I took a few things away from the USA vs. Spain gold medal game.

The one that sticks out the most is that Team USA would NOT have won the gold without the one and only Kobe Bryant.

It took the final game of the Olympics to truly test this “Redeem Team”, it took the gold medal game to see if this team is truly the best in the world.

They proved that, and it’s not like we needed any more reassurance. However, Kobe Bryant also proved that he is the best on the planet, and one of the biggest pieces Team USA needed to regain gold, and solidify the United States as the finest in the world.

The respect is un-matched, and with all the talent on that USA team, and all the big names that are asked to carry their respective NBA teams, everybody knew when it came down to it, the star of stars would be Kobe Bryant, and he would lead them to the promise land.

Some of us wondered if Kobe would ever put his stamp on these Olympics, if indeed he would ever prove that he is the best of the best. When team USA needed him, he stepped up. When the rest were lost, he was there to guide them. When the team was looking for answers Kobe stepped up to the challenge.

Kobe Scored 13 points in the fourth and final quarter, being more aggressive in the final minutes, after Coach K told Kobe, “Let the Mamba loose.”

Spain was a great competitor, the previous meeting they would lose to Team USA by 37, this time there was more on the line, and Spain definitely rose to the challenge.

Someone who definitely rose to the challenge was Kobe’s Lakers teammate Pau Gasol, he had an impressive effort, and it was nice to see him more aggressive and going at Dwight Howard, after being labeled soft after the lackluster performance in the NBA finals.

As a diehard Lakers fan, and a proud USA citizen, it was great to finally see Team USA back on top where they belong, no matter what the media said, USA is the pinnacle of basketball talent.

The USA flag was raised in the air, higher then both Spain and Argentina, and the national anthem played, it was an emotional time for Kobe, all those involved with USA basketball, and any patriotic American. It sure feels good to be back on top!

Congratulations to Kobe, Team USA, and our man Pau for a great effort.

What do you think? Does Team USA win this game without the killer instinct and immense talent of Kobe Bryant? Were you impressed with Team USA’s effort throughout the Olympics? We want your take! Sound off in comments

I love this quote: “Coach K told Kobe, “Let the Mamba loose.”” Further justifies

  • Daryl Imhoff

Congradulations USA! The best two players in this game were Kobe for the USA and Pau for Spain. Now, add Bynum and Lamar and Fisher with Shasha and Farmar and Vlad and Josh Powell and the Lakers are one excellent NBA team.

  • SliqRiq

Kobe “The Black Mamba” showed the world why he is THE BEST EVER!!!!

    Lebron is closing in

  • Lakers 24 7

Kobe was hittin clutch shots, dishin out assists, blocking shots..THE MAMBA, THE DOBERMAN, KOBE BEAN BRYANT!!!!!!!

LeBron might be the leader, but Mr.Bryant shows why “Clutch” is his middle name KOBE CLUTCH BRYANT lolll

  • Lakers 24 7

I also gotta give props to Wade, he came up big for USA also

  • E-ROC

Wade is definitely back. That is downright scary. Lebron keeps getting better and better. This NBA season should be fun to watch. Will Gasol bring that sort of toughness and aggressiveness to the NBA? Probably not. *Sighs* The team played great. I wonder who will comeback for 2012 and who the new faces will be.

  • KOBEISKING

    Kobe’s 4 point play = F U to all haters out there

  • http://hzmdesigns.com hZm

I love how Kobe stinked it up all along — but because of that 4th quarter, people will remember him as the top reason we won. Hahaha!

Kobe got the loudest cheer in the ceremony. Spain got MAMBAFIED or MAMBALIZED lol

    hoopshype article:
From my notes… 7:58 — Kobe hits a two on a tough drive into the paint. USA leads 93-89. 7:25 — Kobe drives into the paint and finds an open Deron Williams on the wing, standing in Sasha Vujacic’s spot, for a three. USA leads 96-89. 6:47 — Kobe gets the ball under the rim to Dwight Howard for an emphatic flush. USA leads 98-89. Then Rudy Fernandez hit a three, and Kobe answered right back. Team USA finally put Spain away for good with 3:10 left, when Kobe hit a three, got fouled by Rudy Fernandez (his fifth, sending him to the bench) and then Kobe completed the four point play. SLAM

Redeem team? Hell no, Re-Dream team.

  • BEC

Kobe is definitely the best of the best. No question. Every key possession down the stretch Kobe had a hand in it. The best always step up when it really counts.

Would team USA win this game and gold without Kobe? Of course they would. To say they would have NOT won this game without Kobe is crap. Obviously no doubt Kobe put it on himself to get this win, this aint the lakers, this is TEAM USA, Team USA is 12 deep, TWELVE MAN DEEP, anyone of those guys wouldve come through down the stretch Wade hit big shots all day especially in the end, Paul was making great plays all day, Lebron is still a beast, or anyone, all are capable of making big plays. First option is obviously the best and thats Kobe, Lebron said it himself, he knows when it comes to close game whos going to take the big shots and thats Kobe, and Kobe showed everyone why hes the best.

Wade’s gonna be a beast again in the NBA :0.

Kobe was freakin amazing though, that was the perfect time to show how good he was.

  • DCLAKER

ONE OF THE GREATEST GAMES I HAVE EVER SEEN IN ‘ANY’ SPORT…INCREDIBLE.I could’ve believe I stayed just to watch, glad I did,get up at 2:30 et and staying up ’til they got the gold around their necks…I WANNA SEE IT AGAIN!!!

Gotta give Spain all the credit in the world,THOSE GUYS CAME TO PLAY,GASOOOOOOOOL!

