ESPN: Rudy Gay led five players in double figures with 28 points and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Los Angeles Lakers 114-111 despite 53 points by Kobe Bryant against the NBA’s worst road team Friday night.

The Lakers lost their second in a row to another of the NBA’s lesser teams, having been beaten by Charlotte on Wednesday night. The latest loss kept them from joining New Orleans and San Antonio in a three-way tie for the Western Conference lead.

Bryant scored 50 or more points for the 23rd time and the second this month. He had 52 against Dallas on March 2. The Lakers fell to 16-7 when he goes for that many.

He was limited to six points in the fourth quarter, when the Lakers nearly erased all of a 10-point deficit. He had 10 rebounds and one assist while taking 37 of the Lakers’ 94 shots. They attempted a franchise record 45 3-pointers, making 15.

Darko Milicic had 22 points and 12 rebounds, Hakim Warrick 16 points, Kyle Lowry 11 and Mike Miller 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who are 6-30 on the road and 2-20 away from home against Western Conference teams.

The Grizzlies led by 10 early in the fourth, their largest lead of the game.

Sasha Vujacic hit a 3-pointer to cut the Lakers’ deficit to 109-106 with 3:03 remaining. Miller missed a 3-pointer, but the Lakers couldn’t convert on their end despite four attempts on the same possession, including one by Bryant.

  • Lakers 24 7

No consistent defense, No dribble penetration, Just take 3′s and hope it goes in, Lakers need help and they need it fast, They have no real defensive presence in the post

  • e

yeah and stupid shot selections down the stretch

  • Lakers 24 7

They were saying that the Lakers play better on the road, are they trying to lose so they play on the road in the playoffs? Cuz at this point in the west it really doesn’t matter if you have home court or not

  • Kobester

Why did the Lakers start off on the wrong side of the court? Aren’t they supposed to have the basket in front of their bench at the first half????

  • http://k1k0.com KiKosDad
  • Mr. Juan / Your Warlock

Disappointing loss….Too bad, considering how great Kobe played….If only ONE more of those 3′s goes in, we escape with a win….Memphis played way over their heads today and the Lakers, except for Bryant, all laid an egg…Hopefully, the Lakers get Gasol back soon and get back to pre-Gasol-injury-form and possibly run the table or close to it.

  • Lakers 24 7

What is up with all these sorry teams playing their ass off trying to beat us, sometimes it’s tough being a Laker lol everybody hates you, but Gasol and Bynum are on the way and we’ll own every bastard team this league has to offer

  • Jack

Only thing I am worried about, SAS is coming back. They just got their 50th for the season, which of course, I had hoped Lakers would get it first in the west.

In the end, it’s all good. It was a grudge match for Memphis, and we are getting gasol back on sunday. It’s still shocking though.

  • as1084

these last two losses are unforgivable!! the lakers should be embarrassed about there last 2 games…PATHETIC!!! how do u lose to the bobcats and grizz both at home???!!! both unforgivable games! the lakers are testing my loyalty right now cause obviously they dont give a crap anymore..and dont give me the injury excuse… the lakers 2nd unit is better then the grizz and bobocats starting unit. so injury excuses arent going to work here! they lakers are fprcing me to question my loyalty towards the organization.

  • mfoznot

These games are meaningless except for the fact that they mean so much. Wait?

  • BEC

This games isnt as bad as some may think. Its just one of those nights offensively. We’re a depleted squad on the block. Chris Mihm had to play for god sakes. Fish has a bad foot and Lamar is really sick.

[Comment ID #30945 Will Be Quoted Here]

I dont think shot selection was bad down the stretch. We had a lot of open looks. Kobe was dishing at the end, only 6 in the fourth, its just shots werent going down. It happens, lamar had a good look at a 3 at the end but didnt go down, Sasha had a lot of good open looks too but didnt go down 4-14 from deep, all though he did rush a couple. This team is too good to shoot below 40% which they did, its just one of those nights. Just move on to the next game.

Home court advantage isnt going to mean much, with the competition in the west, seeding is going to be much more important and who you end up playing. Id rather us be a 4 seed and playing houston(4-0 easy) than hornets (easier beat IMO than suns or spurs, with healthy big men) than a 3 and play suns and spurs.

  • Mr. Juan / Your Warlock

I don’t wish to belittle the rest of the Lakers Squad, but ever since Gasol has gone down, whenever Kobe goes out, it’s like a hope and a prayer that they can at least maintain a lead or stay within striking distance if they’re behind….Furthermore, they need to man up, and if need be, knock some people on their ass….Lately they’ve been playing more like a bunch of sweet, delicate ladies out there…Teams go right through them, like a hot knife goes through soft margarine….When are they going to do something about this?

  • Smush Walton

    Yet another DEBACLE!

I get ill seeing Smush Walton on the floor in the 4th quarter. So many bonehead plays – and no talent!

Someone please tell Lamar NO 3′s! If we are relying on a 3 from Lamar to win, we can forget it. We are keeping him primarily as a rebounder.

Our guard play has really taken a nose dive recently. Farmar is a shadow of what he was earlier in the season. The Machine needs an overhaul – missing way too many 3′s. Even Fisher’s shooting has been pretty bad. He gets dwarfed in the paint and his outside shot is missing in action.

After we bow out in the playoffs this year we need to add at least one more consistent guard. Fisher’s best days are behind him and Jordan and Sasha are too eratic. Also, I can’t believe we have to suffer thru 5 more years of Smush Walton. The way he has been playing this year someone needs to convince him to make his restaurant his full time job.

  • Smush Walton

    What happened to Vlad Rad?
Is he hurt or sick too? He’s another on again off again contributer. We need more consistency!

