For those of you that visit ESPN.com on a regular basis, you know that John Hollinger has a little segment where he takes questions from fans and answers them, called “Chat with John Hollinger.”

John Hollinger has hinted at being a Laker hater, through his articles and rankings (a fan would argue). What hints more towards it is this little quote from John himself:

Chad (Auburn Hills)

Have Jazz fans overtaken Lakers fans as the most whiny?

John Hollinger (2:51 PM)

It’s hard to compare. The Lakers have a lot of quasi-fan bandwagoneers that pollute the ranks, much like the Yankees/Cowboys/Manchester United, so it’s tough to tell what’s coming from the rank and file and what’s just coming from random idiots. With Utah it’s more the small-market paranoia that nobody will ever give them any respect, mixed in with a few decades of not winning the championship.

  • Harrison

well all i can say to this is, FUCK JOHN HOLLINGER! people gotta stop hating on the lakers for winning and their fans for cheering on their team. fuck the haters.

  • MECKA

From what i just read..he says Lakers have a lot of Bandwagon fans not that all Laker fans our bandwagoners…Two diffrent things..Title a lil misleading in my opinion.

  • James Pak

Isn’t he saying that there are the fans who make up the ranks and then there are idiots fans who “pollute” the ranks? He’s not really hating on Laker fans, just the random idiots.

I think the title of this post is a little bit misleading.

  • ATLakers

Agreed with the 2 above me, no doubt that there are SOME bandwagoner Laker fans. Obviously, everybody who’s checking this site over the summer and before the Lakers have played any meaningful games this year is not a bandwagoner. I think the post took what he said out of context. In fact, I think it’s good he said it — true fans criticize the team when they’re not doing what needs to get done, but other teams think we’re whiners because that’s what our bandwagoners do.

    • http://www.twitter.com/TLN24 Marwan Marzina

Actually, true fans just back up the team and admit to defeat and move on, giving the other team respect where it’s due for defeating the champs. Whining and coming up with excuses is disrespecting the other team.
I’ve heard so many people mouth off to the Lakers and those I deem to be bandwagoners. You can’t criticize the team you go for, that’s basically doing the job of the haters. What’s the different between the ‘fans’ that criticize the team and haters? There is no difference, they both see something they hate in the team. True fans love everything about their team. The good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly.

      • Jason

I agree with a lot of this, but the idea that fans can’t criticize their team is silly.

You are absolutely right that true fans love “the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly.” You love the team no matter what.

But the difference between fans and haters is that when fans criticize, they do it from a place of love. It’s based on a desire for them to be the best that they can be. I’m not hating the Lakers when I mention that they have a tendency to play down to their lesser opponents and that it would be better if they just put those teams away early.

When you were little, did you ever do anything wrong so that your mom or dad got mad at you? When they told you to stop, do you think they were being haters? Of course not (assuming they didn’t take it too far). In fact, their love fis what obligates a parent to be critical. Otherwise, they’re not doing their job.

        • ATLakers

“But the difference between fans and haters is that when fans criticize, they do it from a place of love. It’s based on a desire for them to be the best that they can be. I’m not hating the Lakers when I mention that they have a tendency to play down to their lesser opponents and that it would be better if they just put those teams away early.”

This. I’ve been a Laker fan since age 5 and even watched the team in the Smush days. For example, I am incredibly proud of what the Lakers were able to accomplish in 2008, getting all the way to the NBA Finals when at the start of the season, people were afraid that Kobe was going to leave. But don’t tell me you weren’t critical of what the Lakers needed to do to become a better team and win it all the next year (and the year after!).

  • showtime4eva

I’m sure hollinger also believes we come from apes too. It’s shame these reporters and or the media.are considered “experts” they used to be paid to report.now they get paid to influence and swing opinion,it’s so sleazy and gay how they stir the pot for amusement.bandwagon fans don’t fallow any certain team or sport but only out of fashion or popularity, true fans are involved with the team I don’t know why a band wagon fan of any team would”whine or complain”the emotion just would not be there.I think hollinger is the random “idiot”he was talking about. I’m from Inglewood and I love the Lakers. let’s get back to winning. GO LAKERS!!

    • deems

haha ur implying we didn’t evolve over time? do you believe creationism should be taught in school too?

hold, because hollinger said that some lakers fans are just on the bandwagon, you imply that he must believe in natural selection? Come on man think. And stick to basketball, if you want to talk about your upside down views then go to a chat room that’s made for it.

          • showtime4eva

I really hate it when people call TRUE laker fans bandwagoners, i mean come on, I myself have been watching this team play even in all their loosing years, and fucken haters like john hollinger think just because the Lakers NOW got a great team these last couple of years and they won back-to-back championships, we all suddenly start cheering for them and also watch them on TV again. These damn haters seriously just need to piss off already and leave us TRUE LAKERS FANS alone!!! We love our LAKERS no matter how good or bad the team becomes.

