HOOPSWORLD: Negotiations are reportedly going nowhere between the Atlanta Hawks and restricted free agent Josh Smith. Smith is hoping for an annual salary in excess of $10 million while the Hawks are reluctant to meet his price.

At this stage, it looks like the Hawks best bet might be to sign and trade Josh Smith. Sekou Smith of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution indicated that a “Western Conference power” and an “Eastern Conference big dog” have already submitted offers to the Hawks, and that the team is currently in the process of weighing those offers.

This can’t help but make one wonder who exactly the teams are that Sekou Smith was referring to. Could the LA Lakers be the “Western Conference powerhouse” poised to make a play for Smith?

Well, the Lakers could offer Lamar Odom to the Hawks and take back Smith and point guard Speedy Claxton, provided the deal Smith signs with Atlanta before being traded is enough to match salaries given his BYC status. The move would give the Lakers the defensive presence it lacked in the Finals against the Boston Celtics, and it would also provide the Hawks with a good player and an expiring contract in Odom valued at over $14 million.

  • lakerfan81

Josh Smith is one of the most talented young players in the league. Their are some issues with work ethic, but I have always thought that if would put forth the effort he could be a star.

I don’t this will happen though because of the financial implications. The Lakers are in luxury tax hell and my take on the situation is that they are not going to be willing to take on a large long term contract in place of Odom because of the looming pay raise for Bynum and to a lesser extent Ariza and Farmar.

  • mar

    do it mitch.

  • king.manu

they will take that contract because resign lamar next year would be much harder!

i hope we can get smith without giving up lamar. i love josh but on the other hand i love lamar in la and he is very important for the lakers. i would hate to see lamar go but i think i would welcome smith. hard one, but is think i would take smith. sorry lamar

  • e

this guy is freakishly athletic..i really think he’s talented as far as his athletic ability is concerned..he can indeed drop the 15-20 footer however, im still having doubts on him…perhaps im worried over nothing

  • Freshh

    one could wish

  • Showtime

This sound incredibly hard to pull off. The report is based on a guess. However, the Lakers might benefit a lot from a shot blocking force in Josh Smith.

I am not optimistic but if that can happen (it is hard to compare to it to the Gasol trade though) Dr. Buss would not mind paying a little more extra for a title now would he?

  • mr.laker19

This could be the best thing that ever happen to us, even better then getting Gasol. I feel like Josh Smith is one of the most versatile players in the league and will eventually be a top ten player in this league. I one of his biggest fans, and I’ve always said if we trade Odom, he would be the best option for us. He defends, rebounds, and can score better then Odom. If he can work on his ball handling and passing, we could have the next five to eight years locked up! Lets get it done Mitch

  • http://myspace.com/brittnay678 Brittnay

    1. Los Angeles Lakers – The Lakers were the odds on favorite to win it all heading into The Finals last month. Since that time, they’ve lost Ronny Turiaf. That might sound like a little bit of a problem for LA until you remember he will be replaced on the active roster by some kid named Andrew Bynum. Simply put, if Bynum is healthy the Lakers will be the favorites again in the West next year barring a major by one of the other top teams in the conference.”

    Case closed!

    -Brittnay :)

  • Shaq786

overated player… overated defense, and his offense is aight, with highlight dunks… and weakside help defense (blocks)

the lakers need, someone like tayshaun prince, marion, or ron artest, who have high bball IQ, can pass well, play good one on one defense, know when to help with defense, and who can hit the long mid range shots and/or 3’s

but the one thing i really like about josh smith, is the fact that he is only 22 years old!!!!….. so that being said i would give it a shot… but not for more than 10mil a season!

  • 123KID

hez talented, but i never heard of people talkin highly about his defense! hez young, but when i saw him play against boston, he did show signs of that young under pressure careless mistake josh smith! yet when his game was on, his game was real good. but i think i would stay with LO and still keep workin to get artest instead.

