ESPN: Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant is taking a break from basketball this summer.

In an interview with AOL Fanhouse on Monday, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said Bryant, as well as every other player on the 2008 Olympic team except for Deron Williams and Chris Paul, will not compete in the FIBA World Championships in Turkey.

“It’s a combination of three things: free agency, injuries and having gone hard for a long time,” Colangelo said. “And I’m OK with that.”

Bryant had not decided whether he would play before leaving for South Africa to attend the World Cup, but hinted it was time for a break after his exit interview two weeks ago.

“We’ve been in the Finals now three years in a row,” he said. “We’ve been playing a great deal of basketball, so, this summer for me is about getting healthy. I think that will give us the best opportunity to defend our title again.”

    GOOD! He needs rest.

    • Jeremy

For sure. Our leader needs a rest this summer to heal. We need him to have the bounce back in his step by the beginning of the year. Those nagging injuries were taking their toll this last season.

He better not play. He needs the rest. Who the hell cares about team USA. They don’t need him. If you want to be patriotic join the Army.

Seriously, man, what is with all the quotation marks? Just leave them out and try using a little punctuation. Heck, even without the punctuation it would be easier to read than with all those quotes!

Oh no he di’nt! This dude is seriously cracked if he thinks he gets away with trash talk like that before he even steps on an NBA court! Bynum needs to file that one away in the “Welcome to the League” file. Let’s not forget what happened to Gerald Wallace. And that was accidental.
Hey, isn’t Cousins’ middle name “Sleepswithis”?

      • Wilt2

In the USA Kobe Means Best basketball player ever to walk the earth

  • J (El deber en mi clase de Ingles)

    Kobe,

First of all, congratulations on winning you 5th NBA championship, your second Finals MVP award. With the upcoming Basketball championships in Turkey, the whole world will be watching the United States Mens basketball team ”restore order” to the basketball world once more. It would be wonderful to see you in action. I understand your decision to pass up this chance to don your national colors and carry the hopes of 300 million strong. For the past couple of years, you have never taken a break from basketball. You’ve played through multiple injuries that are enough to topple a normal athlete. Yet, despite all injuries you have suffered, you still dug deep down inside yourself and won an NBA title twice in as many years. You deserve this break. I’m glad that you’ll finally let your body recover from all the wear and tear. It’ll be amazing to see you next season 100 percent. It’s Phil’s final season, hope it’ll be the grandest one yet. Good luck. Have a great off-season.
