According to a user, Dr. Laker, at the forums at LakersGround.net, McDonell was defending the Derek Fisher signing, but he was defending it in primarily in the context of “step one in a series of steps.” Fish not being a solution in and of himself, but as a piece in a “grand plan.”

He then said that the Lakers ARE very much working on a huge deal (no names were dropped), but that after the team’s recent lack of media discipline, they are playing it very close to the vest and keeping things quiet. McDonnell used to have credibility with the Lakers (during the Jerry West regime) and may still have an inside line.

In any event – My question is: IF the Lakers are working on a secret, huge move, how likely are they to be successful? Sound-off in the comments!

Bring in Fish – trade the young ones.

    Minnesota wants youth… hmmmm…

  • ayman

if the lakers are going to make a big move a hope it does mean sending kobe somewhere else because he is the best player in the league. If they are going to make a big move i hope it is a big and good move that it makes the team better for years to come

  • Rpoc

    Mitch will be resign Mihm.

    Then he will sign Karl.

    Sun Yue makes the team.

They trade Sasha for a second round pick to ease the luxury tax.

That’s the master plan. It’s a series of steps.

I hope its a trade to get KG or Pau.

Why not go after Reggie Miller while you are at it?

Why not put Kareem out there? he already works for the team. I bet he can still do the sky hook.

    Fatty,

    Re: McFail’s psychological makeup.

I think it’s not just not wanting to help the Lakers. I think if you ask around the league, they’ll tell you, none of them wants to help the Lakers. Even the players know this, in my opinion. Think of the number of players that are “rumored” to be going to LA…only to get a “better deal” elsewhere. But I digress. I think McFail is afraid that dealing KG will be the exclamation point in his crappy GM legend.

I too think, he’d prefer to deal with a fellow celtic, as is Larry Bird (another celt alum)…but in Larry Bird’s case he’s willing to deal in desperation (haha)…but I think McDoodoo is looking to salavage his career as well (most important).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the KG to LA almost a done deal? At least until the Celts pulled out. I blame McBug but I also blame the Celts.

  • Rpoc

The reason why it’s Scottie is because of the triangle connection! Duh.

It’ll be a buzz in the media.

  • http://myspace.com/crunklilgangsta LiL_K

i bet he could avg 5 and 5 in 5 min.

Why do people want Pau Gasol? He soft and not a good defender. The lakers need toughness more than anything and Pau aint it.

  • Big D

Scottie is way too ugly to be a laker :)

Let’s face it, the man is quite difficult to look at. Y’all remember Full Metal Jacket? “Private Pile, you’re so ugly you could be a modern art masterpice!”

Ok, so long as there are no close-ups and post-game interviews, we should be ok.

Mchale just can’t do it. Celtic pride gets in his line of sight. He only sees green. That’s why he has to feel he’s helping the old Celtics to actually pull the trigger.

Not sure who botched the last deal. So many rumors. I heard Mchale said wait, Phx has an offer that’s better. Who knows?

Ainge has traded with us before. Its Birdman and Mchale that have the problems.

I think the Lakers have given Minnie an ultimatum. Do the deal by such and such date or we will take it off the table. Negotiating is done. Nothing more can be said. (example the blogs)lol We have other trades to make if he can’t do it.

Did you see Luke saying “we don’t need no stinking KG?”
Also, no rumors of Sasha going anywhere. Who would’ve thought that?

  • Cyrus

    Fatty and That’s Right,

I read your correspondence regarding Fatty’s concern for five position, because I have been asking myself the same question, and I must admit that “That’s Right” analysis of the five position, “Not that I have the utmost confidence in the Lakers FO, but I sense….” is the best I have read in long time, no sportscaster could have put more accurate, good one “That’s Right”. I hope the FO occupants are as smart as you are. LOL

    McHale Dark Past.

McHale has a dark spot with NBA that not many people know about. I looked up Wikipedia to learn more about him and I saw this:

“It was also during McHale’s reign that the Timberwolves were punished by the NBA for making a secret deal with free agent forward Joe Smith to circumvent the league’s salary cap rules. Before the 1998-1999 season, Smith agreed in secret to sign three one-year contracts with the Timberwolves for less than his market value. In return, Smith received a promise that the Timberwolves would give him a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract before the 2001-2002 season.

In 2000, after word of the secret agreement got out, NBA commissioner David Stern voided Smith’s final one-year contract with the Timberwolves, making Smith a free agent. Stern also took away the Timberwolves’ next three first round draft picks and fined the team $3.5 million. Smith signed with Detroit for one season, but came back to Minnesota before the 2001-2002 season as a free agent.”

  • Justin M.

I wonder what rumor is going to be posted afetr 80 days.

  • mj2kb

Luke doesn need kg cuz he believes hes involved in a trade or bcuz he might not be in the starting lineup if they bring someone else in. He wants to be the third scoring option. Those are the only reasons i could think of of why luke said that

luke said that because its not his place to say that they need help. why upset the team more than it already is!

    Cyrus, good find on Wikipedia.

3 first rounders is a huge price to pay, but Stern is, if nothing else, stern.