  • Robert.

“random idiots”? Unlike organized idiots, like John Hollinger (and ESPN).

  • Robert.

No seriously, folks … Hollinger and the EastcoaStPN weenies do NOT understand us here in LA. LA is the ‘basketball mecca’, PERIOD. (we are home to the Championship Lakers, and also former college dynasty UCLA Bruins). Home to the 2 greatest coaches in history – John Wooden, and Phil Jackson (college & pro).
    .
So, ALL OF US here have ‘every right’ to do whatever we feel, when it comes to the Lakers.
    .
We love our team so much, that we also want to coach them, and help them by pointing out things, and analyzing things. True fans live and breathe and die with the team. We experience their frustrations, we yell at them when they’re not playing up to their level, we get upset when they don’t win (and should have), we experience ALL this, and it ALL counts in making us all great fans. It don’t matter if a fan just watched game 7 last year, or knew Wilt Chamberlain personally – ALL counts.
    .
We don’t like other teams – they’re wrong, and we’re right. PERIOD. We all got a ‘basketball jones’ here. That song (Cheech and Chong) came from LA – listen to it – it mentions Chick Hearn.
    .
And that was ‘before’ Showtime. Don’t get me started on that. The Showtime Lakers INVENTED modern basketball, with Magic at the helm. If it weren’t for the Showtime Lakers, we wouldn’t have what we have now. The NBA was NOT doing well at the time, and even though Dr. J was performing pyrotechnics, it took Magic & Co. to revive basketball. This was LONG before MJ.
    .
The basketball world of today owes its debt to the LA Lakers – that’s it. And as such, WE HAVE BRAGGING RIGHTS HERE. Yes, when the Lakers lose, it’s the OTHER team that’s disrespecting US. They have no right. They owe us — for infinity! And now, they owe us for Kobe. Kobe=LA, LA=Kobe – Do not DARE disrespect us.
    .
Hollinger, you are just hating. Go shove your pathetic and unrealistic stats up your east coast a$$. (whatsa matter? your heat are not living up to your expectations? or calculations?).

  • Jason

    First, Lakers rule!

Second, does the author of this article have the reading comprehension level of a 5 year old? Hollinger is saying the exact opposite of what the title says. He says that there are some bandwagon fans, but that they are not representative of real Lakers fans. He’s doing good Lakers fans a favor by trying to distinguish them from bad Lakers fans (and trust me, there are some).

This post (along with many of the commenters) actually legitimizes the Laker-hater who asks Hollinger the question. You are being whiny. It’s not everybody else’s obligation to constantly fawn over everything Lakers related. Stop being like some insecure teenager who finds a way to be defensive about everything that’s said to them.

I’ve got some problems with Hollinger’s approach to basketball, but he is not a hater. He can’t be a hater because he’s a numbers guy. Everything he writes always comes back to advanced statistics. He doesn’t care about who the teams are because he just thinks of them as a bunch of numbers. To him, Kobe is “LA #24.” If you took all of the Lakers players and put them in Milwaukee Bucks uniforms, he would write the exact same things about them.

True Lakers fans don’t care when commentators are critical because they understand the real strengths and weaknesses of their team.

In my eyes he has always been a laker hater for as Long as I have read his columns on espn another thing is Hes More of a Celtic fan then He is a Laker But I disagree with his Comments there are More Laker fans then there are Banwagoners

  • LifeLongLakerFan

Man forget John Hollinger Laker Haters are all the same.

  • Leo

Everything Hollinger does, from his articles to his power rankings, are designed to create controversy. STOP paying attention to this FRAUD.

  • Jetblu3

That guy is the biggest lebron James bandwagon/dick rider of all time smh

  • TheLAKERSwon09

I think John Hollinger can burn in fucking hell while the Lakers continue to win.

  • daboss1848

just curious, where does he say he hates the Lkaers?

    • 242LakerFan

In virtually every column he writes that mention the Lakers, he somehow finds a way to spin a negative at them. But the most recent “FU Lakers” moment was ranking a 4-2 Heat team #1 ahead of a 7-0 Laker squad. That was pretty egregious and blatantly haterific.
Mind you (and Marwan is my boy, so don’t get me wrong) this article has once again been turned on its ear by a totally misleading headline, something Marwan has a strong tendency to do. I think it’s quite the complement to say that the Lakers get a lot of bandwagon fans, like Man U or the Yankees. That’s some pretty heady company in which to be placed.
Now, while you may hate the bandwagoners themselves, the concept of having a bunch of bandwagon fans implies that you’re an elite team with a long winning tradition.
So thanks, Hollinger, you scum-sucking, bottom-feeding hater, you!

