It’s now been confirmed. The former Clipper and high energy player is a great replacement for Turiaf in my opinion. How do you guys feel about the newest Laker?

O.C. Register: Lakers spokesman John Black just confirmed that journeyman forward Josh Powell has been signed by the Lakers.

The 6-foot-9 Powell spent the 2007-2008 season with the Clippers, primarily as a backup forward. However, he started extensively late in the season, when starting center Chris Kaman missed 17 of the final 21 games due to an ankle injury.

  • http://www.myspace.com/aznboiryo Kenny

i dont think hes as good as turiaf =(

  • http://www.myspace.com/fabezee fabz24lakers

if he plays as good as ronny or better it should pay off!!!

  • http://ld2k.com LD2k

He is a HIGH energy player.

  • LakersFirst

He is an inexpensive back up power forward/center with some experience. Who did you expect the Lakers to get? Some superstar power forward that is willing to come off the bench?

  • Six45ci

Never herd of him. seen some highlights on youtube, nothing special. looks like a Development league, all star. other than that, cant really say hes a good/decent pick up, he hasnt had enough time on the floor to prove himself. all nba players have some sort of highlights.

  • E-ROC

Josh Powell reminds me of Brandon Bass. I’m glad the Lakers sign him. Now, they should sign Quinton Ross.

  • maccassedy

JOSH KOOL..N HE HAD ALOT OF PT 4 DA CLIPPERS LAST YR LOL….I GUESS MAN HES CHEAP..HOPE 4 DA BEST

  • http://thelakersnation.com/blog/ topher96

Iam the one that started this toopic i the shoutbox

  • VoiceofReason

Guys trust me Josh Powell is a great back up. He played for the Clippers. I feel in love with him just because of his hard work. You can argue this guy works harder for the rebounds than Turiaf. Hes a great pick up. The only thing he lacks is being a great cheer leader like Roni was. Great sign I’m excited to see the young fella sign with us seriously.

  • http://twitter.com/andrewho andrewho

    Who?

Powell’s the better rebounder, and if its at the minimum, probably the better value… but Turiaf is the better player IMO

Has the potential to surprise an avid fan, but certainly no one to get excited about…

  • DCLAKER

He was good player at N.C.State,sorta like a Chris Wilcox type.

  • 123KID

    nice! good pick-up!

Very good move. Low cost, young player and high energy. This is a better than if the Lakers brought in Kwame Brown, Kurt Thomas or “Tractor” Traylor.

FINALLY! YES YES YES… EVER SINCE I HEARD JOSH POWELL WAS WAIVED BY THE CLIPPERS, I WAS GOING CRAZY TRYING TO GET EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT THIS GUY WOULD BE A GREAT REPLACEMENT TO RONNY TURIAF. HELL YES I WILL MISS RONNY BUT THIS IS A GREAT START. I SEEN HIM PLAY SOME FOR THE CLIPPERS LAST SEASON AND HE DID A VERY SOLID JOB IN ONLY 64 GAMES OR SO. HE HAD SIMILAR NUMBERS TO RONNY AVERAGING 5.5 PPG AND 5.6 RPG. I JUST CAN’T BELIEVE MY WISH CAME TRUE THAT THE LAKERS WOULD GO OUT AND SIGN HIM. MITCH IS MY HERO AGAIN AND I MUST SAY, EVER SINCE HE STOOD PAT IN NOT TRADING BYNUM AND MAKING THE HUGE TRADE FOR GASOL, HE SURE AS HELL GOT SOME HIDDEN EXECUTIVE GM TALENT.

IM SO FREAKING EXCITED NOW. OUR ROSTER IS PRETTY MUCH COMPLETE WITH HIS SIGNING, THE ONLY PROBLEM NOW IS WHICH GUARDS TO KEEP SINCE WE HAVE KARL, CRAWFORD, MITCHELL, AND YUE. LUCKILY ITS A GOOD PROBLEM TO HAVE =)

    JUST IMAGINE OUR ROSTER

    C BYNUM
    F GASOL
    F ODOM
    G BRYANT
    G FISHER

    C MIHM
    F POWELL
    F RADMANOVIC
    F ARIZA
    F WALTON
    G VUJACIC
    G KARL/CRAWFORD/MITCHELL
    G FARMAR/YUE

  • http://Andrewbynum.com Corey Bynum

    what did he do?

