Jerry WestESPN: Kobe Bryant isn’t happy with the Lakers’ direction and wants Jerry West back in Los Angeles to fix things.

Bryant told ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher that he wants the Lakers to bring West back to the organization and give him full authority. If the Lakers don’t want to do that, Bryant said he wants to be traded.

Bryant is frustrated that the team has not made any significant moves since it re-signed him.

“I want to see us get to a contending level,” he told The Los Angeles Times. “I want to see us become a championship contender. It’s been a frustrating process for me and I’m sure it’s been a frustrating process for all Laker fans. I’m just hoping we can get to that level. I’m still frustrated. I’m waiting for them to make some changes.

Mitch Kupchak is the current Lakers general manager.

  • Kid

I don’t think that line up is even possible. You have to remember that the Lakers are over the cap and having injuries to Kwame and Odom makes things a lot harder to trade those guys. I think that a better solution to helping Kobe would be to do a sign and trade for Jermaine O’neal and get another shooting gaurd in the draft. I think that you get rid of Sasha, Mckie, Smush, Cook, and Radmanovic, Brown. Someone will like Smush he just wore out his welcome in LA. Someone wants some expring contracts. Mihm may still be a competent back up. I dont think that trade Bynum unless you are getting a big man in return and it needs to be a quality big man because Bynum has already displayed that he could have great potential. If LA does not make a splash this year I hate to see what it would mean for Kobe in LA.

This is mind blowing news if Kobe actually told Bucher this because up till this point he has only demanded better personnel and if he truly did say he wanted to be traded if Jerry West doesn’t return with full authority, then we are really going to be in for a roller coaster ride here in LA. A couple of things strike me, first – I think if Kobe really wants someone like KG perhaps he should also look at how Garnett conducts himself. I say this because I like the idea of picking up Garnett not only because he is a magnificent basketball player, but also a very classy guy who in the midst of all the s**t he’s put up with – he still remains loyal. In today’s NBA loyalty is a luxury and not a requirement. It is fairly common knowledge that much of the demise of the quality filled Laker team of 99-04 has much to do with Bryant not requesting a resigning of Shaq or Phil. Second thing is that Jerry Buss is not going to be pleased at all if this true. He does not like to be undercut by employees – especially employees he’s broken his back over to keep. Perhaps Kobe hasn’t matured to the level needed to be a true leader and perhaps these are his true colors showing – in which case it just might be better to trade him. I have to admit I was bitter towards the man after ‘The Breakup’ – but he grew back on me and I thought maybe he is finally becoming an adult. Let’s hope that Kobe’s demand was not true, yet let us also hope that Jerry Buss does make the right move and bring West back and demote his son and Kupchak.

  • rmeazy82

How can you be mad at Kobe for saying that? We stink right now and have for the last 3 years. Kobe is the best player in the leauge and your trying to tell me that Kupchak and Buss can’t put a group of better players around him? I say we try to resign Luke, Turiaf, keep Evans, Farmar, Odom, maybe even resign Mihm with Kobe. Everyone else that wasn’t mentioned they could be parts of another teams puzzle we don’t need them. Get Artest, try to get J.O, sign Grant Hill and get a point guard who can make good descisions AND PLAY DEFENSE. Bottom line is we need to make it happen soon because its getting harder and harder being a laker fan when you know they can’t even compete with the top teams in the NBA. The suns get better every year, the warriors got better, the blazers are probably gonna get Oden, what are we doing for ourselves? We sign guys who have potential but want to Snowboard, or not use a sky-hook, not want to play in the post, can’t hit open jumpers, question Phil Jackson when they are blessed to have on a Laker uniform. Please bring West back because we are letting Kobes great years go to waste.

  • JK

It’s a business. The laker’s office has done a shitty job since West left, and Kobe needs to be doing this to get some kind of results. You have to make some risky decisions to build championship contenders. West did it with Shaq, Kupchak/Buss have shown that they are too scared. They have shown that they do not have the balls to finish deals on ‘risky’ players, IE Baron davis, Boozer, Kidd.

Lets remember what the big plan was for the ‘rebuilding’ of the lakers… They said the summer of ’07 would be the big offseason signing.. that has obviously failed. Even with Grant’s huge contract coming off the books, we are still at or above the cap number. Because of Kwame’s contract, which kupchak messed up, the plan for ’07 failed almost immediately.

There has to be heavy action taken.

I WANT A BIG MAN IN LA AND JERRY WEST BACK! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Edward Li

It would be a good thing if Kobe is out and We can finally rebuild this organization. Have you guys ever watched the games when Kobe took over and still lost the game? it was not pretty. I love Kobe with all my Heart, but i think its best for both him and the Lakers to go seperate ways.