  • lakerschamps09

its just great that we got gold medal.. and its even sweeter that kobe was the one that pulled us to victory cuz when the stakes were high kobe let the mamba loose as coack K told kobe “let the mamba loose” lol but yea im sure they coulda won if kobe was not there but we’ll never know will we ahahhaah soo in the clutch kobe showed up and just dominated and yea give credit to wade and that 3 he hit to hit the nail a lil more down into the coffin… but we won sooo yessssirrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • Lo12

To ban Phil Jackson didnt said LET THE MAMBA LOOSE to kobe douring the nba finals

  • MILO

Kobe came through when everyone else were standing pat looking scared!!!

  • ab4sure

Kobe came through in the clutch. The unsung hero is Dwade. With both Lebron and Kobe on the bench Wade scored 21 first half points and kept the team ahead in the first half. He also hit a cluth 3 with 2 minutes left in a 4 point game. He shot 67% from the field for the entire olympic games… with some great D.

  • lakerschamps09

yea ab u rite wade was great.. but he gambled on a lot of his steals and with the spain pg play being young and stupid they played rite into wades steals… im not taking nothing away from wade but just cuz u get steals dont mean thats great d or u a defensive player.. thats just cherry on top.. but like i said we won as a TEAM

  • Ivan

Kobe says he wants to play in London 2012, and I think he will. He’s not the person that will let his game deteriorate even as he gets up there in age.

I think Team USA wil be better in London 2012 with Greg Oden in the post to go with Bosh and Howard, and defensively, that’s scary. I also expect to see Kevin Durant and O.J. Mayo.

And one more thing, Portland is going to be pretty darn good with Roy, Oden and Rudy Fernandez. Man, Fernandez can play. I hate to face those guys, especially since we always have trouble winning in the Rose Garden.

  • joe

Kobe clutch final rush was amazing. He is the best, no doubt about it.

I am also impressed with the Spaniards. Those european guys were close enough to win one of the best team USA ever at the Olympic Games. Probably the best american team after 1992 Dream Team and 1960 Robertson, Russell and West.

Portland did a great trade with Rudy Fernandez. And of course the 17 year old Ricky Rubio is a gem. Would like to see him in L.A

Portland is good, but the Lakers are BETTER!
Portland is full of a bunch of rookies. THEY ARE GOOD ROOKIES, but for now they ARE rookies. The Lakers might be the youngest team with the most experience, after this season of course.

Other teams are happy with the additions or drafts they made, but the Lakers got a rising Andrew Bynum coming back, a sharp shooting Vujacic that plans on getting better, a lock down defender in Ariza, Farmar yet to have a break out season, Odom with the size of a Forward but handles of a guard, a Pau Gasol that yesterday showed he isn’t afraid of contact, and the greatest of them all..THE MAMBA!

Pau Gasol was owning Dwight Howard. Not good for USA but good as a Los Angeles Laker.

Glad the tournament is over. USA has the gold and people can stop talking about how USA can’t win gold. Now I’m looking forward to Laker training camp!

    USA!

  • DCLAKER

    NOW THE SEASON BEGINS…..

  • Mitch4Pres

kobes 4 pt play was the highlight of the game sooooo beastly

  • Micah

They definitely wouldn’t have won without Kobe, but I think that’s not the point. The point is that we brought the gold back to the US and did it as a team. We weren’t a bunch of superstars, we were truly a team. You could say we wouldn’t have won without Kobe and the same could have been said for Wade or Lebron. People need to realize that it’s not about how much Kobe scored or whether we would have won without him. The real meaning of this was that as a team we restored the glory and pride back to US basketball.

He had 18 steals and played solid for the whole olympic games. Kobe gets the mvp for this game but would he have gotten a chance to win it if not for Wade’s 21 first half points and his clutch 3 ptr near the end of the game. Wade is definitely the MVP of the team for these games.

  • razz

D Wade was great. Great game, and great win for the USA. But we are not heat fans baby…. We Lakers!!! Kobe!!…lol

Belated Happy Birthday Black Mamba!!! Not a bad birthday present, a Gold Medal! USA! USA! USA! On a side note, I think whoever drafts the kid Ricky Rubio in 2010 will be very lucky, this kid is the real deal.

  • Michael_23

I DVR’ed this game and put it on DVD. I watched the 4th quarter like 5 times already. It was an awesome gold medal game.

  • maccassedy

    kobe shud have 2medals…….
“The thing is they got guys that are willing to make a three-year commitment, which I think is tremendous,” Brown said of this current Team USA. “We had guys that committed (for 2004) and then all of a sudden 9/11 happened, and then there were injuries.”
Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen all made late withdraws for various reasons. thas y dat article said kobe was on da blame 4 04

  • xtro

That’s why he is the best and better than all the rest.

  • Phil

In response to Freshh : Lebron still has a long way to go. Brute force along won’t get it. Kobe = Best On The Planet.

I have a really funny story.

I had spent the night at my friends house and we slept before the game was over.(which I really badly wanted to watch) When we got up and went into the kitchen, my friend’s dad had left a note. The note said:

    “8 minutes to go.
    U.S.A. up by 2.
    What time is it?”

My friend replied with “Kobe Time.” Haha.

  • ilovekb24

kobe has just shown us what is coming this season.
i can’t freaking wait. LET THE MAMBA LOOSE!

  • ilovekb24

    also, i’d like to add:

Defintely. I was watching the team usa 2008 olympics road to redemption episodes and even the coaches said that kobe set the defensive pace of the team and showed to win, you need to put in hard work. WOOT KOBE !
