Kupchak, Lakers haven’t done much this summer

DailyNews.com: So Mitch Kupchak, how’s your summer going?

Ah, nothing like a little offseason hullabaloo to really make you really appreciate a nice Caribbean cruise.

Kobe Bryant, most talented player on the planet, has called out Kupchak like he was ready to go one-on-one at the local playground.

Wants the team revamped and overhauled, or at least seriously upgraded. Either that or he wants out, or he doesn’t, but that’s another confusing story.

The bad news for Kobe, I think, is that Kupchak seems pretty happy with the modest moves made thus far in the offseason.

“If this was the team that we started the season off with, I would be fine with it,” Kupchak said. “I feel that we’re an improved team over last year.”

This falls under the “eyes of the beholder” category, the most significant pair of peepers belonging possibly not to GM Kupchak nor owner Jerry Buss, but Lakers superstar Kobe.

Mitch please leave the Lakers ASAP. You are the main reason they’ve been falling behind. If you are satisfied with this roster then you can go to the Atlanta Hawks and get them to the playoffs (with an exit from the first round)!

  • lakerfan81

I hate to say this because I do not like Mitch but some of what he said makes (not all but some) sense. If nothing else I think he has done a good job not responding to the pressure and just making a move to make a move. Particularly one that puts the team in a worst financial situation without improving the team much (the deals that Bird is offering for O’neil). But I do hope something gets done. I would have like him to have gone after Posey (still would) or some other defensive minded wing player. Right now we will just be a first rnd playoff loss again. Thats not really acceptable.

I did not know Mitch was that retarded. Someone needs to fire Mitch fast before he does something stupid or he says more retarded comments. If he accepts this roster he is pretty dumb. You can’t even win a championship with that. He knows we need major work at the power forward position.
I feel that JO is the right answer, without giving up Odom.

At this point, Id rather see a satisfied Mitch, than Mitch trying to make trades. Cuz God know what kind of trades this guy would do.

  • D. Imhoff

My only hope is that Mitch’s comments are for public consumption and inside and privately is going crazy to make a the kind of a deal the Lakers really need! It would not be prudent nor helpful to the Lakers for Mitch to say anything other than what was said in this article. For example I refer to the recent remarks of one Larry Bird. If either of them really wants/needs to make a deal with the other it is not smart to let the other guy see you blink. I am encouraged by Mitch’s remark that the summer is not over, meaning he is waiting for Larry Bird to blink first.

I sometimes want to reach into my computer and get my keyboard and beat the DUMB out of Cupcake.

HE is ALWAYS saying how we are improved, how we have made some moves..how we are better.

Yah, yippeee for not making any moves on a whim…but for crying out loud MITCH dont pat yourself in the back.

This guy is on the threshold of being blind.

Could Kupchak and Bird be working on something behind the scenes?

Almost a week later and there is silence in Laker-and-Pacer-Land. Not even a small rumor of anything from both sides. Now, this could be what it seems and nothing is happening, or could there be some talks going on behind closed doors?

I might just be a hopeful Lakers fan right now who is trying to hang onto any hope we have, but it is possible that a trade could pop out of no-where. There have been trades in history that clubs have kept very quiet, and then they suddenly come out with the deal. Could this be what’s happening with LA and Indiana?

Jermaine O’Neal would obviously love to come to LA anyway, because of his long-time friend Kobe, and he confirmed this in the LA interview (even though he took it back but that was merely Bird’s doing). I’m also certain that Kobe would welcome Jermaine with open arms, and the Lakers front-office know that they need to keep Kobe happy, as if he leaves the Buss’ aren’t going to be selling tickets. If they have any sense at all, they’ll be on the phone to the Pacers everyday, and I think they just might be.

So, this may just be me trying to have faith in my ball club, or there could be some real truth behind all this, and maybe, just maybe, a deal is being worked on right now.

But, I guess only time will tell.

  • lakersfan17

I hate this guy he is so stupid.

  • kisofdeath

improved? improved?!?!? anything is improved when you get rid of smush and sign dfish but thats marginal. its not whether you improved or not its HOW MUCH you’ve improved and we didnt do much that improvision wont get us 5 more wins

  • gugy

Well, Cupcake will pay for his incompetence when Kobe leaves the Lakers.
Then probably this guy will never want to live in LA again. He will be harassed for the rest of his life.
I’ve got to say that Jerry West trusts this guy and seriously for me means our beloved West is just going senile.

If this team stays the same this season you can bet Kobe will be mad and the following season he will demand again for a trade. This time he will not think twice.

  • cyrus

We forget that it isn’t just Mitch alone running the Lakers. There’s also the narcissistic Jimmy Buss using Mitch as a shield to take the heat for his blunders.

