Kobe Bryant has one major goal in mind – DEFENSIVE player of the year.

BostonSports.com: “I’ve always wanted to play defense,” he said. “I’ve always prided myself on that.”

Now, he’s hoping to take the next step at the defensive end.

“This year, I made it a top priority of mine to win Defensive Player of the Year more than anything,” he said, “because I understand that being able to lead my team by example, by playing that kind of defense, that that will inspire my teammates to do the same.”

kobe is the man…… i wish other lakers would have as much heart as him!

  • ab4sure

there are others who have as much heart just not as much talent.

  • Thomas

He is physically capable of winning that award but it has a habit of goneing to big men. And I think that throughout the LakerNation its unanimous that Kobe should have won the MVP and the rest of the NBA doesn’t like him and that didn’t happen and that might be the case with this one.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Too bad that are too many phantom Laker fans here, who in reality are only Kobe-worshipers.

I, unlike you, am A TRUE LAKER FAN. I will love the Lakers whether Kobe is here or not. What I am tired of is all these pathetic Kobe worshipers loving this man who has prevented the Lakers from succeeding . Yes, the FO is to blame for some bad trades, but Kobe is also to blame and none of you Kobe worshippers realize it.

Example 1: Kobe is the reason why the Lakers traded Shaq. Now you Kobe worshipers are going to say, “oh you’re just listening to ESPN and Shaq sucks this year”. Yes, Shaq does suck this year, however, his first two years in Miami, he did pretty damn well (a championship included). Just imagine if Shaq had stayed. That would’ve been two years of Kobe and Shaq competing for championships. Now you’re asking, how did Kobe contribute to Shaq being traded, easy…the Lakers needed to trade Shaq to re-sign Kobe (remember he was a free agent that summer). If the Lakers did not trade, Kobe would NOT have resigned with the Lakers, that’s why the Lakers needed trade Shaq so quickly. In addition, if the Lakers do not trade Shaq, Kobe leaves most likely to the Clippers, not the Bulls (that summer Kobe even said it’s between the Lakers and the Clippers), and because Shaq wanted more money from Buss, Shaq would’ve opted out the following year, leaving the Lakers Kobe-less & Shaq-less. So trading Shaq appeased Kobe, therefore he resigned. Thinks about it, was it just a coincidence that Kobe signed his 7 year deal, the day after the Lakers traded Shaq? Kobe still had a dominate Shaq and he threw it away because he was “tired of being sidekick”. Shaq even said, they could play togther. Shaq said, we didnt’ get along for 3 years but we still won. Even the great Magic Johnson told Kobe to get along with Shaq because Kobe needed him.

Example 2: Kobe is the reason KG is not here. Had Kobe not bashed the Laker orgnization and asked to be traded, KG would be here. KG even said, because of the Kobe situation, L.A. was not an option. Now I understand Kobe was frustrated, but as a professional, YOU DO NOT BASH YOUR ENTIRE ORGANIZATION AND THROW YOUR TEAMMATES UNDER A BUS THE WAY HE DID. He had another guy in KG that wanted to win championships, but because opened his big mouth he f’d it up and killed any hopes of landing KG (he killed any negotiating power the Lakers had).

Example 3: Kobe has yet to rescind on his trade request and has yet to say he wants to remain a Laker. Why do you think the Lakers can’t go out and make a significant trade and probably won’t sign a major free agent next summer? Think about it, if the Lakers do go out and make a significant trade this year or sign a free agent next year to a decent deal, and then Kobe opts out after next season, the Lakers will be stuck with probably a huge contract that would take up cap space that could be used to sign a major player like Lebron or Wade in 3 years when their deals are up. After next season, LO’s contract is up (that’s $14M next year) and should Kobe opt-out, which he most likely will (remember he has yet to say he wants to remain a Laker), that would be an additional $20M, for a total of $34M off the books after the 08/09 season. The Lakers cannot risk signing/trading for a player with a big contract in the event Kobe’s opts out. The cap space in 08/09 (should Kobe opt-out) is huge if the Lakers go after Lebron or Wade after the 09/10 season. Kobe is holding up the Lakers.

These are just three examples, of how the best player in the NBA (and he is the best player in the NBA, I never said he wasn’t) is a curse as well as a blessing. The quicker you Kobe worshipers realize it, the sooner you will realize that Kobe is also to blame for the fall from championship contention.

Foxxy – wake up and see reality.

LakersFirst must really be Jimbo Buss in disguise.

YEAH YOUR RIGHT…LAKER FIRST IS JIM BUSS IN DISGUISE….BECAUSE WE LIKE KOBE DOESNT MEAN WE ARE WORSHIPERS ….WE JUST KNOW THIS GUY HAS MAD SKILLS…AND BRINGS HIS “A” GAME EACH AND EVERY NIGHT!!!

  • LakersFirst

I too agree that Kobe is a very skilled player (I never ever said he wasn’t), but what I see everyone is here ragging on the other Laker players thinking they don’t have any desire to win, when it actuality they do. Just because they aren’t as skilled as Kobe doesn’t mean they don’t have the desire to win.

Then there are those “fans” that think Kobe can do no wrong, when in reality, he’s done many things wrong, on the court and off the court, to hurt the Laker organization (please see my three examples above). Again, he is a player that is a curse and a blessing. Most Kobe worshipers buy into that crap that Buss “lied” to Kobe about building a contender, which is complete crap because Jerry Buss, the owner who helped bring 8 championships to the city of Los angeles does NOT like to lose. Now you’re going to say that Jerry West built those teams…not so fast my friends, Jerry Buss, the OWNER, has to approve any trades and signings. Buss is the one that told West to bring Shaquille O’Neal to the Lakers AT ANY COST. Buss is the man that told West to hire Phil Jackson as the head coach, when Jerry West did not want Phil as the coach.