    • Robert.

he doesn’t have to say it. He’s part of the EascoaStPN Laker hating crew (there are a few exceptions, but he’s not one of them)>

    • Robert.

And, his ‘so called’ statistics are contrived. As a mathematician, I can say that they are not ‘true’ statistics. They take into account parameters that Hollinger has decided are important, and weigh them accordingly (for example, point spread, wins over ‘better teams’, etc. – they do NOT weigh in the point spread for ‘worse teams’, or with any other parameter – they are ‘simple’ relationships).
      .
So, his predictions for Champion, the LAST 3 YEARS since his statistics have come into play, were all wrong. What does that tell you?
      .
It tells you that he can predict that it will rain tomorrow, with a 50% chance. It will either rain, or it won’t. He’d be right! Those are the value of Hollinger’s statistics.
      .
242 is right – his articles always tend to put a negative spin on the Lakers. That’s hating, in my book.

    • daboss1848

he uses his own statistics – Robert, you are more than welcome, as a mathematician, to contrive ur own statistics so that Lakers are always #1.
      .
I take no issue with his rankings – theyre based on #s (not opinion or records). But even if they were based on opinion, I’m not so inclined to call every writer a “hater” just because they pick against the Lakers.
      .
in 2008 playoffs, he picked the Lakers even though his statistics were against them. Go figure.

  • Trem

John Hollinger juat doesn’t understand. We have bandwagon fans, sure, but so do the celtics, so does every big market team. Our true fans are the best, however. We take after our team, we’re not cocky sore losers like the celtics.

    • Robert.

Yes! We are not sore losers. When we lost the Championship in 2008, what did we do? We said, ‘wait till next year’, and all had faith in that. What did the Celtics do after they lost this year? Excuses galore – ‘our starting 5 didn’t play game 7′, etc. etc. — or ‘if KG were healthy (2009) we would have won’.
      .
Not one of us here ‘mentioned’ at the time that ‘if Drew and Ariza played in 2008, we would have won’. We accepted the defeat, and went to the next level. And BOY did it pay off!!!! It took 2 years to get retribution with the Celtics, but it happened. That is ‘true’ glory!
      .
And how did ESPN (including Hollinger) celebrate the Lakers victory this year? By virtually ignoring them and paying homage to ‘the Decision’. AND, his stat’s pay homage to ‘the Decision’ as well. The Lakers may end up on top, a couple of times, during the year (on Hol’s list), but it don’t matter. I find them ‘meaningless’ now. Look at Stein’s rankings instead, if you are going to look at ESPN.

      • daboss1848

        Actually, we blamed the refs . . . .

      • Robert.

Yes, during the Finals. The refs did NOT call all those illegal moving screens, and called ‘too many’ fouls on the Lakers, in comparison with the Celtics.
        .
BUT, after the Finals were over (4 games to 2), it was too late by then. All was said and done. It was nobody’s fault. “Wait till next year”.

  • Djzzero2009

Eh I don’t care i’ve been a Laker fan since I first watched basketball games at 6 years old. I agree they are a bunch of bandwagoners, I remember people who used to hate on the Lakers back in high school and they are like super big fans now. Even my so called ‘celtic fan friend’ is a Lakers fan lols. It’s sad lol. But the more fans, the merrier :).

  • http://thetruthrenaissance.wordpress.com/ BE_A_LakerFan

    John Hollinger is an idiot.

    • 242LakerFan

Once again my man BE boils it down to its barest essence. Well put.

  • roscoe

We do have a lot of bandwagon fans. Every team that wins championships does.

  • Robert.

There ARE no bandwagon fans in Laker Nation. There are only fans. We welcome ALL fans with equal grace. If you are 5 years old, and see your first ‘great’ exciting championship game and then your dad buys you a Kobe shirt – you’re a Lakers fan.
    .
If you HATE the Lakers, and then see Shannon Brown perform a marvelous dunk, and CHEER – you’re a Lakers fan.
    .
If you are in BOSTON, and (before KG arrives), see the Lakers come to play, see Kobe put on a ‘magnificent’ show, and start chanting MVP, YOU TOO are a Lakers fan.
    (c.f.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsXPZVPIjxE ).
    .
Give it up. There are NO bandwagoneers in Laker Nation. Everyone welcome. Bring a dish. Let’s party. Bring some beer. Or Perrier, whatever.
    .
It’s OUR party. Hollinger is not invited (who wants him anyway).

    • LakerNationCitizen

And Chuck (Barkley) – let’s not invite him. He’s a hater! Mainly coz he doesn’t have a ring and Kobe has 5 already….and still going at it!

Though lately, I’ve been hearing some VERY RARE compliments from the Chuckster regarding our team.