About 2 months ago, I listened to Jimmy’s infamous AM570 interview and right than, just listening to this moron talking; I knew Lakers are in trouble. And as you remember, it all started from there with Jeanie coming to AM570 and responding to his brother’s remarks about her boyfriend coach. And later, Kurt Rrambis came to AM570 to defend Phil Jackson and the coaching staff and discredited Jimmy in his interview. The scenery was set and Kobe took a bad example and started his own campaign and the rest is history.

Jerry West left because he saw all of this coming, and he was too proud to be the puppet of a hypocritical, narcissistic bum. Why do you think Kobe called the front office a “mess”???

The days of the “old man” are counted and the power struggle between the heirs is just beginning; on one side is the Jimmy (groomed to be the new owner) and on the other side are Jeanie Buss and Phil Jackson, and in the middle, caught between the heirs, is Mitch Kupchak. Greed for money and power is a nasty and destructive habit of human’s race.

  • gugy

    Cyrus,
You can bet if Kobe leaves Mitch and Jim will be harassed by the rest of their lives.
So maybe both of them should look to move somewhere else together and please by the way take Jerry Buss too.

Magic Johnson should be the new GM and Dr. Buss should pass along the franchise ownership. That would be the best thing for the franchise. Unfortunately this is not going to happen.

  • cyrus

    Gugy,

Yes, It would be nice to get rid of Jimmy, maybe we could trade him to Celtics.haha

Mitch’s salary is about $3-Mil a year (waste of money) and Magic is making probably 10 times that much in his business ventures. However, I wish he would just spend couple of hours a day to give them the very much needed leadership. I think the problem is that Jimmy and Magic can’t along either.

I hope Magic would roundup some investors and just buy the franchise and send the buss family to the eternal vacation.haha

    Wouldn’t that be nice???

I found this article on SI.com

Can you write an article on how bad Mitch Kupchak is? He’s managed to trade one superstar (Shaq), trade Caron Butler, miss out on Jason Kidd and KG, and he might have to trade Kobe. The front office is a mess.
    Rick, Las Vegas

I’m not going to slap Kupchack for dealing Shaq — everyone knows it was Jerry Buss pulling the strings on that one. But dealing Butler for Kwame Brown when even the Swedish papers were calling him a bust was foolish and not pulling the trigger on Kidd when he had the chance was a fatal mistake. But let’s be clear on one thing: the failure of the Lakers right now is a team effort that begins with ownership. If Kobe is moved (and they will never get anything more than 75 cents on the dollar for him) this organization might as well move back to Minneapolis.

  • cyrus

Is this the calm before the storm? Or we are right in the eye of the storm.
    Next week should be interesting.

  • http://www.lakers.com Ed

Cyrus can you say more please. Do you know something or are you just guessing?

    Right on the money man.

Everybody needs to stop blaming Mitch for things hes not really responsible for. Yes, hes made some bad signs and trades, like Caron Butler for Kwame, signing some bad extensions in Cook and Vlad. But its not his fault we didnt get KG, Kidd, or traded shaq.

thank you captain obvious from the daily news

    I can’t ED. Sorry

  • Nikko

Can some of us Laker fans go and raid the Laker FO and hostage Kupcake?? We’ve been waaaaaay too patient with this guy. I mean this is the Lakers, we NEED to win.. that’s all we know.

  • as1084

“If this was the team that we started the season off with, I would be fine with it,” Kupchak said. “I feel that we’re an improved team over last year.”

that quote from mitch kupchake seems very planned. i think he made that statement to give the lakers more leverage with the pacers by saying “if we dont get oneal thats fine because we have already improved this summer. if we got oneal its good and if we dont thats ok too. thats my theory on this quote and article. Or……

    Mitch is a moron.

  • kb24 4life

Please Mitch work on a trade with the pacers , i dont mind if we get rid of 4 or 5 players in exchange for 1 but that one (JO) will give kobe the support he needs and if you don’t give lamar i almost can bid that we make it to the finals…

Its all on your hands mitch you have the entire los angeles looking for what are you going to do with this franchise.

  • Rpoc
This seems at great odds with Kobe the grand competitor. It should be noted, however, he is renowned for his fabulous work ethic and traditionally spends offseasons in early morning practice sessions at the team’s ElSegundo facility.

And he hasn’t practiced there once this offseason.
That’s certainly a great sign. /sarcasm

  • http://www.lakers.com Ed

Kobe has been training though. What does it matter where he trains? The reason why he hasn’t been training at El Seguundo like every other year is because this is his first year in team USA. He is obviously training with his teammates because he has to. And don’t forget that he has lost 20 pounds this off-season, so that means he has been working harder than before. So there is nothing to worry about. The person who wrote this article is trying to make Kobe look bad, just like every other writer out there. NO WORRIES!!!!!