  • Rpoc

Good replacement for Ronny. He could be to us what Brandon Bass is to the Mavs.

  • DCLAKER

HAPPY B-DAY MAGIC(A FELLOW LEO),THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!

  • 323 TOWN

    NOT BAD AT ALL!
I CAUGHT SOME OF HIS GAMES ON FSN PRIMETIME
    HE AINT THAT BAD …

  • Mitch4Pres

im feelin this signing. mitch ur a beast but does this mean no alonzo?

  • DCLAKER

Corey Bynum, wait ’til we play the 1st game of the season vs. The Blazers…then ask me.

  • Banzai

sweet! if Powell plays really good then that could mean less playing time for Luke!!!!!!!

  • ricky

mitch is making some very nice moves right now, sure they are under-the-radar-type acquisitions but they will help us nonetheless. we are picking up some quality role players and thats what this team needs, solid role players to compliment our new fab 4 of bynum, bryant, gasol, and odom. mitch is hella awesome for signing him, i really wanted him on our roster to replace ronny ever since the clips waived him. =)

we have some serious depth on our roster now with powell helping to replace ronny

C bynun, mihm (mbenga if re-signed??)
    F gasol, powell, radmanovic
    F odom, ariza, walton
    G bryant, vujacic, karl (crawford/mitchell??)
    G fisher, farmar, yue

you obviously dont watch nba alot

  • six45ci

    nope i dont. :-)

  • Lakers 24 7

Josh is a pretty dope back up, young dude, a lot of energy, not as much enthusiasm and fun as Turiaf, but he’s alright

  • http://89.com MambaKB24

hes kinda like ronny in the sense that he has lots of energy
but their mindsets are kinda different
ronny wanted to block shots and rebound
powell wants to be physical on the block and post up
in the end tho, great signing
they didnt have to pay top dollar for someone whose gonna play 10-15 minutes a game, and now they dont have to play vlad at the 4 so much (which makes us “less-soft”)
i can see him playing backup minutes in the finals when pau struggles vs kg

  • lakersftw

now get rid of radman, walton, and karl

  • killo15

i wanted either carl landry or josh powell…i love this! long live mitch! long live mitch! i dont think mitch is done yet either

  • ignard

Let me get this straight, you guys are excited about a dude that got waived by the Clippers?

  • yellowpurplefever

Great Signing. Lets put him in before V-lady or Fluke> we just need Defense and Hustle plays and hard foul/hack anyone opposing teams once in awhile. Remember All ya’ll praising Mitch, don’t two face when things are a bit rocky. GO USA! LETS SPANK SPAIN!! sorry Pau. Apology accepted.

  • fred0s

    Unimpressed.

  • Robert

    josh powell???

  • http://nbafan24.webs.com kbfan24

great addition but to much for a bench player. hard to say but he will be a great replacement filling in for turiaf.

  • Freshh

The excitement basically is built up from
our Major hole we have at backup PF spot.
At least I’m assuming it is.

    Powell is a solid signing.
Did I prefer a vet big man?
    Sure.

    But I’ll take him.
At least we didn’t get Kwame.

  • Adamas

i was hoping for zo but i guess powell isn’t so bad. maybe we can still sign zo. i really don’t trust mihm to last a whole season

  • Adamas

[Comment ID #48874 Will Be Quoted Here]

timeout. did they really sign him for that much? we might as well have kept turiaf

  • Adamas

now, is there some way to get rid of walton? i would gladly get rid of him for quinton ross. ross has something that bill’s son is seriously lacking, balls

  • http://www.thelakersnation.com Fred A.

    Good job Mitch!!!!!!!!
But you not finish, do this trade please:
    Lakers get: Marc Gasol/Antione Walker/1st rounder 2010
    Grizzs get: Radmonivic/Walton/Karl/2nd rounder 2009,2010

    Fisher/Farmer/Yue
    Bryant/Vujavic/Mitchel

This is the best scouting I have of the guy without showing highlights because I don’t belive in highlights showing how good a player is at all, also, just for a little more interest for you guys, not to say that he’s any better than Turiaf in anything besides rebounding but here are their stats compared to each other:

    Minutes: Powell= 19.2, Turiaf= 18.7
    Points: Powell= 5.5, Turiaf= 6.6
    Rebounds: Powell= 5.2, Turiaf= 3.9
    Blocks: Powell= 0.4, Turiaf= 1.4
    Assists: Powell= 0.7, Turiaf= 1.6
    Steals: Powell= 0.2, Turiaf= 0.4
    Turnovers: Powell= 1.02 Turiaf=0.92
    Field Goal Percentage: Powell= 46%, Turiaf= 47.4
    Free-Throw Percentage: Powell= 72.4%, Turiaf= 75.3%

BOY,OH BOY…YET ANOTHER FANTASY TRADE BY THE ONE AND ONLY…I wish we could though..AB1ST here you go…

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=1016~3224~3032~2782&teams=4~18~13~13&te=&cash=!!!