After this season Gilbert Arenas and Elton Brand are free agents…

  • Mr. Juan / Your Warlock

Yeah, Lamar should never shoot a 3…He should step into his range for a deuce or slash to the basket….His chances of making a deuce are MUCH BETTER than when he attempts to make a trey….Someone, please tell him this!

The dude is a retarded! Why he did not call time out in that last possession?

Why Newbie is not playing? we got this guy for his defensive skills!!!!!!!

  • 24allup inya

And if Gasol doesn’t come back in time for tomorrows game we will fall to the Wiz and fall to 4th or 5th place as well. The Lakers have been jacking up too many 3′s they are fu-ck-ing up………

  • Scarface

I think this injury thing is really taking a toll on us mentally. I might regret saying this but if it wasnt for Luke, we wouldnt have lost by only a couple points.
Think about it.. Luke was the only one that attacked the zone..

  • DCLAKER

DC checking in.It seems they let one get by them again and only thing I can say about the loss is FATIGUE has set in along with injuries and showed big time last night ,especially if your losing to THE WORST ROAD TEAM IN THE NBA(SH#@,Boston almost loss 2 to Minny).

Once Pau or Pau/AB get back all will be forgiven except for what this team will do to their opponents AND WE ALL KNOW HOW THIS TEAM PLAYS ANGRY(ASK PHX AND GS). Next victim,my other team,THE WIZARDS and THE RETURN OF…..CARON BUTLER(let’s trade for’em right before tip-off,BYE-BYE Luke).

  • Kobe Forever

What’s going on with the Lakers man. Kobe scored 53 Points points an they lost to a bad team. it was because the rest of the Lakers were having a BAD night. Lets hope Pau plays on Sunday or the Lakers will run down their Locker rooms crying for help.

  • DCLAKER

Billy Kupchak, you forgot Mickael Pietrus this who the Laker should’ve gotten or get in the off season AND IF I HERE ANYBODY TALK THAT ‘GET ARENAS’ BULLS$%* I’MA REACH THROUGH THIS MONITOR AND……forget it y’all gonna want who y’all anyway but Arenas is a bad deal to make. Lakers will break their own pockets by trying to get Arenas plus I TOLD LAKERNATION LAST WEEK ABOUT ARENAS(HE HAS NO,I MEAN NO DEFENSE). Try to save Laker money by getting 2 for the price of one and it’s already been said alot teams don’t have a whole lot of money to sign “exspensive” free Agents and for real,THEY HAVE TOO MANY PEOPLE WITH THE LAKERS NOW THEY HAVE TO SIGN!

  • MILO

i would not mind getting K-Martin or Gerald Green ehhh!!!!

  • west213

man lakers DON’T play defense. common all the nooby players would run inside the paint, score and get a foul. common now..
and sasha u f uckin gay s hit stop taking soo many trees that you cant even make. took like 15 trees made only 3…

  • DCLAKER

For me, at the PG position:”White Chocolate” J.Williams(Make’em play the way he did when he shook Gary Payton)

    SG:Kevin Martin

    SF:Corey Maggette

    PF:Chris Wilcox

C/PF:JO!JO!(I DON’T CARE HOW HURT HE IS,BETTER THAN MIHM)

If could only have or afford 2,Kevin Martin or Corey Maggette(back up Kobe),JO(Back Bynum or Pau)and I’d get Gerald Green,as a bonus, hopefully he comes to Laker Summer League or sign him and put him in D-League to work on IQ(he has tooooooo much talent to be wasting).

I left Pietrus off ’cause I wanted to be fair to the list at hand.

What you fail to mention is that most of these players are RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS – meaning their current teams have the option to match any offers and can also resign them to a higher contract.

  • goodfella

this team is simply being exposed for the lack of big men they don’t have in the middle. rest assured we will win tomorrow with or without gasol, but we will lose against the blazers if we don’t get gasol back

  • drake hunter

You mean to tell me a great perimeter defender and rebounder like Ira Newble couldn’t even see any action (even one minute) against two of the worst teams in the league. Is the triangle really that hard to grasp or is Luke Walton that good in Phil Jackson eyes. I wonder what Laker management is thinking now about keeping our two big key 7 footers out for sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long. Maybe when we’re battling Denver for the final playoff spot on the last day of the season, they might bring at least one of them back.

  • sepehr

The lakers will bounce back against the wizards, Kobe will make sure of that after 2 stupid losses. Kobe should have had easily 7 assists if people were making threes. Sasha shot 14 3 pointers!!!!!!!!
As for off season acquisitions I think the team is fine the way it is but we just need a person Like Pietrus who can play the 2 and 3 and can also defend. He wouldnt cost more than 5-7M a season and the lakers should try and make it happen.

  • DCLAKER

What about getting “White Chocolate” Jason Williams(Miami Heat)this off season, him and Kobe would be on ESPN every damn for highlights.

  • pjt

I think the problem may be is our role players have just about reached their limit as starters…and being forced to make key plays. We need Pau, Bynum, and Ariza back ASAP.

Sorry but Sasha, needs to take less shots, Space cedit needs to wake up and get his head in the game, Walton needs to go back to the fundementals, and he needs to get his head in the game as well…

again this may be a result of our role players having their roles increased…

Got to give the team a little credit for at the very least staying near the top…but enough is enough, we need our team at full strength, enough said…

  • Mr. Juan / Your Warlock

Lakers better learn to ATTACK THE ZONE, or else they will shoot 35% for the game, and the other team will score 90%, of the 65% missed shots, from the long rebounded fastbreaks….WORD!

  • Kobe08-09

We were Over Confidnece, trust me this lost is good for us. From here and on we will play much better and win some good games. We play much better on the road which is a good thing in the playoffs. But we have to win games at home if we get home court advantage.