Fatty, I agree that McHale just can’t pull the trigger without having another team involved, but I think he will be a goner before the season starts. Either way, the Lakers will pull off the KG deal.

As for Luke, being near Hollywood he feels like he needs to act. I bet it was a psychological ploy.

I mean really, why did he agree to less $ if not to bring in another player to improve the team. Sorry but I just ain’t buying the “help them reduce the luxury tax” suggestion. If that were the case, I am sure he would tell Buss which bus he could jump in front of b/c I am pretty sure he can afford it…call it a hunch.

I didn’t believe it, but it really coincides with what I’ve run across from the celtics blog.

Tom claimed that KG (from the lakers stand point) could be acquired by lakers just giving up Odom, Fillers like cook and lakers 2008 1st rounder.

    Tom said:

“Kevin Garnett- Known accross the world, “The Big Ticket”, would be “The Big Draw” here in Los Angeles with Kobe Bryant. According to my uncle, Mitch feels like he really wants to appease the fans, as well as Kobe Bryant, but is playing his hand very carefully right now. According to my uncle Mitch is loosing sleep over this, and his on the phone with Minnesota , “every other day” trying to get a deal in place. Larry Miller, actually has no problems trading him here for Kwame, Odom, Cook and our ’08 first rounder BUT your firiend and mine Kevin McHale shoots down every trade. The good news? Kevin wants to come here…and EVEN more so than Jermaine. If he is dealt ( an extremly liklihood now that the cat is out of the bag) he will take that as a personal threat against McHale, and would mostly likely sign with us next year for the Full Mid-Level exception? Sounds like pure pipe? I know….that’s what I thought when he first conveyed that to me. Nevertheless…. he’s the one with the connections and is “in the know”.

Rumors didn’t fly around even as early as the late 90’s because the internet wasn’t quite as prolific, I only bring this up because in the past Lakers have been good at being hush about big deals and have nonetheless made them happen. Since West left they haven’t been quite as good but I’ve always been confident about the Lakers’ ability to get big things done, use the attractiveness of Los Angeles, and build championship caliber teams. Something good is happening guys…

This is the huge deal thats going to happen

laker’s send Vladimir Radmanovic, Brian cook, Lamar Odom and Jordan Farmar to the timberwolves and also send Andrew Bynum and kwame Brown to the Nuggets.

The nuggets send Marcus Camby to the laker’s and the timberwolves send (Mark Blount or Troy Hudson) large contract and Kevin Garnett to the Lakers.

Sending Brown to the Nuggets gives them the expiring contract that the seek to get in return for Camby and also gives them a young center that can possibly fill his shoes in the future and be able to team up with melo and A.I.

The Timberwolves would get some young talent in Cook, Farmar, Radmanovic and Odom would be able to put up some KG like numbers because the majority of the offense would be ran through him. Because the Timberwolves are getting the least amount of talent laker’s are sending future draft picks and/or players that were drafted this year such as Marc Gasol, Sun Yue that can help them in the near future.

In response to dropping 3 roster spots We can sign Fisher with the mid-level exception and also give Webber the veteran exception which will give us a decent big man who can pass the ball and give some quality minutes off the bench. Then resign Mihm to a reduced contract because he can give quality minutes off the bench as well This would leave the team with a starting lineup that would like this Fisher, Kobe, Walton, KG, Camby and off the bench it would leave Crittenton, Evans, Vujacic, Turiaf, (Blount/Hudson), Webber and Mihm.

The combination of Fisher and Walton knowing how to run the Triangle offense and the scoring of Kobe and KG would be enough of a solid day after day offense. That combination of scoring would be plenty because of the very strong defense that the laker’s would now obtain with Kobe being able to go back to the lock down defender we all know he can be because he will not have to carry the entire offensive load and KG and Camby are two outstanding defensive players in their own right.

As a result of all these moves we would most likely be put over the luxury tax threshold but that would only cause a problem for 1 year. It would only really be a problem for one year because if KG likes his first year in the gold and purple he can opt out of his contract and resign at a greatly reduced price. I think it is a very good possibility that he would entertain this idea because he is a very loyal person and he wants to win a championship now that hes got all the money he needs. If that did happen the laker’s would not be in trouble of having to go dollar for dollar two years in a row because of the luxury tax.

Fact Check: Walton’s signing did not effect the salary cap, as he was the Lakers’ free agent to re-sign. Doubtful that he would have gotten the same money anywhere else, so he wasn’t doing the front office any favors.

As far as all these dream scenarios go–wherein the T-wolves are willing to give up Garnett for Sasha, a toenail clipper and a 3rd rounder in 2018–it’s interesting that most people are failing to mention the one expendable asset the Lakers do have… Brown’s expiring contract. Truthfully, this might be the only bargaining chip that will allow us to get a good player without giving up a player/combo of equal or greater talent. A smarter GM with a cap problem might be willing to give McHale something worth parting with KG for if the Lakers gave them said contract, along with Bynum and some role players. It’s a serious long shot, but it’s a lot more feasible than dreaming that anyone in the league is eager to take Vladimir Radmonovich or Brian Cook off our hands.