You guys may be willing to forgive and forget the negative things Kobe has done to the Lakers, but true fans know. As many great things he has done to help L.A. win games, he’s also done many great BAD things that prevented the Lakers from improving (again see my examples from above). I’m not that quick to forget, no real Laker fan is.

Lastly, you guys are probably the same guys that trashed Jim Buss and Mitch Kupcake, for making bad trades (which they have done – all GM’s do), but have you guys ever praised them for drafting players like Luke Walton, Jordan Farmar (who now everyone loves), Javaris Crittenton (who according to Phil is going to a major player on this team), Ronny Turiaf, or Andrew Bynum who is practically averaging a double double at the age of 20 (no, you guys were the probably the same idiots who said we should trade Byumum for JO). Again, I remember, true Laker fans do!

Lakers First or shall i say true lakers fan your a F>U>C>K>I>N idiot… you dont understand that you can be a laker fan and hate what kind of no heart team they put together since shaq left.

Listing you F>U>C>K>I>N DUMB SHI*T, there is a reason for the team we have and his name is KOBE BRYANT (do I have to say it again, No Shaq because of Kobe, no KG because of Kobe – 2 future of hall of famers because of Kobe).

You hate on the rest of the Lakers I’m going to f*ckin hate on Kobe Bryant for what’s done to the Lakers. As great as he is, he is the reason the Lakers haven’t been able to bring in the talent he is b*tching for. Wake and smell the f*ckin coffee, idiot!

STOP BLAMING KOBE FOR THE FRONT OFFICE MESS…..TRUTH IS THEY RATHER KEEP BUCKS IN THEIR POCKETS INSTEAD OF GETTING GOOD TALENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!LAKERS HAVE BEEN GETTING OF CHEAP FOR YEARS NOT PAYING WELL….EVEN DURING MAGIC AND KAREEM DAYS….THAT IS NO SECRET!!!! HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A TRUE LAKER FAN???? LAST FEW YEARS OR SO?????

  • ab4sure

[Comment ID #18031 Will Be Quoted Here]

The truth is … just a couple of weeks ago before they traded cook the lakers were paying over 70 million in payroll. That is within 2-3 million of being in the top 5 in payroll. Yeah they could sign bad contracts like the knicks and get over 100 million. As far as payroll is concerned you need to get your fact straights. also if Minny would have done that deal with kg for LO, Bynum, and others(which was a better offer) then they would have been close to 80 million. So is the FO willing??? Yes Are your facts straight? NO

  • LakersFirst

[Comment ID #18034 Will Be Quoted Here]

ab4sure is absolutely correct – FOXXY YOU HAVE TO GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!! The Lakers have had one of the highest payrolls for the past few years (championship years included). They offered Shaq the max contract when the signed him in ’96 and then gave him an extension. The year before they traded him, they offered him another extension of $45M for an additional 2 years but he declined. So don’t give me this bullsh*t that the Lakers aren’t willing to pay the money.

ab4sure is also right about KG, the Lakers were willing to pay him but Kobe destroyed that dream when he cried and b*tched like a little girl and bashed the Laker organization, bashed his teammates, then asked to be traded. “L.A. wasn’t an option because of the Kobe situation” – KG

The Lakers were cheap during the Kareem/Magic days??? Now you’re making sh*t up, which makes you look clueless. The Lakers paid their players in their 80’s very well – Magic, Kareem, Worthy – why do you think all retired as Lakers?

Yes, I am true Laker fan – I will support the Lakers even if they went 0-82. I saw the Lakers win championships and I supported them when they had bad years during the 90’s. Then when the Lakers won their title in 2000, the fact that I supported them during the down years made that championship that much sweeter. I am a die hard Laker fan (I just don’t support them when they win). I support the Lakers Win or Lose.

Foxxxy is clearly a clueless unrealistic fan that thinks throwing money will solve the Laker problems. He’s probably the type of fan that thinks the Lakers can trade players like Mihm, Sasha for Lebron James (“c’mon DO IT MITCH). You f’n idiot!

  • MJ23KB08

You people are absolutely crazy. Calm down! Geeze. Personally, I don’t give a crap about the Lakers. I follow PLAYERS in the NBA, not teams. Since Michael Jordan left the NBA Kobe Bryant is the next best thing, so I cheer for him. I don’t care where he goes or if he stays. If he’s a laker, I’ll cheer for the Lakers. If he’s a Bull, I’ll cheer for the Bulls. I kind of hope that he leaves LA just to teach Jerry Buss a lesson. He has CONSISTANTLY made bad decisions for the past few years. Not the past decade or anything like that bc he HAS made good decisions in the past. Recently, he’s been stupid. Especially this year. Over the summer the Kobe trade demand thing cooled down and it looked like things were okay again….and then Buss opened his mouth. If that moron had kept his mouth shut then there wouldn’t be so much tension. Right now Kobe wants to leave bc he feels like LA WANTS him to leave. Who’s fault is that? JERRY BUSS! Personally, I hope he goes to Chicago so he can get away from the drama of LA and so I can cheer for the Bulls again. I miss the days of Jordan……

  • Chris

Kobe is the best player of his era. He has same pts per game as jordan (over fewer years) less assists, less rebounds, less 3 pt and fg percentage. His vertical leap is a lot less. Jordan was 4 ft. Insane. But he is definitely best of his era. Would love to see him go to bulls!! It would be the ultimate respect to jordan. He just needs a pippen. Who doesn’t