  • Shaq786

    better trades:

1.) lamar, rights to joe crawford, and mihm…. for tayshaun and mcdyess
2.) lamar and walton …. for marion
3.) lamar, rights to joe crawford,….for artest and sheldan williams
4.) lamar, rights to joe crawford, and mihm ….for artest and mikki moore
5.) lamar, rights to joe crawford, farmar, … for gerald wallace and raymond felton
6.) lamar, v.rad….. for wally szezerbiak (expiring), joe smith (expiring vet. pf), JJ Hickson (great young pf)…

number 6… is a great future move… but i beleive we still have enough to contend…. but i would get a 3rd team involved such as sacramento… and give them wally, mihm, and the rights to joe crawford…. for artest and mikki moore

Line up (if number 6 with SAC):

  • lakerschamps09

idk do watever u want… but i would keep team together… if they dont wanna keep team together than trade LO for deng and a filler.. or LO for prince and a filler… soo idk do wat u want mitch…

  • http://drunkenaudible.com sharky

This would be the best move since the Lakers traded Divac and got Kobe. Trust me. Josh Smith is an animal and will only get better. He’s better than Lamar for this Lakers team. I love Lamar, but Josh Smith is better for this Lakers team.

    Pull this off.

  • BringDFishBack

As much as I’d love to see this, Odom is still not for trade as much as you guys love to make up and spread rumors.

  • Michaelmichael

    do it

smith bynum and farmar and ariza are the future

  • Motown

It’s just a little unlikely to happen, but I’m a big fan of Smith, sure he has some concerns over his work ethic, but a change of scenery and a chance to work with Kobe and Phil would be just what he needs to get him going.

Very, very good defender, cna’t believe some call him overrated when the guy is 6’9 and still amongst the leaders in blocked shots.

He’s put in some work on his jump shot also, think of him as a better version of Ariza.

With Josh, we’d be set at the small forward position for years to come with him and Trevor.

  • http://myspace.com/sonicussj Whatsa

I hope Mitch knows what he’s doing.. cause I don’t want to give up Odom.. but now everyone wants Odom for this Josh Smith guy, I haven’t really paid attention to him.. but I guess we’ll see.

  • me

i know for a fact no one is getting moved from our team till the trade deadline, no way their messing up the chemestry from our team. they know we have what it takes cuz we went to the finals and i know for a fact that this will not happen again when they get that close and lose with kobe on the team….but do it mitch!!! lol

I dont think Lakers need artest, all we need is a veteran foward who could play good D, and plus odom’s contract goes off the cap.

I’d love it if we could keep Odom, and hopefully we do, and if we don’t keep him and trade him, then well…it’s your call Mitch, whatever you do is just fine with me, do whatever you want, as long as it has Kobe’s and Phil’s acceptance plus an additional acceptance by Buss for financial purposes. I think this is a pretty good deal, though maybe the Hawks can give him a short-term deal like 3 years with a team-option in the 2nd year, that’d work for me contract-wise, and with us getting Claxton…where do we put Sun Yue?

  • Russ Ahi

i dont get why you guys want josh smith so bad….

i mean, im not the biggest lamar odom fan, but why exactly would be bring in josh smith? because he’s a big name player??? because he’s led his team to a strong playoff run??? because he would help us next season???

none of those are true…c’mon laker fans…you guys have to really think about this and what this would do to our team…so far, we’ve been hearing about artest coming to LA, and now josh smith…doesn’t anyone remember we were THE FAVORITES TO WIN THE FINALS…yeah, i admit, the lakers sucked on defense…but one player is not gonna make this team 10 times better…we just need to play together for a full season with a HEALTHY BYNUM and a HEALTHY ARIZA…who’s our competition in the west next season??? the spurs, the hornets, and the jazz…honestly, that’s how i feel…those three teams are our competition…

    1. spurs – they aint getting any younger…we beat them last year in the conference finals..we can do it again…especially with a healthy bynum
    2. hornets – never got to face them in the playoffs, but c’mon. derek fisher and kobe can stop chris paul…without paul, the hornets are mediocre at best
    3. jazz – d-will and boozer are both in the olympics. not to mention ak47 will be playing in beijing as well…don’t be surprised if they look sluggish come playoff time, having played almost 2 years of organized basketball

i think the lakers should play next season with the lineup they have now…maybe add a veteran to fill in at backup PF…but overall..dont do anything drastic or stupid…then after two months, see where we’re at…why do we have to do something so drastic before we’ve seen the REAL lineup together???

i just think its ridiculous to change stuff when NO ONE has seen the lineup below play one game of basketball…
    c – bynum
    pf – pau gasol
    sf – lamar
    sg – kobe
    pg – d-fish

hang on, i like artest, but consider this, artest is what 28-29 yrs.old, josh is 22. meaning our young core would carry the new lakers dynasty until the late 2010’s. also, look at the bagage artest would be bringing, ron excuse me, bill is now representing himself, i don’t think this guy is that bright off the court and to some extent on court(malice in palace), he is a good defender, but he might be losing a step. I would rather have the matrix if not, Josh Smith. he’s got potential and he’s a beast on the blocks and have you seen his monster dunks. give me josh smith over artest anyday.