  • Smush Walton

    That’s a start.

If we are serious about improving for next year these are the three key steps:

    1. GET RID OF WALTON – he is absolutely worthless, a JOKE!

    2. GET RID OF VLAD RAD – he’s got to go!

    3. Get someone worthwhile for Lamar. This will be Lamar’s 5th year as a Laker and 10th as a pro and he’s still figuring out his game! Enough already! He’s not going to be the “next Scottie Pippen”. His outside shot is HORRENDOUS. He is a scarecrow on defense. With his awkward one handed attack with constant charge fouls and goofy falling down shots, his ball handling is a clown show. He had ONE good quarter in the finals. Its time to pull the plug on this guy! The Lakers should try to get something of value while there are still some GMs out there that think he has some value.

  • Jason

Pargo just signed with a team in Russia–looks like he won’t be returning to Lakerland.

  • http://lakers.topbuzz.com Mamba2410

[Comment ID #48973 Will Be Quoted Here]

Walton’s smarts in the Triangle and excellent passing ability and pass-first mentality are the reasons why Walton is still a Laker, not a non-Lakers or however you want to pronounce it, Phil nor Kobe would want for him to be traded, not at all…As for Radmanovic, the only reason why he’s still a Laker is because no one wants to trade for his contract nor his talent, so I guess we’re stuck with him…
And finally, Odom…he doesn’t even have to be any better anymore, now that he’s a 4th option, why would we get someone else who would probably not only be all too happy with a 4th option role, but he would also be much more of a ballhog considering thow much Odom really loves the art of passing, and that’s a good thing for us. Why we didn’t get J.O. was probably because not only he wouldn’t help us any better than Bynum but he also is way more of a ballhog than Bynum, look at our team roster right now, and tell me this…how many guys on our team ballhog from time-to-time (besides Kobe)…the only people close to that is probably maybe…Farmar? That’s al I can ever think of…look…we don’t need another ballhog/leading scorer (or former leading scorer, in which he “would” be if he was a Laker alongside Kobe) with Kobe, that’d ruin our offense and the way we score, sure, Kobe wants some rest from scoring but do you think that we need a ballhog or whatever, no…it doesn’t work that way, and as for our defense, we don’t need Bynum to improve our defense as much as we need to improve on our team defense, such as help defense, double-teaming while having people be close enough to every other player, we just need to play at least 75% as good defense as the Celtics or something, we need to defend not only as individuals…but as a team itself…for without teamwork on both offense “AND” defense, we may never win a championship again…believe it.

  • Big Phil

[Comment ID #48985 Will Be Quoted Here]

Walton smart in the Triangle with great passing ability?! Are you f*cking kidding me. We saw Luke pass to the opposing team over and over during the ENTIRE SEASON AND PLAYOFFS. He has no physical talent (always gets his shots blocked on post-ups, can barely make shots when he’s 1 foot away from the basket, opposing players just leave him in the dust, plays defense like an old lady). There have been so many times when the Lakers have lost big leads in games whenever he’s on the floor. He’s f*cking useless. He doesn’t even belong in the NBA.

  • DCLAKER

Trade Walton for Ben Gordon and push Sun Yue to SF.

  • http://getgarnett Louis

Great trade perfect trade mitch. Good replacement for ronny.
He is a great fit for the team, But We still need to get
rid of Puke Waaaaaaaaaaaaalton and Fladmic Remonovoic.Than
    we are a team.

    Just imagine our linups.
    Starting Backup 3th Option
PG. Derek Fisher /Jordan Farmer /
SG. Kobe Bryant /Suashu Vajulia / Dwayne Mitchell
SF. Lamor Odom /Trevor Ariza / Sun Yue
PF. Pau Gasol /Josh Powell /
    C. Andrew Bydnum /Chris Mihm / DJ Mbenga

And send Coby Karl and Joel Crawford to D-League.
