We would have signed Ariza first (we had his bird rights, so this would have left us with the mid-level exception). We then could have used that to sign Rasheed Wallace or another decent 4/5 that has signed recently. Since using the mid-level on Artest and waiting this long, we are in absolute no mans land. If Odom leaves (which I almost hope he does now), we may have to start the season with what we have now. Then we can hope that Morrison plays a few minutes a game and shows what he can do when healthy. We can then easily ship him out and his $5M expiring contract to a team looking to shed payroll.

If Buss/Mitch will guarantee the 4th year, then LO would be signed by now. He’s only considering Mia offer because he gets 5 years. If it was about the money for Lamar, he would have taken the $10 million a year for 3 years LA offered. We better not lose Lamar because the FO refused to offer up a 4th year.

  • Robert

“Odom the worst player”? What you talkin’ about, Willis? I had previously thought that Buss can sign any free agent, but it turns out Buss can only sign unrestricted free agents; ‘restricted free agents’ can only be signed if their home team does not match an offer. That eliminated David Lee, and others. And NY does not want to sign and trade (for example).

So if LO leaves, we can only sign someone to a vet min. (= veteran’s minimum). How many left in the league would want to come to the Lakers, or could work out in our offense? I was suggesting Bruce Bowen. He can hit 3s, and plays great defense, and probably wouldn’t mind playing for a championship team (and, he already has! and won several rings so far).

Can you think of anyone else?

Now, please note, I am not suggesting that we let LO go — I’m concerned that he WILL go, and so I’m suggesting a contingency plan. Isn’t anyone else doing that here on TLN? No GMs out there? What happened to those GM contests you used to have? Nobody has ANY ideas? So, if you don’t, then shut the f*** up and listen to mine, and comment. I’m directing my comments to TLN, and bloggers. Let’s get some debate going, ok? Not just rants and mindless speculation.

  • Please Leave LA Lamar

Don’t everyone forget, we have some expiring contracts that teams will want. All we need is a versitile big man that can defend and rebound for 15 minutes a game. The morrison contract for 4 mil and some change will get us a big backup and we’ll be fine. Go let LO get high somewhere else.

LakerDownUnder – yes, I agree. I think Lakers management is up to something. The waiting game doesn’t make sense. It reduces options for both sides. It’s worse for LO – with Portland signing someone else, it reduces LO’s leverage. With Drew Gooden signing with Mavs, it reduces Buss’ leverage.

    Something else must be happening.

    Shelden Williams
Stromile Swift (i believe no-one sign him yet, i could be wrong)
    Hakim Warrick
    Raef LaFrentz
    Ike Diogu
    Antoine Walker (lol)
    Tim Thomas (my pick)

    No too many choices….

if you see my second post, i meant to say “and i’m not talking about god”

it’s sad that you speak and don’t even realize what you are saying.
why do people buy things when they don’t afford them?
why do they take loans on houses they can’t afford?
a society propelled by the idea that money is the only form of attainting respectable stature breeds stupidity. you are a good example.

and you only make money if you are good at something?
it’s sad how closed off of a world you live in, not only from the present, but from the past as well. the quickest easiest example is van gogh.