  • Laker Man

I am not a cap numbers expert but acquiring Josh Smith for Lamar looks bad cap wise. A sign and trade would have to be a contract for multiple years. Next year Bynum and Kobe could be free agents looking for max contracts. If the Lakers keep Lamar he too will be a free agent
I don’t think that the Lakers will commit to a long term contract for
Smith with Bynum and Kobe up for new conracts potentially.
Further, like others have said lets see what the Lakers can do with
everyone healthy before making any big moves.

  • ricky

its terrible how so many fans are willing to give up on lamar already. we havent even seen bynum, gasol, and odom team up in the front court for 1 game yet and everyone’s ready to break things up. i say we stay put for now and IF any team is willing to cave in and trade their star player (i.e. ron artest or josh smith) without having to give up lamar odom or any of our other players (except for chris mihm, vladimir radmanovic, or luke who i still like more so than the other two) then we will do the deal, but if its for odom, farmar, ariza, etc.. then forget it and just keep the team together as it is and see how the big 3 of bynum, gasol, and odom work out. im sure those 3 will dominate the front court against any team.

I will only trade LO to get Matrix, Prince, or Artest. Did we all forget about Defense! These guys all have great Defensesive skills, good B-ball IQ and can score . LO is too INCONSISTANT for 4 yrs now, this is not new. The way he plays was too predictable. I’m sorry, but LO needs to move on to a diff. system or team. The Triangle does not fit him well. Again, I will miss his rebounds, that’s it! In the end we will start the season with LO, I know…

  • http://www.jamieinsider.com Jamie Spears Insider

[Comment ID #47204 Will Be Quoted Here]

I agree with you somewhat, but also think your underestimating Josh. He’s one of the better defensive players in the league, and the Lakers could really use that. He can also play PF and SF like Lamar which is needed with Bynum questionable, might not be as good a rebounder but if Bynum/Gasol works out (like it probably will need to in order to win a championship), a big rebounder isn’t a big need. He can pass and handle the ball. I think he’s pretty similar to Lamar, just not as great a rebounder and a better defender. I just think the defense he could bring to the table would help the team. (Note: I don’t think Artest can bring the same thing because 1) he can’t play PF 2) he isn’t as good a defender as Josh 3) he’s a nutcase 4) he’d screw up the chemistry and 5) he’s overrated and his best days are behind him)

That all being said I do have confidence in the team they have and believe they can win it all. If they didn’t make any deals (which I hope they don’t, except for ones that I think will make a difference like this, but definately not artest), that’s great and they still have an amazing team. Sometimes there are just deals that you have to bite on and to me, this would be one of them. I still don’t think it will happen though.

BringbackJerryWest.com I guarantee West would make the trade even if Mitch doesn’t have the balls too…

  • Kobayashi

The reason that this trade may not go down is that Josh Smith wants $10 million a year. Kobe and Pau are already maxed and Bynum will soon be maxed. Add that with the Lakers being well into the luxury tax, I think that the Lakers getting Smith is more wishful thinking.

Plus, even if you use Odom in the trade, Smith’s contract will last 4 years longer than his.

Also, I don’t like Smith’s attitude saying that he won’t come back to Atlanta if Coach Woodson is still there. He’s got a lot of defensive skills, but I don’t think he’ll fit in the triangle.

FYI, Ronny Turiaf did not play in place of Bynum. Bynum is a starting center while Turiaf is a backup power forward. At this point the Lakers still have a hole at the backup PF position. I doubt any current Laker can play that role right now. LO has to start, Mihm is a center, Rad is SF, so who do we have right now that comes off the bench WITH ENERGY + hustle to back that position? NO one.

  • Make a Move, Mitch.

Artest may be getting older and slower. LO for Smith and Claxton is a great deal. If not then get Marion. Still would be good to keep the team together and see how it will do.