  • bostonSUCKS88

hollinger does hate the lakers, but hes right on this. lakers do have alot of bandwagoners. No one will admit that they are a bandwagoner

  • Robert.

It actually doesn’t matter what Hollinger (a reporter?) thinks about us. “Nature is indifferent to the mathematics you ascribe to it”. Nature=Lakers=Champs. They keep winning Championships, no matter where Hollinger’s statistics place them.
    .
I even trust Bill Simmons more than Hollinger – he does acknowledge the Lakers greatness (as a great rival to the Celtics). And BS has to be one of the worst haters in history, but he ‘hates’ with admiration. He actually admires Kobe, & Co.
    .
Hollinger is just a poor man’s tech weenie. A sub-par data gatherer. Read Marc Stein’s rankings – based on ‘reality’ and not arbitrary arrangement of data.
    .
Meantime, read my ‘bandwagon’ column. Nobody is a bandwagon fan here. ALL FANS WELCOME! I’ve been a fan since the Wilt days – maybe I’m a bandwagon fan by his definition (YES, I cheered Wilt and actually ‘boo’ed’ Kareem when he was on the Bucks. Maybe before your time, but Kareem was actually ‘hated’ by Laker fans as a rival before he came to the Lakers – and NOW, he’s one of the Laker Legends).
    .
The term ‘bandwagon’ does not apply to the Lakers, PERIOD, so give it up.

    • daboss1848

“The term ‘bandwagon’ does not apply to the Lakers, PERIOD, so give it up.”
      .
You haven’t been around the Lakers much, have you?

    • roscoe

Dude you are crazy. First of all, and I haven’t looked, Hollingers rankings are subjective. The formula hasn’t changed in 5 years and it would be easy to see how well they predicted anything.

Hollinger has a lot of valuable stuff to read. And the Lakers have A TON of bandwagon fans. EVERY championship winning team does. Do you have any idea how many Steelers fans I find in Arizona! They can’t all have moved from Pittsburgh.

    • Robert.

I said, the “term” bandwagon is not relevant to the Lakers. Lakers fans, ‘worldwide’, do not qualify as bandwagon fans. Lakers is a world brand, not just L.A., so if someone in China is wearing a Kobe shirt, and is a Laker fan, I don’t consider that person ‘bandwagon’.
      .
If someone is San Antonio shows up with a Lakers jersey, I don’t consider that ‘bandwagon’.
      .
If someone never goes to a Laker game (and can’t afford it), but finally shows up – I don’t consider that ‘bandwagon’.
      .
I consider any fan of the Lakers part of the ‘basketball consciousness collective’, NOT a bandwagoneer.
      .
If these fans disappear after the Finals, ‘so what’. They were here when we needed them. ALL FANS WELCOME. Join us … you won’t be disappointed.

  • hopewecan

I started liking the lakers, since that fat ass fuck Shaq left town.

Does this make me a bandwagon fan?

  • rondo

40 percent of the so called Laker fans are bandwagon. Proof in point let the Lakers start losing then watch them jump ship like rats on a sinking ship. Most of them are known for making all those stupid trade demands. Bynum for Marc Gasol or Bynum for Paul Milsap 6ft6in foward. They are people who are never happy even in their every day life. They have no sense of loyalty to anything.

  • Aqzi

I don’t understand why this website cares so much about “bandwagon” fans.

To me, a fan is someone who roots for a team to win. I really don’t care if someone roots for them more or less based on how well the team is performing.

I think part of the hatred for bandwagoners is the fact that people identify strongly with the team, and they want to keep it their own. I’m sure many of the people that visit this site got a little into soccer during this year’s World Cup–and then probably got heat for it from “true” soccer fans who follow the Premier League, Champions League, etc.

And really, bandwagon fans help the team. If a team’s fanbase was entirely made up of people who consistently watched the games regardless of the team’s performance, the team wouldn’t make any money.
When a team performs well, its fanbase increases, and the demand for merchandise, TV advertising time, and tickets increases. Thus, teams have a motivation for doing well and they wouldn’t if it weren’t for the increased number of fans that result from periods of success.

Now, what we call “trolls,” those who post on message boards like these with ridiculous accusations and meaningless allegations, are a different story in my book. And I don’t refrain from calling the original title of this post a ridiculous accusation.

    -Aqzi

    • Robert.

Aqzi, you said eloquently what I’ve been trying to say. I don’t like to characterize ‘categories’ of fans. All fans are welcome here. I don’t care if they’re newbies, oldbies, or fair weather fans. They are ‘fans’. Especially regarding the “Lakers”, which has a ‘worldwide’ following, not just L.A. or USA.

When the Bulls was winning they had many fans now only they loyal fans who love the Bulls are still fans.