  • 08kb24

I feel that Kobe needs to restructure his contract so that will open up some cap room to bring in a higher profile player. I don’t want him to leave and true enough Ill be a fan forever but if he wants to get to that next level he has to come off that 88.6 million he has remaining on his contract

lisen u dumb ass lakers fans ima give u what da lakers and i know there cap heres what they need to do………………………They are still paying Brian Grant thats major problems he dosent play on there team……they need to find a way to solve that for more cap space………..Mitch Kupchack needs to go and get Jerry West back………trade Kwame Brown and a sencon round pick for Artest………..now i know it might not work if he has a surgary but we hav to try…………..lamar,Sasha Vujacic, auron Mckie for Pau Gasol or Oneal………… i do my rest later

TheEclectic is stupid fo real man…..u dont know basketbal…..because Garnett is so loyalt o his team HE WILL NEVER WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THEM!!!!! Geth that thru your mind, and with Mitch kuptchak as GM LAKERS WILL NEVER WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP EITHER, AND WONT GET ANYTHING DONE……Im glad kobe said this, and most of u laker fans anywayz take advantage of having a player like KOBE, maybe he should leave, so that way 5 years from now, you’ll look back and wish he had stayed…..who do u think would reach a championship first KOBE or the LAKERS??????…….KOBE…….if Lakers loose kobe, its over…..might as well get the moving truck and go back to M.P.L.S. were talkin bout no ticket sales, no 31 jersey, the #1 player is no longer on your team, no fans, no celebs, and no jack nicholson…..Phil jackson would leave also…..he came back JUST FOR KOBE…..If kobe wasnt a true leader, then he wouldnt have said anything, and let his team still sucked next year, and be the next KG….Loyal to a team that is a fault……Lakers Organization are the ones that promised lakers would be a contender, not kobe….so shut your mouth,a nd get ur facts right…..PEACE
    KOBE ALL THA WAY

  • ben_the Lakers Fan

I disagree with you Edward Li, we’ve been trying to rebuild for the last 2 yrs and it still dont look like we could accomplish anything, plus having a dumb GM like Kupcake doesnt help.. not everyone can be a good GM, look at Isiah Thomas, hall of famer , but sure sucks as GM..
Jerry has proven himself time & time again, he’s not perfect but a hell of a lot better than Mitch..
Jerry will be avail by July 1st, Buss needs to get on the phone now ! and ask him out to lunch, bring Kobe.. by then we’ll probably know how long Odom & Kwame will be out, hopefully Brown doesnt need the ankle reconstruction & looks good to other GM’s ..
So Mr Buss, and thats the other Jerry, do your part & call West, nothing is impossible..
Make the Lakers great Again !

Well attacking me isn’t going to help your argument, neither is the poor grammar and spelling. The bottom line is that even with Jerry West it took 10 years after our 88 championship to get back into contention. These types of things don’t happen overnight or even in a couple of years (look how long it has taken Chicago and Detroit to get back into contention since their ’90 and ’98 championship respectively). You also have to take into consideration the fact that Kobe in a way knew that the team would suck for a few years since he was integral in Shaq’s departure and indirectly Karl Malone’s. I’m not saying that management has been good – they haven’t. They have done stupid things like adding Vladamir Radmanovic for far too much. They traded Caron Butler, then they extended Kwame’s contract – thus keeping us from having any cap space this summer. Then they didn’t void Radmanovic’s contract when he breached it. Kobe has a legitimate bone to pick with the administration – all I am saying is that it should be a conversation done behind closed doors. I’m not saying Kobe shouldn’t say anything – I’m saying it should be done with some class. UNLESS – this is a ploy by the management and Kobe to try to lure West back and still let Kupchak and Jim Buss kind of fall back into the shadows without so much embarrassment. Because let’s face it – if West were to be signed tomorrow without Kobe having said anything it would be very embarrassing for Kupchak and Jim Buss to have to be demoted – but if it were done to soothe an angry star player threatening to leave ala Kobe then it would make more sense. Here’s to hoping West actually does return and also to the Lakers return to glory. Personally in my dreams I am hoping for a Artest or Gasol pickup along with Kidd this summer then a Garnett addition the following year after an opt-out and for something affordable. Pipe dreams I’m sure – but if it were to come true could be a team that could run off a string of championships we haven’t seen since Michael Jordan in the 90s.

The NBA doesn’t allow restructuring of contracts.

    3. Can players restructure their contracts down like in the NFL?

No. Magic did that in the past but that was under an old CBA. Under the current CBA you are not allowed to restructure an existing contract down. Shaq cant take a pay cut in his existing deal. He can sign an extension for less money like KG did . . . in theory.

Sorry for the spam but I just read this on LATimes.com and thought it would clear some “facts” up:
    http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakers28may28,1,3711739.story?coll=la-headlines-sports-nba-lakers

Bryant said he did not link his future with the Lakers to the hiring of West, as ESPN.com reported Sunday. He has not asked for a trade and did not foresee seeking one if West was not hired.

“I would love for him to be a part of this,” Bryant said. “But it’s not something where I demand he comes here. All I can do is offer my thoughts. I love being a Laker. I want to retire a Laker. I want to fix this thing, or at least help any way I can.”
    —————————————————————–

I guess we can all thank ESPN for doing a piss-poor journalism job… for the umpteenth time and raising unnecessary hay.
